IAN RUSSELL’S SPOD MIX
IAN RUSSELL’S
‘GO ANYWHERE’ SPOD WHEN THE FISH WANT MORE - SPODDING IS THE WAY… On heavier stocked day-tickets through to tough syndicate waters, when you’re looking to draw in a few fish, spodding is a great way to get them grubbing. It allows you to put out a handful or a few kilos of loosefeed in a tight area with speed and accuracy. As with all things carp fishing, there are no hard and fast rules and everyone has their own favourite spod mix. This is Ian Russell’s, the one he would take anywhere in the world with total confidence. Keeping things simple, Ian uses a few tried and tested ingredients; the first being hempseed.
To finish off the mix, Ian adds Citrus Oil. This absorbs into all the crumb and Hempseed is a classic base for most other particles, providing massive spod mixes, the next is sweetcorn amounts of attraction over long which gives a lovely flash of colour periods. and all carp love corn! Ian reckons that Citrus Oil is a Pure Crushed Hempseed and massive edge that he rarely sees Halibut pellets are next in, then the any other anglers using. It will whole mix is finished with boilie leak off for a long time and create crumb, in this case it’s Ian’s favourite attraction in the upper layers, pulling Monster Tiger Nut. carp down to your baited area.

WASHED-OUT BOILIES
WHAT A WASHOUT! WASHING-OUT YOUR BOILIES PRIOR TO A SESSION CAN INCREASE YOUR ACTION To the untrained eye, taking perfectly good boilies out of a bag and then soaking them in water for 3 or 4 days seems like madness. But, believe it or not, washed-out baits are a brilliant edge when tackling a range of carp waters.
Washing-out your baits with water may sound barmy, but, it can actually really help in the long run, especially on hard lakes, where the fish know they are being fished for. But, also on pressured day-ticket lakes, where the fish have seen it all.
The main advantages of fishing with washed-out baits is firstly, on tricky waters, where the fish have ‘seen it all’, washed-out bait will appear much older and therefore safer to eat.
Give it a go. It’s easy to do and you may just be surprised at the results…
Secondly, especially with nut-based boilies, by washing them out, you start the fermentation process, which makes the baits even better! But the main advantage is that it makes the boilies very soft and softer baits are much easier for the carp to digest, meaning they eat more and ultimately you should catch more. You can make your washed-out baits even better, try ‘washing-in’ the corresponding ReHydration Liquid as this will help to release all of the bait’s natural sugars etc. For an extra little edge, coat the baits in oil to prevent silt permeating the baits and then cover them with crushed hemp to make the baits really active in the water.

WASHED-OUT BOILIES
1 Empty a kilo of Complex-T into a bait bucket.
2 Cover the bolies with a quarter of a bottle of Complex-T Re-Hydration Liquid
3 N ow, completely cover the boilies with water and stir well.
4 Leave the baits to sit for two-days to ‘wash out’.
5 Pour off the water and retain for adding to groundbaits and spod mixes.
6 L ightly coat all the baits in Evolution Smoked Salmon Oil.
7 Cover the oiled-up baits with either Crushed Hemp or boilie crumb.
8 The finished baits give you a real edge over those fishing straight out of the bag.

BOOSTED HOOKBAITS
BOOSTED HOOKBAITS DYNAMITE HOOKBAITS ARE PACKED FULL OF ATTRACTANTS, BUT THERE’S ALWAYS AN EDGE TO ADDING SOMETHING EXTRA ! Boilies have caught millions of carp over the years, but here’s a quick bait tip to get more from your boilies that you can even do on the bank! With these hookbaits, the built-up layers of Frenzied Hemp Worm Meal groundbait and various liquids will slowly breakdown in the water over time, leaving a nice parcel of attraction around your rig and in the water layers. After seeing this in action, the worm meal erupts in the water column, something that not many fish can ignore.
1 All the ingredients you’ll need.
8
2 Pour a little Worm Liquid carp Food into a tub.
3 Add an equal amount of Complex-T Re-Hydration liquid.
BOOSTED HOOKBAITS
4 Stir the two liquids until they are fully mixed.
5 Take a few Complex-T Hardened Hookbaits.
6 And place them in the liquid mixture, making sure they are all fully coated.
7 In a second tub, pour some Frenzied Hemp Worm Meal groundbait.
8 Add the wet baits to the dry groundbait and fully coat - repeat the liquid groundbait coating four times.
9 Roll the hookbaits in your hand so the groundbait fully adheres.
10 Leave them to dry out for a few hours to let the boosted coating to set hard before use.

