INTRODUCTION
Water is imperative to our World. Our World cannot do without it, in fact it is constantly all around us. Other than the obvious need for consumption for survival, water holds many other important values to us. In all cultures, water symbolises many things. From fortune to purity, these expands the values and hence our experiences with it. From cleansing to transportation, water offers a variety of functions too. Water is one unique element that comes in various forms and has an expansive set of properties. This conceptual design project is undertaken by the year 2 students in the Diploma in Experience and Product Design. Students are challenged to explores their understanding, values and expression of water.
PATTERNS OF WATER Water, the epitome of liquid, provides a calming visual quality with its random wave movement with light shining on water. This quality is amplified when light is shone on water. The random reflections and refractions would provide a mystical and lively projection.

Reflect ion Shade Reflection Shade is a lamp which gives off the same visual effect of the refractions of water on to the nearby wall when the lamp is switched on. The refraction effect is caused by the transparency with equal length of cuttings and gaps. Transparency is best material used in reflecting light and it projects the refraction effect well. Multiple tries were made in cutting and forming the flat transparency sheet in to a 3D organic form to get the visual effect.
MAKING OF RAINBOWS Water has a unique quality to distil light into a rainbow, this due to water’s ability to refract and disperse light from the moment it enter water’s surface. The higher density of water cause light to separate bend and act as a lens to split into its seven rudimentary colours which result in a rainbow. But in nature, rainbows are phenomena seldom seen by us.
Rainbow Maker Rainbow Maker captures this effect and it’s portable for the user to enjoy this sight instead of waiting for a rainy day. When the Rainbow Maker is place near a window, sunlight that enter the water prism gets refracted and the smaller prisms inside ample the effect by producing multiple smaller clones on a surface.
DIFFUSION IN WATER Water itself has movement within it which cannot be seen to the naked eye due to its transparency and colour and where the water molecules sliding pass each other randomly. It creates an unpredictable movement to be seen, colour can be added to it, so there will be a greater contrast between the molecules sliding past each other, another way to bring out this effect is by adding denser liquids in liquids that are less dense.
Syrup Diffuser The Syrup Diffuser holds the capacity of 15 ml of liquid which help you to get the right measurement for your favourite cocktail. When the syrup is being release from the dropper, it goes out from the tiny slits between every swirl of the dropper and into the glass. When the coloured syrup meets the clear liquid, it unveils the beautiful movement hidden in the water as it swirls around in the water. What happen in the glass now is more than making a cocktail but a show that celebrates the beauty of water movement. Sit back and enjoy!
FENG SHUI Water is one of the major elements in Feng Shui. It’s an ancient symbol of wealth and prosperity. People who practice Feng Shui would place the water feature that symbolises the element in their homes as they believe negative energy will leave the house while the positive will stay. The water feature can be a physical like having a pond with koi fish or a visual representation of water like the waterfall painting.

Goldfish Tray Goldfish Tray is a decorative tray for home indoor furniture. It is a representation of koi fish in the pond and water in the context of Feng Shui. The tray would be an ideal water feature for users who want to have a Feng Shui in their house but do not want to make use of actual water. In the tray, there will be two coloured type of Fish. One of the Fish would be in Black and it has the purpose to absorb the negative energy that enters the user’s home. The Goldfish Tray would be placed indoors in the North
area of the living room of the house. The unique part of the tray is that it enables users to place their product correctly because the Fish will act as their own compass. The Fish would face the South direction upon being placed at the North part of the living room. With the Goldfish tray placed at home, the users will have negative energy being absorb and leave from the house while the positive energy will stay.
SONGKRAN Songkran festival is a Thai’s way of celebrating New Year. The Songkran festival is about cleaning, purification, and fresh start. The more water one person is sprinkled, the more luck he received, and the happier he will be. During the day of celebration, people will roam around the streets as they bring water with them so they can splash it on other people. Due to the heat of the sun, throwing water is always fun and refreshing to the Thais. They also cleanse their Buddha images at home and in the monasteries by pouring them with water containing various fragrances and flower petals after which they offer prayers and rituals. This tradition is believed to be bringing good luck and prosperity.

Blessing Bomb Blessing Bomb contains rose petals, chrysanthemum petals and jasmine bud. Small petals are put into the Blessing Bomb because in Songkran the water is often perfumed by flower petals that have beautiful fragrance, such as jasmine. Sometimes, the flower petals are also added for delicate look. The flower petals are visible as transparent balloon are used to present the beauty of Songkran. When the Blessing Bomb is being thrown at the person, the Blessing Bomb will explode and the flower fragrance will released into the air. Therefore, the person is able to feel a sense of refreshing through the coolness of the water and the flower fragrance.
WATER MOVEMENT Water can slow down movement, therefore everything underwater looks like it is in slow motion. When a movement happens underwater, we can see how it falls in a slow and beautiful manner.

Floater This product helps to showcase how things can move differently in water. Silk is used as it is lighter weight causing a more obvious movement. Squeezing the bottle causes the eyedropper to sink because of the increased pressure forces water up into it, compressing the air at the top of the eyedropper.
WATER STAGNAT ION Water can be hazardous if it’s left unattended and it would attracts mosquitoes to breed on causing a spread of the disease to people. Especially after watering the potted plants, it needs to be taken care of to prevent any stagnant water found in the tray at the bottom of the potted plant.
Foam Tray Foam Tray is a potted plant tray which is designed for user in reducing their hassle work by checking the presence of stagnant water each time they had water the plant. The Foam Tray eliminates any stagnant water by absorbing the water. Water stains could be seen on the Foam Tray as water is being absorbed. The material use would be floral foam and on its base, it will be painted with a sealer. So with the Foam Tray, it would help to prevent mosquitoes breeding on stagnant water.
This publication is developed by DESIGN FACILITY. DESIGN FACILITY is a space of discovery, offering the right setting to be explorative and inquisitive. Structured as a research laboratory, the facility seeks to uncover the hidden and latent conditions that characterises our experience of the everyday. It is a space that allows us to look beyond what is present, generating new approaches and methodologies within the field of experience design. The facility is also a platform where projects of interest are incubated and brought towards an application relevant in the industry. DESIGN FACILITY is a part of the Diploma in Experience and Product Design, SP Design School.
