Programme and other Information
Visa students
Students who need to apply for a visa are requested to book early to allow plenty of time for the visa application process. For information, please visit our website: www.francesking.com/school-of-englishdublin/more-information/visa-guidance
Online test before arrival
We strongly recommend that students take our online test before arrival, to save time on their first day. Students can take the test on our website at: https://test.francesking.com or on arrival at school. On their first day, students will also have a speaking/ listening assessment with a senior teacher.
First day of the programme
Students should arrive at the following times: 08:00 for programmes starting at 09:00; 11:30 for programmes starting at 13:00. Most programmes start on a Monday (or Tuesday, when Monday is a public holiday) and finish on a Friday. On the first day students may miss one or more session because of the time needed to administer the level assessment test, complete registration and travel to their Frances King School. During the busy summer period, students may be invited to come to the school and register on the Sunday afternoon before their first day. Arrival instructions will be sent with each confirmation and students must be given this information to avoid misunderstandings.
Programme location and time
Frances King cannot guarantee a particular programme, timetable or Frances King School until students have completed the level test at the school, however every attempt will be made to place students in their preferred programme. The school reserves the
right to change course programmes and locations without prior notice, in the event of unforeseen circumstances beyond our control or if in the best interests of the school. London: Our main year-round schools are in Kensington (Gloucester Road underground station). In addition, we have a summer school in Belgravia (Victoria underground station) for children taking our Family Programme in summer, and other courses depending on classroom availability. The Family Programme in winter, spring and autumn will take place in our Kensington School. Dublin: Our main year-round school is located at 26 Merrion Square in central Dublin, and we also use a school in Dalkey (located on the coast 30 minutes south east of Dublin) for our summer Teenager homestay programme.
Programme entry levels
Certain programmes require a minimum level. Partners must check the brochure. In the event that a student’s English is not the correct level, it may be necessary to offer an alternative programme. If no suitable programme is available, the school will offer a refund either to the student directly (with the Partner’s agreement) or credit the Partner’s account with Frances King.
Minimum age
The minimum age at Frances King is 16 years except: Club 10 Courses (C25/C30), Family Adult Course (FA), English for Work Skills and Topics: 21 years Internship Programmes: 18 years Teenager Programmes (LTR / DTH): 13 years Family Junior Programmes (FJ): 7 years. In London, we also accept children aged 6 from July 11– August 5.
Passport / ID card
All students are required to present their original passport / ID card on the first day and cannot start classes without this. The school will retain a copy.
Next of kin and student contact details Students must provide contact details of their next of kin. Students must also provide their contact details in London or Dublin including address, email and mobile telephone details, and update us if anything changes
Changes to bookings
Any changes to bookings must be made in writing.
Attendance
The school is required to report to immigration authorities any non-EU students who: a. Do not arrive to start their course b. Are absent for 10 consecutive days c. Attend for less than 80% of possible days Students may also be refused healthcare if they do not meet the conditions of their Visa.
Programme materials
Programme materials are included in the tuition fee for most of our programmes including the Academic Year Programme. For all other Examination Preparation Courses (FCE, CAE & IELTS), students must buy a course book as directed by their teachers: Cambridge: £25/€30; IELTS: £28/€30 (prices correct September 2015).
Progress Meetings
From time to time, students will have a short 5 minute meeting with their teacher. About 20-30 minutes per week of class time will be used for personal meetings, while the class carries on with work set by the teacher.
Problems
Students experiencing any problems during their stay should speak to Client Services so that any difficulty may be resolved quickly, while the student is studying at the school. It is very difficult to deal with complaints after students have finished their course.
Office hours and emergencies
Frances King offices are open between 08:30 and 18:00 Monday - Friday. In the event of an emergency outside of these times, agents and students should call our Emergency mobile number on +44 (0)7768 325 391 (London) or +353 (0)83 450 2204 (Dublin). Please note that this is for emergencies only.
Public and School Holidays in 2016
London: January 1; March 25, 28; May 2, 30; August 29. Dublin: January 1; March 17, 25, 28; May 2; June 6; August 1; October 31. When Monday is a public holiday, all courses start on the following Tuesday. Evening classes (in London) will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. One-to-One lessons will be scheduled
on different days by agreement with the school. There is no reduction in fees or compensation for missed sessions where a programme includes a public holiday.
Student Personal Holiday allowance
If students book a programme of more than 12 weeks, they may take a holiday of 2 weeks every 12 weeks without losing the course fee for this period, providing that one week’s notice is given to Client Services staff. Holidays may not be taken within the first 8 weeks of the course or during an examination preparation course. If students book a programme of 12 weeks or more and need a visa to enter the country and wish to take a holiday either during or after their stay, they should request extra weeks when they apply for their visa.
Academic Career Programmes Students need to plan their holidays in advance – students will not pay for holiday time. Students can take holidays as follows: 24, 25 (Dublin only) and 28 week programmes: 4 weeks’ holiday; 36 and 42 week programmes: 6 weeks’ holiday; There is an extra 2 weeks’ holiday for those present from December 19, 2016 - January 3, 2017.

