This installment of “Letter from the Publisher” is bittersweet to say the least. It is a farewell letter of sorts, as I begin the process of parting ways with EA Bride, thus making this letter the last of it’s kind. To say it’s been a journey is an understatement. I remember clear back when EA was just a dream of mine, a twinkle of my eye, if you will. Akin to a new mother about to conceive her first child, I planned and meticulously plotted for the arrival of our first issue. And I was both relieved and ecstatic when it turned out even better than I had hoped for. Over the years, it’s taught me an invaluable number of lessons, caused me tears, laughter, and late nights filled with work and worry from time to time. And just like that of a child, the success of this “baby” wasn’t all of my doing. Not even close. It is thanks to all the readers who’ve collected copies. All the brides sharing their stories with us. All the professionals who took part in showcasing their skills so this publication could come to life. And especially to the small but mighty team we’ve had over the years who have worked tirelessly to paint this perfect vision and make dreams a reality. For all of that, I can’t thank you enough. Although I’m saddened to turn the page on this massive chapter in my story, I will never forget the way this experience has shaped me along the way, and it finally feels like the right time to make this move. Because the sweetest part is, I get to pass the torch. And not just to anyone, but rather to the most integral piece of this editorial puzzle, Britney Beach-Jones. From her humble beginnings as a contributing writer, Britney quickly proved her prowess as she took more and more initiative to show us what a vital component she could be. And now as our Executive Editor, there’s really nothing this girl can’t do, and I couldn’t be prouder to partner with her all these years on this bridal project. No one is more deserving, and I would trust such responsibility to none other than the person who’s treated it like her very own all along! Congratulations Britney, and I know you will carry this torch proudly! And to everyone else, I wish you years of bridal bliss and a lifetime of happiness! Many of the engagement stories we have been told seem to have one underlining problem. Soon after a couple decides to spend their lives together, they embark on the journey from “Yes” to “I Do”. And amidst this journey, they find that they have a few candid opportunities for a lens to capture their lifestyle as a couple. Here is a look inside a real couple’s candid moment and a few tidbits that you can take away as you plan for your engagement shoot. Alex and Rachel allowed us to crash their engagement shoot with Spencer Studios. From this shoot, we learned that there are actually three objects in focus to the photographer: the boy, the girl, and the ring. And while all of these were in perfect focus, allow us to shine some light on what you can learn from their shoot to enhance yours. Looking at Locations: don’t get so caught up in the precise location you will be taking photos. When you are the focal point, backgrounds are commonly blurred out of focus. Place an emphasis on lighting instead. Choosing a location with natural light can make your images look more natural. Loosen Up: there will be certain moments where your photographer asks you to hold hands or kiss because they are envisioning a particular shot. But for the moments that you are not receiving instruction, shake off the awkwardness and just be yourselves. Some of the most genuine photos are captured when couples are relaxed and interacting normally.

Offering Accents: instead of using the word “props” which are commonly used by actors in a play, let’s instead explore some accent pieces that can create an interactive experience. Alex and Rachel chose to incorporate champagne, crackers, apple cider and a blanket into their engagement shoot. Back at home they popped champagne and toasted to their engagement, all the while, the photographer is capturing the moment. When they ventured outside, they grabbed a blanket and a warm drink. Notice that all of these items created interaction and an experience for the couple. When you pick out accent pieces for your engagement shoot, what will you pack that will make the moment more memorable for the both of you?

INDULGING IN ENGAGEMENTS Engagement season and the endless squeals of “Yes!” that can be heard around town during this time of year always make us feel like we are living in a Nicholas Sparks movie. We feel the strings on our heart tug for the affection that these men show to their brides as they take a knee. And while some left us crying, and others laughing, they all left us saying, “Awwww”. Here are a few stories that readers shared with us from their big moment when they changed, forevermore from “you and me” to “we”.

Melissa is a big tennis player and a very good one. She comes from a family of good tennis players and she won state in high school and played collegiately. So when deciding how I wanted to propose, I wanted to do something unique that would be special to her. I wanted it to be a total surprise as I picked out the ring and made all the plans without her knowing. We went to play tennis on February 15th, the day after an “uneventful” Valentine’s Day, which I’m sure left her mildly disappointed. I had arranged for a friend and a photographer to be on the court next to us to capture the special moment and the word quickly spread amongst the tennis club employees about what was going to happen. We woke up early to get to the tennis courts and after our first game (which she beat me at) I tossed her a tennis ball that I had written “Will You Marry Me?” on. Then I got down on one knee and she said YES!

