LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER: To many people, getting engaged to be married is the ultimate accreditation of your relationship. As if the ring on your finger proclaims that you climbed the mountain of resilience and overcome the hardships of balancing everyday life, making it through arguments on who’s turn it was to make dinner, and survived the unnerving trips through Ikea together just to find another white frame. In a way, it feels like an end, at least to your own independence; but in all actuality, it should feel like the beginning. For me, this is very similar to what I experienced after finishing college. From early on, we’ve all been programmed to go from step to step, and that's just what I did. From grade school, to high school, to college, to an internship, and on to a big kid job. But for me, and a few of my honest friends, it felt weird when the structure was gone. It’s as if you are exploring the world in a new way, without deadlines and prejudiced onlookers, and for the first time looking at the world around you without the straight lines of social pressure and expectations of timely completion. This programming is similar with a relationship; from the first date, to dating, to “exclusive”, to moving in together, to getting engaged, and the destined wedding day serving as the finale. While the beginning of a relationship is so exhilarating and makes time feel as if it hasn’t passed at all, once these milestone in your relationship have been reached, you may experience that same feeling I had after I landed my big kid job, “Okay, now what?”. And the answer to that question, in its divine simplicity, is anything. The accomplishment is not a beautiful wedding, it's a lasting marriage. A marriage that continues to make you your best self, that brings happiness to your life through shared experiences, and that feeds your soul day-in-and-day-out, for a lifetime. So, while I’m happy that you are using our magazine, blog, social media, etc. to help plan your wedding, my wish for you goes well beyond the big day. I hope that when the craziness of guests lists and timelines have passed, and when the noise surrounding the wedding has subsided, you find yourself in a realm of new opportunity for your relationship. Because the wedding is not the end of your story, it’s the beginning. A beginning where you can explore your lives through new lenses of happiness and be comforted in knowing that whether joyful or gloomy times arrive at your doorstep, you have your lifetime companion right there with you. Unique Wedding Weekend Accommodations FOR THE BRIDAL PARTY A couple's bridal party often fulfills a multi-faceted role throughout the wedding planning process, especially during the wedding weekend. The individuals that a couple asks to stand by their side on the most important day of their lives typically help fulfill practical roles in addition to being present to celebrate and share in the couple's joy. Though perhaps not at the top of the wedding planning checklist for most couples, finding the perfect wedding weekend accommodations for their bridal party may nevertheless be the key to less stress on the big day. While the unique dynamics of each bridal party will dictate what makes sense for each couple and their group, having a place for the entire bridal party to stay (or individually as the ladies or the men) over the wedding weekend offers many logistical benefits. As an example, the morning of the wedding is often witness to a flurry of last minute and essential tasks, which could include putting finishing touches on decorations, delivering programs to the ceremony location, and/or distributing bouquets and corsages. For the bride and groom, having their team on-hand operating from a central location near the venue is a great way to streamline the execution of these tasks, which means less stress for everyone! And then there is the getting ready process. For the ladies, this typically means having a team of hair and makeup professionals come to you; so, having enough space to all get ready together enhances and simplifies the experience. Though the getting ready process is a usually a bit more abbreviated for the guys, it's still a lot more fun to have everyone around to help get the party started. These three locations are unique options that offer more open space and amenities than the typical hotel room; which, for example, often don't have enough space for a bride and several bridesmaids to all get their hair and makeup done at the same time. 14

Located in the city's urban core, these examples of large-party lodgings, all with deep roots in Kansas City history, are perfect for couples who have selected one of the many venues located in downtown. They are also a great place to crash after a night out following a bachelor/bachelorette party.

1. THE RIEGER PENTHOUSE This Crossroads property originally housed the historic Rieger Hotel, a Kansas City fixture that opened in 1915. The building now houses The Rieger, a fine-dining restaurant with French and Italian inspired cuisine and a penthouse that recently clinched The Metropolitan Home magazine's "Home of the Year" award. The self-proclaimed "Million Dollar Condo", per its VRBO listing, boasts 7,500 square feet of space, has four spacious bedrooms spread out over three floors, and has its own rooftop deck and screened sunroom. With a full kitchen on one floor and a separate kitchenette on another, plus six luxurious bathrooms, this property is truly the best of both worlds in terms of community and privacy. Stylishly appointed in rustic, old-world charm, the property's rate per night (thankfully) doesn't quite live up to its nickname, and can host up to sixteen guests. The perfect scheme would be to hold a rehearsal dinner in The Rieger's private dining room and then head upstairs for a nightcap with the bridal party on the rooftop deck.

3. THE PEPPARD HOUSE Developer Megan Duma spent fifteen months renovating this historic property located in Kansas City's Westside neighborhood, rescuing the designated landmark from disrepair and transforming it into "Kansas City's Most Luxurious Airbnb."

Originally built in 1887 as a residence for prominent Kansas City businessman J. G. Peppard, the Queen Anne revival home has been restored to its former glory with interiors that honor the home's nineteenth century nascence without sacrificing modern comfort. This brick beauty includes elegant nouveau art touches and custom woodwork alongside luxury appliances.

