A Note from the Publisher » Being immersed daily in the world of weddings, it’s natural that I tend to notice new trends from time to time. But, as of late, I’ve stumbled upon what I consider a somewhat surprising one. The planning process seems to be stretching out a little further, granting couples a longer engagement period. With so many options, and with weddings becoming such big business, one might assume that they could turn a wedding around on a dime. And with the level of professional talent running amok around KC, there’s no doubt it can be done. But, I must admit, there is something rather soothing about this inadvertent “holding pattern.”

Christie Scott Publisher

For one, it allows you to savor a particular period in your courtship. It’s like you date for a while before you enter this relationship purgatory of sorts, planning and waiting to officially be wed. And so often couples are so consumed with getting to the end goal, that they skim past the all the excitement of this part. The hoping, the dreaming of what the future holds, as you map out options with an overabundance of optimism. Then, there are the options. Of course giving yourself more time helps both you and your professionals better plan for your festivities. You have more choice of venues, more photographers are likely to be open, and the list goes on. Now, going through this process myself, right alongside you all, hindsight somehow seems abundantly clear. And looking back, what I wish more couples would realize is that there really is no rush to book every one of your vendors the first month you’re engaged. You don’t want to make rash decisions concerning the one day you can’t just re-do if it doesn’t pan out. So, first enjoy some of the splendor that comes with being a fiancé or fiancée. Then, wait until you find professionals that you can trust enough to execute something beyond your wildest dreams. That’s precisely what I plan to do too! My second piece of advice is to plan your day around what makes you swoon, not necessarily what everyone else is doing. As you flip the pages, we’ve packed them full of “alternative” options with everything, including the option NOT to rock a diamond, because now gemstones are all the rage! You won’t want to miss what’s to come! Happy Reading! EABride.com

Dare to Wear a Gemstone

Diamonds have always been a girl’s best friend, but recently they are finding that more and more often they are having to take a back seat to the newly admired gemstone engagement rings. While a trend in colorful ring-wear should have taken flight in the 1980s with Princess Diana’s sapphire engagement ring, it has taken until now for the everyday bride to consider a glistening gem over a traditional diamond. Whether it be a vibrant sapphire or a blissfully pink morganite, do you dare to wear a gemstone?

Morganite

With it’s shimmering blush appearance, the most popular gemstone is morganite. Illustrated here with both a silver and rose gold setting, the versitle gemstone adapts well to its bride’s personal style.

Aquamarine

As the color of the sparkling Caribbean waters, the aquamarine gemstone is the perfect accessory to any proposal. The refreshing shade of blue is commonly placed in a white gold setting with accenting diamonds. 10

Emerald

Emeralds are one of the most vibrant gemstones, illuminating a stunning hue of green. Their recognition grew widespread during ancient times, as they were a popular focal point in crowns worn by royalty.

Sapphire Tourmaline Reflective of the evening sky, the sapphire radiates an intriguing deep blue color. Coupled with radiant diamonds, this gemstone creates a breathtaking engagement ring.

Tourmaline is not a mainstream gemstone but the vivacious color cannot be resisted. This orange tourmaline engagement ring has been arranged in a vintage setting. A truly unique gemstone for an equally unique bride.

Topaz

You can find topaz gemstones in many different colors, including the enchanting yellow shown in this engagement ring. It is believed that a yellow topaz gemstone brings its owner good fortune.

Love Will Find A Way

Knowing you may not have much time left is often a motivator to finally start living the life you’d always dreamed of. And that was the way it was for Colleen Fairchild. Ever since their days as high school sweethearts, Colleen would always manage to cross paths with David Henderson. Regardless of how long it had been since they’d run into each other, they always seemed to be able to pick up right where they’d left off. Many years passed, they married other people and started raising their own families. Without fail, the timing just never quite worked out. Fast forward to the end of 2013. Just after Christmas and right before she was to ring in the New Year, Colleen was given the devastating diagnosis of Terminal Lung Cancer. Not sure where to turn or who to talk to, she was fortunate to find solace in her old friend, David. He would call her faithfully every week to check on her progress. 12

Their bond grew stronger, until they could no longer deny the fact that they’d fallen head over heels back in love with one another. In fact, Colleen even says her favorite thing about David is, “Everything. He’s the most loving man I’ve ever known.” Then there’s David. He didn’t even have to say how much he loves her. It was evident as his entire face lit up whenever he laid eyes on her. According to him, he only wishes he would have reignited his pursuit of her much sooner, so as to have more time together. “She is my bestie, my first true love, my partner-in-crime, and my refuge. She is an amazing mother and grandmother, and hands down the most beautiful and caring person ever.

It was a love story that needed to be told, and was one for the books. Fortunately, Colleen had her very own angel on Earth in her nurse, Nancy Lynn. Inspired to go the extra mile, Nancy put out a plea out on social media. A perfect stranger by the name of Melissa Blayton ended up seeing that plea and stepped up in a big way. Owner of Melissa Blayton Pro Artistry, she is intimately familiar with the wedding industry. When Melissa heard Colleen’s biggest wish was to marry her soulmate before her time here on Earth is up, she knew it was something she could make happen. “I am so blessed to work with some amazing wedding professionals and it was about time we get to play Fairy Godmother and make wishes come true,” says Blayton. In fact, she had an entire team of professionals ready to pay-it-forward in under 12 hours. “That’s just how amazing my friends are.” Melissa comments. Angela and Alan Berry immediately jumped on board, offering up their one-of-a-kind incredible venue, Berry Acres, with a dance floor that simply must be seen to believe. So, the scene was set. And in a matter of hours, the remaining Angels were all lined up, offering to bless the couple with their fine-tuned skills in everything from invitation design, to floral creation, and gorgeous photography. The full list of Angels who came together on Colleen and David’s behalf can be found on the next page. When February 28th, 2016 finally arrived, it was nothing short of spectacular. The day was unusually warm, as the sun sparkled over Berry Acres, and delighted all the guests in attendance. Love was in the air as the couple’s nearest and dearest packed the ceremony seats. The day is one the couple will never forget. After all these seasons, and for so many reasons, love brought these birds back together again. And just when they thought all the excitement was over, they learned their story had even crossed state lines all the way to Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Touched by their story, Patsy & Terry Miller, owners of Treehouse Cottages, found the perfect honeymoon hideaway among the trees for the happy couple to celebrate their next chapter! EABride.com

Ever so thankful for all the amazing things all these people did in their honor, they are busy savoring every second and really living in the moment. Although she’s fighting such a burdensome battle, Colleen chooses not to think of it in that way and insists that she’s pretty darn lucky. As she puts it, “I have an advantage over most people. I know that every day could be my last, so I choose to cherish every second I can.” Thank you to all the people who made this possible. To Colleen and David, we wish you nothing but bliss!

