King Valley is like a little Italy, where dynamic Italian migrant families established wineries focused on the popular Italian varietals. Pizzini is one, making their way from Trentino (Northern Italy) to the King Valley in 1956. Wine critic, Jeni Port (Halliday Wine Companion) says "Pizzini's standard prosecco from the King Valley certainly carries a lot of style and depth. Fresh apples, pear with an almost piercing lemon-citrus brightness that carries the day. The texture is supple yet retains plenty of chalky, citrusy drive. Vibrant plus and far from standard".

Kemenys RRP $642.99
Champagne, stands as the pinnacle of sparkling wine. Its history dates back to the 17th century, when Benedictine monks began experimenting with secondary fermentation in bottles. This (then) innovative technique gave rise to the unique bubbles and complex flavours that define champagne.
The production of champagne is a meticulous process, requiring precise attention to detail at every stage. From selecting the ideal grape varieties (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier) to controlling the fermentation and aging, each vital step contributes to the final product. Méthode Champenoise, the traditional method of producing champagne, involves a second fermentation in the bottle, followed by more time in bottle to allows the flavours to develop and mature.
Champagne's reputation extends far beyond its effervescence. Its complex flavours, ranging from tightly wound citrus and stone fruit with delicate floral notes to rich, buttery pastry-like nuances, make it an extremely versatile and sophisticated beverage. Whether enjoyed on its own or paired with fine cuisine, champagne offers a truly exceptional experience.

Coonawarra Cabernet Franc 2023 (KHL 1183)
Region: Coonawarra Rating: 95/100
We are excited to find a quality Cabernet Franc to put under our Hidden Label. Cabernet Franc is the mysterious parent grape of the more famous Cabernet Sauvignon. It's rare to see Cabernet Franc as a straight variety but it does thrive in cool climates such as the Coonawarra. This tiny make is from the estate of one of the most famous wineries in the Coonawarra. Single batch, single vineyard. A lighter, elegant style of red. Oak plays a subtle understatement to the fragrance of the fruit. With a round, long, textured palate that is persistent, elegant, silky and creamy.

Corvezzo Organic Pinot Grigio 2023
Region: Venezie Rating: 94/100CC
Founded in 1960, the same year as Kemenys, and based in the village of Cessalto near Treviso, Corvezzo was awarded organic certification in 2017. Transition to 100% organically farmed vineyards began under third-generation owner/winemaker Giovanni Corvezzo, soon after he took over at the helm in 2009. According to Corvezzo, who describes his winery's signature style as fresh and bright, organic farming ultimately results in thicker grape skins, leading to heightened aromas, greater balance, and superior quality wines. Corvezzo Pinot Grigio balances peach and tropical notes with a persistent minerality. There is an appealing roundness due to the 5% aged in oak. Great value for an organic wine. We suspect that this will be a hit.

Fantini Calalenta Pecorino 2022
Region: Abruzzo & Le Mache Rating: 97/100CC
When influential Italian wine critic Luca Maroni rated this his highest rating of 99 points (he doesn't give 100/100) we just had to try it. Wow! Straw yellow colour with greenish highlights. Aromas of white pulp fruit, especially pears, and balsamic notes. On the palate it shows excellent intensity and concentration with a full body. Whilst it's a crisp aromatic, white to be enjoyed in its youth (yet a slash of oak adds to its complexity and age worthiness. This would make a fantastic (and highly interesting) match with a lobster or roast chicken. Worthy gold medal winner at the Frankfurt International Trophy 2022.

THE GREAT AUSTRALIAN RED
‘The Great Australian Red’, a celebrated blend of shiraz and cabernet sauvignon, epitomizes the innovation and craftsmanship of Australian winemaking. This distinctive combination has its roots in the late 19th century when early Australian winemakers experimented with various grape varieties. The blend gained prominence in the mid-20th century, particularly through the efforts of iconic winemaker Max Schubert at Penfolds, who created legendary wines like the 1962 Bin 60A, showcasing the potential of this harmonious partnership.
Shiraz, Australia’s most widely planted grape, contributes rich fruit flavours and a velvety texture, while cabernet sauvignon adds structure and depth with its firm tannins and blackcurrant notes. Together, they create a wine that is both approachable and complex, appealing to a broad audience.
European winemakers have long recognized the benefits of blending varieties to enhance flavour profiles and ensure consistency across vintages. In Australia, this tradition stalled with an obsession with straight varietal reds, but the worm has turned, with shiraz and cabernet sauvignon re-emerging as a key player in Australia’s wine identity.
‘The Great Australian Red’ not only reflects an important blending heritage but, crucially, can also offer keenly priced gems. Try these on for size.