London: students can purchase a Travel Card (Oyster) from underground stations which allows unlimited travel on buses and the underground in specific zones in London. A weekly Travel Card (Oyster) costs £31.40 per week (2015) for unlimited travel in Zones 1 & 2 (£36.80 zones 1-3). Students studying for more than 14 weeks and more than 15 lessons / week can apply for a student discount card which gives them 30% discount off the cost of travel in London. Dublin: students can buy a Travel Card in central Dublin for travel on buses.
Meals and living expenses
Students need to be given a realistic idea of the cost of living in London or Dublin. Meals can cost £5-20 (London) or €5-15 (Dublin) per person. Students who have half board accommodation should be advised to allow at least £90.00 (London) or €80.00 (Dublin) per week extra spending money, and those on a Bed & Breakfast and self-catering basis should allow more to cover the cost of meals. If you would like more information on living costs please contact us. Frances King School of English

To book accommodation
Accommodation
There is a Facilities Fee: one payment: £70 (London) or €70 (Dublin) per person or £120 (London) or €120 (Dublin) per family, per apartment or per 2 people booking a twin room.
Staying with a Homestay is
The best way for students to develop their conversational English skills and immerse themselves in the life and culture of London and Dublin The most cost-effective accommodation, with friendly hosts, home cooking, pleasant conversation and comfortable surroundings
Frances King homestay hosts…
Welcome students and make them feel at home Explain the best way to travel to the school and help the student to buy a travel card Respect the student’s cultural background Encourage the student to always speak English Provide a clean and comfortable room with a desk for private study Clean the room and provide a regular change of bed linen Do some of the student’s laundry or allow use of their laundry facilities Provide a balanced diet if students choose to take meals Provide students with their own house key
Homestay Selection
Choosing the right type of accommodation in London and Dublin, where students feel happy and comfortable, is very important and we have carefully selected a variety of accommodation to meet individual needs. Your students can choose from: Homestays Residences Studios and apartments Flatshares Hotels 30
Frances King School of English
We take great care in selecting our homestays and visit each host before placing students. We regularly re-visit our hosts and develop close relationships with them which helps us to match students with suitable hosts. We check all feedback to ensure high standards. All of our homestays have a clean and comfortable home and speak English to native English standard. Our hosts have a genuine desire to welcome students into their homes and their lives. A homestay does not always consist of two parents with children; people like this are often too busy to look after a student in addition to their own children. A single person, or a couple whose children are away at school or grown up, often make excellent ‘hosts’ with time to devote to our students. Students should not expect their English homestay to be the same as their own home.
In London, some homestay providers may not be of English origin but all speak English to native speaker standard. The UK has a rich history and is very proud of its cultural diversity. Our London homestay providers are a reflection of our society and may come from different backgrounds, age groups and socioeconomic groups. Dublin is not as large or cosmopolitan as London and homestay providers are usually less culturally diverse. We do our best to match students with the right hosts so it is important to book early and tell us about students’ special requirements.

Informing homestays of arrival time
Students must either write to, email, or telephone their homestay at least one week before arrival. If students do not contact their homestay, they may not be at home to greet them. Some homestays will not accept a student if they do not inform them of their arrival time.
Arrival times
It is not always possible to arrive at host accommodation before 07:00 or after 22:00. Please check with us.
Living in a Homestay
When staying in a homestay, students should try to fit in with the everyday life of the household and remember that they are not staying in a hotel. Students are expected to keep their room tidy and to show consideration towards their host and respect meal times. If students will not be at home for dinner or are staying out in the evening later than normal, it is important that they inform their host.
Special requests
We will do our very best to deal with students’ special requests but are not able to guarantee this. It takes more time to deal with special requests, so early booking is appreciated and avoids disappointment.
Holidays
Students wishing to leave luggage at their homestay while they take a holiday must pay a retainer fee of £50 per week (London) or €50 per week (Dublin). In all other types of accommodation, students will be charged the full weekly rate during the holiday period and may leave their luggage in the room. Frances King School of English

Laundry
Homestays will generally do 1 load of washing for their students per week and/ or allow use of their washing machine. Arrangements may vary depending on the homestay.

