Chardonnay 2023
Region: Margaret River Rating: 93/100
Wine critic Ken Gargett (Winepilot) puts it nicely "if someone is given a glass of a fine Margaret River Chardonnay, like this very one, and still claims to be a card-carrying member of the ABC club (anything but Chardonnay), then I simply won't believe them. How could anyone not love these wines?" Premium parcels of grapes were specially selected from a range of sites across the Margaret River region, from Karridale in the south through to Wilyabrup in the north. A gleaming pale yellow colour here. Lifted perfumes, quite aromatic and suggesting of coiled power. Stonefruits, nuts, melon, guava and peaches on the palate. The merest note of oak adds to the overall impression of a well-flavoured wine with fine and bright acidity running the length.

Shiraz 2022
Region: McLaren Vale Rating: 94/100C
Bob Oatley's mantra was that all wines should be a "darned good drink", and the Signature Series McLaren Vale shiraz is exactly that. A blend of selected parcels of Shiraz from the Blewitt Springs, Willunga, and McLaren Flats districts of the Vale. Winemaker, Larry Cherubino's, talents are on full show here. This is a progression of the traditional style of McLaren Vale shiraz to a more modern style with brighter fruit, less obvious alcohol and minimal reliance on oak. Soft, fleshy-textured Shiraz displaying blueberries and spice, supple tannins and stylish French oak influence. A very accessible, well loved style that has a following.

G-21 Grenache 2021
Region: McLaren Vale Rating: 94/100C
Grapes from the southern end of McLaren Vale. Is there a better area for Grenache? Maybe not. If you have yet to explore Grenache it is an unwooded red, similar in weight and body to a young Pinot Noir, Tempranillo or Sangiovese. Vibrant, perfumed grenache with classic raspberry, rose petals and fragrant notes with soft tannin. It should be enjoyed at least lightly chilled, which will allow its lifted aromatics and bright, breezy personality to shine. Perfect with some light pasta dishes. Consistently one of the best value grenache produced in Australia. Gold medal at the Sydney Royal Wine Show 2024 did not surprise.

Yabby Lake Tasmania Single Vineyard Chardonnay 2023
Region: Coal River Valley Rating: 96/100C
This is the first release of a Tasmanian Chardonnay by Yabby Lake. It’s not a one-off; from what I can tell, Mornington-based Yabby Lake has bought a vineyard in Tasmania’s Coal River Valley. This is a super start to proceedings. Texture, power, interest and length are all in excellent positions here. White peach, meal, nougat, preserved citrus and the most gentle murmurings of custard apple, honey, woodsmoke and cream. It has that extra spread, that extra something. This is just a bit exciting. Cool-climate Tasmanian chardonnay is so sought after but it is nearly always pricey. This is one of best selling Tassie chardonnays. No doubt due to it being superb value for money (as far as Tasmanian chardonnays go). Elegant and refined. The nose displays aromas of citrus fruit, apricot kernel and white peach with spicy integrated oak, whilst the palate has lovely textural richness as a result of malolactic fermentation extended time on lees, however it finishes with fine, minerally acidity. It is a lovely release.

Riversdale Estate
Riesling 2021
Region: Coal River Valley Rating: 95/100CC
Crisp, crunchy acidity is the byword here. It’s a cool climate signature that works hand in hand with lovely aromatics and a purity of citrus fruits. An apple and citrus blossom perfume fills the glass alongside green apple and lime zest. It’s an intense start to a wine moulded around a resounding lime and lemon acid tang and concentration of fruit. Injects grapefruit pith, green apple, lime zest, with a touch of ginger, kaffir lime leaf-like savouriness and a developing texture mid palate. Centaurus Pinot Noir 2021
Region: Coal River Valley Rating: 97/100C
A selection of the top plots and barrels from the Estate. There is distinction in this glass with macerated strawberries, raspberry coulis and pink peppercorn. A sway of blackberries and rosemary with a swirl of vanilla pods and coffee beans. Yes the wine is built for aging with a nod to the royal oak treatment and care of its fine line of acidity. Tannins are dusty and are quickly followed by succulence which can only come from grape tannins and perhaps a touch of whole bunches. HUNTER SEMILLON
Hunter Valley semillon is a wine that stands as a beacon of exceptional quality, incredible value, and extraordinary cellaring potential. Celebrated for its unique character and versatility, Hunter Valley semillon is a true gem in the landscape of fine wines.
It is renowned for its vibrant freshness and crisp acidity in its youth. These youthful wines are marked by bright citrus, green apple, and herbaceous notes, making them an absolutely delightful flavour experience. However, the true magic
is revealed with time.
As it ages, Hunter Valley Semillon undergoes a remarkable transformation. The fresh and zesty flavours evolve into rich, complex layers of honey, toasted nuts, and buttery nuances. The wine gains a luscious, almost creamy texture, while its colour slowly deepens to a golden hue. This metamorphosis showcases the wine’s extraordinary cellaring potential, making it a prized addition to any wine collection.