From a stunning vintage, this is really good value. Compare it to other prestige reds, especially those with considerable time in the cellar already, and this seems like a steal. In the end, all that matters is whether or not it is a good wine. And it is extremely good. The wine spent 29 months in a mix of American and French oak barrels, all new. Deep maroon, even with eight years ageing, the wine is still poised and taut, and still needs time. The nose exhibits notes of dry herbs, mocha, coffee beans and cocoa powder all supported by black fruits. There are silky tannins, immaculate balance plus extreme length and it carries all before it. This still has a twenty year future. Date tasted: August 2024. Drink: 2024-2044. Price: $65. Rating: 96/100. Ken Gargett, Winepilot.com RRP $65

A more textural style that highlights how this variety thrives in McLaren Vale's warm. Mediterranean climate.

Tyrrells Hunter Valley Chardonnay 2024
Region: Hunter Valley Rating: 93/100C
Tyrrell's is a pioneer in Chardonnay in Australia with their Vat 47 being the first commercially released chardonnay. The Hunter Valley range Chardonnay is sourced primarily from their Casuarina vineyard with an average vine aged of 30 years. It actually sees the new French oak from the prior vintage's Vat 47 which promotes Tyrrell's desired style of Chardonnay that is generous in flavour, modern and approachable. The nose shows a great mixture of citrus, white stone fruit, some oak spice as well as just a hint of solids complexity. The palate is robust with great fruit intensity and texture through the mid-palate, with a soft acid finish. Famed international wine critic James Suckling says that its "hard to go past at the price".

Sons of Eden Marschall Shiraz 2022
Region: Barossa Valley Rating: 94/100CC
I like this. Unexpectedly fresh shiraz, full-weighted, detailed and impeccably poised. Bravo. A hint of reduction on the nose sashays effortlessly to clove, star anise and dusty riffs on turmeric and curry powder, before violets, blue fruits and iodine play a more typically regional shiraz card. This is my favorite wine of the recent suite in terms of sheer drinkability. Younger vines, longer extraction and superior tannins to the rest, the result. Crunch, sass and power all in one. GRIS VS GRIGIO
In Australia, winemakers have the flexibility to label their wines as either gris or grigio, leading to a diverse range of interpretations. Regions like Tasmania and the Mornington Peninsula are known for producing exceptional examples of both styles, making them a must-try for any wine enthusiast seeking to understand these delightful variations.
Generally, pinot grigio is associated with lighter, crisper wines that are typically harvested early, showcasing higher acidity and a focus on fresh fruit flavours. Rouleur Pinot Noir 2023
Region: Yarra Valley Rating: 94/100
Wine critic, Angus Hughson, says that "if you don't know the Rouleur Wine Co then now is the time to check them out as it's home to a small range of incredibly well priced wines that are deliciously subtle and understated. These are wines that rarely, if ever, disappoint". The wines are made by young gun winemaker Matt East. More silken and juicy than prior vintages, but ready to drink early with that seductive 'Pinot lift' and fragrance and abundant deep red cherries, blue fruits, rhubarb and tilled earth over subtle malt-like oak. Pizzini is one of the great names in the King Valley doing such great things with this and many other Italian varieties. This vibrant wine is ruby in colour with a red brick hue. Initially the nose shows fresh cherry and dried herbs. As the wine opens up in the glass we see blood plums and berries, synonymous with this wine. This easy drinking Sangiovese has it all; earthiness, spiced plums, cherries, chocolate and dried Italian herbs. The savoury finish is met with soft and well-balanced acidity You won’t find much Sangiovese of this quality, at this price.

Juicy lime, pink grapefruit, a mint/ aniseed top note, plus a little exotic spice. It's a fleshy wine of flavour and impact, and don't mind me, but slightly peanutty, with a Thai salad sort of thing happening, which I like. It's also chalky and quite complex and different in its delivery, with a nutty green mango finish of excellent length. I like this. Zesty. Interesting. Juicy. Alcohol: 12%. Closure: screwcap. Over 160 years of accumulated family experience is on full display here. A lifted nose showing citrus freshness, the palate continues with fresh citrus and concentrated grapefruit flavours. The palate is light to medium bodied with a perfect balance of fruit and soft acid. Delicious young you could easily polish this off on its own but it would be a great accompaniment for grilled fish. Will age well also.

Sourced from a single block of Light Pass mataro. Pure, ripe plum, blueberry and red forest-berry fruits held in the dust of exotic spice, liminal mataro garrigue and notes of roasting meats. Floral tones abound too. violets, frangipani and something vaguely musky that I can't put my finger on. Paringa Estate is a renowned pinot noir producer in the Mornington Peninsula. The fruit for Paringa Estate’s Peninsula pinot is sourced from vineyards around the peninsula. It is a highly expressive regional style with an emphasis on lively fruit. James Halliday remarked that “the quality of these wines are often equal to many other vineyards best”. The nose is bursting with lively red cherry aromas and spice. Whilst there is lots of red fruit on the palate, there is an appealing savoury tannin framework which gives structure and length. Great value.