After eight years together, we decided to get serious about getting married. So, the adventure of designing an engagement ring began. Breanne knew the proposal should be approaching as the ring was coming to an end in it’s design process. However, after months and months, still no proposal. On the last weekend of the summer, Ryan suggested they go to the Lake of the Ozarks and take the boat out. Breanne thought, “Maybe this would be it!” However, when they arrived at the lake everything that could go wrong, did. Breanne’s dream engagement weekend was fizzling. On the last morning before they headed home, Ryan suggested to take the boat out for morning fishing. Breanne reluctantly agreed and sat on the front of the boat with her arms crossed the whole ride. Ryan knew exactly what she was pouting about and had planned to get her to her weakest point in an effort to completely throw her off. Finally, he stopped the boat, cast a line into the water and asked Breanne to go to the tackle box and get him a weight. Breanne went to the tackle box, rolling her eyes the whole way. She opened the box… and there among the fish guts and hooks, was a pink, dream engagement ring. After reflecting on the moment, they laughed together, cried together, and finally Ryan got down on one knee and asked Breanne if they could spend their lives together.

There was an unexpected moment after she said yes. I was so focused on her, that it seemed like nothing else existed in that moment. And what snapped me back to reality was when I began to hear clapping, better yet cheering. It turns out, they were cheering for us. There was a tennis class of teenage kids on the court next to us and their instructor had told them there might be a proposal happening, so when she said yes, they all started cheering. It was surprising and incredible! The rest of the day was spent celebrating and bringing both sets of parents together to meet for the first time and have dinner. Video Scavenger Hunt

Going Once, Going Twice, Sold!

Caleb’s proposal to Tara was one for the books. It was an all day extravagant affair, where he led her through a mysterious, and very enjoyable, scavenger hunt!

My dad enjoys auctioneering in his spare time and told us about how he was going to take a new course in Colorado in the fall. Later he told us that in order to get into the school he had to do a “fake” auction to show the school his ability and experience. He told me weeks in advance that he would need an audience for it to look completely real. I suggested to invite as many family members and close friends as we could, as I knew they would be the only ones that would show up to a “fake” auction. We invited 50 of our closest friends and family. James had class that entire day and texted me twenty minutes before the auction started that he would be late, if he could even made it at all. The auction started and my dad said he would choose who bid each time to keep it from being chaos. The first item was auctioned off. Then the second item. My dad chose me along with a few others to make bids. I ended up winning the bid and he told me to come to the stage. I thought this was strange but I went ahead and went up there. As I was facing the audience, James came from behind the curtains and got down on one knee. I turned around to see him and was shocked! It felt like an out-of body experience.

Her first instructions came in the form of a QR code on a postcard that her coworker handed to her. Tara scanned the QR code, which pulled up a YouTube video on her phone. The video was of Caleb, looking very handsome mind you, telling Tara that it was time to leave work and head to the first location of the evening. The first location was a salon, where Caleb had arranged for Tara to receive a full manicure and pedicure. From there, she received her second postcard, which had another QR code on it. Upon scanning the second code, another video of Caleb was pulled up. This one told Tara to head to Macy’s down the street and find something beautiful to wear that night. He told her a giftcard to cover the cost and her next envelope would be waiting for her at the register. At Macy’s she found the perfect dress and had her makeup done by the makeup artist. Now she was ready for a night out on the town! Once Tara had been thoroughly pampered, she received her final instructions telling her to head to Bella Patina, an antique shop in the West Bottoms. It is a gigantic warehouse space that has been converted into one of the most charming spots in the city. Upon entering the building, she saw signs pointing her up to the third floor. Quickly she ascended the stairs, eager to find what awaited her at the top. She finally made it to the third floor, finding signs pointing her to a certain couch where Caleb had a camera set up and rolling. She sat down on the couch, seeing a sign that said “Say whatever you’d like to the camera, then push play!” There was his laptop sitting on the coffee table, with a pre-recorded video pulled up. After catching her breath, Tara mustered some words from the heart. She was too excited to think! She pushed play on the laptop, held her breath, and listened. It was a video of Caleb sitting there on that very same couch, speaking beautiful things about his love for Tara and the future he saw for them. Once the video ended, Caleb came out from around the corner, got down on one knee, and proposed! She said yes, and the rest is history!