Zesty lemony aromas introduce a long, focused palate bursting with fresh citrus flavours. It is the perfect example of restrained power, with the core based on acidity. It is utterly gorgeous now, though it is poised for greatness with cellaring. Alcohol: 11.9%. Closure: screwcap. Date tasted: Feb 2024. Drink: 2024-2033. Price: $60. Rating: 98/100.

Tyrrell’s Stevens Vineyard Semillon 2018
Region: Hunter Valley Rating: 97/100CC
Stevens Semillon is a special wine at Tyrrell’s, which began making it in 1993 from a block owned by Neil and Bernadette Stevens. The wine inspired Bruce Tyrrell to develop a ‘single site’ range of wines. Tyrrell’s cemented this wine’s place within its portfolio by purchasing the block in 2022. The wine is in a sweet spot, with an expressive lemon curd aroma and a subtle smoky overlay. The palate exhibits the warmth of the vintage with delicious, subtle sweet pear and white peach flavours packed into a soft, cleansing palate. The wine is in its prime, with exceptional character and brightness. Closure: screwcap. Alcohol: 10.5%. Date tasted: Feb 2024. Price: $45. Rating: 96/100.

Tyrrell’s Vat 1 Semillon 2018
Region: Hunter Valley Rating: 98/100CC
At 6 years of age, the wine is beginning to bloom, displaying attractive ripe lemon, citrus curd and honeysuckle aromas. These characters are in the riper spectrum for this wine. The palate is on the generous side, but it still has the clarity and style one expects from Vat 1. There is no hiding the fact that ‘18 was a hot year. Consequently, this will be an earlier-drinking Vat 1, but no less enjoyable. That is the thing about iconic wines; the season may change, but their inherent qualities remain constant. Ready to drink on release. Alcohol: 12%. Closure: screwcap. Date tasted: Feb 2024. Drink: 2024-2030. Price: $115. Rating: 97/100.

MARGARET RIVER
Margaret River, a relatively young wine region, has quickly risen to international acclaim, particularly for its exceptional chardonnay and cabernet Sauvignon. Its maritime climate, influenced by the Indian Ocean, provides ideal conditions for producing wines of elegance, structure, and remarkable longevity.
While the region excels across a range of varieties, it’s the compelling combination of power and finesse found in its chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon that truly sets Margaret River apart. Many consider it Australia’s premier region for these two noble grapes, and for good reason.
Fermoy Semillon
Sauvignon Blanc 2023
Region: Margaret River Rating: 94/100C
Fermoy Estate is a premium winery nestled in the beautiful region of Wilyabrup, the ‘jewel in the crown’ of the famous wine making region of Margaret River. It was one of the original established vineyards of the region. Margaret River’s signature white blend is Semillon sauvignon blanc. A blend of 63% Semillon and 37% Sauvignon Blanc. Brilliant, pale straw with green highlights. Fresh fruit aromatics of guava, pear, lemon oil and lime leaf. A textured and balanced style showing subtle lifts of citrus blossom, grapefruit and lime zest, combined with body and mouthfeel garnered from partial fermentation and maturation on lees. Savoury notes of coastal herbs and fresh rocket add complexity while a punchy, saline acid line ensured a crisp, dry and refreshing finish.