WED TO A DIFFERENT TUNE One of the most important parts of planning your wedding is deciding what it will sound like. And you have more than one affair to think of as you determine the sounds of your engagement party, rehearsal dinner, ceremony, and reception. The old school approach is to hire a DJ and have them click “Play” and “Next” throughout your event. While it will get the job done and the room filled with sound, it is less than entertaining. The day is about you (of course), but part of your duties as host is to entertain your guests and thinking outside the box on the entertainment you choose can be an easy way to infuse fun and life into your event. A hot new sound in Kansas City, which is becoming a popular favorite to couples as they plan their wedding festivities, is dueling pianos. You may immediately think to a night out with friends at a piano bar and initially dismiss the idea, but consider this… just like a wedding DJ sounds different than a club DJ, the musicians of Hammers Entertainment have evolved the sound of dueling pianos to mold to the characteristics of a wedding. Your wedding.

For the Ceremony:

This moment is all about you! Along with pianos, Hammers Entertainment offers the beautiful echoes of violins and other instruments to produce a full sound in the room as you embark on your walk down the aisle. Perfect compositions are arranged and performed to reflect your personal style.

For the Meantime or Mealtime:

Cocktail hour and dinner are ideal times for laid back music to be played that is entertaining to the ear, but does not interfere with conversations. A blend of classics and modern songs can be arranged to appeal to all.

For the Reception:

A high energy, entertaining show with professional interactions from start to finish will leave your guests struck with the motivation to jump to their feet and dance. Start the night with the “G” rated songs for the kids and Grandma and as they night transitions, switch up the rating for the adult crowd.

Trend Alert:

Real Life INSIGHTS

Groomly Gestures Over the past ten years Grooms have become more involved in the planning of their wedding. The responsibility no longer rests on the sole shoulders of the bride (which she has to be excited about). Most men like taking control of the bar or transportation instead of the flowers and decorations, leaving the frilly items to the ladies to gush over. While help in arranging the big day is always appreciated, we see some gentlemen taking their efforts a step further. Whether it be their appreciation for all the work their Bride is doing for the wedding, or what we would like to think is their unrelenting love for her, men are finding ways to surprise their Bride with a memorable moment on the big day. While most men are not known for planning in advance, these special moments have most definitely been thought through and planned with family and wedding professionals. It is a team effort to pull off these special moments, and to keep them a secret from the Bride up until the wedding day. A Groom knew how much his Bride wanted to have a photo booth at their wedding, but their budget just didn’t allow for them to have one. Over several months, he saved bit by bit and ended up contracting a booth. He set up all the details, arranged the delivery, and successfully kept it a secret for months. During the grand entrance at the reception, the wedding party entered first and made a wall in front of the booth. When the Bride and Groom were announced, they walked in, straight towards their friends, and then the group split and he ushered his Bride straight into the booth to take the first set of photos.

26

Photo: A Day to Adore Photography

A Groom, who just happened to be an amazing vocalist, surprised his Bride by picking up the guitar and performing an acoustic version of “Stealing Cinderella” as she took the dance floor with her father for the father/daughter dance. A Groom attended the final walk through at the venue with his fiancé to go over the last minute details. The venue had the capability to project a slideshow of photos for the couple. The bride expressed to the venue manager that she had wanted to put one together but ended up running out of time. The Groom made a mental note of her comment, went home, and spent endless hours collecting and organizing a slideshow. The night of the wedding, once they set down for the dinner, the slideshow magically started in front of the Bride and all of the guests. She was brought to tears at the thoughtfulness of her Groom as the endless memories shined in front of her.

Going Green:

Planting for Perfection Summer is upon us and the frenzy of outdoor weddings is about to commence. With that comes the chance of rainstorms, strong winds, and a brutal sun; all three continuously hovering over a couple’s impeccably planned ceremony. One of the frequent mishaps of outdoor ceremonies is keeping floral arrangements flawless and in place. The sun constantly wilts those once perfectly bloomed hydrangeas and the strong wind blows over shepherd hook vases, tipping the flowers and water to the ground. Choosing to plant flowers in sturdy planters may be your solution to not only surviving the weather, but also in protecting the environment. Instead of ordering pre-cut and placed flowers, plant flowers of your own that bloom in perfect time for the wedding. Being rooted in soil will keep them refreshed and in bloom from the torturous heat. A sturdy planter will keep the plant from blowing over and the occasional rain shower would be a welcomed drink to keep the flowers bright and in bloom. After the wedding you can take the flowers home as a growing reminder of your wedding day or share them with family.

Budget Buster: Back to Basics

We have provided you many budgeting tips over past years, but we think maybe a fresh look at a basic breakdown of expenses might be overdue. Here is a look at each item in your wedding and how it should relate to your overall budget. Your budget should be evolving as you plan. For example, if you decide that photography is more important to you than flowers, then you should reduce the percentage allotted for flowers and move those points to photography. As you reserve professionals and order wedding related items, keep your budget up to date so you can stay on track.

Budget Breakdown Attire & Beauty - 10% Ceremony - 3% Entertainment - 8% Flowers & Decor - 10% Gifts - 2% Photography - 5% Reception - 45% Stationery - 3% Transportation - 3% Videography - 5% Wedding Planning - 6%

Advice from the Aisle

We d d i n g W i s d o m f ro m N e w l y w e d s

From the Bride: I wish we would have spent less time on the guest list. We spent a lot of time “tinkering” with it. Parents would add people and then take people off, and then add more. It got to be too stressful. Especially when it’s a week before you’re sending out invites and changes are being made. It was unnecessary stress, and our least favorite part. I should have said no more changes after a certain date (which I did) and then stuck to it (which I didn’t). In the end, we loved having each and every guest there to celebrate with us and it all worked out. We just lost a lot of sleep over it! -Jennifer When you are planning your wedding, plan something that fits your personality. Don’t worry about what everyone else is going to think, because at the end of the day, you are the ones this day is about. Make it memorable, and don’t be scared to start a new tradition. If I had to do one thing differently- I wouldn’t have spent so much time fussing over the “cocktail hour” music, the darn speaker system ended up going down. -Cindy With so many decisions to make, if you’re stuck, it’s ok to ask someone else to decide. My Maid-of-Honor helped us pick our colors (and a million other things). My planner decided the ceremony layout. My mom picked my headpiece and my lip shade. I gave my florist free reign on my centerpieces, and I let my caterer make all the plating decisions. If you don’t know the answer right away or the thought of deciding is giving you stress, go ahead and hand it off. -Sydney