Turned out, there was no need for a “fake” auction but it was the perfect reason to have all of our closest friends and family there to witness the proposal! -Sami on being proposed to by James

A Picnic Proposal

The Ring in the Window

Jesse and I are big picnickers. It is an inexpensive way to go out on a date while still getting to have meaningful time together. It is also a great way to fuel my unhealthy obsession with collecting vintage picnic baskets. He took me on a picnic to Loose Park one Thursday afternoon under a tree where we had picniced before. He had prepped this picnic, and used my favorite picnic basket and vintage plates. He also surprised me by bringing along these mugs that he bought us when we were 12 years old, which we had dubbed our “friendship mugs.” My mug had broken years ago, but he somehow found a replacement and surprised me by bringing it on our picnic. As we were getting up to leave, he covered my eyes. When I opened my eyes, there were little twinkle lights in the tree and he was down on one knee, holding the most beautiful vintage ring I had ever seen. I cried…a lot… and after about five minutes actually put the ring on. He even had a photographer hiding behind a tree to capture the whole deal. We were so happy and I was so surprised!

Chris and I had been dating for over two years when I started bringing up the subject of ‘taking the next step’. I would drag him to go ring shopping, changing my mind at every store we went in. Then I found it. He knew it. I knew it. About a month later, and several constant weekends of ring shopping around the city, we went back to look at the ring we both loved. It was gone! I started crying and asked the jeweler if they could get another one. But of course not, only one of a kind rings sold here. I was devastated.

I blacked out, and don’t remember much of what he said when he proposed. Later, when I asked him wh what he said, he replied, “Whatever you always dreamed of me saying.”

Running for More Than Time Ben and I had trained for the Chicago Marathon for months and were excited to run the race and have a little getaway at the same time. Ben was running for a personal best, and I was more about running for completion. After I finished the race, I called to track him down at the finish line. We eventually found each other in the sea of people. Immediately when we connected, Ben grabbed my hand and got down on one knee. I blacked out, and don’t remember much of what he said. Later, when I asked him what he said, he replied, “Whatever you always dreamed of me saying.” Which was funny, because he definitely did not say that. I later told him that if I knew I was getting a diamond at the end of the race, I would have been keeping up with the Kenyans. -Cassie on being proposed to by Ben

Fast forward two months. We were getting ready for the great Valentine’s Day holiday. I was finishing getting ready in the bathroom and Chris was persistent about leaving. As I walked out to the living room, he was standing there waiting all dolled up for dinner. We were going through our checklist of everything then he grabbed my hands and got down on one knee. He pulled out a box with the most gorgeous ring I’d seen. It was the one we had both fallen in love with. Turns out he had gone back the day after we first saw the ring to puchase it. He even told the staff that I was going to drag him back there, and to play it cool. I was so elated and couldn’t stop crying. A Surprise of a Horse’s Size

Jared and I were flying to Dallas to celebrate his birthday. A week before we were to leave, Jared asked that I let him make all the plans. He asked that I not ask any questions about where we were going or what we would be doing, as he wanted to surprise me. Since it was his birthday, I did not ask the million questions I normally do.

It was a sunny day in May when Brock surprised me to take me riding horses. We were having a blast as we laughed and enjoyed each others company while riding. We stopped at an opening of a field by a lake. All of a sudden, Brock jumped off his horse and came over to me with a blindfold. He said “Put this on, there is a surprise for you.” Now at this point I am thinking, “What the heck is going on?”

Jared said that we would be going to Five Sixty by Wolfgang Puck. A town car picked us up from the hotel and as he dropped us off I heard Jared let him know we would be ready about 6:45pm. I thought it was odd, started to ask a question then just went along with it. Jared walked me straight to a circular table where a red rose was waiting for me. He ordered glasses of wine while we enjoyed the amazing view. A waitress came by and asked if she could take our photo. She quickly stated she worked for the restaurant and they love to get photos of their traveling visitors. I thought it was really peculiar but obviously didn’t think much of it. She took our photo and we got our check shortly after. Jared had made dinner reservations at a steakhouse. I got back into the town car, where I found another rose waiting for me. After dining at the steakhouse, I was beginning to wonder what was wrong with Jared because he kept looking around anxiously, and even more strange was that he had to go to the bathroom every five minutes. Literally. I kept asking if he was ok, and all he could say was that he was great and just had a little stomach issue. When we left the steakhouse, I expected to see the town car again… but instead found a white horse drawn carriage waiting for us! A bottle of wine and chocolate covered strawberries were waiting for us inside. We rode around and ended at the Rosewood Mansion. As we entered, I heard music coming from the patio, it was one of my favorite songs (he asked them to have it playing when we entered). They had big beautiful trees adorned with lights, little fireplaces and cozy tables set up. As we sat down, another rose was waiting for me at a table with two glasses of wine. A bartender came to our table and handed a card to me. I was so confused. Jared sat beside me as I opened the envelope and began to read the sweetest card. I finished reading it, and he asked me to turn it over. As I did, he got down on one knee. He had secured the most beautiful ring to the back, and written, “Will you marry me?” He proceeded to say some things that I literally cannot remember. I just stared crying and said yes. Turns out, he had two friends photographing us all night and delivering the roses, wine, and other little surprises. Which is why he kept having to leave for the bathroom, to tell them where we were and to make sure they were ready. - Julie on being proposed to by Jared