Semillon Sauvignon
Blanc 2024
Region: Margaret River Rating: 95/100CC
I’ve enjoyed many examples of this wine over the years, and this wine from a warm, dry, early vintage is the best I can remember. It’s an SSB of great finesse, a slinky model that glides across the catwalk, never putting a foot wrong. All the goodies are in perfect balance, from fresh citrus and cut grass to subdued tropical notes, all arranged on a long line of the finest acidity. Some of the wine spent a couple of months in new French oak, adding polish an extra dimension. Will improve for several years but I doubt that you can keep your hands off it. Magic wine. Cullen Metricup Chardonnay 2024
Region: Margaret River Rating: 95/100C
A Chardonnay from Cullen! From a certified organic vineyard planted in 1998 in the Metricup sub-region of Margaret River. The seashell label pertains to the influence of the ocean in Margaret River wine growing and the simplicity and beauty of the natural world in Cullen’s biodynamic winemaking. It is completely different to Cullen’s flagship Kevin John in place and style. Made on the Chablis style using little oak and cool fermentations to retain the fruit. Floral with notes of white flowers, elderflower and concentrated fruit. There’s an abundance of bound ripe fruit, Anjou pear, yellow peaches, red apple skins and citrus curd. Fresh acidity and gentle phenolics envelope around the rich fruit core of the wine. Elegant Chardonnay.

Howard Park Margaret River Chardonnay 2023
Region: Margaret River Rating: 96/100CC
Sourced from the Allingham vineyard located in the cooler Karridale sub region. Here, the higher degree of cloud cover and prevailing southerly breezes facilitate a long, gentle ripening and the full evolution of flavour and fine structure that define the region’s finest chardonnay. Evocative aromas of white grapefruit, orange blossom and yellow nectarine. A luxurious texture unfurls across the palate, reminiscent of ripe stone fruit, counterbalanced by bright citrus and vibrant acidity. The elongated finish speaks to the persistence of flavour and quality of fruit at the core of this wine, and hints at the richness and complexity that will continue develop with time in bottle. Given the lofty prices of its Margaret River peers it makes excellent drinking.

An excellent deep purple hue with an ever-changing array of aromas: one minute spice, mulberries and cocoa when first poured, and next full of savoury notes of black olive tapenade, nori and menthol. Miles from Nowhere is the brainchild of veteran wine producer Franklin Tate. The Tate family were one of the founding families of the Margaret River region planting their first vines in 1973. The name is a dedication to the Tate family's patriarch that arrived in Australia from the Ukraine over 100 years ago (and felt every bit Miles From Nowhere). The wines are made by French born winemaker Frederique Perrin who spent 5 years as Technical Director of the famous Margaret River winery Cape Mentelle. The wines are a quality reflection of varietals and blends that the region does best. Best of all, compared to most other Margaret River wines they are so affordable and make excellent everyday drinking.

Miles From Nowhere
Sauvignon Blanc 2024
Region: Margaret River Rating: 91/100C
Margaret River is emerging as Australia's newest premier region to champion sauvignon blanc. It is a style that we prefer over many of the Marlborough sauvignon blancs being less herbaceous. Aromas of lemon and limes generating a unique freshness with tropical notes of passionfruit and honeydew melons. Vibrant and bright with juicy lemon, limes and passionfruit with hints of spice and mint. A fine balance is retained as the gentle citrus like acidity gives length and crispness to finish.

Its early days but recognition for this wonderful variety from the Margaret River is growing (and a wine like this would be a fitting flag bearer).