PVA BAG MIX
IAN RUSSELL’S
PVA BAG MIX SMALL PVA BAGS ARE GREAT FOR MANY REASONS… Whether looking to present a bait over a carpet of loosefeed, or simply cast at a showing fish, I like to use small mesh bags of PVA.
As well as matching the hookbait, the Monster Tiger Nut Boilie crumb is very visible and being crumbed, it’s flavours, tastes and attractors quickly leak into the water.
As well as adding a little bit of attraction around the hookbait, the weight of the small PVA bag helps prevent tangles on the cast.
I add a third of a bag of pure crushed hempseed so the bag is very active. The Crushed Hemp will rise and fall, helping to draw fish towards the bag and hookbait.
My mix comprises of equal parts Dynamite 4mm Halibut Pellets; Monster Tiger Nut Boilie Crumb; Pure Crushed Hempseed and a squirt of Evolution Smoked Salmon Oil. The reason I use these specific baits is they all bring that ‘something special’ to the mix. Halibut Pellets make a great base for any bag mix. It will keep the fish grubbing for hours, even though there’s only a handful in the bag.
Ian uses: 4mm Halibut Pellets, Monster Tiger Nut Boilie Crumb, Pure Crushed Hempseed and Evolution Smoked Salmon Oil. 10
Finally, I add a good glug of Smoked Salmon Oil for many reasons - It will rise in the swim, drawing fish down; It soaks into the rest of the bag mix, giving hours of attraction and it helps prevent the PVA melting too quickly. Remember though, don’t make bags up too far in advance of your trip, or the PVA will absorb too much oil and slow the PVA meltdown dramatically.
PVA BAG MIX
1 Start by pouring one-third bag 3mm Halibut pellets into a bucket.
2 Now, add a half-kilo of crumbed Monster Tiger Nut boilies.
3 Then add one-third bag of Pure Crushed Hempseed
4 Mix all the dry ingredients together well with a bait scoop.
5 Finish off the mixture with a good glug of Smoked Salmon Oil.
6 Tie your bags using 30mm Carp Spirit Soluron PVA mesh.
7 Fill the PVA mesh bag with enough mixture to form a two-inch bag.
8 Compact the contents and tie the bag off tightly, prior to cutting it off.
9 The bag may seem quite small, but it produces a large area of loosefeed that pops, fizzes and crackles in the water.

SPOT THE HOOKBAIT
IT’S PARTI-TIME! BY SWAPPING THE APPROACH OF PELLETS & POP-UPS FOR PARTICLES, YOUR CATCH RATE CAN ROCKET… Boilies, pellets and pop-ups will catch loads of specimen carp, however, adopting a particle approach on those ‘tough days’ can bring results. The problem that can present itself is how a plain pellet and hi-vis pop-up combo can produce a ‘Fried Egg’ presentation. A load of 4mm or 6mm carp pellets in a solid PVA bag, with a bright hi-viz 15mm pop-up fished over the top. On pressured day-ticket lakes, lots of anglers try to ‘out bait’ each other, spodding masses of particles. The carp, especially the warier ones get used to seeing and feeding on this free feast, as they know as long as they avoid the ‘little bright balls’ in amongst the loosefeed, they’re as ‘safe as houses’.
The finished mix.
12
When using particle loosefeed, try hairrigging a particle over the top. The carp find it very difficult to pick out my hookbait from the dozens of other kernels of maize etc and so they get hooked without even knowing they’re being fished for - until it’s too late of course. Comparatively, the price of a pure particle spod mix is about the same as a couple of bags of 6mm pellets and a tub or two of pop-ups. Easy, cheap and highly effective, the big difference between using this mix and others approach though, is when you’re playing ‘yet another’ carp, all they can do is look on, wishing it was ‘parti-time’ in their swim too!
SPOT THE HOOKBAIT
1 Thread a length of dental floss through the small swivel.
2 Pull the floss through a kernel of maize.
3 Now, carefully push the maize onto the swivel.
4 Tie a couple of overhand knots in the floss.
5 Finally, snip off the excess floss.
6 The final presentation is prefect for fishing over beds of particles.
7 The hookbait is disguised perfectly amongst the Spod Mix.