28

Looking back, two of the best decisions we made were giving ourselves plenty of time to plan and hiring a wedding day coordinator. As a bride, the last thing I wanted to worry about was messing with vendors and schedules! Our coordinator did a wonderful job and really made the day relaxing and stress-free. -Kaitlin

From the Couple: For those who are planning their wedding, we would suggest doing what you want and standing firm in those decisions. It is hard when others are contributing financially to resist the urge to please them, but at the end of it all, it is your wedding. You want it to be what you envision. I (the Bride) also would recommend, as best you can, to stay off Pinterest. You will just overwhelm yourslf. The day I stopped looking at Pinterest, the stress disappeared. Finally, we recommend that you work hard to not let the wedding consume your relationship. This is very hard because it is such an exciting and monumental time in your lives. We found ourselves bickering so much more during the wedding planning process than ever before over things that were, as we look back, just silly. This flower is pink, not blush; we need more time to take pictures, we need to come up with a playlist, why can’t you just glue these ribbons right? And don’t even get us started on the eggshell vs. ivory stationairy debate. We decided we could no longer talk about the wedding all the time, so we made an effort to have date nights where we didn’t speak a word of the wedding. It helped greatly! Bill (the Groom) also said he wished the day would have lasted longer, but other than having a time machine, we don’t see how that’s possible. -Bill & Jennifer

Ask

the expert

By: Lisa Prophete

Q: We are unhappy with the look of the folding chairs/ plastic outdoor chairs for our reception venue, how would you adorn these types of chairs?

Q: I have seen photos of chair ties tied in a bow but don’t personally like that style. Are there other ways to tie the chair tie to create a more modern look?

A: If it’s not in the budget to rent chivari chairs, you can

A: We have many creative ways to give you the modern

affordably cover those chairs with a folding chair cover and/or simply accessorize it with a sash or spandex band with a rhinestone cuff. Our spandex covers will fit plastic outdoor chairs.

Q: My parents are helping us to pay for the wedding and are a part of all of the spending decisions. While the venue’s chairs aren’t horrible to look at, I still want chair covers and ties because I feel that they will complete the look I am going for. My parents on the other hand view them as an unnecessary expense. How can I better communicate to them that chair covers and ties should be on our “must have” list? A: Unless your venue has chivari chairs or something

similar, the fabric color of your venue chair most likely will not fit the color theme of your reception. You’ve spent countless hours choosing colors for the bride and bridesmaids dresses, tux options, floral centerpieces and linen colors. What’s the point in painstakingly mulling over those decisions only to flank the table with chairs that simply do not fit into the color scheme? Chair covers elegantly elevate the room décor by cohesively pulling colors together. In addition, chair covers pull your eye up so that even the brightest of hotel carpet becomes unnoticeable. If all else fails, show them before and after pictures of ANY venue with chair covers – often times, seeing is believing!

42

look you are after. The best option to achieve a more modern look is to rent spandex chair bands. A double band coupled with a rhinestone cuff is becoming more and more popular. This style speaks to many grooms because it has a clean, sleek look. Brides love it because of the “bling” cuff. Another great option, is to tie a sash in a “knot” or an “escot” style to give that punch of color without the look of the traditional bow.

Q: Our venue has chairs that are larger than the average chair, are there chair covers large enough to fit a padded oversized chair? A: Absolutely! We carry a variety of fabric types, including

polyester, satin, lycra and spandex chair covers. Our spandex covers are designed to fit large chairs. The pillowcase and lycra covers will fit almost any chair size, including an office style chair that has a bar instead of legs for support. The spandex covers require the standard four-legged chair as they are outfitted with foot pockets that help to hold the cover in place.

Q: The most popular question that we are asked is, “How much should I expect to spend per chair cover? A: Our prices range from $2.95 (DIY option) to $4.00

(full service option) plus tax. Pricing includes a spandex band/sash or bow; delivery (depending upon location), installation and removal.

Q: What else besides chair covers can Be Seated offer me to help with wedding decor? A: Recently, we added specialty furniture to our rental line.

We carry king and queen throne chairs and a throne love seat as well as white ornate furniture that is as comfortable as it is beautiful! For those brides who are looking to save money on centerpieces, we have affordably priced centerpieces that stand on their own without the use of flowers.

Q: After recently viewing your new website, I am interested in renting your showroom for my bridal shower, can you give me more information regarding how this works? A: Our showroom is a clean modern comfortable space

that is perfectly located in Overland Park, KS. The space comfortably accommodates 30 people seated (more for standing room only) for $75 per hour.

For more information on chair coverings and rentals, you may contact Be Seated through the avenues below:

Socrates once said, “The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.” That is precisely what an entire collective of Kansas City Wedding Warriors attempted to do on Sunday, March 6, 2016, at the 1st Annual aEa Bridal Event. These were not novice vendors, but rather seasoned industry professionals that decked the halls of Arrowhead Stadium that day with an impressive amount of experience under their belts. They know their business. They understand their brides. And they demanded a better experience for everyone involved. Simply put, they understood that “Change is hard at first, messy in the middle, and gorgeous at the end.” (Sharma). And they weren’t above getting in on the ground floor, getting their hands dirty, and planting the seeds of something more innovative. For the multi-faceted couple, we created a multi-faceted concept. From one side of the field to the other, there was no shortage of sights to be seen. Innovative Lighting designed a state-of-the-art stage setup, complete with audio, and stellar lighting to capture the catwalk. It certainly did justice to the incredible collections featured in the fashion show that was put on thanks to the incredible efforts of Janay Mallela of Janay A Eco Bridal. With her spearheading this portion, and the immense talents of the Melissa Blayton Pro Artistry team who glammed up all of our gorgeous girls (and guys), they literally rocked the runway! In between collections, many of the professionals took a few minutes to introduce themselves and their business to the audience. It was a way for couples to meet the professionals without all the pressure, and proved to be the winning combination for several speakers. As guests headed into the next room, they were enticed to jump into the Banana Who Booth before they were greeted with some gorgeous table designs. Between Be Seated, Weddings by Hannah, and Come Join Us, the tables and chairs were literally transformed into individual Pinterest-worthy wonders. The booths were lined along the corridor, giving everyone a chance to be seen as couples continued on to the Foolish Club, where Tamara Hudson of Encore Unique Boutique and Kelly Acock were the creative inspiration for the Pop-Up Shop, retailing and detailing darling items to accessorize, inspire, and engage the engaged! Break-out sessions were had, as some of the best in their respective fields cracked the code and leaked some of their secrets.

