the works in this porfolio are interpreted against a distilled protocol of my honours thesis work in novel cancer therapeutics. Thus, these projects are grouped by a common process. It is the hope that through these processes, novel and confounding results can be obtained.

The process of
isolation
This x-ray of a multiple myeloma patient shows the cancer infiltrating the bone, causing lesions and fractures
Definition
Isolation is the process of detecting and sequestering a subject of interest. Only then is it possible to take a targeted approach to study and manipulate those substances.
Design
Phenomena are isolated and used as the driving force behind the formal language of the architecture. In photography, subjects can be isolated by cropping and framing to produce an effect.
Cancer
Multiple myeloma cancer cells hide in the bone marrow, impenetrable to most common cancer therapies. By using oncolytic viruses, we can specifically target cancer while avoiding healthy cells.

ISOLATION
_Synesthetic Symbiosis Fall 2015 University of Calgary ARST 484 - Studio I Instructor: Jason Johnson
Design Brief This house explored the design of a space of habitation for human and animal species. The client is a world renowned violinist and experiences the condition known as synesthesia. Synesthesia is a neurological anomaly where the senses are mixed, and stimulation of one sense can trigger another. In this case, the client is able to ‘see’ sound in colours. Since she was small, the synesthete was obsessed with the sounds of the black-billed magpie, a bird species native to Alberta. She described sound as having “a sparse round grey shape to it”.

The site is situated in a semi-urban area, with a major freeway, urban park and railway located adjacent to the site. These wproduce undesirable point source noise for the client’s synesthesia. With Magpies prefering open fields and tall trees, the strategy was to shape the house from external pressures to deflect noise and isolate sounds from the park where the magpies reside. Further to this, spaces for the birds were subtracted from the house massing, creating spaces of interaction.
ISOLATION
Form Generation and Articulation Like catching lightning in a bottle, the design of the house aims to capture the sparsity and shape of the synesthetic experience, turning the house into a “synesthetic landscape for the other building occupants to experience. Various techniques were used including lofting the profiles of magpie soundwaves and further articulating with grasshopper. Ultimately, T-splines were used in conjunction with grasshopper algorithms to articulate surfaces. The select results of these experimentations are shown on the right.
Material/ Tectonics Order To further emphasize the effect of sparsity, surfaces were fenestrated to allow light penetration. Glossy materials were chosen for the interior to reflect sound and produce echos.

The process of
incubation
KMS11 human myeloma cell line used in the testing of novel therapeutics
Definition
Incubation is the period of time for reactions to occur, for substances and substrates to evolve. It is a period of growth or decay, where change in systems can be measured.
Design
Periods of change can greatly inform the design and the context in which a piece of architecture is placed. To incubate is to study and anticipate a certain trajectory for the design. To incubate a design is also to let external pressures evolve it. This can be done by producing multiple iterations, but also designing the process to let algorithms cycle through permutations.
Cancer
In treating cancer, time seems to be the enemy. To let the cancer incubate is to let it grow and metastasize. Some drugs may push the cancer into quiescence. In the laboratory, cancer cells must be incubated and proliferated for experiments to be conducted. It is all a matter of time and change.

Design Brief The city of Somerville, MA is aiming to build a film archive in the historic Union Square. With two T stations planned to be built in the near vicinity of the site, this presented an opportunity to revitalize the automobile and industry heavy area adjacent to Union square. This project looked at exploring what the typology of a film archive meant, especially with the role of archiving the past, interpreting film in its present, and anticipating what film will bring in the future. Site Analysis
drumlin geological formation
carve away to create sound shadow
Upon inspection of the site, it was noted that it was deeply ingrained in history. North of the site was a monument dedicated to the raising of the first American flag on Prospect Hill, Union Square was the mustering site for soldiers in the American Cival War, and the large number of automobile-related buildings are a remnant of the former Ford assembly plant in the area, recalling the era of drive-in theatres. To take this further, the geological history was examined, and found that Somerville is situated on a glacial landscape. The drumlin, a glacial deposit of rock that forms a hill, became the starting point for the form of the film archive.

Project Vision This project aimed to situate itself to be a cultural icon, establishing monumentality, while respecting the diverse and historical culture of Union Square and Somerville. With a lack of ambient park space, a roof top park was lifted above the surrounding traffic to decrease noise pollution. These spaces doubled as theatre spaces for outdoor movies.

The process of
inoculation
A scanning electron microscope detects the infection of cancer cells with oncolytic viruses
Definition
To inoculate is to introduce an organism into a system. Just as viruses can infect cells and alter their state, so too can a design interventions alter the state of the environment.
Design
To successfully introduce an intervention, the conditions in which is to occur must be fully studied. This can be done through rigorous site analysis, by studying the compositions of a particular subject and through experimentation. This new knowledge is taken forward into the implementation of the final product.
Cancer
Successful oncolytic virus infection the right conditions. Several methods be inoculated with ex vivo allogenic apheresis. Other methods have looked at to produce synergistic responses.

Intervention Location
Design Brief This project focused an understanding of the landscape to a observation platform, and the overall future of the site. The task was to analyze the park adjacent to shaganappi golf course in Calgary, AB. Next, an
ephemeral quality of the site was chosen to integrate into the viewing platform. With an interest in the ephemeral qualities of the site, the strong presence of wind was chosen as the factor that would inform the design of the structure.

Site Analysis Wind direction and intensity were measured at ground level across the site using a vaneometer, reading wind speeds with a maximum of 2.0 m/s. Data was recorded over three time points across 6 days. It was noted that predominant winds were northsouth, and direction is influenced by both topography and vegetation. With viewsheds and site circulation in mind, the observation platform was placed in a location with a consistent strong presence of wind.

this piece now sits in the University of Calgary’s Cumming School of Medicine. To understand the twisting, torquing movement of a bull, the bone structure and anatomy of the animal was carefully studied. As a commentary on canadianchinese culture, the bull’s movement is complimented by the mosaic: strength through diversity.
