A Letter from the Editor » The fact is simple: I love weddings. For the past eight years, I have been contributing to the realm of weddings as a wedding planner. I have devoted my expertise in timelines, my energy on sixteen-hour wedding days, and ultimately my dedication to ensuring that a couple’s day is everything they hoped it could be. And while there are the unglamorous moments and unforeseen circumstances, there is nothing more satisfying than knowing that I have helped hundreds of couples say, “I do.”

After three years of coordinating weddings, I got the notion that the insight that I was obtaining as a planner would be beneficial to other couples. So, I reached out to EA Bride Magazine. While I hadn’t previously thought of myself as a writer, the objective was to get useful information in front of couples so that they could be best informed on how to go about planning. My first article was published in December of 2012, a mere one page with the title of, “What’s Hot vs. What’s Not.” As I look back now, I realize the importance that this one article would have on my life. The publisher liked my work, and asked me to be a regular contributor. I started pouring out numerous topics, I began to polish my voice as a writer and ultimately became the editor of the magazine in its entirety. As I now take the helm of EA Bride, I have the opportunity to coordinate one last unity: that between the couples of Kansas City and the inspiring wedding professionals that serve as weekend warriors. You see, articles alone only give advice and direction on a topic, and inspiration shoots only give an inside look at what an event could look like; neither have been personalized to fit one’s specific circumstances. Therefore, while I’ll provide these important pieces in each issue to give you a jumpstart, it is equally important for me to highlight the creative professionals that can take your ideas, add some insight, and bring to life the wedding that you envision. As your Editor-in-Chief, I vow to fill our pages with the pulse of the wedding industry, to have the latest trends at your fingertips, the most captivating photography to inspire you, and the greatest group of professionals this city has to offer. You and I are in the same boat here, starting a new beginning in a chapter of our lives that up to this point, has been unchartered. RestoreALTERNATE Balance NOSTRIL BREATHING During my engagement, my world felt precariously tilted on its axis. I was either completely obsessed with planning, believing that every decision had to be made immediately, or I was blissfully ignoring the wedding planning process, choosing instead to be utterly absorbed in my work. My reality had slackened its grip on a balanced lifestyle, something I wholeheartedly endorse as a yoga instructor. My go-to fix was a yogic breathing technique designed specifically to restore balance to the mind and body.

1. Use your right hand. Make a ‘mudra’ of first two fingers extended, other fingers lightly folded in to the palm.

2. Rest the first two fingers lightly between the eyebrows. The knuckle

of the thumb rests lightly on the right-side bridge of nose and the knuckle of the ring finger rests lightly on the left-side bridge of nose.

3. Take 3 cleansing inhales and exhales. 4. On an inhale, apply light pressure to the right side of the nose and inhale through the left side of the nose.

5. On an exhale, apply light pressure to the left side of the nose and exhale through the right side of the nose.

6. Continue alternating the breath in the nostrils for 10 rounds. 7. To finish, rest your hands lightly in your lap. Take 3 cleansing inhales and exhales.

8. Quietly affirm to yourself: “I maintain focus and balance.” 9. Emerge from this practice feeling focused and balanced. Use as often as needed throughout the day.

the impact of extensions As a hairstylist, there is nothing worse then having to tell a bride that her hair dreams are impossible. Thanks to the wonderful world of Pinterest, this is happening more than ever before. Brides will bring in a stunning photo of their ideal wedding day hair only to find out that their hair wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t work for that hairstyle. Typically, the girls pictured on social media have long, thick, beautiful hair. And most of the time, the looks that everyone loves are achieved by using hair extensions. Hair extensions used to be only popular on the red carpet. Now, extensions are becoming more and more common and for good reason. Hair extensions can be used to give you the length youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been hoping for and can add volume and thickness to the length you already have.

Being a hairstylist that specializes in weddings, I have fallen in love with hair extensions. I can now give anyone the Pinterest wedding hair they have always dreamed of. I give my clients with thin hair the confidence boost they need. Extension hair holds curl better than natural hair and can give flat and lifeless locks volume. Two years ago I decided my clients and my brides desperately needed these options. After lots of research and trial and error, I found Natural Beaded Rows to be the best solution.

This method blends with your natural hair more beautifully than any other method I have come across. The amazing part is that it blends with little to no damage to your natural hair. NBR requires no tape, no glue, and no bonds. Removal is quick, easy and does not involve any harsh chemicals or removers. I love this method, and I am confident you will too! The Natural Beaded Row method uses hand-tied wefts. These wefts are more delicate and thinner than machine tide wefts. This allows the wefts to be stacked together without being bulky. The biggest difference with this method is the point of attachment. Some methods require many rows or attachments and affect most of the hair on your head. NBR is the complete opposite. Most clients only require one row, and one row holds 1-6 wefts. This leaves most of the natural hair completely unaffected. This allows me to custom blend colors for a completely blended and beautiful finished product. I suggest that all of my brides consider adding hair extensions to their beauty routine. Honoring LOVED ONES

Determining how to honor your loved ones at the wedding can be a difficult task. You want it to be a visible gesture, yet at the same time personal and a representation of the relationship you shared with them. You may want to share your memoriam with other guests, and in other situations you may want the gesture to remain private and only shared with your closest friends and family. Here some ideas on how you can honor the memory of your loved ones whether it be public or personal in nature.

PERSONAL Incorporate a piece of their wedding dress or suit into your own attire. Wear one of their personal pieces, such as a veil, necklace, bracelet or ring.

Reserve a seat in the front row of the ceremony for your departed friend or family member. Put a single flower on their seat as a way to symbolize their presence.

Put a photo in a small frame to be wrapped around your bouquet.

Have a reserved area in your ceremony program that is dedicated to all of those that have passed.

Once you are in your dress, take a photo of you holding a photo of your loved one in her wedding dress.

Set up a table at the reception with photos, flowers, and a lit candle for all of your guests to see.

Have custom cufflings made with a photo and quote to wear on the wedding day.

Have the band or DJ play one of their favorite songs during the reception.

Carry their hanky with you or wrap it around your bouquet to have handy.

In lieu of favors, make a donation to a cause in honor of your loved one.

Incorporate their favorite flower into the arrangements for the wedding day.

Bring to life one of your loved oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s favorite foods by having the caterer incorporate it into the meal or making it yourself, such as caramel pralines, and handing them out as guest favors.