46

Keeping everything streamlined was our stunning emcee, and Chiefs Correspondent, Jillian Carroll, who made walking the length of the stadium in heels look like a piece of cake. That’s even as she raced across to the North Club immediately following the fashion show for our final event of the day, the Cake Battles. This is where three teams, lead by Sherrie Ortiz, Cami SanRomani, and Bill Burns duked it out over the best Royal-theme cake creation. But it’s what happened next that had everyone surprised. Right after Bill Burns took the battle win, Mike Elder, who organized the teams with his cake co-conspirator (and love of his life), Carey Iennacarro, dropped down on one knee (with the help of each team holding up hand made signs at the end that read “Marry Me Carey.”) and asked her to be his forever. That is what we call a happily ever after ending!

To all the couples who came out, we thank you, and hope we helped shed some light on your planning process. To the professionals who bared their business souls on behalf of brides, we thank you. We feel fortunate to have connected with so many industry pioneers, on the brink of something rather remarkable, if we do say so ourselves. We lived it. We learned so much from it. And we’re coming back next year, even better and brighter than before. So, please stay tuned as we announce the date of next year’s show, as the only thing we can say so far, is that good, good things are in store. EABride.com

Wedding Wise Save yourself the regret later and hire a professional wedding planner and videographer. Those that skip these professional services on their wedding day, look back afterwards and commonly regret their choice. -Jana Marie, Jana Marie Photography

This isn’t Hollywood. Everybody who is there on your wedding day loves you. If the cake falls on the floor – just step over it and keep on going. This should be a meaningful and fun event, not a production. -Judy Sherry, Hilton President

Try to visit/tour your venue at the same time of day in which you are envisioning your ceremony to take place. If your wedding is being held outdoors, this is a perfect opportunity to get a sense of the natural lighting, and confirm with your venue if additional lighting elements are available if necessary. -Lindsey Haynes, The Bowery

50

Don’t try to stock a bar yourself – leave it to the experts. From the quantities and types of liquor, to ice and equipment, you will be glad you left it in the hands of a bartending service. -Mary Ortiz, Diamond Girls Bartending

Regardless of price, pick wedding professionals that you feel comfortable with, you trust, and that give you peace of mind for your wedding. It is a crazy, beautiful, wonderful day and you shouldn’t have to worry. -Alan Berry, Berry Acres

Make sure to budget for wedding gown alterations. So many times brides get caught up in the price of the gown that they totally forget that there are other costs to consider. In order for the gown to fit you the absolute best, the gown needs to be tailored to your body. No matter which bridal shop you visit be sure to ask for an estimate so you can have that money set aside. -Rachel Simmons, Ivory & Lace Bridal Boutique

Stay in your lane. It is not necessary to micromanage your professionals. All it does is put added stress on everyone involved. You have placed your wedding in each of your vendors hands because you trust them. While your ideas are good, theirs may be great and something you never thought of. So just enjoy the moment, and let your vendors deliver a day better than anything you could have dreamed up. -Christie Scott, EA Bride Magazine

Find a unique and pretty hanger for your wedding gown detail photos. You have spent so much time picking out the perfect gown for you, definitely find a hanger for that showcase photo. There are several to choose from on Etsy for a very reasonable price. You will regret not doing this when you see your gorgeous gown hanging on a plastic hanger in your photo album. -Janine McDonald, Perfect Timing Portraits

Some merchants (particularly in Europe) offer what is known as dynamic currency conversion, which means they will charge you in dollars rather than the local currency. Because some card issuers will waive the currency conversion fee if your overseas purchase is made in dollars, dynamic currency conversion could help you save a few dollars. Sometimes you will get a fee from the merchant instead ,so you may end up losing money. Check before requesting this to know which fees apply to either option before deciding which currency to use. -Robert Riesmeyer, Travel Benefits by Design

Make sure to ask your venue if there will be a day-of coordinator on site. Many locations will have staff on hand to help turn rooms as needed and assist you or your planner with the last-minute arrangements. They are there to ensure that everything that the venue has been contracted to provide is delivered smoothly and that you have all your questions answered as they arise. Keep in mind that they work for the venue, so it is usually helpful if not critical to have your own planner and/or designer on board to take care of your priorities. -Lori Glazer, Town Pavilion

Allow time for pictures when there is still light and before people are worn out or have had too much to drink. Ideally, knock out as many as you can prior to the ceremony so you aren’t making people wait in-between the ceremony and reception. If you do have to use that block of time for pictures make sure you have beverages, food and entertainment for your guests. Speaking of feeding, you run the risk of loosing your groomsmen or bridesmaids early on in the day if you dont keep them feed and hydrated. Buy a case of water and bring a cooler for drinks and consider having someone grab a couple sandwich trays on their way to the venue.