In Dublin, accommodation is located in Dublin 2, Dublin 4, Dublin 6, Dublin 6W and some parts of South & County Dublin with a maximum travel time of up to 40 minutes to the school.

Please advise the school in advance of any special dietary needs such as gluten or lactose intolerance, as it may be necessary to pay a supplement of £30 (London) or €30 (Dublin) per week to cover the extra cost of specialist grocery items.
Pets
Many UK and Irish hosts have pets. Please inform us if students have a strong dislike or an allergy to animals (either cats or dogs).

obtaining their visa, you must inform the school and we will arrange the accommodation. Due to the last minute nature of some bookings, students who book in this way may find that their first choice of accommodation is not available and may have to accept an alternative at a different price. Partners must inform students of our cancellation terms prior to making a booking. Receipt of a booking is acceptance of our Terms and Conditions 2016. TIER 4 GENERAL STUDENT VISA (GSV) - UK Students applying for a Tier 4 visa need us to issue a Certificate of Acceptance to Study (CAS). We require payment in full including CAS fee of £21 before issuing a CAS. The CAS Confirmation letter shows that a course of a certain duration and number of hours has been reserved, and full fees paid. It is extremely important that students understand that this document is binding. The details stated on the CAS must be correct and the students must follow the course and accommodation that has been confirmed. It is the school’s duty to inform the UKBA of any alteration to a booking (prior to or after arrival) and of any cancellation or curtailment. It is therefore very important that students are carefully checked to ensure that they are bona fide students. Please check that the school is able to issue a CAS before registering a student who requires a Tier 4 visa. Points to Cover in Assessing Tier 4 Students This is a list of the points that a Frances King partner MUST cover to give themselves reasonable assurance that the person applying for a Tier 4 visa to enrol on a course is a genuine and credible student. Identity Identity and eligibility - is there proof of identity (passport/ID card/birth certificate) which can be verified or looks genuine? Is there any reason to question eligibility for the course on e.g. age grounds? Educational evidence Does the applicant have a SELT (Secure English Language Test) such as IELTS / Cambridge to prove they have at least CEFR B2 level? Has the applicant been interviewed (how and by whom) and what decision was reached on eligibility/acceptability overall? Are there any negative factors (e.g. failure to complete a course, long interruptions to study, poor grades)? What are the applicant’s key aims in taking the course? Is there a career or further study plan that seems reasonable? Has the applicant considered the implications of studying in a different country, culture and language? Do they think it will be manageable – e.g. based on the experience of a brother or friend? Personal and family background Has the applicant (or family members) travelled abroad regularly or at all? Has the applicant got good family reasons for returning home at the end of the course (e.g. partner and children)? Financial and employment background Has the applicant made a rough estimate of the costs of the course and living expenses, and is this reasonably accurate and meets the Immigration rules/requirements on fees and maintenance?
How do they propose to pay for the course and their living costs? What evidence can they provide that they can pay? What is their general family/economic background? How do they think the course will benefit them financially – is their expectation of a return realistic in relation to the total costs? Is the applicant aware that they are not permitted to work or bring dependants to the UK on a Tier 4 General Student visa? Are they willing to pay full fees in advance before a CAS is issued? If the applicant is/has been working, what is their employment history and does the course fit with their career aims? Does the applicant have, or have reasonable expectations of getting, sponsorship from their government or another reputable body (e.g. an international charity or corporation which is or may become their employer)? Is there evidence e.g. from their employer that the course is seen as being beneficial to their career prospects and that their job will be held open for when they return? Immigration background Has the applicant travelled abroad before and complied with any visa terms? Is there any evidence of e.g. a previous visa refusal in their passport? If so, what reason were they given for the refusal? Have other close members of their family travelled abroad before at all or regularly, or studied abroad successfully? Medical conditions - does the applicant have any pre-existing medical condition (including pregnancy) or disability which would make it more difficult for them to study effectively, or which would require special provision by our institution?