Grab the others that loved him/her so dearly, such as your siblings, parents and grandparents and take a family photo while holding a picture of your loved one. 24

Brides, lovers of fashion, and wedding professionals alike filled the seats to indulge in the custom gowns of local designers, Katie Lee Custom and Marlo Ford Gowns. The dresses captivated all. From the streamlined satin to the intricately adorned lace, each design was unique and had its own awe-inspiring element. The benefactor of the fashion show was One by One Project, which provides awareness and education about the global and local problem of human trafficking. The organization implements pre-care through victim services, street outreach, survivor care and resourcing. They also partner with the Restoration House of Greater Kansas City to provide healing services, job training and financial planning for local victims of human trafficking. 26

FIRST LOOK vs. NO PEEKING the battle of tradition and the timeline Early in planning, you are going to have a big decision looming over your head that will ultimately determine what your wedding day will look like. And not in a small way, like the positioning of your centerpieces, but in a huge, everything teeters on this decision kind of way. The choice that you will have to make is whether you want to see each other for the first time at the ceremony, as you make your walk down the aisle, or if you would rather have a coordinated first look so you can see each other before the wedding. There are advantages and disadvantages of both, so we want to educate and further help you make the decision that best fits your style. For the longest time, and up until just recently, it was considered bad luck to see each other before the wedding. Back when marriages were commonly arranged by families, the parents of the bride didn’t want the groom to have any opportunity to learn of any flaws in his betrothed. Seeing each other before the ceremony could result in a broken engagement and bring shame to the family. Thus, the superstition was born. And while today we are all allowed to marry our soulmate, instead of in exchange of a plot of land and some grain, the controversy of the bride and groom seeing each other pre-nuptials lives on. If you believe in the superstition, then hands down, don’t start your marriage with a jinx. You can make your decision that easily. But, if you are teetering on the line, then here are some advantages and disadvantages you may want to consider.

If your wedding is taking place in the morning, such as a morning mass or around brunch time, then it would be best to see each other at the ceremony so that you can give yourself a relaxed morning to get ready with your bridal party.

Nerves can get the best of you on the wedding day. And sometimes, the best person that can alleviate those nerves is the exact person that you are trying to avoid.

If your wedding is in the late afternoon or evening, and you have a large bridal party, then you won’t have to start your day in the wee hours of the morning to be ready in time. Waiting to take the majority of your photos at the ceremony and directly following will condense your timeline and therefore, could save money on photography and videography packages.

Your grandparent’s wedding is not your own. Traditions have the ability to influence someone in a negative way. Remembering that this is your wedding and that together you will start your own traditions is the best remedy in knowing you won’t be steamrolled into submission. Unless there is a substantial break of time between the ceremony and the reception, it typically only takes an hour until guests have become restless at the cocktail hour. That being said, you are trying to cram the family formals, bridal party shots, and photos of the two of you into that time frame.

You can rarely find a moment alone during the wedding day. You will constantly be surrounded by family and friends from the first cup of coffee until the last song. Having a first look that is private gives you the opportunity to share a few moments alone and to take in the reality of the day together.

If not coordinated correctly, you may have conspicuous bystanders, such as friends, family and complete strangers watching your most personal moment. Finding a secluded location for the first look is very important.

Reactions are priceless. And if there is ever an emotion that we want to bottle up, it is the look on a groomâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s face when he first sees the beauty of his bride. A first look gives the groom the ability to see and embrace his bride quietly without having an entire group of guests gawking at him. And as always, photographers and videographers are capturing the moment.

If you decide to take photos after the first look, then your dress will most likely show it. After walking in the grass, toting your dress around and hopping in and out of the car, your wedding gown will not be as pristine as if you had just put it on at the church.

The greatest advantage of having a first look is that it helps to release the tension for time on your day. When a first look takes place hours before the ceremony, then there is more time to capture the bride and groom photos as well as the bridal party shots before the nuptials. The only photos taking place after the ceremony is the family formals.

Coordinating a first look makes for a longer day-of schedule. The whole bridal party needs to be ready earlier to start photos directly after the first look. The photographer and videographer teams also have to plan for a longer day of coverage (easily 8 hours), which may impact pricing.

Story’s Soundtrack? Over the years, I have had the great honor of discovering many couple’s music profiles. I have also discovered that each couple’s story is original and their music should be custom tailored to fit their personality and that story. In the movies, music brings each story to life and makes the viewers feel like they have a 3D view into the emotional makeup of the characters. When done right, music can invoke that same emotion in your guests and give them a 3D view into your love story. Here are four questions to ask yourself when searching for the perfect songs for your wedding soundtrack. The goal is to discover your music profile and plan it out so that your music fits your story like a glove.

1. What’s My Style? Remember: this isn’t your grandma’s wedding or your friend’s wedding. This is your wedding! If you were to produce a movie about your life, would you trust a stranger to pick the right music for the soundtrack? Or would you carefully pick the best musical director you could find and select the right music that properly represents your story? Obviously, when comparing the two options, the second solution sounds most reliable. We encourage you to be bold and effectively communicate your style of music to your DJ or band. Think of it this way, if you wouldn’t trust someone else to pick out your wedding dress, then why would you let someone choose the music for the most prominent part of your wedding? As the owner of Remix DJs, it always helps me to know that the songs that we play are hand-picked and carry a special meaning to our bride and groom. Even when a selection may not seem correct or common to me, I have found that if there is a tradition or story behind it, it will always be a big hit.

2. What Kind of Mood Do I Want? While creating your itinerary and planning your order of events for the night, make sure to also consider the mood that you want to convey during each part of the evening. To help demonstrate, let’s focus on one portion of the night: the cocktail hour. Here are a handful of moods and the suggested musical genres that fully encompass them.

Black Tie/Classy:

Start with some classic vocal and jazz. Artists like Frank Sinatra, Miles Davis, Tony Bennett and Nat King Cole

Relaxed/Beachy Feel:

Play some light rock and alternative rock. Artists like Jason Mraz, Beach Boys, Maroon 5, and Jack Johnston

Modern/Cocktail Lounge:

Play some deep and chill house music. Artists like Miguel Migs, Everything but the Girl, Mark Farina and Sam Smith

Rustic/Eclectic:

Yes, sometimes your guests may need a few more drinks to help build some liquid courage, but a group of recognizable songs can be just as effective.

3. Are there any themes or wordplay that I want to incorporate into a specific moment? One of the great tools that we have at our fingertips is the internet. Search engines can help you find an endless amount of songs with specific themes or phrases. If you want a list of songs about marriage or love for your first dance, just search it and see what comes up! Do you want some suggestions for the Father/Daughter Dance, or maybe songs about money for the Money Dances? Just search away! For instance, why not play “Beautiful Boy” by John Lennon for the Mother/Son Dance or play “Whatta Man” by Salt-N-Peppa for the garter toss. The options are endless when it comes to word play or thematic songs. If that’s your style, go for it!

4. Do I need to pick any classics for the dance party or should I only pick songs from my music profile? When it comes to the dance party, this is the one part of the night that it helps to put your guests’ styles in the mix. Even though it is important to make sure your DJ or band plays your favorite songs, make sure to allow them to play a good amount of the classics. This will help get your crowd on the dance floor and ecstatically celebrating with you.

Don’t forget that it’s always a good thing to ask your DJ or band to mix up the genres and to seamlessly flow through different styles of music. That way your guests from young to old will not label the music style of the party and mentally check out. It’s good to keep them on their toes and to keep them guessing. When this is done right, it will keep your guests happy and always asking for more. If anything, you may get one complaint (but this is a complaint that will make you smile), “All night I wanted to take a break and relax, but the music was so good that I never got the chance to sit down.” Now that’s the kind of night that everyone truly wants to enjoy with all of their closest friends and family.