-Debra Lawrence, Abundant Moments Photography

Trust your vendors! Ask you venue (or other vendors) who they work with and trust. We all want your big day to be amazing! Venues see the work of caterers, photographers, wedding planners, DJ, florists, cake companies, etc. every day. We know everyone! We also know who will get your vision and see it through to the end. People in the industry know who does exemplary work and who doesn’t. Building a great team from start to finish will ensure a successful event. -Marisa Roberts Owner, Venue at Willow Creek

When I planned my wedding, no one bothered to mull over the details with me. I was a wedding coordinator planning my own wedding; I had it covered. However, after my second big life event, having a baby, I have realized that people can be more opinionated and judgmental than necessary. Now that I’m not the expert in this area, everyone is providing their opinion. Its led me to think that if I hadn’t known everything about weddings, would I have received the same treatment for that life event as well? This very well could be your situation. If you find yourself in the midst of planning your wedding and discouraged by all of the opinions and unsolicited suggestions, you need to remember that this is YOUR wedding day. Who cares if Aunt Mary wants you to have a formal sit down dinner instead of the much more affordable buffet? She likely isn’t paying the bill. And don’t lose sleep if you have family members upset that you don’t want kids in attendance. It is still a family event even if the kids aren’t there chasing each other around the room and throwing gum on the dance floor. After your wedding, the people that offered the judgmental and harsh opinions will likely move on to bullying the next bride. Stick to your guns when it matters. You got this! - Britney Jones, Plush Productions EABride.com

f f f f f HENNA HYPE hen·na noun 1. the powdered leaves of a tropical shrub, used as a dye to color the hair and decorate the body. 2. the Old World shrub that produces henna, with small pink, red, or white flowers.

BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB There’s very little not to love about henna. Praised for its beautiful and intricate lines, the art form has experienced a popularity spike in recent years. Meant to signify luck and prosperity, it is no wonder many brides are often incorporating it into their wedding day rituals. Henna takes on many uses, but Mehndi is the process of painting the skin in a henna paste. Typically, brides have either their hands and/or feet decorated, and once the paste has dried over several hours, it flakes off, revealing a beautiful stain that develops and deepens over time, and then lasts about 10 days. We were so curious about this process, we wanted to see it for ourselves. So, we called upon Henna artist and extraordinaire, Jason Alan. He owns Henna Being and travels the globe teaching and creating new designs. Whether you want an image recreated or will give him the opportunity to free hand something better than you could even have imagined, he can make it happen. It was evident from our first encounter that he cares deeply about the henna cause, and takes pride in every piece he designs.

52

He explained that although true bridal Mehndi involved staining both front and back of your hands and arms to the elbow, that brides can still interpret that loosely if they’re just looking to incorporate pieces of it into their day. In fact, it’s a great experience for brides and their maids to share together, as it will definitely make for even more amazing photos. Jason takes it one step further, by making sure all the ingredients are natural, and safe for your skin. We are all now fans of this process, and after all the compliments we got in the ten days that followed, it’s safe to say we will be back again… and again. To schedule your own staining, check out Jason’s website at www.hennabeing.com.

The Inside Scoop - getting wed within the industry -

Whenever a new year is approaching, New Year’s resolutions are the mantra. Resolutions were the last thing on my mind as the first day of the year arrived – I was knee deep in planning my wedding. It was crunch time as the date, January 22nd, was quickly approaching. After several years of being widowed, I hadn’t thought about being in a relationship, much less marrying again. I owned a bar and bartending service, commonly putting in sixteen hour days. Never say never. I met him by chance when he walked into my bar as I was preparing for opening day. With a drill in his hand, he announced that he would like to remove his pool plaques from the wall. It was love at first sight. I didn’t know why he wanted to remove his plaques, but I knew I wanted to see him again, so I suggested he come back on the night he was supposed to play. The rest is history and two years later, we were engaged. At the time, my bartending company had served over 800 weddings, so I had accrued several connections within the industry. Therefore, I decided I had a good knowledge on how to plan my own wedding. I embarked on the journey to plan the day of my dreams, taking pieces of the weddings I had witnessed and selecting the prime professionals whom I considered to be the best of the best. Planning a wedding is a tremendous undertaking that should not be taken without some guidance. However, it can be done with patience and organization. Start with a notebook. Have tabs for each detail of your wedding. Find photos of the things you love – from flowers to table settings and put those photos in the notebook under the category. When you visit with potential vendors, it is easier to convey your preferences with photos. Use the notebook to keep all receipts and contracts. Planning a wedding is like a domino effect; you can’t start on one phase of planning until another is in place. Take each phase in stride, spending more time on the aspects of the wedding that mean more to you than the others. The best advice I can give is to make your wedding unique – make it yours. 62

by: Mary Ortiz, Owner of Diamond Girls Bartending

Rings

Don’t be affraid to think outside of the box when it comes to your wedding ring. We decided to create a ring using rings that otherwise would have remained in my jewelry box. Having a ring made from other rings might not be ideal for everyone, but it ended up being quite the experience for us. I knew I didn’t want a traditional ring and fell in love with morganite. Its fine pink tones are said to radiate charm, spirit and tenderness. We contacted the Jewelry Doctor and explained our vision. They acquired a nine carat morganite stone that we could use as a center stone. A little over six carats of diamonds were removed from rings that I brought from home. Combined, the morganite and diamonds were beautifully arranged to become my wedding ring. My husband opted for a classic diamond wedding band, which we purchased at a local Zales jeweler.

Location

The first question to address is if you want to have your ceremony at the same location as the reception or not. If you want a church ceremony, confirm the date with your church and then move forward to locating a venue that is within a reasonable distance. If you plan on having both the ceremony and reception at the same location, you need to consider your guests and how far they will need to travel. Many locations book well in advance, so once you do have a date in mind, move forward to selecting a location. When shopping for the location for our ceremony, it was unwritten that we wanted to be married in a church. With both of us being widowed and of faith, our ceremony would have the most meaning if we joined together as husband and wife in a religious setting. Once we walked into St. Mary’s church, we were both in tears and knew we had found the place.

Our final decision for the reception venue was The Uptown Theatre. We wanted a more upscale, vintage glam theme, and the Uptown provided the perfect backdrop. We loved was having our names on the marquee. Despite the requirement to use their catering and bartending services, we had a wonderful meal and experience.

Attire

There is an abundance of bridal stores, but you don’t have to purchase a “bridal” dress. There are many formalwear stores that sell gowns that could double as a wedding gown. Also, you don’t necessarily have to wear the traditional white. Colors such as blush and champagne are becoming increasingly popular.

My dress was actually a pageant dress. The layers of skirt were three different colors: pink, champagne and pale yellow. Together, the three layers gave off an iridescent look. I found it online at a store in New York and had it shipped to a local bridal store. Even though I was in love with the dress, I took it a step further and recruited the talented Janay Mallela of Janay A Eco Bridal. Janay not only altered the dress for that perfect fit, but created both a custom headpiece, veil and belt to make the dress really special.