Rich in heritage and tradition. Established in 1867 by Scottish immigrant John Riddoch, Katnook Estate is one of the oldest wineries with vineyards stretching across the famous terra rossa soil strip that runs through Coonawarra. Selected parcels were aged for 19 months in new and used French oak providing elegant spicy, cedar notes. Medium crimson in colour with red hues. This expressive cabernet sauvignon shows lovely evocative notes of briar, forest floor and Mediterranean herbs. There is a bright core of fruit aromatics such as mulberry and blueberry. The palate is full, supple with lovely flavours of plum, cassis, briar notes which give a lovely umami nuance. The tannins are supple and the finish is long.

Named after maker, Rob Gibson, who is not only a highly respected winemaker and viticulturist but a geologist. Fruit comes from both the Barossa and the Eden Valley, with time in American oak. A deep vibrant purple hue, the immediate impression is of generosity and attractive aromas; some vanillin oak is evident, but the dominant fragrances are cassis, mocha and blueberries. A supple and seductive texture with fine cushiony tannins and very good length. This is utterly delicious and should remain so for at least the next six to eight years. Closure: screwcap. Is there pinot which is a bigger trophy magnet than Bream Creek? Three trophies at both the National Cool Climate Wine Show and Sydney Royal Wine Show (Best Wine of Show, Best Red and Best Pinot Noir) speaks volumes. Why is it so special? Wine critic, Winsor Dobbin, puts it nicely saying "this is a classic cool-climate Tassie pinot without the price tag of some of its Apple Isle compadres. There is an aromatic nose of dark fruits and spices, which leads on to a palate alive with vibrant cherry, plum and berries flavours. This finishes long and has an impressive tannin structure which suggests cellaring potential. But why wait?"

One of Australia’s best pinot gris. An invigorating blend of what is clearly exceptional fruit sourced from vineyards across Tasmania (Derwent Valley, Relbia and Coal River Valley). A fine Hunter semillon that is as juicy and optimally ripe – despite its light weight and low alcohol - as it is pixelated, vibrant and intense because of it. Lanolin, lemon squash, tonic and galangal notes stream along chalky acid rails. The finish, pointed and immensely long. Destined for fine things with a decade of patience.
Chateau Tanunda is an icon of the Barossa with a history of winemaking extending for over 130 years. Hand-picked from select rows in their cool climate Eden Valley vineyard. Reserve Sparkling Shiraz 2012
Region: Great Western Rating: 98/100CC
Deep, youthful colour, dark blood-red with a faint trace of purple still hanging in after 11 years. A glorious bouquet of dried plum and cranberry, pepper/spice touches too, mellow and not 100% primary but also not showing much in the way of bottle-aged character. A glorious sparkling red, still in its early middleage. Finishes long and satisfying without too-obvious sweetness but with velvet-smooth tannins. A classic of its genre, drinking beautifully now but there is no hurry at all.

Pierro Chardonnay 2023
Region: Margaret River Rating: 98/100C
In the words of highly respected wine writer Jeremy Oliver ""Pierro Chardonnay is the role model for so many of Australia's more opulent and hedonistically proportioned chardonnays and is a stunning expression of Margaret River Chardonnay." Pierro has again served up a chardonnay of not only monumental power, but of simultaneously smooth and silky delivery. Intense with a rich, deep combination of nectarine, grapefruit, toasted cashews and fine spicy oak. Top shelf chardonnay and one of Pierro's finest.

Holm Oak the Wizard
Pinot Noir 2021
Region: Northern Tasmania Rating: 97/100CC
It's always exciting when a wine makes you stop and think. The Holm Oak The Wizard is the top of the range in the winery's portfolio of Pinot Noirs and it is easy to see why, making use of diversified clonal selection and 30% whole bunch. There's no shortage of interest on the nose, with deep and concentrated primary fruits vying for attention alongside compelling notes of decomposing leaves (or forest floor for the romantics out there), wild mushroom, damp earth, clove, churchy spice and incense, cedar and the lingering wisp of tobacco. The palate gives reason to pause. There is just so much going on here, and it's all delicious. Juicy, long and elegant ribbons of acidity keep the tension as tight as a Netflix cliff-hanger. Tannins have enough muscle to age well into a decade, and to hold the intensity of spice and fruit that is wrapped around its frame. At its core, this is a beautiful wine. It's clear on its intentions, yet it provides layers of complexity and detail while it takes you to its final destination, complete with a ferrous, savoury finish. A full orchestra of a wine. Bravo. Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon 2021
Region: Margaret River Rating: 97/100C
The Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon is always one of Margaret River's best and this latest release is no exception. From the sub-region of Wilyabrup, the blend is 95% Cabernet, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. Not the easiest vintage in the region, the team overcame any and all obstacles. Maturation was in 228 litre French oak barrels, 16% of which were new. Deep garnet, this is an immaculate and classic Margaret River Cabernet. Aromas weave through florals, cassis, soy, aniseed, black fruits, beef stock and graphite. An elegant style, with good energy, serious focus and an immaculate balance, as well as a lovely lingering finish which sees more chocolate and cherry notes emerging. With silky tannins and very good length, drink over the next ten to twenty years. Closure: screwcap. Drink: 2024-2044. Price: $174. Rating: 97/100