2. HISTORIC WEST BOTTOMS GET-AWAY LOFT In addition to being a popular destination for vintage shopping every First Friday weekend, the Historic West Bottoms is also home to the Rumely Tractor Event Spaces, whose owners operate the Historic West Bottoms Get-Away Loft. Located on the third floor of what was formerly a candy factory, the loft encompasses over 5,000 square feet of space, can accommodate up to sixteen guests overnight, and has a full kitchen. With exposed brick and locally sourced vintage finishings, this elegant loft space is a glamorous backdrop for wedding day photos. The ample open space provides plenty of room for bridal party beautification, and also allows for catered rehearsal dinners and other events. Located just two blocks from its sister event spaces, couples who book the loft in conjunction with their wedding at The Rumely receive a twenty-five percent discount off their stay. The loft is available to all other interested parties on nights it is free, so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s still an ideal location for couples with venues throughout downtown.

The three levels of the home each have their own kitchen, so the entire house can be rented for large groups of around 16 people, but also in floor-level units for smaller groups. The distinct floor levels allow for privacy or the creation of separate domains between parties (groom with his groomsmen and bride with her bridesmaids). Once dressed, the bride and groom can meet downstairs for their first look on the stunning grand staircase or in front of the beautifully tiled fireplace, both being gorgeous additions to wedding day photos.

This year will unfold a variety of wedding trends, some brand new to the scene and others as imaginative versions of that we saw introduced towards the end of last year. Here are the top ten wedding trends in Kansas City:

1. Customized Invitation Suites Say goodbye to cookie-cutter invites and hello to custom invitation suites. From colors to themes, there are so many options when creating an invitation's design. With so many talented artists in Kansas City, it is easy for you to work hand-in-hand, and even in-person, with a designer to develop a look that is unique to you and the style of your wedding. Whether you’re in search of simple and understated, or bold and colorful, there is a perfect design to be created for ever couple. The geode-inspired suite above was created by YellowBrick Graphics.

With the rise of sharing personal experiences on social media, guests cannot wait to be the first person to post about your wedding, sometimes before you have even exchanged vows. Therefore, couples are kindly asking guests to unplug during the ceremony. Deanna Johnson, owner and photographer of A Day to Adore Photography says, “I think guests should be fully present in the moment instead of hiding behind a screen. It helps out the photographers because it allows us to focus on anticipating our next shot without worrying about someone getting in the way or having large distracting screens pop up in the photos.” It’s not rude to ask for technology to be put away at the ceremony, but don’t risk being labeled a “stuffy” couple. Welcome back in the use of social media at the reception by incorporating a fun hashtag or geo-filter for guests to tag and use throughout the evening. For some couples, having a large wedding surrounded by 200 guests is a scary thought. The anxiety of having to plan for the food, décor, accommodations, etc. can become overwhelming and seem insignificant next to the importance of exchanging vows. Additionally, budget conscious couples are nervous of the expense that comes with hosting a large number of guests for dinner and an evening of entertainment. More and more often, eloping has become the way for couples to release themselves from the pressure of a large wedding to solely focus on their ceremony. With just a few people on a mountaintop in Colorado, on the beaches of Florida, on in a backyard oasis, intimate and meaningful vows can be exchanged, a life-long commitment forged.

For so long, the groom’s attire has taken a backseat to modern style and trends. Last year we saw a slight adaptation in light grey and navy suits, but that will just be the beginning as this trend continues to unfold. Jewel-toned suits, such as burgundy or emerald, have been a trendy addition for style-worthy weddings. Stand out tie designs have also become popular in various floral designs, colors, and fabrics, such as velvet. Remember the days when the men wore silly socks, only to pull them out for one photo and then tuck them away for the rest of the day? Yeah, those days are gone. Groom and groomsmen are now welcomed to add their personal tastes and touch to their attire.

5. Ordained Loved Ones While planning a wedding, one of the big decisions to be made is who will preside over the ceremony. Instead of immediately turning to a preacher or priest, couples have started asking their close friends and/or family members to get ordained to officiate their ceremony. “Couples are trending towards a wedding that is a unique reflection of them, and who is officiating plays such a large role in that!” says wedding planner Rachael Whitehead of Whatever is Lovely Events. Having someone that knows both the bride and groom personally relaxes the stiff formality of the traditional ceremony and allows for a more unique story to be told. EABride.com

6. Having Some Serious Fun with Florals Florists have taken on the role as artists for their couples and continue to push the limits of creative design with floral installations. Free-standing altars, suspended arrangements above the head table, and statement floral walls are just the beginning of this trend. Kansas City florist, Ferrell Richardson, from The Cottage Rose explains, “Arbors will always be popular, but we are seeing a shift into more freeform compositions without the use of a built structure.” The nature of the installation, coupled with the chosen greenery and blooms, help to give couples a unique way to express their personal style on the wedding day.

7. Unique Signage Acrylics have been a hot trend for ceremony welcome signs, reception seating charts, and even as invitations over the past year. But laser-cut wood and neon signs are going to make a big splash in the wedding décor realm. Hand lettering artist Lauren Heim, of Lauren Heim Studio says, “Couples love to have wooden signs designed with their last name or a fun word/phrase.” The signage is used on the head table, or even as a guest book, and then later incorporated into their home décor after the wedding day. For something a bit more eclectic (and electric), a neon sign is the way to go, and we have them here right in Kansas City! Carolyn Campbell-Schwartz, owner of Ultrapom Event Rental notes that “neon signs are picking up steam, and there is so much potential to incorporate them into floral backdrops; something that is just now being seen on the West Coast.”

