Jim Ferree, first living logo of PGA Tour Champions, dies at 91 Via Golfweek/USA Today
Jim Ferree, who won two Champions tour events and the 1958 Vancouver Open on the PGA Tour, died Tuesday. He was 91 years old.
Ferree graduated from North Carolina and was widely regarded as one of the best teeto-green players of his generation. He also wore trademark knickers and a flat hat.
He joined the PGA Tour Champions in 1981 (then known as the Senior PGA Tour). ThenPGA Tour commissioner Deane Beman chose Ferree to be the model for the knickerswearing player on that Tour’s logo and, thus, created a living logo.
While still active on PGA Tour Champions, he became the head pro at Westmoreland Country Club in Pennsylvania, and in 1991, he became the first golfer inducted into the University of North Carolina’s Hall of Fame. Click to Read the Full Story

Jim was our first Director of Golf at Long Cove Club beginning in 1980 and was instrumental in developing the Club in its early years, including influencing Pete & Alice Dye to design our course.
Jim Ferree's contribution to Long Cove Club goes beyond the golf course. His character helped build the culture. He was a friend to everyone, and he will be missed by all who had the good fortune of knowing him.
In celebration of the Club's 40th anniversary, we produced a video about Jim's professional career and impact at Long Cove Club. Click to View the Video.

From The PGA on March 15, 2023
The PGA of America has released the following statement regarding the recent Distance Proposal from the USGA and R&A:
As we have previously stated to the USGA and the R&A, we are strongly opposed to any rules changes that will make the game less fun for recreational golfers. Regarding this specific area of interest, we are pleased that there is no longer a focus on changing or modifying the ball or clubs that recreational players may use.
We are not in favor of bifurcation and do not anticipate individual club’s implementing such a Model Local Rule as it is meant for elite players.
In regards to the PGA Championship, 2026 is still a long way off and until we know the specifics of the proposed Model Local Rule we are not in a position to make that determination.
