“The contribution that students make to the local and wider communities is outstanding and reflects the school’s rich curriculum and specialist status” OFSTED What do parents and students want from an outstanding secondary school education? In my experience, parents want their daughters and sons to be taught an engaging curriculum at a level suited to their needs, with high expectations in a safe and caring environment. Hatch End High is a school where academic excellence is paralleled by a commitment to develop the personality, talents and abilities of all its students. We uphold and develop traditional values whilst embracing new and stimulating innovative practice. As a thriving, forward looking school with ‘high performing dual specialist’ Academy status, we provide outstanding quality, all round education for young people aged 11 - 18. Students are stretched to achieve their maximum potential. Public examination results are well above the national average and the school enjoys exceptional success in many other areas such as music, the arts and sport. Hatch End High has created a purposeful and effective learning environment, rich in opportunities for personal fulfilment and success. There is, however, something else we do which is really special; our school is underpinned by a strong ethos of mutual co-operation and respect which creates an environment where students and staff work together in harmony and learn from each other. We want our young people to become responsible citizens who care about others and not just themselves. As prospective parents, you’re very welcome to visit us, see this for yourself and find out more about Hatch End High School.

An Outstanding Curriculum We offer a broad and balanced but ambitious and personalised curriculum which ensures all students acquire the basic skills of literacy, numeracy and IT as well as the equally important social and interpersonal skills such as co-operation, independence and resilience. Our curriculum goes far beyond the classroom and we offer an extensive programme of enrichment, extension and support. At Hatch End High School we aim to challenge and motivate all students and we place great emphasis on supporting each individual child both personally and academically as they progress throughout their school life. All students In Years 7, 8 and 9 follow the National Curriculum subjects with individualised support where needed. Students commence GCSEs both at the beginning of Year 9 and 10 and are guided onto an outstanding variety of individual pathways on offer. These pathways are carefully constructed to allow both choice and flexibility in which traditional academic subjects such as Triple Science, Modern Foreign Languages and Humanities can be studied alongside more Applied courses. In Years 12 and 13, our flexible and student-centred curriculum enables students to choose from a multitude of ‘A’ Level subjects and BTEC Nationals, not only here at Hatch End, but also through the highly successful Harrow Sixth Form Collegiate. Our Sixth Form is housed in a brand new, state of the art, centre and sixth formers benefit from first class teaching and learning as well as extra-curricular activities.

In all years students are taught in good sized classes and additional support is provided for students with specific learning and language needs. Homework is a vital part of their learning and considerable emphasis is placed on helping students take responsibility for their own achievement and personal development. Students will be given a Link Book in which to record their homework on a daily basis and parents are expected to sign this on a weekly basis.
Supporting the Individual We recognise that everyone needs to be personally challenged throughout their school life and we place great emphasis on tracking individual student progress with half termly assesments. In addition to the normal parents evenings, we also offer academic monitoring interviews with students and parents to talk through continued strategies for improvement. For the gifted and/or talented child, a programme of extension and enrichment opportunities takes place to challenge and stretch in new and imaginative ways, including the delivery of the Latin Curriculum. In the classroom, all lessons are differentiated to enable high performers to achieve their very best. Our Raising Aspirations programme complements and energises our ‘Ambition’ value in we CARE by providing high quality enrichment activities for all students.
“Students are capable of achieving the highest academic standards, and those with learning difficulties and/or disabilities are equally well supported.”
When a student is identified as having a particular learning need, our large and very experienced Special Educational Needs team develop a wide variety of support and interventions to support the individual and allow them to have equal access to the curriculum.
Deaf Resource Base Hatch End High School is the London Borough of Harrow’s additionally resourced secondary school for deaf students. The specialist unit provides an environment where the needs of all deaf students are understood and valued, and successful inclusion is promoted. The aim is to provide the opportunity for access to the widest possible range of educational experience, so that they achieve their potential, not only educationally, but also socially and emotionally.

Pastoral Care – A Sense of Belonging Hatch End High School takes great care to make sure that every student is valued, secure and successful. Induction We want to make students feel welcome and at home from their very first day. We have established very close links with many local schools to ensure that all information necessary for a smooth transition takes place. As part of the Pan London Admissions process we appreciate that sometimes students may come from other schools and every effort is made to reduce anxieties about transferring from Primary to Secondary. We have a dedicated Year 7 team of staff who specialise in induction and plan a sensitive and successful programme. Students and their parents are invited to visit the school and meet their form tutor and Head of Year before they start in September. We hold a formal transition day in the summer and also offer a one to one interview with Senior Staff to address any concerns. The new cohort starts school in advance and has the chance to get used to the new routines before the rest of the school joins them
Continuity and security Tutors progress through the school with their students wherever possible to provide continuity and the opportunity to establish a good long term relationship of trust and support. To help encourage a community spirit in each year group, enrichment activities, clubs and assemblies take place.

They regularly represent the school on a local, national and international level. Hatch End High School is committed to ensuring all students and staff feel safe and recognise that all students have the right to study and work in conditions which are free from undue anxiety, stress and fear. We are strongly committed to running buddy and peer support systems and strive to support all members of our community through a range of systems, clubs and events. We CARE. With strong tradition of community cohesion Hatch End High School aims to make all students aware of both their school and the wider community, actively promoting involvement through both the curriculum and a range of events and activities. Sixth Form The Sixth form at Hatch End High School is housed in a state of the art centre and offers access to more than 40 subjects at AS/A2 Level as well as an extensive suite of applied learning opportunities. Our sixth form students are performing to a very high standard and are vastly exceeding the national average with their results. We value and encourage the independent learning skills that Universities and employers demand. The pastoral strengths of the school extend into the Sixth form with each student spending over two hours a week with their personal tutor. The Sixth form team operate an ‘open door’ policy and adopt a ‘can do’ approach to problems and concerns. Sixth form students are able to take part in all of the extra-curricular activities available lower down the school and also benefit from additional enrichments that are exclusive to the Sixth form. As the leaders of our student body, Sixth form students are involved in community service including the establishment and organisation of clubs, societies and trips and this is of enormous credit to them as they apply to Universities and enter their careers. 20% of our leavers in 2011 went to Russell Group Universities including Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, UCL, and Imperial