I was completely convinced Brock had gotten me a horse, because I had made comments about having one of my own many times. Brock starts leading my horse, and I am hoping and praying I don’t fall off this animal before I get my surprise! Brock comes over to my horse and pulls me off like a princess. He sets me on my feet and leads me through the field. Then he grabs my hands and tells me how much he loves me and has enjoyed our years together. Then he took off my blindfold. He said “Look around”. I look to my left and there are both of our families. By the time I looked back at Brock he was on one knee. My surprise is not a horse. Brock was proposing! He asked the big question, “Will you marry me?” I stumbled back thinking that this had to be a dream. I felt like I was about to faint and at a complete loss of words. My sweet niece, Lexi, runs up with a sign that says “Say Yes Aunt B”. Then the tears start to hysterically burst out as Brock asks again, anxiously still waiting for my answer, “Will you be my wife?” I finally blurted out the words “Yes of course” and basically strangled him with a hug. -Brooke on be proposed to by Brock

The ceremony is THE most important aspect to your big day.....is your AV company prepared? Your guests have been anticipating the big day for over a year now. They arrive expecting a beautiful ceremony and great reception They sit down to what is sure to be an emotional display of love and the blending of two families, only to be completely distracted the whole time by the microphones cutting out, feeding back, and hearing more wind noise than the official. The music cues are sloppy and worst of all... you’ve just set the tone for the rest of the night. Your guests now have much lower expectations for the reception and will be judging all of your vendor choices. Moral of this story is make sure you AV team is well prepared for an outdoor or indoor ceremony, especially if it is being held off-site from the reception. Ask about “wind shielding” technology for outdoor microphones, ensure you and your audio technician are on the same page with the music selections and timing of the ceremony. My advice to those that are engaged and beginning to plan their wedding is to make sure you start early enough in the planning process. Also, you need to find a wedding planner who handles your money as if it is their own. Weddings are extremely expensive and you want to know that everything is within your budget. When planning, make sure you have your closest friends and family there to help. Having people around you that really care about you will take a ton of stress off of you and make the process much more enjoyable. -Pat

Fun for the Booze Worthy

While my dad and I were waiting to walk down the aisle my maid of honor came over to let our coordinator know we didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have the rings. Whoops! They had been left in the bridal suite. During the ceremony I wore my engagement ring on my right hand. My fiance spent a minute trying to get my ring off so he could have something to put on my left finger during the ring portion of the ceremony. After a trying-to-be-secret/ under-our-breaths conversation we realized our coordinator had saved the day and gotten our rings up to the roof. Crisis averted! -Brynn

After the wedding ceremony we rode around in a trolley to take photos. When we first boarded, we noticed that, even though there was supposed to be, there was not any alcohol on the trolley. We were already limited on time, but we decided that champagne and Tank 7 were far too important to go without. It ended up making for an even better journey because we had to detour to a liquor store so my husband and I could pick up drinks for the wedding party. We got some really fun photos of that moment. The stop by the liquor store took longer than expected, so we set off for photos with not nearly enough time. Because of this, at each stop we made, everyone had to unload as quickly as possible and jog to each photo location. This part was so much fun, and there are numerous photos of various members of the wedding party running around laughing hysterically. We made pretty good time post-liquor store and were only a little late (and sweaty) returning for the reception. -Lindsay

Oh, Just Forget It! Ryan and I had taken dance lessons, and had prepared a choreographed slow dance for our first dance. When we got on the floor to start, our nerves got the best of us! We decided to just enjoy our first dance, and not worry about the steps. We got to experience a wonderful first dance even though it was not as planned, and we even threw in a dip at the end! -Aly