Frosted in white buttercream with piping around its tiers, the wedding cake has been a traditional wedding element that has stood the test of time. But even the oldest of traditions have to get revamped, and the wedding cake is getting a total makeover this year. Chrystal Traner, the owner and cake artist of Petals & Pastries notes, “I’m finding more and more brides no longer want dessert tables, instead they want a big statement wedding cake.” Cakes have become an artistic staple piece of the reception with designs incorporating bold colors, asymmetrical tiers, and dimensional frosting. And while the outside is so stunningly beautiful that you don’t want to cut into it, the inside flavors will leave you with no other option but to indulge. Chrystal mentions that her couples are straying away from white cake and choosing more unique flavors such as berry compotes, cookie butter, creamy chocolate, emulsified buttercream, and citrusy zests. Um, yes please.

8. Cake as Art

10. A Custom Bar Experience There are so many different ways to customize the beverage service at your reception, so why settle with something standard? From specialty drinks, to champagne bars, and beverage trucks alike, there is always a way to add some fun to the guest’s experience. Additionally, couples are choosing beverages that they enjoy to drink (craft beers, specialty cocktails, theme related names, etc.) breaking their guests away from the BudLight standard. Katie Currid, owner of Kansas City’s very own Prosecco Truck, Fizzolino shares, “Most of our brides are huge fans of Prosecco, so then they try to balance that out with something fun that the groom likes. We receive a lot of inquires for specific types of beer that represents the couple, instead of just having something that’s a crowd pleaser.”

9. Food Focused A more casual dining experience has led way to creative food stations and food trucks – giving couples the chance to create a custom menu and dining experience for their guests. Mary Green, owner of Marigold’s Food Truck talks of her wedding serving experience, “Some couples are all about the total truck experience, complete with cute little paper boats. Others like to mix it up with a plated salad before hitting the truck window.” EABride.com

BACK TO THE BASICS OF BUDGETING

Establishing a budget, and where you are willing (and are not willing) to compromise, is the most important first step in the wedding planning process. Many couples have big dreams for their wedding, but fear that their budget will be the factor that keeps them from achieving it. And as a fun fact, the average Midwest wedding ranges anywhere from $15,000-$35,000. The internet is full of budget breakdowns, but each one is a little different from the next, so take the time early in your planning to create and customize your very own budget. So, grab a glass of wine and start jotting down which pieces of the wedding are most important to you, and how much you intend to spend with each vendor. Two ways that you can stretch your budget is to either have a longer engagement or to have a smaller wedding. A long engagement gives you plenty of time to research affordable vendors and to save for the little things that bring your day to the next level. Putting away a little (or a lot) each month will definitely add up over time. With a smaller guest count you immediately save on the bill for catering, bar, and décor, as you won’t be serving and seating as many guests. Narrowing down the guest list to the most important people in your life, guarantees that you will have a more intimate and affordable wedding. The wedding gown is another large expense. One way to save is to be ready to say ‘yes to the dress’ on your first day shopping. Most bridal boutiques offer a first-day incentive, not to rush you, but to help you solidify a decision. There may also be the opportunity to order your gown on a payment plan. Ask your florist to help educate you about the floral options for your wedding season. They can also introduce money-saving alternatives such as varying sizes of arrangements, incorporating candles, and refocusing your bouquet by using a few large statement blooms. Believe it or not, it is possible to determine a budget for your wedding early in your planning and then stick with it as you go. Be realistic in your conversations about how much you are wanting/willing to spend and then do the appropriate research to find vendors within your price range. At the end of the day, you’ve already made the most important decision, to get married. Now you need to decide what you want to remember most from your wedding day (the intimacy of the ceremony, the late-night dancing with friends, or the fun that was had in the photo booth) and budget your preferences accordingly.

Creating a custom gown is a distinctive experience for each and every bride. From flipping through swatches of fabrics, to picking out the types of beads to be sewn onto the gown, every step of the way there is a personal decision to be made that impacts the final design of the dress. With so many silhouettes, necklines, sleeve styles, and train lengths, the options are endless to craft a gown from dream to reality.

It’s a quaint wedding dress shop that specifically specializes in fashioning custom bridal gowns. It’s where owner Cassandra Schwalm sets up shop under the name of Beloved Bridal. When first stepping into Beloved Bridal, it’s immediately apparent that this urban oasis has been the home to some beautiful designs and creations. Hanging delicately are gowns within Cassandra Grace’s two collections: Cassandra Grace and Beloved by Cassandra Grace. Customized is the norm instead of the exception at this bridal shop; so, when trying on gowns with Cassandra, your preferences of style and design are always meant to be heard. Of course, creating a dress, especially one suited to walk down the aisle in, does not happen overnight. To start the creative process, a consultation with Cassandra is needed to discuss the overall look and design of the dress (as well as the intended budget). From there, drawings are made, fabrics are pulled, and decisions move forward. Everything is finalized four months out from the wedding and alterations are made once the gown arrives in store. In-house alterations keep your one-of-a-kind gown in safe hands throughout the final weeks leading up to the wedding. WEDDING WISE Don't hesitate to delegate! People love to help and will go above and beyond for you on your wedding day... so just ask. At the same time, try not to put too much on your mom. We’ve seen the mother-of-the-bride that tries to take on all the responsibilities of the wedding day, and it is physically and emotionally draining. It’s a big day for your mom as well (her little girl is getting married!) and she doesn’t want to miss a thing. I know it’s easy to trust your mother because she will try her hardest to make everything perfect. But trust me, having her focus on just you will give you both a lifetime of memories.