Some are minimalistic with a soft color palette while others are bold and demand your attention. Determining the look of your bouquet will set the style standard and color palette for the rest of the wedding. Therefore, it’s not a decision to make lightly! Use our guidance as you determine what you love and completely loathe. Compare different styles of flowers and narrow down the exact look you want to see in your bunches of buds.

Size Matters

A Dress Meant to Impress

You need to start by determining the size of bouquet that will best compliment your body shape. And yes, size most definitely matters! If you have a petite build, then you don’t want to overpower yourself with too big of a bouquet. A small gathering of flowers will better fit your stature and will ensure that guests can actually see you as you are walking down the aisle. Same goes for the camera, a large bouquet can seem to take over the entire frame and draw in more focus, whereas you want the focus to be on your and your hubby.

After trying on dress after dress and narrowing it down to “the one”, you don’t want your bouquet to outshine or portray a different style than the gown. Consider both the flair and size of your dress when deciding on the style of bouquet.

If you have a normal build, then the bouquet that you carry needs to be larger in size, but still proportionate to your body. A bouquet that is too large or too small for your stature can create an unbalanced look. A small bouquet can make you seem bigger than what you actually are. And in some instances, looks more like a bridesmaid’s bouquet or small centerpiece. Determining the size of your bouquet is the first step in creating its appearance. 34

A form-fitting lace gown pairs well with a small, but loosely arranged bouquet. You will commonly see this duo at outdoor weddings. If you have chosen a flowing ball gown with measureable width, then a compact and classy bouquet would be a perfect match. This is commonly seen at ballroom weddings.

You don’t have to have expensive taste to be drawn toward large and stunning flowers. It is almost as if they draw you into themselves. Oversized blooms easily become the focal point of any bouquet. While bigger blooming stems are typically more expensive, they can make a powerful visual impact and take up a large amount of space that you now don’t have to fill with several smaller flowers.

A unique way to add some flair to your bouquet is by adding a non-floral dimension. Some popular accents that are trending right now are cotton, feathers, and fruit. While not everyone wants to add grapes or cabbage to their bouquet, it can be an innovative way to offer cost-saving alternatives to the typical “flowers only” mentality.

Visual Variances A special way that you can differentiate yourself from the bridesmaids (as if the white dress isn’t enough) is by making your bouquet different in some way. In-Season Savings If you have fallen in love with a particular color palate but don’t particularly care which exact flowers provides that color, then be open to the savings that in-season florals can offer you. Out-of-season flowers can be pricy to have shipped, or could be unavailable all together. Be sure to bring up the topic of in-season options while in your florist consultation, they will be able to suggest alternative price saving options.

Clear Communication When you have decided on the flowers you like and the shades that will compliment your wedding, schedule a time to meet with a professional florist. It is important that you communicate your vision clearly, using both photos and verbal descriptions to convey what you want the arrangements to look like. Be sure to reference the vibrancy of colors you want to see, the desired shape of your bouquet, whether it be round or cascading, and if you want there to be much greenery.

Long time bridal industry expert and wedding gown consultant, Christa Smith, provides solutions to common hurdles experienced by brides. #1: I should take all my bridesmaids together to select their dress.

FALSE Too many opinions can make the process long and stressful. Instead, try taking one girl who is harder to fit. Then narrow the choices down to three dresses before getting the majority opinion. #2: Telling my girls to go buy any dress, in an attempt to be the cool and carefree bride, will make it easier for them.

FALSE Your girls ultimately want you, the bride, to be happy with the dress. Take the pressure off of them. Save them hours of stressful shopping and narrow down the choices before they go shopping. #3: I found bridesmaid dresses online for a really great price, but I’m feeling like it might be too good to be true.

TRUE The bridal industry has issued a “Buyer Beware” alert concerning vendors that are strictly on-line retailers. More often than not, these are scams and the buyer has no recourse when the wrong dresses or the wrong sizes arrive. Sometimes, they don’t arrive at all. FALSE Most designers are aware of the many differing body types in the average bridal party, and offer styles to accommodate each other. Ask your bridal consultant for assistance. They have seen the dresses on all shapes and sizes and can make suggestions unique to your wedding. #5: I should order my bridesmaid’s dresses in a timely manner.

TRUE Your bridesmaid’s time is valuable. You don’t want your girls running around for alterations and accessories at the last minute. Having dresses arrive no later than a month before your big day will ease the stress. #6: Allowing my girls to wear different dress styles, means the colors and fabrics won’t match.

FALSE Bridesmaid designers offer different styles and necklines in the same color and fabric. Narrow down the choice to dresses that come in the color and fabric you want and then let your maids pick the style they are most comfortable in.

#7: My bridesmaid’s dresses will require alterations.

TRUE Most bridesmaid dresses are ordered to the closest manufactured size and they are not cut to your bridesmaid’s exact measurements. Make sure your girls understand this and budget time and money accordingly.

#9: I should be mindful of price, even though my bridesmaids can afford it.

TRUE Be sensitive to budget. Never assume you know how much your girls can afford. If you have caviar taste, offer to pay at least half.

#8: I won’t be able to find a dress for an expectant bridesmaid.

What started as an inspiration shoot soon became so much more for one Kansas City couple. Alexandra from NMG Studios was dying to plan and coordinate a wedding shoot from scratch. At the same time, Town Pavilion was wanting to get some new materials for their digital campaign. So alas, the two started working on a collaborative photo shoot. As NMG Studios worked diligently to pull together the talented professionals to create the look they envisioned, Town Pavilion personally recommended one of their previous couples to be the bride and groom models. This was Angela and Dillon. Angela and Dillon had hosted their real wedding at Town Pavilion. As they planned for the events leading up to the big day, they worked closely with Town Pavilion’s coordinator, Lori. Lori immediately noticed that this couple had a very special bond and that it was going to be a joy working with them. The day finally arrived, Angela and Dillon said their “I do’s,” and spent the night in merriment with their guests. It wasn’t until weeks after the wedding that they learned from their photographer that a quarter of the photos that they had taken ended up being lost. Angela and Dillon were devastated as the photos were lost memories of the most important day in their life. Lori felt horrible. In suggesting that Angela and Dillon take part in the photo shoot, it gave NGM Studios and Town Pavilion the ability to create a wedding atmosphere and give Angela and Dillon the opportunity to relive their wedding. Mind you, invitations weren’t sent out to all of their guests, but every other piece was like a dream. The first item of business was to go shopping. Angela and Dillon met Alexandra and Lori at the Gown Gallery for a personal fitting. As she was jumping in and out of different dresses, Angela noticed the price tag hanging off the side of a particularly gorgeous gown. In astonishment, she announced to the others that this was a dress that she would have never been able to afford for her own wedding. As Alexandra and Lori observed like fairy godmothers, they began describing what the shoot was going to look like. As the topic of a “dancing photo” came up, Angela described the first dance that she had shared with Dillon on their wedding night. As the dress and tux were chosen, and details of the shoot were shared, anticipation for the big day started to build.

The day finally arrived and for the second time Angela was slipping herself into a bridal gown. Alexandra and Lori asked that Angela and Dillon get ready separately; in doing so, they set the stage for a first look. As they met on the grand staircase, Angela tapped Dillon’s shoulder and he turned around to find his bride, who was already his wife, but never more so, his bride.