Flower Girl

My granddaughter, Jayla, was to be my flower girl and she is definitely a tutu type of girl. I found Red Carpet Tutus on Etsy to create the flower girl dress. The dress was all about the tulle – layers upon layers. I elected to have the flower girl dress match the color of my own and had Janay Eco Bridal add a rhinestone embellished belt. EABride.com

Accommodations

We decided we needed a “multi-functional” hotel – one that we could stay at the night of our rehearsal dinner (so I would be in place in the morning for hair and makeup), a place for our first look, and a room for our wedding night. We chose Hotel Sorella, located in the heart of the Country Club Plaza. Hotel Sorella’s style is a grand fusion of modern design coupled with a Mediterranean inspiration. Their staff was instrumental in finding a location for our first look. We met with their coordinators well in advance of our wedding and were shown several options that included both inside and outside spaces. On our wedding day, I knew there would be a flurry of activity in our room – hair and makeup artists arriving for both bride and bridesmaids, a dressmaker for dressing and veil placement, bouquets and boutonnieres being delivered; bottom line is that we needed space. Hotel Sorella arranged us in a suite to accommodate for all of the mornings activities. They also arranged a separate room for my husband and groomsmen to dress in.

Rehearsal Dinner

Plan your rehearsal and the rehearsal dinner well in advance. Typically the groom’s family would host this event, but there are no hard and fast rules. The rehearsal dinner is a great opportunity to engage with your bridal party in a more private setting. Many upscale restaurants have private dining facilities that can be booked and create a wonderful atmosphere. After interviewing many locations, we selected Harrah’s 37 Steak. Not only did they provide a beautiful private dining room with private bar, they also added special touches such as a flambe table for dessert as well as a craft cocktail demonstration performed by one of their bartenders. We decided on a predetermined menu for our guests to order off of. Everything was delicious and service was impeccable.

Flowers

Usually flowers are broken down into bridal party flowers and décor. There is no better florist than Village Gardens. They make sure to understand your vision to bring it to life. An inexpensive way to create volume in centerpieces is to pick large variety flowers for fill, such as hydrangeas and lilies. We went elaborate on the flowers. Village Gardens created three types of table arrangements ranging from floating candles to large floral centerpieces. The result was amazing. My bouquet contained a variety of roses in the colors of my palette and featured both a broach and a rhinestone necklace.

Cake

From serving at many weddings and attending bridal shows, I was constantly running into Adorn Cakes. Owner Aleta’s creations run the gamut from whimsical to full blown classic cake. Her flavor combinations are very creative ranging from Chocolate Covered Strawberry to Peanut Butter Caramel. For our wedding, Aleta created a five tier, champagne colored cake to go along with our theme. Since we really didn’t need a five tier cake to feed 150 guests, the bottom layer was “faux”. It appeared that it was another layer and provided us with that wow effect of having a large cake. We were fortunate to have friends of Italian American decent who also prepared an array of Italian cookies for us.

Photography

Package options and cost for photography fluxuate and it is a difficult task to sort through the number of photographers and their portfolios. Don’t fall into the trap of a photographer that does strictly weddings. After much research on my part (and witnessing photographers working at weddings), I decided on Jim Powers of Powershots Photography. 64

Transportation If both your ceremony and reception will be held at the same location, it makes sense to have everyone drive. However, if you are going to be making stops for photos either before or after the ceremony, you may want the bridal party to travel as a group. My husband and I opted for Pech Limousine. We had the bridal party picked up by a limo for transportation to the Uptown Theatre, but, in keeping with our theme, had arranged for a vintage Rolls Royce to transport us. Included with the rental, we also got a red carpet, Just Married sign, and champagne. My wedding planning process spanned a year and I can honestly say all of the vendors I chose were exactly what I wanted. Now, as I look back on the photos, I truly did achieve the wedding of my dreams. Photos by: Powersshots

A seemingly random selection of comfort foods. As they made their way around to the various stations they found a card at each station. On this card was a story of how this particular food fits into our story. The anecdotes ranged from sweet and romantic to raucous and funny. It was a very endearing and a great way for all of our guests to really connect to the event and maybe even learn something about us that they didn’t know before.

Thomas & Sydney’s LOVE

STORY

L O C AT I O N

lenexa ks

Thomas and I met in the Summer of 2012 in Kansas City. There wasn’t a single moment that made us happen, but a lot of little ones that steered us together. At the time, I was in college in Nebraska and he had one semester left at NDSU. We had both landed internships with the same company. It was pretty casual at first, but once the summer ended we decided to try out the long distance thing. There were a lot of ups and downs, a lot of moves, but we made it work and eventually made our home here in Kansas City. After about two years together, Tom and I went on a vacation to Martha’s Vineyard – in my opinion one of the most beautiful places in the world. It was both of our first time’s there, and he proposed to me on my favorite beach. I’m not sure that I ever really said yes because mostly I was crying tears of joy. We got to enjoy the rest of our vacation in freshly engaged bliss. There are many words I would use to describe our wedding - vintage, chic, romantic, elegant, intimate - but the one word that fits best is “us”. On the day of our wedding we started out with a bit of tradition. The boys and girls got ready in separate rooms. My girls and I, dressed in silk robes and freshly paintednails, spent the morning having our hair done and make-up applied while playing MASH. While my girls were getting their finishing touches done, my mother helped me into my vintage-inspired Watters gown. My “something new” was a lace and organza, floral hairpiece my mom had got me. My “something blue” were vintage estate earrings my step-father had picked out for me. My “something old”, and also my “something borrowed”, was a cuff-style, bracelet that belonged to my late grandmother. I even had a silver sixpence from my grandparents taped inside my left shoe! Thomas and I decided to do a first look before the ceremony. He waited anxiously behind a large barn-style door as I slid it open. It was a lot of hugging and trying not to ruin my make-up by crying. We held our ceremony outside at Shawnee Mission Park. One of our readings was a passage out of Harry Potter. We are both pretty big nerds (an engineer and an auditor) and one of our shared and most deeply held fandoms is Harry Potter. As we all know, the reception is the party. We really took that to heart, so our concepts were totally focused on our guests. At the top of a menu at each place setting, it explained that the bride and groom being quite food-driven themselves have requested that if you are hungry - eat! Our food stations and the meanings behind them were a special treat to our guests. Our cake cutting was celebrated with our collective favorite dessert which is cheesecake. After a night of dancing and hugging and losing our shoes, there is one last memento, the souvenir of a day full of fun and love, the wedding favor. It was important for our own reasons that it be simple and something guests would actually want to have. We decided on an old-fashioned whiskey glass and monogrammed it with an elegant ‘W’ and the date. 72

Our first dance was my favorite part of the wedding because we spent countless hours preparing, organizing, and planning for it. When it all came down to it, that was five minutes we got to spend all to ourselves with everyone watching us. It was a short period of time only about us where it didn’t matter who was watching. Also because it was a surprise - no one had any idea I could dance!