When searching for venues, keep in mind that your estimated head count and actual guest list count are likely to be quite different. Don’t be deterred if the venue’s maximum capacity equals your guest list number, because it is very rare for every single guest that has been invited to actually attend. This is true and standard for nearly every wedding. There’s no doubt that your friends and family love you dearly, but life is busy and unpredictable, so chances are that not everyone is going to be able to make it. 10 Things Do For A Killer Wedding Day 1. When gathering your guest list, remember that your wedding doesn't have to be huge to be memorable. Inviting quality relationships is best. Be thoughtful but not guilt-driven. And if some people can't make it, remember you'll still be friends and you'll have great pictures to show them. 2. Invite your family and friends to more than just the wedding itself... especially if you're all traveling more than an hour outside of the area. Setting a weekend itinerary is a great way to help everyone feel involved and that you created space and time for great conversation outside of the hectic wedding day. 3. Plan out your itinerary for the day with your planner or your photographer. They can help you set a realistic timeline of the day to allow enough time for pictures without keeping everyone waiting too long. A first look ahead of time is best and a typical reception lasts about 4-5 hours. 4. If people want to help you with your wedding day, give them specific tasks ahead of time so you're not overwhelmed the day-of with hundreds of questions. Make a master list of everything needed and email it out to everyone the week of, then keep a few paper copies handy for the rehearsal/wedding day. 5. Hand over the reigns and let someone else (who is amazing but not your mom) take over so you can relax and enjoy your big day. 6. If you want your wedding pictures to be fantastic, book a breathtaking venue with countless photo options! Then, of course, book a talented photographer. 7. Two photographers is always better than one. And if you have the budget for a videographer. Do it! 8. Have activities for your guests to do like yard games, photobooth, bonfire with s'mores, something to fill out/read, guestbook, past pictures to look at, etc. Your coworkers don't usually know your family or your childhood friends, so these activities will keep the awkward conversations to a minimum.

There are so many decisions – both big and small – that all come together to create a wedding celebration that perfectly represents your love story. A major key to telling that story is your wedding photographer. Think about it: after the cake is cut, you’ve danced your final dance, and the last gift is unwrapped, the only thing left after your wedding day are your photos. Photos you’ll love, cherish, and want to proudly display in your home. Photos you’ll show your future grandchildren! And that’s why it’s so important to find the right photographer (and photography editing style) to capture your love story. Before you started planning your wedding, you may have thought there isn’t much difference between wedding photographers besides their pricing. Maybe you already knew light & airy and dark & moody were distinct editing styles (thanks to Instagram) but not much beyond that. In reality, there are many different photography approaches and editing styles to choose from. Each of them evokes different moods and emotions and pair well with different wedding themes. 54 56

DARK & MOODY Key Features: Dark and moody images highlight darker shadows and deeper colors (think gem tones). They give off cinematic vibes and are often described as “brooding and romantic”. FILMY MATTE Key Features: Filmy matte photos are digital images edited to look like film photos. They feature bright whites, cool (blue-y) greens, and luminous skin tones. Why this style: “I’m a digital photographer but have always been drawn to the film-inspired look. There’s something about the “cleanness” of this style of photography that I love. Since starting my photography journey, my style has evolved, but my core principles haven’t. These principles have given my photography a classic, consistent style that both my clients and I love.” – Angie Scott, Angie Scott Photography

DESATURATED ELEMENTS Key Features: In these types of photos, certain colors (often primary colors) are desaturated to draw the focus away from them, allowing other elements of the image to stand out. Why this style: “Coming from a background in fine art, I look at my work within the context of art history. As a painter and drawer, I frequently work in a reduced palette of earth tones. The limiting of one's palette is a conscious choice today, but this method dates back to eras when painters were not able to access pigments to create "strong colors". My attraction to muted tones comes from a personal romantic notion of time's presence; within relationships we see this manifested as the weight of our personal pasts, and the hope we have in love moving forward into marriage.” – Juliana Noelle Jumper, Juliana Noelle Jumper Photography

DETERMINING YOUR STYLE Each of these photography editing styles speaks to people differently. Some are drawn to brighter images, while others gravitate to more subdued color palettes. Thankfully, the odds are very good that there’s a photographer out there that fits your personal style and needs. Now that you have determined the type of photography style that you most want to capture your wedding day, you’ve made your decision a little less daunting! While searching for the right photographer, ask yourself these three things. A photographer’s editing style is only part of what makes them the perfect photographer for you. Knowing your posing preference and finding a photographer that fits your personality will help make your big day run smoother and more relaxing for you, which will help capture the best possible moments on your wedding day!

