Welcome from the Head of School, Mrs. Alison Cobbin Welcome to our final edition of the Dwight School London magazine for the 2015/16 academic year. The summer term, saw our Year 6 students enjoying a week in New York with their peers from Dwight New York, whilst our Upper School students had the chance to practice their Spanish in Spain. Our Year 6 students did an amazing job of celebrating their learning at the IB PYP Exhibition, it really was a wonderful evening that really impressed us all. The Upper School students shared some fantastic drama and musical evenings with us, with performances from Japan and the US, celebrating our international community. The two Sports Days were an absolute delight, we were blessed with the weather and everyone had a fabulous day. Like all other international schools there are the inevitable goodbyes at the end of the school year; this is hard for both the students and the staff. Thankfully, with the benefits of modern technology we are able to stay in touch quite easily and this makes the world seem a much smaller and we are able to maintain close links. We are looking forward to welcoming new staff and families to the Dwight Community in September as we embark on another exciting year at Dwight School London. Kind regards Alison Cobbin Head of School

Baseball Legends
Rinta (M2), Hiroki (M2) and Jay (M3) have been representing the UK in the Junior League Baseball Europe-Africa Regional Tournament in Poland this term. Their team played 6 games, beating Belarus,
Poland, Lithuania and Germany and losing twice to Italy. As a result, their team came third.
More details can be found here: http://www.llbws.org/llbbws/jlbbws/ europeafrica.htm. Well done to them all!
Mad Scientists
At the beginning of this term we held our Science Week. We invited in the company Mad Science to share an entertaining and informative assembly about lift, gravity and air. We made paper planes and judged them in terms of flight time and distance. We talked to the students about the need to always ask questions, set hypotheses and learn from conclusions in science experiments.
Mighty Mathematicians
Year 4, 5 and 6 were given the option of taking part in the Maths Junior Challenge this term. Over 3,700 schools took part. The challenge is designed to stretch participants and is based on an upper school level. We were very pleased to see so many students take part and be risk takers. Over 250,000 students took part nationally, including 25 Dwight Lower School students. Congratulations to them all and specifically to Kazuki, Kanta and Areg in Year 5 and 6, who got bronze and silver certificates putting them in the top 20% and 13% respectively.

Museum Wizkids
The EAL and English B students from the Upper and Lower School enjoyed a fantastic trip to the Museum of London this term. The Upper School students were excellent mentors for our Lower School EAL students and it was wonderful to see them engaging and speaking English! The trip started with a guided walk of London where the students asked inquiring questions. After this, they enjoyed lunch before exploring the museum and exchanging stories of their own countries’ history and the Upper School students shared their knowledge on the history of London, that they had learnt in class recently. The students were excellent communicators and demonstrated their skills from the IB Learner Profile.
The World of Economics
during such an historic week.
This term the D1 Economics students visited the Museum of the Bank England and the Bank of America Merrill Lynch. It was a perfect day for them to go into the city, as they had just learned about the results of the Brexit. Thank you to Dwight parent Mr. Osher for explaining the differences between commercial banks, investment banks (like Merrill Lynch) and central banks (like the Bank of England) and for discussing some of the consequences of the Brexit result. It was a really interesting day for the students
Singing her way to the top!
Congratulations to Chantelle (M4) who performed at the recent EuroSino Conference at the Grosvenor House Hotel on Park Lane. We heard she was a huge hit with the 300-plus audience, well done Chantelle!
Letter Exchange
Some students of M2, M3, and M4 (Year 8, 9, &10) Spanish have been taking part in a letter exchange with a school in Marbella, in the south of Spain. They have already received two letters and the exchange is proving a very positive experience. Students are getting to know each other in what could be considered an old-fashioned way. They are really taking to it and some of the letters are quite artistic. Some students are exchanging little presents already (stickers, drawings…) and we look forward to the next round of letters. A huge “BRAVO” also to our M1 (Year 7) students, who replied to their French pen pals! The letters were absolutely fantastic: excellent writing together with colourful and pleasant drawings, pop-ups and even a Chelsea brochure! Every letter highlights the care that every single student took whilst replying. It was fantastic to witness their surprise, curiosity, and enthusiasm whilst reading the letters they received. 7

M3 American Themed Drama Evening We celebrated the 4th of July (US Independence Day) in style this year with two entertaining performances from M3 (Year 9) featuring an American theme. It was such a delight to see an entire year group being involved in drama productions. Congratulations to all the students and staff involved.