I think my favorite moment was after our first look. We walked over into the reception space and practiced our first dance. It was just us. We got to take it all in before things got crazy, and it was the only part of the whole day that we would get to be alone together.

Matt & Cindy’s LOVE

STORY

L O C AT I O N

kansas city, mo

Matt and I met while working at the same advertising agency in Kansas City. We had always been good friends, even working on the same team for a while. However, we were both in relationships at the time, and it wasn’t until those were ending that we realized we had chemistry. I think both working in the same crazy industry gave us the empathy for each other’s long hours and demanding work loads, instead of causing animosity. We were both ambitious with our careers, so we both ended up starting our own companies, and ten years later, we decided we should make it official! The proposal was great! We had purchased a ring together several months before, so I knew it was coming at some point. Every special occasion I would think “This has to be it!” but it wouldn’t happen. Then, a few weeks before Christmas we joined another couple and took a limo ride around Kansas City, stopping in at some of our favorite bars. After a cocktail at Plaza III, my friends pretended to set up a photo opportunity for us in front of the plaza lights. As I turn around, Matt is down on one knee. After saying yes, we made our way to the next stop, Ca’Va, where all our friends were waiting for a surprise engagement party. Owning my own business, I knew I wouldn’t have time to worry about all the little details with the wedding; so the first thing I did was hire a wedding planner. We are not really traditional people, and we really just wanted to have a big celebration for all of the important people in our life. All of the traditional things just didn’t feel right to us, so we started customizing the whole day into something that really fit our personalities and the vibe we wanted to have. Food trucks instead of sit down dinner, custom dress instead of one off the shelf, the list goes on. The way I always described it to people was street fair meets carnival. From the time people started arriving at the ceremony, until the time they left for the night, we wanted them to be smiling and having a great time. Everyone we have seen since that night says it was “The best wedding EVER!”, I think we accomplished our goal.

A FEW

special pieces The one thing I wanted to incorporate was something from my late father, so I had the florist wrap my boquet in one of his old ties. He had one with lions and tigers on it, so as crazy as it was, it fit right in with the theme. Matt picked out our walk in song for the ceremony, Somewhere Over the Rainbow, and then produced a custom wood sign-in piece for our guestbook that referenced that song. It was just those little details that made everything so special.

I loved that there was hardly anyone that just sat the whole night. Everyone was up, dancing, playing games, getting tattoos…. It was a true party all night.

My favorite part of the wedding day was the look on Matt’s face when the surprise Bon Jovi cover band started playing! I had arranged for the band to play and he knew nothing about it until they started.

special pieces The bridal party was from equally divided sides of the state - one group from Kansas City and the other from St. Louis. Our wedding occurred when both teams, the Royals and Cardinals, were in the playoffs. We decided to embrace the timing and wore personalized shirts from our respective teams for our entrances into the reception. It was great! One side of the room would erupt with cheers and the other with boos. It really got the guests excited!

William & Jenniver’s LOVE

STORY

L O C AT I O N

lee’s summit, mo

Bill and I met at Missouri State University through mutual friends. We were friends for several months before we began dating. We dated for four years before getting engaged, and then two more years before we said “I do.” Although we had a long courtship, we fell quickly in love and knew within the first month we’d be married. Bill invited me to St. Louis for his dad’s big 50th birthday party shortly after dating for a month. It just felt perfect. After that, we quickly fell in love. We decided to take the “slow track” while we finished college. Then I started law school, so we decided to wait until after those three years were over. Every year we have an annual Christmas dinner with close friends. We typically drive around to look at Christmas lights. As we made a stop and got out of the car to look at a display, I turned around to find Bill down on one knee. It was a total surprise! My immediate reaction was to grab the ring straight from the box and put it on. Bill responded by asking, “So, is that a yes?” It was a wonderful night with our friends that we will always remember. We wanted our wedding to feel timeless, but with personal touches. We wanted to be able to look back on the pictures on our 50th wedding anniversary and it still be just as beauiful. We didn’t want any “what were we thinking? reactions down the road. We kept the notion of romantic timelessness in our minds throughout the planning process. We hired a planner almost immediately. She was the second vendor we booked after our photographer. I was in law school and the idea of planning and organizing a wedding while completeing my studies was too much to handle. The wedding “crunch time” was going to occur right as I was studying for the bar exam, and we didn’t want the wedding to interfere with my studies. Instead of a theme, we opted for a color palette of blush, gold, and ivory to incorporate throughout the wedding. Once the day arrived everything was very smooth! Our coordinator did a fantastic job keeping everything on track and moving wonderfully. We had a beautiful ceremony with family and friends there supporting who traveled from all over the country (we had guests in attendance from 11 different states). Between the ceremony and reception we celebrated with our closest friends while we took pictures. We had so much fun celebrating! Our photos were filled with fun and laughter. We had a beautiful reception that came together wonderfully. And best of all, we danced the night away!

While it was all beautiful and perfect one moment stands out the most. We had a classic car take us from the church to our first photo location. It was such a perfect exit and it was wonderful spending that 20 minute car ride with just the two of us right after we said “I do”.