planning ASK THE EXPERT:

Q: My venue is only giving us access to the space 4 hours before the start of the reception and at that time we will already be at the ceremony venue. How do I navigate the logistics of setting up the space? I don’t want my loved ones to have to miss the ceremony to go set up centerpieces! Help! A: Yikes! The last thing you want is your loved ones hustling around and missing the whole point of your wedding day you getting married! Thankfully, there’s no need to panic. Start by finding out what services your vendors will provide that could cover the setup. A full-service florist will place each centerpiece, handle any installations, and work side-by-side with your catering team to style the tables. Next, find out how much setup your caterer will be handling with their service staff. Often times, they will be setting all the place settings, folding napkins and lighting candles. Ask if the venue provides a manager that can help with small setup, and always ask if you can you can drop off personal items a little early. Placing details on the gift table, setting out guest favors, or distributing personalized cocktail napkins to all the bars are small timesavers that can make a difference later. However, the best coverage to ensure all of these details turn out just how you are hoping, is to hire a coordinator. Even if you are not working with a full-service wedding planner, you can greatly benefit from hiring a month-of coordinator, or wedding day manager. They will be your eyes, ears, and hands while you are walking down the aisle!

Q: We are having a difficult time deciding if we should purchase the alcohol for the reception ourselves or hire a service to do it. We would save on the initial costs, but I’m not sure it is worth the hassle. 60

A: If you have the budget for it, hire a professional service. Yes, if you are a DIY bride and feel confident that you have the time and attention to give to this added task, it will save you some money. But I will always tell my clients to pay for the professional services that they are least versed in themselves; your time and sanity are the most valuable commodity that you can’t get back! When you hire a bartending service, they know the proper quantities to purchase based on your head count, length of reception, and style of bar. (Are you just having beer and wine, any specialty cocktails, upgraded wine service to pour with dinner?). Now you’ll have one more expert on your team to answer questions and put your mind at ease.

Q: Our reception is going to be a casual, family-style meal. We just want everyone to feel comfortable and enjoy a big party, do I need to make a seating chart? A: Most often, the answer is ‘yes’, you need some form of seating assignments. The exception to this would be if you have fewer than 75 guests and/or if your seating is equally as informal (long farmhouse style tables with benches). Keep in mind that guests feel most comfortable when you remove any of the uncertainty of attending a large event. No one wants to miss a queue, or feel like they don’t have a seat to sit with their friends.

Q: Who is typically invited to the rehearsal dinner? I’m having trouble knowing where to draw the line. A: If you want to stick with tradition, your guest list will only include your wedding party and their dates, immediate family, and your officiant and spouse. But if you are the ‘more-the-merrier’ type, modern rehearsal dinners now include guests who have traveled from out-of-town to attend the wedding and arrive the day before. With this trend, rehearsal dinner numbers can approach the full guest list of the reception if a lot of your guests are from out of town! In comes the "Welcome Reception", a great middle ground. Traditional couples that are trying to keep an intimate (and more budget friendly) rehearsal dinner, will stick with the tight-knit group for the meal, and then host a cocktail party immediately following the dinner. This invite is extended to all out-of-town travelers and whoever you wish to invite! It’s a casual gathering encouraging guests to come and have a drink with the bride and groom, wishing them luck before walking down the aisle. Let the festivities begin!

Q: How does tipping vendors work - am I supposed to do that the evening of the wedding or do I do it later after the day has passed? I just don’t want the service staff to not get tipped if I end up handing it over to the business owner. A: Handling the tipping by the end of the night is appropriate and appreciated. Prompt delivery is helpful for the servers and bartenders, or if you have a band. Even if the manager or owner will distribute, it’s easier for them to deliver the gratuities that night while everyone is there. Also, be sure to let the manager know that you plan to tip the service staff, ensuring that tip jars are not set out on the bars. FROM THE BRIDE Be picky; going to meet different vendors is a chore, but necessary! Don’t settle for anything and make sure that you absolutely love it because you only get one day and you want for it to be perfect. Planning your own wedding can be done, but at least hire a day-of coordinator, it will make your life so much easier. Allow for a larger chunk of money to be spent on your photographer. Yes, it can be expensive, but these are the only photos you will have to remember this day. This was my number one priority. - Sara My advice would be when people ask if you need their help, say YES! I was so set on doing everything by myself. So many friends and family offered to help and I always said no. Even something as simple as stuffing invitations, I should have utilized all of our loved ones willingness to help. I think it would have taken a lot of pressure off of me. - Mindy Some advice I would give is to learn what is most important to you for your wedding, so that you know what to spend money on versus what not to spend money on. You definitely don't have to splurge on every little detail, but there are certain things that are worth investing in. One of the things I believe you should invest in – a photographer! That is something I can confidently say you WILL NOT regret spending your money on. After your wedding you only have a few things left – your new marriage and your memories. The only way to relive your memories is through photos, so it’s more than worth it to invest in a photographer who shares your aesthetic and vision! Lastly, it’s not worth stressing about every single detail, because you probably won't even notice them your wedding day. Don’t sweat the small stuff, it’s not worth it! - Kayla

