COAL HANDLING ROUND-UP E-Crane undertakes a number of projects in Indonesia
W
ith more than 30 yr of experience in manufacturing balance cranes, E-Crane has reached a market‑leading position in the industry. The company is a proven and trusted solution in the coal handling industry and has been
the ideal solution at many ports and terminals for barge loading and unloading, shiploading and unloading and stockpiling. While each project is different, the modular and flexible design of the E-Crane makes it ideal for any coal handling operation. Recently, companies in
Indonesia have been realising these benefits, with two E-Cranes already commissioned and two more to be installed later this year.
PT Vale
A 1500 Series/Model 9317B+ CR-D E-Crane has been installed and commissioned at PT Vale as a part of a port expansion project on the island of Sulawesi (Soroako). It is crawler mounted and unloads coal from vessels into a stockpile with an 8 m3 hydraulic clamshell bucket. The E-Crane has a maximum outreach of 31.7 m and a maximum duty cycle capacity of 15 t.
PT Holcim Tuban
PT Holcim Tuban has also already realised the benefits of E-Crane, with a 1500 Series/Model 9382B GA-E installed in 2012 for handling coal and gypsum. PT Holcim is located on the island of Java. The rail‑mounted E-Crane was installed as a part of a greenfield project to unload material from barges up to 15 000 DWT. It has a maximum outreach of 38.2 m and a maximum duty cycle capacity of 12 t. A 1500 Series/9317B+CR-D E-Crane a PT Vale in Sulawasi, Indonesia. Table 1. Project data – PT Vale Type

Bayan
A 2000 Series/Model 18264 PD-E E-Crane is currently en route to Indonesia to be installed and commissioned later this year. Bayan currently unloads coal using two ship’s cranes. They were looking to replace these cranes because of their high maintenance costs, low reliability and low hourly capacity. Both cranes will be replaced with a single E-Crane, with an outreach of 26.4 m and 24.0 t duty cycle capacity.
PT Semeru Surya Semen Also en route to Indonesia is a 1500 Series/Model 9317B+ PD-E E-Crane for PT Semeru Surya Semen, a greenfield cement plant near Balikpapan on the island of Kalimantan. The E-Crane has a maximum outreach of 31.7 m and a maximum duty cycle capacity of 15 t and is used for unloading cement

"E" for equilibrium
The ”E“ in E-Crane stands for equilibrium. The E-Crane design is
based on an parallelogram‑style boom that provides a direct mechanical connection between the counterweight and the load. This mechanism system ensures that the E-Crane remains balanced

throughout its working range. Compared to conventional cranes, which require as much as 80% of their available energy just to move the boom, stick and grab, the E-Crane uses gravity to do the work instead, reducing horsepower requirements and power consumption by up to 50%, as well as significantly reducing maintenance and operating costs. E-Cranes provide longer outreach ranges than typical material handlers, from 24.8 – 47.8 m (82 – 157 ft). This outreach allows for unloading any type of barge or ship with minimum cleanup. E-Crane duty cycle capacity ranges from 5 – 50 t (5.5 – 55 short t). Although E-Cranes are compatible with any type of grab, the company’s clamshell buckets are designed with a powerful closing force affording maximum fill and eliminating spills and carry-back. E-Crane cabs are equipped with a state-of-the-art control system for easy machine operation, which builds operator confidence, reduces, cycle times and maximises productivity.
Liebherr launches new flagship mobile harbour crane
L
iebherr Maritime Cranes has introduced its new flagship mobile harbour crane to the market: the LHM 800. According to the company, this new model is the mobile solution for ever-growing vessel sizes and heavy industrial goods, taking container, bulk and general cargo handling to the next level. “The LHM 800 is a breakthrough for the mobile harbour crane sector, outperforming the existing maximum lifting capacity by nearly 50%,” said Matthias Mungenast, Sales Director for Liebherr Mobile Harbour Cranes. “Also, in terms of container and bulk handling, the LHM 800 is the new benchmark. We are optimistic that this new model will strengthen our market leading position.” Like the complete Liebherr mobile harbour crane (LHM) range, the LHM 800 relies on the x-shaped undercarriage, which offers stability

and operational safety. The wheel sets have been slightly adapted to ensure optimum load distribution of this new giant, which weighs approximately 745 t. Thanks to its rubber-tyred undercarriage, the crane is mobile and can be moved to where it is needed most. Due to the modular LHM concept, customers may alternatively opt for a space-saving rail-mounted portal, a fixed pedestal or a barge‑mounted solution. In addition to the undercarriage, the LHM design ensures that the LHM 800 is a valuable addition to the portfolio.
Lifting capacity of 308 t
The new crane model provides a lifting capacity of 308 t, exceeding the maximum capacity of the existing strongest mobile harbour crane, the LHM 600, by not less than 100 t. This additional capacity opens up new fields of application for mobile harbour
cranes. As industrial goods are getting bigger and heavier, the new crane is a forward-looking solution for ports worldwide. In addition to single lifts, the new LHM 800 is also designed for tandem lifts. With Liebherr’s tandem operation tool Sycratronic® activated, synchronised movement is guaranteed and one crane driver can simultaneously operate both cranes for improved speed, capacity and safety. In tandem operation with a second LHM 800, the maximum lifting capacity is 616 t.
Bulk handling capacity
Equipped with Pactronic® hybrid drive, the LHM 800 can handle up to 2300 tph of bulk material. The new crane can also be fitted with SmartGrip®, Liebherr’s self-learning technology for optimised grab filling rates, which was introduced to the market in 2014.
