‘How to Smell an Orange’ is a design project to engage participants to explore and consider how scent (or food scents) can be created to enhance dining experiences. Participants go through a series of imaginative, thought provoking and experimental exercises so as to rethink and reframe the notion of smelling. The following is a selection of concepts that reconsiders how we approach and create interesting olfactory experiences. - Winston Chai Project Lead

Inspired by the grinding of coffee beans, this concept explores and experimented with grinding of orange peel as a method of scent release. Fresh orange peels are cut into small granules and put into a pepper grinder. Not only does the grinding action bring about a waft of orange scent, the grinded flakes can serve as a flavour enhancer for food.

Just like how the seeds of the dandelion leave its body and get dispersed into the air, the skin of the orange is dried and pounded into powder. The uy ball is dabbed with the orange powder, allowing one to blow the orange dust, releasing a mild scent in the air.

An orange is cored out, making it like a hand pump. By squeezing the cored-out orange, it works like the pump, ejecting orange scented air.

By adding orange juice onto dry ice, the gases emitted from the reaction serve as scent agents. The mysterious cloud-like formation of gases creates an alluring visual expression for this form of scent dispensing.