As you begin hiring professionals, be sure to trust your vendors - they’re experts and know how to execute a wedding more than you do. And don’t try and incorporate every cute trend you see on Pinterest and Etsy. Focus on the essentials and, if you have plenty of time, add on from there. The goal should be to eliminate pre-wedding stress, not add to it. -Kayla Try to enjoy your engagement for as long as possible before starting the wedding planning. Things will come together, but you only get to be engaged and not stressed out for a short period of time. -Julia

FROM THE GROOM My advice to engaged couples would be to stay true to who you both are and what brought you together. And always remember and know the importance of communication. Don’t hesitate to tell each other how much you love them or appreciate them along with why you feel that way. During the stressful times, don’t be afraid to take a break from planning and do something enjoyable together. Taking breaks will help you get through those times together, which is why you have each other as that unbreakable support system. Every couple wants to ensure that their bridal party will have a great time at their wedding. Beyond a well-stocked bar and a killer DJ, here are six simple ways to help your bridal party enjoy your wedding:

Ask them to be a part of your wedding early in the planning process.

You will want your bridal party to be present for your engagement shindig, wedding dress shopping, bachelor and bachelorette parties and any number of other important milestones in the months and weeks leading up to your wedding. By “popping the question” early in the planning process, you affirm their importance in your life and give them ample time to prepare financially and to schedule travel as needed. They will appreciate this courtesy. After all, no one wants to feel like the “back up” bridesmaid.

Communicate their roles and duties to them clearly.

Ask yourselves which responsibilities you will delegate to certain members of the bridal party and make sure to talk through each component with the individual. These might include: • Who will deliver your suitcases to your limo before you leave? • Will your Best Man and Maid of Honor give toasts or speeches? • Will your bridesmaids be paying for their dresses, hair, and makeup on their own in full or in part? • Will your groomsmen be responsible for paying for their suits? • Will everyone need to schedule a fitting appointment by a certain date? These questions may seem a bit exhaustive, but by communicating early and clearly, you will show each member of your crew that you care about them while minimizing the risk of potential misunderstandings. 66

Spend some quality time with each individual before the big day.

While there are many things to do to prepare for your wedding day, don’t forget to slow down and enjoy the process with the people who mean the most to you. Allocate time in your schedule to spend quality time with each person you have asked to stand with you. Although it may be tempting to schedule a few gatherings with the group, or to write off wedding dress shopping as quality time, the truth is that those experiences will be focused around your wedding and will not create opportunity for you to connect on an individual level. Schedule lunch or a pedicure with each bridesmaid. Take each of your groomsmen golfing, catch a game together or meet for a beer. Make it a point to ask questions about their family, their work and what’s going on in their lives. Show them that you care about them and appreciate the time and energy they are committing to make your wedding dreams a reality by expressing an interest in their lives. Time may be hard to come by, but this investment will pay you in dividends on the day of your wedding – and throughout your friendship.

Provide them with a wedding day timeline a few days in advance.

Finalize your wedding timeline with your venue, coordinator and photographer, and then take the time to create a simple copy for your bridal party. Include important details such as: • When bridesmaids should be present for hair and makeup • When everyone should be ready for bridal party photos • Important names, addresses and phone numbers • Approximate time of any important events throughout the day (such as: first look, exchange of gifts, lunch, ceremony time, cocktail hour, etc.) By giving your bridal party a snapshot of the day and providing each person with the important details, you give them the opportunity to relax and enjoy the flow of the day you have planned without stressing about when and where they should be from one moment to the next.

Make sure you have plenty of snacks and drinks on hand for them on the day of your wedding. (Don’t forget

to be mindful of dietary restrictions and food allergies!)

Wedding day timelines often begin early in the morning, and bridal party duties often span 14 hours or more! Be considerate of your people and use the following rule of thumb: If their presence is required before 10 AM, provide breakfast. If their presence is required before 1 PM, provide lunch or brunch. A few excellent low-mess food items to have on hand include: • Fruit • Nuts • Charcuterie trays • Rolls • Bottled water and other bottled drinks

Tell them how much you appreciate them!

Of course, you appreciate them…but do they know you do? In the weeks and months leading up to your wedding, it is easy to lose touch with those you care about. You are juggling the logistics of planning your wedding ceremony and reception, communicating with multiple vendors and planning your honeymoon in addition to dealing with all of the natural stressors which accompany any major life change. Make an effort to express your gratitude and appreciation for their presence, their love, and their contributions toward the wedding of your dreams. A genuine, “Thank you for being here. It means the world to me.” will bring a smile to any face. This simple step will warm their hearts and remind them of why they are such an important part of your big day. By following these six steps, you can be certain that your bridal party will feel loved and appreciated. They will be freed to enjoy every moment of your perfect day – and so will you!