The Summer of Riesling
Australian riesling is a treasure in the world of wine, offering remarkable value for money without compromising on quality. This exceptional variety is celebrated for its vibrant flavours, exquisite balance, and its nod to the terroirs of many glorious Australian wine regions.
The versatility of riesling is showcased through its diverse growing regions, each bringing unique characteristics to the wine. From the cool-climate vineyards of Clare Valley, known for their intense lime and mineral notes, to the Eden Valley’s elegant and crisp expressions, Australian riesling captures the essence of its surroundings. Other
notable regions include Western Australia’s Great Southern, where the grape’s adaptability shines. Beyond its immediate appeal, many Australian rieslings boast impressive cellaring potential. These wines evolve beautifully over time, developing rich, layered profiles with enhanced complexity and depth. The natural acidity and structure of riesling make it a perfect candidate for aging, rewarding those who have the patience to allow it to mature in the cellar. Australian Riesling offers a delightful experience at every stage of its life.

The 2019 HRB Shiraz, with 4 GOLD MEDALS, clearly embodies this philosophy. McLaren Vale and Clare Valley richness provides a dark, intense fruit core, while the Pyrenees element contributes elegance and spice with savoury nuances, culminating in a shiraz of remarkable depth and balance.
Similarly, the 2019 HRB Cabernet Sauvignon showcases the power of regional synergy. Coonawarra's hallmark structure and blackcurrant notes are complemented by Margaret River's vibrant fruit and Frankland River's leafy complexity. The result is a cabernet sauvignon of exceptional finesse and aging potential.
"In my latest tastings of cabernet sauvignon ...and blends, the 2020 and 2019 Hardys HRB Cabernet Sauvignons shone like beacons. At AUD $35, they are outstanding bargains." Huon Hooke
A cancelled export order has provided Kemenys customers with an amazing opportunity on the 2019 vintage. The standard RRP of Hardy’s HRB is $35 a bottle. Our price is $30 (not too shabby at all) but… as a very special offer - if you buy 6 bottles will give you another 6 FREE! That equates to an incredible $15 per bottle!
Don’t delay, this will go nuts!
Please note that both the Hardy’s HRB Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon are in cork closures.

Hardys Heritage Reserve Bin Shiraz 2019 (cork)
Region: Multi regional Rating: 94/100CC
52/32/14/2% McLaren Vale/Frankland River/Pyrenees/ Clare Valley. This is taking the largesse of big company wine and its reach to a multitudinous degree of inter-regional blending. A balm of consistency and complexity in the Australian tradition. The result is full weighted and highly stylish, bridling warm-climate generosity with the herbal tannins, peppery freshness and aromatic lilt of somewhere cooler. The oak is all class, serving as a buffering framework to boysenberry, dried fruits, star anise, thyme and bramble. Alcohol: 14.3%. Date tasted: Feb 2022. Drink by: 2030. Price: $35. Rating: 93/100. RUINART
The origin of the House of Ruinart is unlike any other champagne house. It was the first established House of Champagne in 1729 and inspired by the intuition of a monk well ahead of his time. Dom Thierry Ruinart was an intuitive, visionary, hardworking, and modest Benedictine monk who lived from 1657-1709. A brilliant theologian and historian, at the age of 23 he left his home in Champagne to go to the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, one of the most influential centres of learning near Paris. While there, he was exposed to the city and court where he gained an awareness of a more worldly life. Specifically, he learned of a new “wine with bubbles,” not yet known as champagne, which was already popular among young aristocrats. On September 1st 1729, in Reims, at the heart of the Champagne region, Nicolas Ruinart drafted the founding charter of Maison Ruinart, creating the world's first ever champagne-producing company. This gave rise to an enterprise that continues to flourish and to prosper nearly three hundred years later. The intuition of his uncle, the monk who had first shown him the way, had thus inspired an initiative that was to make history.

Champagne
Champagne is, undoubtedly, the most famous wine in the world, typically made using three main grape varieties, usually a blend of chardonnay, pinot noir, and pinot meunier. Champagne is the perfect wine for any celebration, and nothing else says “celebration” more than a bottle of ‘champers’. The flavors, intensity, and styles vary depending on the producers and their secret in-house production practices.
Charles Heidsieck Brut
Reserve NV (Gift boxed)
Region: Champagne Rating: 97/100CC
The thrilling energy of this splendid season charges it with a vibrancy and definition that places this blend on a plateau elevated high above even the lofty heights that this cuvee has attained under the new Charles Heidsieck. In searching for any other entry non-vintage cuvee to which to compare it, I can fathom none short of the mesospheric heights of Krug itself. In sheer age (current Krug Grande Cuvee is only one year older) and depth of reserves, this Charles Heidsieck splendidly upholds its elevated position among Champagne's richer NVs... In sheer, breathtaking calibre for the price, this is the greatest Charles Heidsieck Brut Reserve I can remember. It deserves to be the house champagne we all have chilled perpetually at the ready this year. Rating: 96/100.