“They surprised us with our actual wedding song and I immediately got emotional and was taken back to the actual wedding day. It was such a special and unexpected moment.” -Angela The photo and video coverage started immediately, and Angela and Dillon were perfect models with a perfect story. When they were ready to shoot the first dance, Angela and Dillon found their way to the dance floor and waited for the music to start. Alexandra and Lori had remembered the discussion in the bridal store and decided to play the first song that they had first shared as husband and wife. As if the emotions of the preparation and the shoot weren’t already enough, once “Lay Me Down” by Sam Smith started to play, Angela and Dillon were immediately taken back to their wedding day. And now as the story is told, it is one of a modern Cinderella. A couple unfortunately had lost a piece of their wedding, heartwarming wedding professionals granted them the ability to relive the moment, and all that were a part of the shoot became a piece of something good.

What is the big hype with airbrush foundation? Airbrush foundation can work magic on certain skin types. It creates a flawless finish with excellent coverage for redness, blemishes, and other imperfections that you might not want seen on the wedding day.

How is it different from traditional makeup? The application is the biggest difference. Traditional makeup is applied with sponges, brushes, or hands and airbrush makeup is applied using a compressor with a gun. Since the foundation from the airbrush is combined with air, you get a weightless, barely there makeup feeling, while also having great coverage. One thing to beware of when thinking about airbrush is that it can make some people feel “flat”. It covers so well that you loose some of the dimension in your features if you’re not careful. The best way to add dimension back in is with blush on the apples of your cheeks, a little bronzer, plus a natural contour and glow.

Which application is best for me on wedding day? Choosing the right application depends much more on your skin type and texture than what is popular. Most airbrush foundations create a very matte finish which is helpful if you have oily skin. Traditional foundations have different bases (water or silicone) and work better for people with dry or mature skin. The best way to know for sure is to have a trial with the artist you want to use for the wedding day.

Will weather affect how it looks? The weather will change your skin. In the summer you sweat and get oily, during the winter skin is more dry. On the wedding day the best way to ensure that your makeup will look great all day long is to invest in the right products or a professional artist. With the right products and professional application, even if you sweat on the hottest day, your makeup will stay in place for 12-18hrs! 46

How do I know if the stylist I choose is using the right products for my skin? Do your research and ask lots of questions! You will be able to tell the difference between someone who buys their foundations at a department store and a credible artist soon after speaking with them. Make sure that whoever you choose has lots of reviews and will provide you a trial before the wedding day. Some of the good products to listen for are M.A.C. Smashbox and MakeupForever.

Will my makeup last through photos, dinner, dancing and kissing? Yes! When you hire a professional you are making an investment in how you will look for the entire day. Getting your makeup done at 6:00am is no problem! It is like getting a great manicure at the salon versus doing it at home. Your salon manicure will last! While the one you do at your kitchen table chips within a few hours. Great makeup has the same effect. It has a lot to do with the products and even more to do with the process. Applying the foundation in thin multiple layers, using primers, color correcting, and finishing with a spray or powder are all steps in the process that keep your makeup looking fabulous for the long haul!

I have skin allergies and sensitive to makeup. What should I do? There are a few options for you if you are allergic or sensitive to most cosmetics. You can see a dermatologist to get a prescription foundation that will prevent a reaction. If you are sensitive and donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t necessarily break out in hives when you wear makeup, then there are a few more options. Clinique has a very good reputation for being easy on tender skin. I have had some clients bring their foundations with them for me to apply. This will still let you be pampered but give you peace of mind knowing that your skin will be okay throughout the day. All this being said, I have never had any of my brides, mothers, bridesmaids or other clients come to me afterwards and say that they had a reaction or any adverse effects from the makeup I use.

Now I know the difference and what to look for. As the pro, which would you choose if you were getting married? Personally, I would choose traditional makeup. The staying power is incredible when applied correctly. It moves with your skin and helps you look like the most beautiful version of yourself. Mostly though, it is the experience. When you choose traditional makeup there is a more pampering that goes with it! Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s almost like a mini facial when done right!

My tip would be color palette, instead of saying my colors are pink and green. Select shades of pink and shades of green to crest your color palette. Going with a blush to medium pink and kelly to forest greens creates depth and interest throughout the whole event. Some couples look for something more inclusive from their venue, with everything provided in one place from catering to decor. Planning Your Printable Pieces

No planning component is more influential in defining the personality of your wedding more than the printed materials that accompany it. With the average wedding, up to six pieces are designed and used to correspond with guests throughout the months leading up to the wedding. The day of, an additional six pieces could be used to provide additional direction. It is imperative to have each element in place as guests are invited and welcomed at your wedding. Here is a list of the most sought after materials, when they should be designed, and how they should be displayed.

Save-the-Dates

Invitation Suite

The purpose of sending save-the-dates is to inform family and friends that you recently got engaged. Yes, most people will already know of your engagement due to social media, but for the old-timers and those that werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t reading their news feed the day of your online announcement, you can keep them in the loop in this way. While save-the-dates are the first impression that your guests will receive, it traditionally has a more casual touch than the paper materials that come later in planning. Whether you do a postcard-sized design, a magnet, or an online version is up to you. However, the one mandatory inclusion is the chosen wedding date. The more time you can give your guests to plan on attending your wedding, the better. So, begin designing your save-the-dates as soon as you have determined the date of your wedding. If you want to include an engagement photo in the design, then be mindful of allowing yourself an extra month and a half ahead of time to have your photos taken, edited, and returned to you by your photographer. Save-the-dates should be delivered no anywhere from 6 to 8 months prior to the wedding.

The largest collection of printed materials you will design for the wedding will combine to form the invitation suite. These items include: the invitation to the wedding, the RSVP card and pre-addressed envelope, the information card, and the outside envelope to hold it all together for mailing. The invitation suite is the first indication to guests of the formality of the wedding. It is chockfull of information and details for all to know and use as they plan to attend. You should begin pulling together the information, colors, and design of the invitations 4 months prior to the wedding. After final approval, the invitation suite should be printed, addressed, stuffed and mailed out no later than 2 months prior to the wedding.

Invitation: the wedding invitation should reflect the look of your wedding: formal, casual, modern, rustic, etc. It should also include your names, date and time of the wedding, and the venue’s name and address. It is up to your discretion whether to indicate if there is to be a reception following or if it is an adult-only affair. RSVP Card: the RSVP card allows guests to communicate back to you if they plan to attend or not. Be sure to list a “respond by” date so that guests are punctual in returning their reply. Depending on the details decided elsewhere in the planning, you may wish for guests to designate their meal choice for dinner and if they have any dietary requirements. The RSVP card should be accompanied with a pre-addressed and stamped envelope to make it easy for your guests to reply. Information Card: utilizing an information card insert to go along with your invitation is an effective way for you to communicate all other pertinent wedding details to your guests. You could include information regarding hotel accommodations, shuttle service and times, directions to the venue, and your wedding website url. Envelope: to hold it all together is the outside envelope. There are many ways that you can design the colors, font, and even the inside lining to match your wedding’s theme. You want to make sure that a fully completed envelope is weighed at the post office to ensure that you have purchased enough postage.