TIGER NUT CHOD
SOMETHINGDIFFERENT… ON SOME WATERS, DOING THINGS A BIT DIFFERENT FROM THE ‘NORM’ CAN STACK THINGS IN YOUR FAVOUR When it comes to the ‘cast anywhere, anytime’ rig, you have to go a long way to beat a Chod.
you a lot of fish, if you follow the common herd, you’ll enjoy the same results as everyone else.
The fact that it is a presentation based around a very buoyant pop-up hookbait, that is able to slide well down the length of the leader, you are safe in the knowledge that your rig is always fishing. This also makes it the perfect choice for casting at showing fish.
Tiger nuts are hugely under-rated and extremely under used, which is madness as carp adore them. Again though, they are always presented as either single or possibly doubled-up bottom baits.
The one downside is that most anglers look no further than a typical 14mm to 15mm hi-viz pop-up and although this will catch
The finished chod presentation is very different from the ‘standard’ Pop-up hookbait. 14
By drilling them out and adding a length of cork dowel, you can make a great alternative chod rig hookbait, that we guarantee the carp have never seen and more importantly haven’t learnt how to deal with.
TIGER NUT CHOD
1 Start by carefully drilling out the centre of a Frenzied Monster Tiger Nut.
2 Next, push a length of cork dowel through the nut.
3 Repeat with a second nut, with the third, only drill two-thirds through the bait.
4 Using a pair of side cutters, trim the cork dowel flush with the nuts.
5 Carefully push a stringer needle through the centre of the cork dowel.
6 Now, pull a length of Carp Spirit Bait Floss back through all three tiger nuts.
7 Using the Bait Floss, tie the three tiger nuts to a Chod Rig.

MIX IT UP
‘MIX IT UP’ SOME WATERS RESPOND BETTER TO A FISHMEAL APPROACH & OTHERS TO NUT BAITS - SO WHY NOT FISH BOTH AT ONCE? Mixing things up can be the key to catching consistently, so here’s a great bait edge that allows you to present both a fishmeal and nut-based hookbait at the same time. Using a mixture of Dynamite Tuff Paste, you can very easily form a unique and bespoke hookbait that the fish will never have seen. Perfect for fooling those big wary carp. By wrapping around 3mm to 4mm of the paste around an 8mm cork ball, once formed,
Paste is highly effective but exrtremely under used in speciment.
16
the hookbaits are boiled for two-minutes prior to being air-drying for seven days. As well as being a much smaller hookbait, which works very well with PVA bags of small pellets, over a short period of time, the paste wrap will also start to slowly dissolve and breakdown. This pumps loads of attraction into the water - even more than a boilie over the same time period, meaning that quite often you experience quicker bites.
MIX IT UP
1 Take a small pinch of both Tuff pastes.
2 Mould the pastes together until they are one colour.
3 Place an 8mm corkball into the centre of the combined pastes.
4 Roll the paste around the ball until you make a small hookbait.
5 Once bolied (right) the paste takes longer to breakdown in the water.

THE METHOD MIX
METHOD FISHING ISN’T JUST FOR MATCH ANGLERS… STEVE COE PUTS THE METHOD FEEDER BACK ON THE CARP-FISHING MAP As a carp-catching tactic, the Method brings quite a lot to the party. • It has a totally different presentation in the water, compared to spodding or solid PVA bag fishing. Plus, when the payload breaks down it completely covers the feeder, whereas with PVA bags, the lead is always visible. • As the payload is packed onto the feeder, you can use what you like when it comes to Method feeder fishing. • Wet baits, like corn as well as loads of different liquids, to produce a huge flavour and taste trail in the water can be used with the Method with ease.
• It’s a tactic you can cast almost anywhere, within reason. As long as it is loaded so the hookbait isn’t sticking out, you can cast it into weed and it will still present perfectly. This also makes it ideal for casting at showing fish, as you don’t always know what the lakebed is like in that area, but you can be confident of still getting a bite. • It’s quicker to load and recast the Method than it is to tie up a solid PVA bag. On waters like Linear’s B1 or B2, where the fish travel in shoals, the faster you can recast the more you tend to catch. The ‘Method Mix’ Although the hookbait is important, the payload is also of paramount importance and Dynamites’ Green Swim Stim range of pellets is the ideal base. The pellets need to be moistened, so that they turn sticky and will adhere to the feeder. As well as lake water, the use of various liquids will give you a great edge. Here’s one example of a Method mix, but there are no rules, so let your imagination run wild!
18
THE METHOD MIX
1 Fill a bait tub with lakewater.
2 Add a little Sweet Tiger Liquid.
3 ‌then a squirt of Citrus Oil.
4 Pour a mixture of pellets into a bucket.
5 Next, pour the flavoured water over the pellets.
6 Add a handful of corn, mix well and leave for 30 minutes.
7 Fill the Method mould with the pellet and corn loosefeed.
8 Firmly press the Method feeder into the mould to load.
9 The bag may seem quite small, but it produces a large area of loosefeed that pops, fizzes and crackles in the water.