Ruinart is the oldest established house producing champagne since 1729. The Blanc de Blancs is crafted from 100% Premier Cru chardonnay vineyards. Champagne expert Tyson Stelzer says that "vivacity, elegance and enticing appeal unite in this fresh, young blend that exemplifies the exciting mood of Ruinart. Montagne de Reims chardonnay is strategically deployed to provide body and mid-palate fleshiness, without diminishing the line and mineral structure of the Cote des Blancs". It is an outstanding blanc de blancs champagne.

Special Cuvee Brut NV

Benchmark Bollinger, fresh and vivacious, yet wonderfully resonant with all the depth and triumphant complexity that set Special Cuvee apart. A universe of complexity spans light years of black cherries, plums, fresh lemon zest, red apple, even the richness of ripe peach and fig. Deep reserves allow primary fruit to speak articulately, reverberating softly with Bollinger's signature notes of ginger, dried nectarine, mixed spice, toast, brioche, honey and roast nuts. For all this, it upholds achingly pristine citrus zest freshness throughout, riding on a vibrant acid line, culminating in a masterful crescendo of fine, frothing, salt and iodine-infused minerality. Black cherry fruit lingers long and profound. One of the finest entry NVs on the planet. Rating: 95/100.

The colour is a rich crystalline gold hue reflecting the 100% Pinot Noir. The nose opens up with notes of fig, prune and pineapple. On tasting, the wine is rich, fleshy and velvety. It is beautifully vivacious as well as vinous. It combines fruity roundness with minerality, leaving a hint of sea salt. Its taste is remarkably long and its freshness stupefying for a blanc de noirs. This rich and elegant Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru ideally complements a cocktail party or a gastronomic meal. Impenetrable core to a deeply-stained ruby-red rim. Mulberry, ironstone and dark chocolate aromatics. Rich dense and weighty, a powerhouse shiraz that’s loaded with dark berry fruit and layered complexity of savoury graphite and mocha notes. Tannins are powerful but wrapped in velvet, so the palate glides with great persistence to the drying finish. Many years of enjoyment will be found here and whilst not cheap it offers great value. Chardonnay 2023 (375ml)
Region: Adelaide Hills Rating: 95/100C
In case you were not aware you are drinking some of the first grapes picked from the S+S high density planting of the Piccadilly vineyard. Lemon verbena, grapefruit and wet concrete. Celery stem, fresh ginger and printer paper. Peach cheeks and almond nougat. A wash of electrifying acidity, coconut jelly creaminess and finishing with a sake like leesy quality. This is intense in flavour as we have come to expect from the M3 perhaps with more savoury shapes than previous years. It’s compact and muscular but with nice elongated lines of acidity and freshness of citrus fruit. For a chilly vintage this is showing very well now and will cellar up to 5 years. Claymore Voodoo Child Chardonnay 2024
Region: Clare Valley Rating: 92/100
Unfortunately Claymore’s ancient Chardy vines at Watervale got slammed by a black frost on October 2023. However, its good to have mates and Claymore has turned to grower friends for this small batch 2024 Chardonnay. Using their gnarly Chardy fruit they have crafted a generous, full flavoured Chardonnay awash with peach, dew-melon and subtle French oak spice. Partial malolactic adds texture and a morish softness in the mouth, this is wine for food. Think good old roast chook, butter slathered under the skin, stu ed with apricots, walnuts and herbs.

Will improve for several years but I doubt that you can keep your hands o it. Magic wine. Back up the ute. Closure: screwcap. Price: $25. Ratig: 96/100.