Rehearsal The rehearsal invitation includes the information regarding the ceremony rehearsal and the rehearsal dinner. This invite would only be mailed to those that need to attend the rehearsal to practice what will be needed of them the following day at the actual wedding. It is polite to welcome their spouse and children to join. The details of the invitation should include the venue, address, and starting time of both the ceremony rehearsal and the subsequent dinner. You should begin pulling together the details and the design 2 months prior to the wedding so that the printed materials are ready to mail out 1 month prior to the big day.

Wedding Day Materials On the wedding day, you will be relaxing with your friends, getting ready to say your vows to your best friend, and celebrating the night away with those closest to you. And all the while, there will be materials that you designed and put together before the big day that will look cohesive to your wedding style and will help everything run more smoothly. All-in-all it depends on the style of your wedding to determine which signs you want to make and others that you want to pass on. Here are some ideas that you can browse from: Guest Book Sign: a traditional sign could read, “Please sign our guestbook” or you can make it more interactive by asking for advice, “Advice and wishes for the new Mr. & Mrs.” Gift Table: it is always best to have a designated table for cards and gifts. Pair your sign with an engagement photo to add a personal touch. Programs: having programs available at the entrance of your ceremony gives guests the insight to the flow of the wedding, the names of the bridal party standing beside you and other details you include, such as an “In loving memory” section or a “Thank you” note. Table Numbers: assigning numbers to each table will allow you to begin arranging guest seating. It also helps caterers with table service and designates special tables for your immediate family. Seating Assignment Sign or Placecards: a large assignment sign or placecards can help your guests locate which table they will be seated at during the reception. Q: We understand the value of having wedding photos taken, but have to admit that we had some initial sticker shock when we started researching local businesses. What makes wedding photography so expensive? A: This is such a loaded question for any photographer to field because the answer is so subjective to the artist. In short, we provide a service that offers an experience during the most important milestone in your life. We take on a great deal of responsibility in making sure that the photographs you receive are perfectly preserved memories to share with future generations. In order to achieve great client satisfaction, most photographers take a select amount of weddings per year. This is so that we can take the time and great care into editing your images. Most photographers strive to publish real weddings in local and national publications. When published, the photographer has an ambassador company endorsing their images. The level of credibility and trust prospective clients will associate with published small business photographers is different than that of someone that is just starting out in the industry. Q: Is it okay if other people take photos while youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re taking photos? A: I love the idea of an unplugged ceremony, just so that I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t capture family members with their phones out as you are walking down the aisle. Flashes on other cameras and cell phones can often times be caught by the photographer during memorable times such as the cake cutting. True story: I had a couple re-do their cake cutting when I noticed that a guest had been taking photos behind me using their flash, causing me to cast a shadow onto the newlyweds. It is a huge distraction to see other camera equipment including phones present when the moments matter most. Ask your guests to simply enjoy the celebration! Q: During a consultation with my caterer, I was asked how many vendor meals I will be needing. I had not thought about this before, so since they brought it up, I was wondering what the etiquette is in providing food for my photographer. I certainly donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to be rude and neglect them! A: This is an excellent question! The etiquette is to provide a meal for all of your vendors. Before I became a photographer, I was a catering manager for a midwest grocer company. If you want your photographer and other vendors to perform their best on the day of your wedding, take care of them (and their stomachs), and they will be in better shape to take care of you!

Q: What are the most important things to consider when determining the number of hours and photographers needed on my wedding day? A: Always consider the logistics of your wedding day. If your wedding ceremony starts at 1 pm, and the reception does not begin until 5 or 6 that evening, you will most likely need a package that covers the majority of the day. When meeting with a photographer for the first time, they will provide a quote for the amount of time they think will be necessary to fit your needs and your requests. One thing that helps with efficiency is scheduling a first look prior to the ceremony. This allows more time for photos and makes family photos painless. The typical hour I was always given between ceremony and reception in my first years as a wedding photographer was never quite enough time. I always point my couples in this direction so that I can under promise and over deliver. Last, have your photographer start when you are finishing up hair and make-up, and leave shortly after the DJ starts the party. Q: Can we edit the images given to us by our photographer? A: No, and here is why: professional photographers have spent their career perfecting their craft and style to make their work unique. When hiring a professional portrait or wedding photographer, you are trusting them with your day and to capture it in an artistic way that is true to their style and vision. When hiring us, we assume you love our posing and editing style and would be crushed to see a social media filter distorting our hard work. Q: I have decided to not hire a wedding planner, but am a bit concerned with how the day will flow. Is that something my photographer would determine? A: I strongly recommend a wedding planner to brides planning a wedding. I have always said that planners and photographers have the hardest jobs when it comes to weddings. Many might see a coordinator as an unnecessary expense, but it makes the biggest difference to both you and your vendors. Typically, the responsibilities of coordinating the majority of the day fall back on the photographer if there is not a planning service in the mix. Your photographer should be focused on capturing memories, and a planner should be working closely with the bride and groom to make the day as enjoyable as possible.

Q: I am planning a destination wedding, but have fallen in love with a local photographer. What is the expectation in payment and fees if I should ask this photographer to travel with us? A: I’m so glad you asked! There are huge advantages to hiring a wedding photographer locally when planning a destination wedding. Many brides probably don’t realize it, but the photography options that come with resort wedding packages may be more costly than flying your local photographer in for your wedding. Also, when working with a coordinator at a resort or hotel, they may not know who will be photographing your wedding until the week of the wedding. Most photographers love to travel. All you have to do is ask and the answer will most likely be “yes.” Be prepared to pay for airfare or mileage roundtrip, a hotel room, and meals while your photographer is actively working with camera. In most situations, the photographer will create a custom package for you that includes travel expenses. Q: What is the typical amount of time it takes to get my photos back? A: The editing timeframe for each photographer is different, but a typical turnaround is anywhere from four to eight weeks. Albums and other products that you order could take longer to receive. You hear it all the time during the planning process, “Your wedding day will go by so fast”. And, unfortunately, it’s true. It was the fastest day of my life. Try to remind yourself to slow down and take it all in. If you plan your own wedding, like I did, it’s even harder to not be sidetracked by the planning/decorating mode and to sit back and take it in. There’s things I didn’t remember happening until getting our photos and video back. Which brings me to my next point, invest in a fantastic photographer AND videographer. It’s truly all you have left after the event takes place and it’s completely worth it to be able to relive your day through photos and video. -Leah Do your best to sneak away with your husband for at least one moment with no one else around and just take everything in. Look around and remember why you are there and how all the people in attendance are there to celebrate your love. -Hannah You have to go into your wedding knowing that something will go wrong and that it’s ok. Minutes after putting on my wedding dress it ripped. I wanted to cry and be upset but I knew that wouldn’t help anything, I brushed it off and later had someone sew the hole back up and no one even knew. Things will go wrong, but how you handle them is up to you, you can’t let them ruin your wedding day. The only thing I would have done differently would be to take care of all the small details earlier in our engagement, don’t wait until the last minute to finalize everything. -Brittain 82