Community Charity Perfomance
Thank you to all who helped and supported our performance of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory last term. It was such a great night, all of the students from Year 3 to Year 6 were involved and they, too, enjoyed it. We had a collection on the evening for our two chosen charities and collected £284 that has been shared between WWF and the North London Hospice.
Wear It Wild
This term the Lower School supported WWF by having a Wear It Wild Day. The purpose of the day was to heighten the students’ awareness of the need to protect wild animals and endangered species. For more details check the website https://wearitwild.wwf.org.uk/
Supporting CalAID
Congratulations to Nick in D1 who presented CalAID a cheque for £300 this term. Nick raised the money via a shoebox appeal as part of his IB CAS project. For more information go to http://www.calaid. co.uk/.
Out and About
The Dwight Out and About Parents Club used their last date of the term to take a leisurely cruise from Little Venice to Camden along the canal. A great time was had by all, viewing the sites of the city from the waterway as well as learning about the history of the canals and their important function in moving cargo while pulled by horses. Underneath the bridges you can still see rope wearings in the stone from when the horses would be dragging the boats! The Dwight Out and About Parents Club will continue next year with scheduled monthly outings for members of the Dwight parent community to get out and about in the great city of London!
Indulgence Evening
Many thanks to Naomi Donne and her team for arranging a wonderful indulgence evening for the parents and staff this term. Through their efforts the Parent Association raised £320 for the Upper School student nominated charity, The Children’s Society. We are looking forward to more pampering at their next event already!

Beyond the Classroom M2 - M4 Spanish Trip!
M2 - M4 (Year 8-10) had a great and sunny time in Spain. They enjoyed wandering around the wonderful Malaga old quarters, visiting the old fortress Alcazaba and the Picasso museum. They loved the paella and some of them were delighted with the fresh fish cooked on coal at the beach. The Nazari palaces at La Alhambra from Granada took them back to the times of the magnificent Andalusi period. Four adventurous students took the challenge of walking to the highest point of Granada to admire Alhambra from the distance at the hottest hour of the day. They share many fun and lovely memories but their highlight was their time at the beach after each busy day.
Reception and Year 2 have fun at the Science Museum
Reception students visited the Science Museum this term. They really enjoyed the interactive section of the museum which is in the basement and where there are some fantastic water and light-based activities. They also took part in the story of the Three Little Pigs. They enjoyed re-enacting the story and learnt about different materials too. Year 2 also had a great time visiting the Science Museum. They got to meet Isaac Newton who talked with them about forces, specifically pushes and pulls. They also learnt more about light linking in with their Unit of Inquiry this term. Screen Printing at the Wallace Collection Year 5 classes visited the Wallace Collection on Thursday. They enjoyed the visit and they learnt about some of the exhibits. They worked with different textiles and they even did some screen printing. The trip went well and the students learnt that creativity can be expressed in many different ways.
Going wild in Kew Gardens Year 1 and Year 3 went to Kew Gardens as part of their studies on Plants and Rainforests. Year 3 attended a rainforest workshop and learnt how to measure the air humidity, the moisture in soil, and the temperature of the soil. They asked lots of questions and learnt how plants survive in such an environment. Year 1 had a workshop about plants and they went around Kew identifying different plants by their colour, shape, flowers, and leaves. It was a lovely way to complete their unit about plants. 14