James and I met through his sister (who was, and currently still is, my best friend) when we were 17. It was James’ ability to make me laugh that really seemed to seal the deal! What surprised me about the love between us, was how effortless it was to be ourselves around each other, even at such a young age. A few months after we graduated, we discovered that we were expecting our first child. This brought us even closer. We were young, but prepared to be the best parents we could be. I was about 4 weeks along in my pregnancy when James came home with a bag of Sonic and my favorite fountain drink. He walked through the door of our tiny one-bedroom apartment, got down on one knee and proposed! I was shocked and completely didn’t expect it with us only being 18. Of course, it was a good shock, and I said yes! We had been dating just a little over a year, and while we were still very young, we were very much in love. We decided to take longer than most couples do to get married. We both agreed not to rush anything given our age and the length of our relationship. We didn’t want to feel pressured into hurrying before our son was born just to appease the societal pressure of “marriage before baby”. Fast forward eight years later, and we decided to finally tie the knot. At first, my mom and I started planning the wedding by ourselves, but decided to hire a day-of coordinator so that neither one of us was under any stress on the big day! I found 8th & Main and immediately fell in love with its beautiful courtyard with strung lights and indoor industrial space. I wanted our wedding to be industrial chic and classy, and the space fit the ticket perfectly. The flow of events the day-of were so smooth. The hours leading up to the ceremony flew by while we were getting our hair and makeup done. After the pre-ceremony pictures concluded, people started to arrive, and I began to get antsy. Once the parents and bridal party were called upon to walk down the aisle, I was all by myself. I was so nervous and had uncontrollable butterflies. I will never forget preparing myself to walk down the aisle to my husband, it was such a cool feeling. Everything was so perfect. The day went by fast, but I remember so many special moments, and for that I am thankful.

I'll keep it short and simple - my favorite part of the day, without a doubt, was being able to marry Sara. That is the beginning and ending of it all.

My favorite moment was walking down the aisle. With all of our loved ones in attendance and my handsome husband waiting at the end of the aisle, I was completely overwhelmed with emotion. In that moment, it felt like we had made it; we had surpassed the statistics of being teen parents. We had spent the last eight years of our lives together and was finally making our union and family one. It was one of the best feelings in the world aside from the birth of our children.

SPECIAL PIECES It was really important to me to have something that set our wedding apart. I wanted a wow factor that most people had never seen before at a wedding. What better way to do that then with a fireworks show?! It was definitely one of the biggest pieces of the wedding details for me because it was a special thank you to all of our guests. I’ve heard it was very “Mindy” thing to do something over the top and extra! We also incorporated a little of our personalities with our cake. Tyler and I initially met in college. We never dated and weren’t exactly friends, but we had a lot of mutual acquaintances. After college, Tyler moved to Texas for a few years, which ironically is where I was born and raised. When Tyler moved back to Kansas City he reached out and we agreed to go out on a date. It all seemed to happen really fast. We were both in a place where we were open to finding a special someone to settle down with, and it just so happened we didn’t have to wait for long. Officially, we dated for about two-and-a-half months before getting engaged. I knew Tyler was the one for me when he joined my family on a vacation to Disney World. This was the first time he was meeting my family, and it’s not like it was an hour dinner, this was a family vacation! I loved how comfortable and confident he was with everyone, but what really touched me was how he interacted with my son. My son was only 14 months at the time, and taking a toddler to Disney World isn’t exactly a breeze. Tyler stepped up and helped me with him so much. His loving heart is so big and when I saw this, I immediately knew it was the heart for me. I anticipated a proposal around the holidays because we had picked out some aspects of the ring together, but I had no idea of when it would happen. Tyler had gotten a new job, so we decided to go out to dinner on the Plaza to celebrate. Looking back, there were so many moments that would have been perfect for a proposal, including during dinner or the horse-drawn carriage ride Tyler surprised me with, but nothing happened. Then at the end of the night, he asked if I wanted to take a picture in front of a fountain; I said sure, and he told me to sit down. I blacked out from the moment I saw him getting down on one knee. I don’t even know if I let him finish asking me to marry him before I said yes! I wanted our wedding to be romantic, while also classic and intimate. We chose all neutral colors with pops of greenery for a timeless look. Our venue let us have access to their gorgeous house the evening before we got married, so it turned into a slumber party with our wedding party and closest friends! I served up a “thank you” breakfast the morning of the wedding day for all that had spent the night with us. It was the perfect beginning to a day that only got better as it went on!

It is hard to say that one moment was my favorite part of our day; but the ceremony stands out a little more than the rest. After I made it down the aisle, I turned around to see all of our friends and family's faces. It was so meaningful to see everyone there. Daniel and I met at a bar. It was hardly romantic, but it was pretty wild that we were both there at that exact same time. We both have weird work schedules, so the fact that we were both out on a random Thursday night, at the exact same location, was pretty crazy. My friend and I wanted to step outside for a moment, so we asked Daniel’s friend, Brett, to save our seats for us. We came back in to find out, in fact, that he had not saved our seats at all. Daniel immediately swooped in with a smooth move and said that he had saved a table for us instead and gestured to an open table in the corner of the bar. I didn’t fall for it, but thankfully my drunk friend and amazing wing-woman, Marge, made an immediate move to the table and we all sat down together. I told Daniel he looked like Ben Wyatt from Parks and Rec and the rest is history. I hate large crowds and public displays of affection, so Daniel really hit the mark with the proposal at home. It was 10pm on a Wednesday, and we had just gotten back from a nice dinner and were drinking wine and listening to music in our living room. He pretended to go to the bathroom (even fake flushed the toilet) and came back to “make a toast” and ended up proposing. It was incredibly sweet and perfect. Almost everyone we knew was already asleep, so we ended up telling the majority of people the next day. I’m a film producer professionally, so the idea of planning my own wedding seemed like a no brainer. I plan massive film shoots every day for a living. It was actually pretty nice only having to deal with myself. I, of course, had tons of help from family and friends throughout the process, but I really didn’t mind taking on the majority of the work. On the day of, I had my childhood friend and amazing wedding coordinator, Abby Church (A Wedding Come True) to make sure that everything ran smoothly. I couldn’t have survived the day without her. I had always planned on having a day-of coordinator and Abby was the best of the best.