We d d i n g W i s d o m f ro m N e w l y w e d s A year seems like a long time, but it isn’t. I wouldn’t change our engagement length but I wish we would have slowed down to really enjoy every planning moment. We saved a lot of projects until the last few weeks, due to travel and many other events. That created a lot of unnecessary stress right up until the wedding. I would have to say, enjoy it because it goes so fast; the engagement, the planning and the wedding day. It’s hard to believe that we have already been married four months now. The other thing that I worried about on our wedding day was how everyone else was doing. It’s how I’m wired, but if I could do it over, I would take a deep breath and try not to worry about things. Some things will go wrong, some people will not show up, but it’s about the two of you and this new family that is forming; so enjoy it! -Cara Let others help you! I had difficulty giving some tasks up, as I wanted to be able to take care of it all. Although it is not impossible to do just that, it is difficult and exhausting. Many of the decoration elements we used, such as the centerpieces, signs, etc. were all DIY. -Bridgette Hiring a great photographer is extremely important because you will look back at those pictures for a lifetime, and every time you look at those pictures, the best memories of your life will come rushing back. I would have spent less time on the small details. The end result is going to be the same. You are going to be married to the love of your life and when it is all said and done, that is really all that matters. -Whitney

It is easier said than done, and near impossible when you’re in the thick of wedding planning, but don’t stress about the details! It all comes together in the end. No wedding goes without flaws, things will not go as planned, but remember that you are the only person who will realize it! Your guests don’t care if your flowers aren’t the color you had envisioned, or if the music wasn’t what you had in mind. I remember when I was stressing out about my wedding dress (I had narrowed it down to 2 and had a hard time picking), a good friend told me, “None of your guests will know what you didn’t choose.” So even though we are our own worst critics and agonize over these details, no one else will ever know the difference. It was something I had to keep reminding myself of throughout the process. If I could do it over again, however, I would budget for a wedding planner. We were sure we didn’t need one and luckily our sister-in-law stepped in during the last month to help out (we really couldn’t have done it without her), it would have made the planning process much less stressfull, especially for brides that are planning their weddings from out-of-state! -Alisa My advice to other newlyweds would be decide on the top five things you just have to have at your wedding. Is it a designer gown? Is it your dream venue? Is it top-notch food (my personal pick)? That really helps you narrow down where you will splurge and where you will DIY or cut corners! -Michaela Don’t be afraid to break all the rules. If you don’t love an aspect of a traditional wedding, then don’t do it! For example, we had no bouquet/ garter toss or wedding cake and not a soul complained. Instead we still hear from people about how beautiful and special the experience was and that it was their favorite wedding! Ian and I met while I was attending the University of Kansas in Lawrence and he was stationed at Fort Riley in Manhattan. We had mutual friends that decided to throw a Halloween party in Manhattan. They told me before the evening started that I had to meet Ian because he was the male version of myself. Ian was supposed to be deployed to Afghanistan that very week but his orders got cancelled and he was able to join the party. He arrived dressed as Alex from “A Clockwork Orange.” Halloween is my favorite holiday, so I loved how he got into character and even went so far to apply false lashes on one of his eyes! We didn’t get to talk much during the party but were the last two standing that night, which opened a window of opportunity. We started talking and found out we had a lot in common. He was very charming and genuine. That night was the first time I had ever kissed a man with fake lashes on. After that Halloween night, we dated long distance for three wonderful years. We decided to spend my 24th birthday in Kansas City. Ian made plans for us to go to Loose Park since they had a pretty rose garden currently in full bloom. Afterwards, we had plans for dinner on the Plaza. Looking back, I should have known it was being set up for a proposal, but I honestly didn’t have a clue. It turned out to be oddly hot for a fall day, and Ian was wearing a wool sports jacket (to hide the ring box). I know he gets hot easily, so I was confused on why he insisted on wearing it the entire walk. We came to a bridge with a beautiful willow tree in the background. He stopped and was quiet for a moment. He then dropped to one knee. I started crying while he said, “Hannah Renae Mitchell, you have been the light of my life and I want you to continue being my light. Will you marry me?” Of course, I said yes! We decided to have a year and a half engagement and were able to live together for a year of that, which was wonderful! We both wanted a small intimate wedding. We ended up having around 80 guests, all immediate family and close friends. We are both laid back and enjoy the outdoors, so we loved the barn idea. Our wedding was rustic, intimate, chic, with a dash of boho. What made our wedding truly unforgettable was the band and fireworks show! Our wedding and honeymoon was the most amazing experience we could have ever dreamed of. It was truly the happiest day of our lives!

special pieces The diamond in my ring had been carried in our family for a very long time. My mom gave Ian the ring when she came to visit us in Texas. She was hugging me goodbye, took it off her finger, and handed it to Ian without me even noticing. After receiving the ring, Ian had the diamond reset and learned from the jeweler that it is an old European cut diamond. The history and familiar family connection to the diamond means so much to me.

My favorite part of the day was when we got to share a quiet moment together in the barn directly after being announced as husband and wife. We exited the ceremony to “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” and made our way directly to the barn. The emotional feeling is somewhat indescribable, but we both knew that what we were feeling in that moment was magical.

We first met in the summer of 2003 at our hometown festival. I was going into eighth grade and we “dated” for about six months, totally middle school style. We stayed in touch and dated again during the summer of 2005, for which we have been together since. In total, we dated for over 10 years before becoming engaged. We enjoyed weekend trips to Kansas City to go shopping and have a fun night out in the city. We were usually accompanied by our close friends, who eventually became our matron-of-honor and best man. It was just another weekend getaway, or so I thought, that turned into one of the best weekends of our lives. We arrived on Friday night and walked around the Plaza, as it was December, and beautifully lit up with Christmas lights. Behind the scenes, Tyler and (best man) Alex were trying to find the perfect spot for the proposal to take place. Nothing on Friday seemed just right. Saturday night, December 12th, 2016, we all ventured to Crown Center where the large trees were beautifully lit. As I started getting a panorama of all that was around us, Tyler got down on one knee behind me. As I made my way around with the picture, there he was, asking for my hand in marriage. I was speechless. I don’t even remember letting him speak as I immediately cried and hugged him all at the same time. One of the best parts, was that my future matron-of-honor, had no idea that the proposal was planned and was just as shocked and tearful as I was. We celebrated the engagement for the rest of the weekend. Planning for the big day started immediately. I made a board on Pinterest and began pinning endlessly. The venue was already decided on, as I had previously fallen in love with the space while attending previous gatherings. With the venue in the country, and surrounded by trees, a rustic and vintage theme seemed the most appropriate. Aside from working full-time and graduate school full-time, Tyler and I managed to plan the wedding ourselves along with help from family and friends. Luckily, our ceremony and reception was held at the same location and we were able to set up a day before. This was extremely beneficial as the day-of we were not rushing around last minute, but instead could relax and take in all of the events that were to come. Our big day, October 22nd, 2016, had finally arrived! The girls arrived at the venue bright and early to begin hair and make-up, and, of course, enjoyed some mimosas! After we were all ready, boys included, we had our breathtaking first look, which was such an emotional moment. The time came and guests began to arrive with our ceremony beginning at 4:30pm. Right after the ceremony, we had a cocktail hour for the guests while Tyler and I enjoyed pictures. Delicious barbeque was for dinner followed by our first dance, father/daughter dance, which was a fun choreographed routine, and an open dance floor for all to enjoy. We literally danced the night away! Our special day was absolutely perfect and we would not have changed a thing. 94