The Courser Grenache 2022

Two vineyards go into this wine, a 100-year-old vineyard in Light Pass and a 120-year-old vineyard in Marananga. The 2022 The Courser Grenache saw 50% to 60% whole bunches in the wild ferment. It had a slow basket press, only gentle rack and returns and no pumpers, etc. On the nose, this is spicy and exotic, with orange peel, pomegranate, pink peppercorns and green olive tapenade. In the mouth, this is all about tobacco, rose petals and brine. It is elegant and full. This looks like a Barossa wine, but it does it with restraint and length. This is really good. Really! Wonderful. Rating: 96/100.

Solid and bold Barossa cabernet, packed with blackcurrants and cassis, met in full force by dense, dark chocolate oak. It holds itself with composure, thanks to a rigid mesh of impressively fine-grained tannins and well-pitched acidity, maintaining confidence and assurance through a long finish. Unashamedly Barossan yet unmistakably cabernet. Patience. Alcohol: 14.5%. Closure: screwcap. Date tasted: Feb 2021. Drink: 2038. Price: $85. This is sourced from the excellent Mount Barrow vineyard in Mount Barker. It’s the pinot that gets you into the journey, but it is a whole lot more than an entry level. The colour is quite light but vibrant and brilliant. The nose is intense with a whack of plum and cherry. On the palate the vibrant primary fruit is underpinned by a slightly charry mushroom-like character. Spices, cloves and a lift of sour cherry completes a mighty impressive wine. Closure: screwcap. Price: $49. Rating: 95/100.

Holm Oak Chardonnay 2024
Region: Tasmania Rating: 95/100
Cool-climate Tasmanian chardonnay is so sought after but it is nearly always pricey. This is one of best selling Tassie chardonnays. No doubt due to it being superb value for money (as far as Tasmanian chardonnays go). Elegant and refined. The nose displays aromas of citrus fruit, apricot kernel and white peach with spicy integrated oak, whilst the palate has lovely textural richness as a result of malolactic fermentation extended time on lees, however it finishes with fine, minerally acidity. It is a lovely release.

Australian grenache has experienced a remarkable rise in popularity, especially in the regions of McLaren Vale and Barossa. “Why”, you ask. Firstly, winemakers in these regions have focused on showcasing the exceptional potential of old-vine grenache, resulting in wines of depth, complexity, and elegance. The warmer climate and ancient soils of McLaren Vale and Barossa provide ideal conditions for grenache to thrive, producing wines with rich, ripe fruit flavors, supple tannins, and a distinct spiciness.
Grenache has recently been dubbed the "New Pinot" due to its versatility and approachability. It offers a lighter alternative to fuller-bodied reds like shiraz, making it more accessible to a broader range of red wine lovers. Grenache's ability to exhibit both finesse and intensity, along with its food-friendly nature, has captured the attention of enthusiasts seeking a new and exciting red wine experience. As a result, Australian Grenache has garnered a loyal following and is now recognized as a standout varietal in its own right.

Thistledown Gorgeous Grenache 2022
Region: Barossa Valley Rating: 93/100C
Grenache is such a great grape variety and Thistledown are slightly obsessed with it (being a Grenache specialist). Sourced from several Grenache vineyards across South Australia, including some of the region's most iconic sites, Gorgeous Grenache displays a beautifully perfumed nose with hints of violets and wild strawberry. The palate is succulent, juicy and Pinot-like in its profile while the finish is savoury and moreish (even gorgeous).

Cirillo the Vincent Grenache 2023
Region: Barossa Valley Rating: 94/100C
The Cirillo family moved to the small district of Light Pass in the early 1970's. Vincent Cirillo became the custodian of some exceptional vineyards that were planted in 1848. Today these vines are documented to be the oldest surviving and producing grenache parcels in the world. The Vincent is a tribute to the founder produced from two 100+ (1901 and 1906) year old vineyards from the renowned Barossa Valley. The Vincent offers inviting aromas of rich fruit and white pepper. The palate is generous with intense true varietal characteristics. It's delicately rounded and generous. A superb Grenache that has a lingering finish. A wine that can be enjoyed now, or well into the future.