Jeff & Kaitlin’s

LOVE

STORY

L O C AT I O N

kansas city, mo

Jeff and I met our freshman year of high school, way back in 2000. We were both waiting to be picked up after school, and Jeff had just enough confidence to say hi. The next year, I persuaded Jeff to take yearbook class with me, and we quickly became best friends. My friends would often say that we were joined at the hip and his friends would often poke fun at him for being stuck in the “friend zone.” Even though I dated his best friend for most of high school, we would often go on “Jeff and Kaitlin dates,” where we’d spend hours driving around talking and listening to angsty pop punk music from the many CD mixes we made each other. Senior year, we decided to go to different colleges. Saying goodbye was one of the hardest things we had to do. Fortunately, our relationship remained strong, despite the distance. During our freshman year of college, we traveled back and forth from KU and MU to visit each other. Then, on New Year’s Eve freshman year, we finally shared our first kiss. A few months later, Jeff asked me to be his girlfriend. Everything was going pretty well when we received a somewhat major surprise the summer of 2011. I was pregnant! We soon moved in together and began making preparations to welcome our little girl to our lives. We always knew that we loved each other, but it wasn’t until we saw how great we were together as parents that we were 100 percent convinced that we were meant to be. Nine years after we met in high school, Jeff surprised me by popping the question on my birthday! During the planning process, Jeff and I tried to incorporate a lot of little details that were unique to our story. We really wanted our wedding to be a tribute to the happy, quirky, romantic and fun aspects of our relationship. Everything from the hand drawn Save-the-Date cards to the three foot wall decal with our favorite song lyric were all little details that made our day so special. Music has been a huge part of our relationship, so picking out our ceremony music was definitely a huge highlight of the planning process! In high school, we would drive around for hours listening to “The Best of Me” by The Starting Line. I couldn’t have imagined a better song to play while I walked down the isle. We looked for the sheet music for months with no luck. It wasn’t until the day before we were to meet with our ceremony musicians, Forte Quartet, that we found it and sent it over knowing it would probably be too late. The next afternoon we were wrapping up our song selections when they told us their composer had been up all night finishing our song and asked if we would like to hear it. It all worked out perfectly and made the moment more special than I could have ever dreamed. EABride.com

The dancing. All along it was our goal to make it fun and entertaining for guests. We set the tone by having the DJ introduce the wedding party to the song “Shut Up and Dance.” The entire wedding party converged onto the dance floor and had a mini dance party. Everyone in the crowd got up and started clapping and dancing along. It stayed that way all night. 88

special pieces My personal piece is my wedding outfit that was designed by my mother. She was going through a museum magazine when a design caught her eye. She sketched something similar and picked out the materials in Pakistan, told me I wasn’t allowed to see it until it was complete. She loves surprising people! A few months before the wedding, I finally got to see it and I was blown away with how beautiful it was. It was the perfect mix of American and Pakistani and fit in perfectly with the vintage theme of the night.

Ozair & Bisma’s LOVE

STORY

L O C AT I O N

kansas city, mo

I’m from Kansas City and Ozair’s from Chicago, but we ended up meeting each other halfway across the world. I was in Pakistan for an interview for a medical school and was told to wait in a room with a handful of fellow interviewees. While waiting for my turn, I noticed there was a guy there with an American accent who was joking around and smiling the entire time. Up until then I had yet to meet a fellow American, so I was intrigued and asked him where he was from. We struck up a conversation and figured out we had quite a few friends in common in the U.S. In fact, we found out that there were multiple occasions where he had come to Kansas to visit family friends and we had just missed bumping into each other. Our conversation was so easy that I felt like we had known each other forever. After that day, we both knew this was the start of something special. In traditional Pakistani culture, parents play a pivotal role in the bringing together of relationships. Not only do they see it as a man and woman joining together in marriage, but two families as well. So following tradition, Ozair asked his parents to ask my parents for my hand in marriage. While I had no idea of what was planned, my family knew in advance. With their blessing, Ozair popped the question while we were surrounded by our families and I of course said yes. Family is very important to me, so it was perfect having all of them there sharing this special moment with us. I’ve always felt proud of my multi-cultural heritage and knew that I wanted my big day to be representative of that. So I knew early on that I would like my dream wedding to be a wonderful blend of both worlds. My mother shared the same vision as me and helped plan most of the wedding, from my dress to the centerpieces to how the stage was decorated. We felt like we needed some help getting organized, so with a month left until the wedding, we hired a wedding coordinator. She was the best decision we made! It was always my dream to get married in Union Station, and I always envisioned complimenting the beautiful venue with a soft vintage theme. The morning of our wedding, I entered the venue and was blown away with how phenomenal everything looked. From the whimsical flower decorations to the grand stage, everything was more than I could have wanted. The day was filled with laughter, tears, and happiness all around!

Mitcher & Emily’s LOVE

STORY

L O C AT I O N

kansas city, mo

We both work for the same company, PwC. We work in different departments and usually sit on different floors, so we didn’t run into each other at work. Mitcher had been working for a few years, and I had just started that year, when we met at my first holiday party. Mitcher had a few friends at work who knew me and they knew that I really liked to read, especially Harry Potter. Mitcher, himself, was also a book-lover, so he came up to me to start talking about books. We talked for a few minutes at the holiday party, during which, he recommended a book for me to read. The next morning I woke up and wrote down the name of the book so I could check it out later. After that, we went into busy tax season. I work long hours and travel a lot for work, so I didn’t run into Mitcher until four months later. I ran into him in the kitchen at work and we started our conversation about books again. Over the next few months, we talked occasionally at work events and ended up reading a few books we recommended to each other. Months after that, we became closer and eventually started dating! We dated for about four years before getting engaged. We had thought about getting engaged for a while, and was something we decided together. One day when we were out shopping, we decided to just stop by a few ring stores. That was when it felt real for me. We picked out a ring together. I wanted to get engaged as soon as we got the ring, but he wanted to have a special proposal. A few days after we bought the ring, we went and visited his family in Salina for Thanksgiving and on our drive home on the day after Thanksgiving, he started acting really weird. We had decided to go to Barley’s for dinner that night, which is one of our go-to restaurants. But he kept wanting to put a time on it. I didn’t understand why we had to have a specific time in mind – why couldn’t we just go when we were hungry? Also, he became obsessed with putting up the Christmas tree at home THAT DAY when we got home. It was very suspicious to me because he had never cared about holiday decorations before. So I had a sneaking suspicion he had something planned. However, the good news was that it gave me some time to pick out a favorite outfit and do my makeup how I wanted to. Before we left for dinner, he pulled me over in front of the lit Christmas tree and got down on one knee. Even though I knew what was coming, his speech was so beautiful that I couldn’t help but cry. After his proposal, we (of course!) had to go to dinner! When we got there, all of our friends were to surprise us and celebrate. It was wonderful to get to celebrate with friends on that special day. When we thought about our wedding, we wanted it to be about “us” and show our friends and family what we were as a couple. So we knew we wanted good food (we are both BIG foodies), great bar options (we have an extensive at-home bar), and a night of dancing (we can’t help but bust a move). So we spent our money on those things since they were really important to us.