The first look was like a fairytale. I waited. I was nervous, anxious and excited all at the same time. I was told to stay turned around until she touched me on my shoulder. Shane and I met through work. He nonchalantly kept coming into my office every morning and even though I am not a morning person, I never seemed to mind. He always seemed to start my day off on the right foot and was the only one I wanted to have a conversation with first thing in the morning. Shane and I share a love for sports. I am a huge Kansas Jayhawk fan and he is a big Texas Longhorn fan. He played baseball at the University of Texas and then went on to play several years in the MLB with different teams. The last team he played for was the Kansas City Royals, so we have always enjoyed going to Kauffman Stadium to watch the Royals together. Shane is a guy that everyone instantly loves. He is not only a blast to be around, but he is always the first one to make sure you are happy and having a good time. He has the biggest heart and I am so lucky he picked me to be his wife! Shane and I dated for a year and a half before he asked me to marry him. I still remember the night, like it happened just yesterday. On November 8th, 2015, (his birthday) we were out at a local bar getting a drink and trying to decide where we were going to go for dinner. I told him he could choose since it was his birthday. He said he didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t feel like going out and suggested we go to the store to get the ingredients to make nachos (he knows they are my favorite). I told him that sounded really boring for his birthday, but if that is what he wanted, we would do it. After the store, we went back to my apartment to start making dinner. I started browning the taco meat, and then Shane said he had to run to his apartment to get something that he wanted to have with the nachos. I said okay, and continued to make dinner. Ten minutes later, I heard the door open and when I turned around he was on one knee. He proceeded to say that all he wanted for his birthday was for me to marry him and to make him the happiest man in the world. I, of course, said yes and had never been happier! We planned some of our wedding on our own, but relied heavily on the expertise of Events by Nellie to pull it all together. The colors we decided on were ivory, champagne, gold, and blush (with lots of crystals and sparkling touches throughout). We wanted there to be an abundance of soft colors to compliment the venue. The day of the wedding flew by. Shane and the groomsmen spent most of the day golfing and hanging out at Top Golf. The girls started getting our hair and make up done in the morning, while having brunch and enjoing girl time. It was fun being able to hang out with my favorite gals before it was time to marry my best friend. Shane didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to see me until I walked down the aisle, so as soon as I saw him at the altar, all my nerves melted away.

The gift that I gave Shane was a baseball that I had wrote all of the reasons that he was â&#x20AC;&#x153;my perfect catchâ&#x20AC;? on it. Our ring bearer carried an old glove that Shane had used when he was playing Major League Baseball. Inside the glove were our wedding rings.

Mickey and I first met in the halls of our high school. We bumped into each other a few times between classes, and exchanged a few words, but it never amounted to anything other than a friendly exchange. Little did he know, I had a huge crush on him. In the fall of 2006, we both attended the school’s homecoming dance and found the opportunity to dance together during a slow song. For weeks after, I waited for Mickey to make a move. However, with no sign of progression, I decided to take matters into my own hands and left a post-it note on his truck with my number. A long couple days passed before he called to invite me to a techno dance party he was hosting. I was terrified, but went anyway. We talked at the party, and he was even so kind as to drive me home afterwards. We ended up talking for hours in the driveway, which concluded with an invite to hang out more the following day. We’ve been inseparable ever since. Mickey and I have always enjoyed taking road trips together. We’ve driven to New York City, Phoenix, Houston and numerous other destinations. It was always a dream of mine to get engaged in a gorgeous place during one of our vacations. After dating for 9 years, we planned a trip with friends to Omaha. We love visiting zoos and aquariums, so the destination was perfect. During our tour of the jungle dome inside the Omaha Zoo, we stopped to take a photo in front of a waterfall. My best friend, and future matron-of-honor, was taking the photo as Mickey got down on one knee and proposed. I immediately backed up in shock and complete disbelief to what was happening. I was pleasantly surprised. When planning our big day, I wanted to make sure we stayed true to ourselves. I wanted the wedding to be sentimental and laid back while also being personal and romantic. Our 14 month engagement seemed to fly by and everything was falling into place. The day of, I made a point to soak up as many memories as I could, I didn’t want to lose any of them. Leading up to the ceremony, people kept asking me if I was nervous. Looking back, there wasn’t a single moment in our entire wedding day that I felt anxious. Not during our first look, not while walking down the aisle or reading my vows, I never felt nervous. I had never been more sure of something in my life, every part of me was ready to marry Mickey. Our wedding day was a blur in the best kind of way. I felt so much love on that day, not just from Mickey, but from everyone in attendance. I remember that we were both too excited to finish our dinner because we couldn’t wait to talk to all our guests. And then soon after dinner, the dancing started, and never stopped. Mickey and I got married 10 years to the day of when we started dating in high school. And with the years of memories that we already shared as we said, “I Do,” I am excited to see what the next decade in our lives, and the countless years after that, hold in store for us.

Don’t get me wrong, I loved seeing Brittain walk down the aisle as I stood there with our dog child, unexpectantly crying through my hand written vows, and being pronounced hand-in-hand as husband and wife. Being walked down the aisle and seeing Mickey and our dog-baby, Roxy, waiting for me was my favorite moment of the day. My second favorite memory was our first dance. I was so focused on Mickey and the song that I wasn’t paying attention to anyone else. At one point he told me to look up and when I did, I saw everyone surrounding the dance floor watching us. She was so excited for our wedding and although we were heartbroken that she couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be there, it felt very special to know that her spirit was present throughout the day. We set up some doilies that she crocheted as part of our decorations. We also set white roses on empty chairs in the front rows in place of our grandparents who could not be with us.

