Teachers have other equally important commitments Giving teachers plenty of advanced notice will improve the quality of references You will not receive a reference by giving 24 hr notice So, don’t put off for tomorrow, what you can do today!

UK UNIVERSITY PLANNING CALENDAR :In D1 ●  Now--Obtain and review prospectuses from universities in which you are interested ●  Latest admission requirements are available online ●  Now and through the year--Visit universities and make final decisions on courses. ●  Work on personal statement. ●  Go on taster courses. ●  At the end of D1 --all D1 students will register on UCAS and start their University application

These are not for Dwight they are set by UCAS and the Universities themselves so missing means missing an opportunity

UK UNIVERSITY PLANNING CALENDAR : In D2 ●  September—Personal statement drafts ●  October—Finalise Cambridge, Oxford and Medicine Applications ●  Final Personal statement submission ●  Course searches and Guidance meeting— ●  November - Reference requests from teachers that know you academically and personally ●  December- 1 December, Dwight Deadline for UCAS Applications ●  January—15 January, UCAS Deadline ●  March—Offers Received Firm and insurance choice finalised ●  May—IB Exams ●  July—IB Results, offers met and places are confirmed


Tuition Fees ●  Max £9,000 in UK ●  Approximately $60,000 a year for USA ●  Europe? Tuition fees differ for different countries. ●  Japan? Universities need proof you can pay all of your expenses while studying

US APPLICATIONS UNIVERSITY PLANNING CALENDAR Early Decision ● Apply early in October/November (D2) ●  Will receive decision well in advance of the spring notification date (Dec/Jan) ●  Sometimes a better chance of acceptance than through the normal admissions process ●  Quality of CAS can be critical for application ●  Go to http://www.collegeweeklive.com/ for virtual tours. ●  College tours are also available in the summer


US APPLICATIONS PROCESS ●  UNIVERSITY PLANNING CALENDAR Early Decision ●  Binding ●  May only apply to one university through Early Decision. Others through normal route ●  If accepted, must withdraw from other applications


US APPLICATIONS PROCESS UNIVERSITY PLANNING CALENDAR Early Action ●  Similar to Early Decision, but NOT binding ●  Can choose to commit or wait until spring ●  New – Single Entry Early Action Same as Early Action, but candidates may not apply early to any other school and can wait to decide


US UNIVERSITY PLANNING CALENDAR IN D1 ●  Now--Obtain and review prospectuses from universities in which you are interested ●  Now– Register for SAT in the autumn ●  Summer--Visit universities and make final decisions on universities. Work on application essays.


US UNIVERSITY PLANNING CALENDAR In D2: ●  September - October Register and take SATs, complete and submit application forms ●  December/Early January— Send in applications to universities ●  March through April— Receive offers ●  May— IB Examinations ●  July—IB Results ●  Late August/ Early September-- Arrive at university

Course Selection

•  Make sure your IB classes are acceptable for entrance into your chosen course •  Use the course search feature on www.ucas.com Unsure?? •  Morrisby In-depth Aptitude test (gordon.ceslondon@gmail.com) We will hold the Morrisby test this year on the 13th of November with feedback on the 19th/ 20th


Personal Statements ●  It is important but not the end-all and be-all of the application ●  Get pen to paper or fingers to typing ●  Start with three bullet points: ●  Sentence about why you want to apply to the course ●  Sentence about your current studies ●  Paragraph about you ●  80/20 academic/personal balance


Things to be aware of ●  SAT: Scholastic Aptitude Test ●  Required in USA, ME, Asia, Far East ●  SAT I: General Test of Knowledge ●  Reading, Maths, Writing ●  SAT II: Subject Specific Tests ●  TOEFL: Test of English as a Foreign Language ●  US Embassy ●  IELTS: International English Language Testing System ●  British High Commission