Jared and I met at a work party in early 2014; I was only 18 at the time, and he was 20. I had been recently transferred to a different company location, so I was the newbie in attendance and didn’t know anyone at the party. Somehow, I ended up talking to a group of people that included Jared. I didn’t think much of the interaction at the time, but he did, and asked me out a few months later. I immediately friend-zoned him and said no to a date. Over the next year-and-a-half, we developed a close friendship, even despite his countless attempts to ask me out. If Jared was one thing, he was persistent! During our friendship, it became clear that Jared would be an amazing partner. He’s compassionate, funny, selfless, polite, thoughtful, fun, thinks tomatoes are gross – all the qualities I was looking for in a lifelong relationship. Why not give him a shot? We made our relationship official on December 30th, 2015, almost two years after we met. Ever since that day, I’ve never looked back. During our 20 months of dating, I fell in love with someone I never thought I would end up with. I always thought I would end up with some hipster-like boyfriend who played the guitar and loves coffee, but instead I snagged a computer nerd who loves motorcycles, video games, and camping. I fell in love with Jared’s ability to put others first, his unwavering support for me, his sense of humor, and his smile. A shared hobby Jared and I have is escape rooms. We love solving the puzzles and riddles using the different clues and hints. We have done eight rooms together with different groups of friends and family. One summer night, my parents and little sisters were in town, which was an extremely rare occurrence. We all planned to do an escape room together since they had never been to one. The room was called “The Hero” at our favorite escape room business, Breakout KC. During the game, Jared stated that he had to leave the room for a couple minutes to use the restroom. I thought nothing of it; I was too busy decoding the puzzle. Little did I know, he was preparing for one of the most nerve-wracking moments of his life. After successfully completing the escape room, we all gathered into the foyer for a picture. While we were getting set up, Jared quietly slipped away. He returned with a large sign reading “Kayla, will you be my Hero?” (the name of the escape room we just completed). After reading that, I immediately knew what was going on and my head fell into my palms as I started ugly crying. I was crying so hard I barely heard a word of what Jared was saying to me. I know its cliché to say the moment “was a blur” but it really was! I had not one single clue that August 13th, 2017, would be the first step in spending the rest of my life with Jared, and it was even more special that I got to share it with my parents and sisters.

I don’t love being the center of attention (and let’s be honest, Kayla was the real star) but it was a surreal moment to be standing there surrounded by all of our friends and family about to marry the woman I love. After connecting through Match, Josh and I officially met for the first time at Voltaire in the West Bottoms. While grabbing drinks, we took it as a good sign when the bartender asked us how long we’d been together, even though we’d only known each other for about an hour. We knew very quickly that we were meant to be, and our lives blended together so naturally. We moved in together and got our dog, Bowie, in 2016, which definitely helped seal the deal. Josh proposed to me while we were out celebrating my 30th birthday. He rented a romantic hotel room on the Plaza and arranged to propose to me over a nice dinner, but was so nervous about it, that he popped the question once we arrived to the room. We had talked extensively about getting married and I had a feeling a proposal was coming soon, but I was definitely surprised by how sweet and nervous he was in that moment. Plus, he did a wonderful job finding the perfect ring! We’re both very shy, so Josh and I knew very quickly that we wanted to have a private ceremony with only our immediate family. It helped eliminate pre-wedding nerves and definitely made us remember that our wedding day was about our marriage, not the production of the wedding. However, we both come from large families, so we wanted to celebrate with our relatives and friends at a large reception following our small ceremony. We wanted the reception to feel like an intimate, but lively party. Once we decided on Loose Mansion as our venue, a lot of the "heavy lifting" was over in terms of planning and decor. The venue has such a striking art deco feel, that you really just have to lean into it - and we’re glad we did! The staff at Loose Mansion also takes care of a lot of the logistical planning, so my mom, sister, and I were able to easily tackle everything outside of their scope. The day completely flew by in the best way possible. Once I arrived (I was actually late), I put on my dress. We took some photos and then went right into the ceremony. After the wedding, we took some family portraits on the master staircase and then transitioned right into the reception. Every moment was filled with love and laughter. To me, it was the most warm, fun, and beautiful day in the world.

My favorite part of the day was seeing my bride for the first time. There was a lot of anticipation up until that moment, but all nervousness disappeared when our eyes met. I knew that we’d be able to speak soon after not seeing each other all day. I’ll never forget that feeling of solace when I saw her smile.

There was a moment during dinner at the reception that I was holding Josh’s hand and looked out on all our guests. It was so powerful to see everyone who loves us all together for one night of celebration. It wasn’t lost on me how rare and special that was, and I still tear up thinking about it.