Andrew and I met through mutual friends (my roommate was dating his roommate). We hung out in group settings often and eventually became more serious and started dating exclusively. What surprised us both about our relationship was how different our personalities are. He is a planner, type A, and very organized. He calls me “the free-spirited” one, and the opposite of organized. However, we quickly learned that his serious nature helps to ground me while my more laid-back personality brings out his playfulness. We dated for six months before Andrew decided to make a career change that would move him to Texas. I wasn’t quite ready to leave my job, but we both were willing to do whatever it took to make it work, so began our long-distance relationship. After nine months, I was planning on moving to Texas but was having some reservations about making the move without being engaged. Andrew flew to Kansas City one weekend when I didn’t expect him. He had my mom take me out to get my nails done ahead of time, and as we were finishing up, the nail technician comes up to me with a vase of flowers and a note inside that read, “Get ready for a night full of fun. A limo is outside waiting for you.” The limo took me to Liberty Memorial (we had come here often when we were both in Kanas City for dates), and there was Andrew, getting down on one knee to propose! After I said yes, he had the limo drive us around to some of our favorite spots around town. One of the spots we stopped at was Kelly’s in Westport, which is where we first met. Our parents were there waiting to toast us. After that, we stopped by McCoy’s which was a bar that we often went to with friends. When I walked in, he had a group of our closest friends and family members waiting to surprise us with an engagement party. It was so exciting and a night I will never forget! Our wedding was unconventional but that is what made it special to us. I come from a Jewish and Russian background, whereas Andrew was raised Catholic. It was important to us to incorporate both sets of traditions so as to not overshadow the other. We incorporated the Huppah (the wedding arc used during the ceremony), Kettubah (Jewish marriage license), smashing of the glass, and Horah (Jewish chair dance) from Jewish traditions. We had plenty of vodka shots in lieu of champagne toasts for the Russian side of my family, as well as a food station of just Russian hors d’oeuvres to highlight the culinary side of my family. For the Catholic side, we had traditional Catholic marriage blessings and readings done during the ceremony, as well as a traditional Catholic blessing over the food before we ate. In addition, we chose to have Andrew’s brother officiate so that the ceremony could be personalized to us. He was able to speak on behalf of our relationship and paint a wonderful picture for all of our guests about what our values truly are.

My favorie memory was after we said our “I do’s” and walked down the aisle as Mr. & Mrs. As soon as we walked out of the ceremony area, we shared our first moment as husband and wife. I can’t explain the feeling of blissfulness that was overpowering in that moment. After a year of planning, anticipation, excitement, and nervousness, that moment was a perfect reminder of the true meaning of the day. I couldn’t believe that I was finally his wife!

special pieces My mom gave me a very special gift the night before we got married. For ten years she had saved my grandmotherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s jewelry box that I played with as a child. Inside the box she put her diamond solitaire necklace that my dad gave to her on their anniversary. I thought she was letting me borrow it for the wedding day, but instead my parents had decided they wanted me to have it after all these years. It was the sweetest and most special gift.

I met Cara in the Fall of 2011. I was back for homecoming at Iowa State while she was still a student. We met through mutual friends, which is interesting in retrospect since we had both been at Iowa State at the same time for three years with similar friends but had never met before. We really hit it off that first day. We discussed seeing each other more but it was a logistic challenge since I lived in Kansas City. In the end, we wound up not seeing much of each other for over a year. On the night of September 24th, 2012, I was back at Iowa State for a work recruitment trip. Something about being back made me feel nostalgic and I got thinking about “that girl” that I had met one year earlier. I had just opened my laptop and navigated to Cara’s Facebook page when all of a sudden she messaged me… completely out of the blue. I knew right then and there that I needed to keep in touch with her. We ended up chatting for several hours that night, and then kept talking over the next few weeks. Eventually, she agreed to come down to Kansas City and go on a date with me. After that, everything fell into place. She started coming down to visit me on the weekends and I drove up to be with her in Iowa. I evenutally convinced her that she should come and live in Kansas City. We found her an apartment and for the next year we dated as happy young professionals living in the city. I had always wanted to go back to graduate school, and in the fall of 2013 I told Cara that I wanted to start applying. In hindsight this was pretty selfish, but I asked her to come with me. I was accepted to the Polymer Science program at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and in the Summer of 2014 we began preparing to move. Just before we hit the road, we made another life changing decision. We adopted a puppy from a local shelter. We named him KC and no story about us would be complete without him. We then made the move halfway across the country to Amherst, Massachusetts and I knew that any girl that would move that far away from her family and friends was a keeper. After living in Massachusetts for over a year, we planned a getaway in Cape May, New Jersey over Labor Day weekend. It was the perfect opportunity to surprise Cara with a proposal. Why Cape May you may ask? Well, Cara wanted to go to Diamond Beach where she could sit in the sand and search for rocks. Yes rocks. Cape May is known for its beautiful pebble beaches and great sunsets. So that weekend we dug and dug for rocks. All weekend long she kept asking me to find me the most perfect round rock diamond. Needless to say, the setup couldn’t have been any better. On our last night there, while digging for yet more rocks, during a Labor Day flag ceremony on the beach, I turned to her and said “Cara, Cara I found you the most roundest, and perfect Cape May diamond! But first I have a question to ask you!” At which point, I got down on one knee. She squealed, “There’s so many people!” Then she started crying, said “yes,” and then had to remind me to put the ring on her finger.

My favorite part of our wedding day was the first look. When we got to the pool, I was told that I was supposed to walk out to her. So I stared at the ground and tried not to fall in the pool as somebody led me to her. She was absolutely breathtaking. That is when the wedding day became real for me. It was the perfect beginning to an incredible day.

My favorite moment (other than marrying Matt) was when my dad gave his speech. I was so nervous and excited for him to stand up in front of the guests and talk about his only daughter. He gave one of the sweetest speeches I have ever heard. In his speech he mentioned that he finally got the son that he never had.

But since we couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do that, we had custom clay figurines made of each dog and placed as cupcake toppers. We also took pictures beforehand with our sweet pups so they could be a part of our special day. My mom gave me the most beautiful vintage opal and diamond ring as my something old. Opal is my motherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s birthstone so this ring is extra special as it will always remind me of our close relationship.

Erick and I grew up in the small town of Tonganoxie, Kansas, but didn’t end up crossing paths until the Fall of 2009 at Pittsburg State University. We were just teenagers when we met as freshmen but sharing life’s experiences brought us closer together. We made many memories throughout our years at college and quickly fell in love. In September of 2014, Erick and I moved into our first home together. We both wanted the next step to be marriage, so I had the feeling that a proposal was coming. Christmas, New Years Eve, Valentine’s Day, and my birthday all passed to no avail. It was now spring and still no ring. It finally happened on June 17th, 2015. A Wednesday, which I would have never expected. Erick called me on his way home from work as usual and told me he was going to stop by the grocery store to grab us dinner. That wasn’t something he would normally do, but I didn’t think it was weird because we we enjoyed grilling out during the summer. We both got home from work and Erick made a delicious dinner. After dinner we decided to relax on the couch. The next thing I knew, Erick had gone to the bedroom, grabbed the ring box and came back to the living room. He got down on one knee, said the sweetest words and gave me the most beautiful ring. It was unexpected, natural, and so very sweet. Planning the wedding came naturally to me. I work in the fashion industry and have always had the need to be working on a creative project, so wedding planning fit right in. Like most girls, I’ve dreamt about my wedding for years. When it became my time, I was more than prepared with my “One Day, Someday” Pinterest board. We wanted our wedding to be whimsical, romantic, and lovely; but I also wanted to infuse some of my personality by adding some embellished and glamourous elements. We incorporated lots of flowers and greenery including peonies, garden roses, and ranunculus. Gold chargers and mercury glass votives balanced with natural touches of wooden crates, wine barrels, and lanterns. I made craft-paper thank you notes and garnished each one at the place settings with rosemary. I planned our entire wedding and would do it again tomorrow if I could, I absolutely loved every second of it. Six years had passed before we became husband and wife. We are now happily living in our first home together, in the town we grew up in with our two fur babies, Brantley and Brinkley.