A Vendor Takes Flight We had planned to make a grand exit from our wedding in a helicopter. We hired a helicopter company and met with the pilot several times during the months leading up to the wedding. We were notified five days before the wedding via a casual email that they were cancelling on us. It was a scramble and very stressful to get a last minute pilot. We almost cancelled it, but luckily were able to find someone and work out all of the logistics last minute. - Reshma & Neel

Bridal Party Take-Over We had coordinated for our first dance to transition to a multi-song mash up to impress our guests. We included our bridal party in on the treat! Before the wedding, we spent time rehearsing the moment towards the end of the mash up when the bridesmaids and groomsmen were to come out and join us. We practiced it several times. When it came to the night of the wedding, my bride and I started our first dance. Then the mash up started and we began our choreographed routine. As the second song of the mix started, all of the bridal party stormed the dance floor a full two songs early. It screwed up our routine but we all winged it, all the while laughing at what had just happened. -Pat

Q: What type of information should I have ready when I call to reserve rentals for my wedding day? A: While some numbers may change over the coarse of

your engagement, it is good to have an estimate of the number of guests, the size of the tables that you want linens for, and the venue rules and regulations for delivery and pickup.

Q: What are some of the trends that you see taking place in regards to design and decor? A: Gold has been so popular this season as well as a hot commodity for 2017 as well! In some cases, gold is the main color and in others, it is simply a metallic accent. Some of our popular gold pieces include charger plates, gold-rimmed plates, and gold linens.

As for the top color choices of the season, while they are complete opposites, shades of pastels and jeweled tones have been the hot picks. Couples looking for a light and airy wedding tend to lean towards the lighter shades of linens: lilac, ivory, or blush. Couples looking for rich deep tones for their wedding tend to gravitate more towards plum, ruby, and navy. Couples are also incorporating their colors in unique ways through LED lighting and custom Gobos.

Q: Guest counts typically fluctuate during the coarse of an engagement. What if I reserved more rentals than what I actually need? A: I suggest that you always get your initial quote for

rentals with the total number of guests that are invited to the wedding. You can adjust the number down up until two weeks out from the big day. Plus, knowing a total dollar figure for the full invited guest count will allow you to better budget for the rental items. When your reception has non-assigned tables, it is recommended to seat one extra guest table than what you need. If you are ordering china, glassware, or silverware it is always best to order 20 items more than the final guest count in case someone drops their fork on the floor or wants to make a second trip back to the buffet.

Q: What if one of my guests causes damage to one of the items I rented? A: Ultimately, as the signed client, you are responsible for

the damage caused to any of the rented items. You will be responsible for all replacement costs. The most common rental that I see damaged are linens. Wax from candles drip on the linen and damages it. To prevent this from occurring at your event, make sure that all of your candles are contained.

Q: How do I know that what I see online is what I am getting? A: While viewing items on the website can be very helpful during initial research, it is always best to schedule a time to visit the showroom to view your rentals in person.

This is recommended most for linens. A linen color that you see on the computer screen may actually appear different in person. And when you are perfecting the style of your wedding, the wrong shade can through the whole look off! Also, if you come in and don't like the color in person, there are on-site consultants who can help you get all the perfect items you need. There are many cases where feeling the texture, seeing the color and experiencing the quality of the items you are renting can make all the difference!

Q: What is one detail that couples commonly forget when ordering rentals for their wedding? A: I am so glad you asked this question! The most

common hurdle that we see week-to-week is that couples are not aware of their venue's delivery guidelines. Knowing these particulars can eliminate chaos when getting your rentals to the chosen venue. Let me explain this further. Venues can host more than one wedding in a weekend; therefore, they may not allow the rentals for your wedding to be delivered until the actual day of. The same is true for breakdown. If there is a wedding the day after yours, it may be required that your items be picked up the night of the wedding. This incurs more costs on the rental side because of the after hours service of coming to collect the order. Never assume that your venue will be open for your items to be delivered. It is always best to ask them the window of time for delivery and pickup. If you wish to save on day-of costs, you can choose to pick up, drop off, or do both to eliminate any additional fees.

Contractual Confusion Finding the perfect wedding professionals to be apart of your wedding day can be daunting. You spend hours searching on the internet, send endless emails inquiring on date availability, and arrange meetings with the elite on your list with the hope that you will find a match. The process, as a whole, can be tiring. So alas, when you find a professional that you cannot picture your wedding without, you will go to leaps and bounds to get them to say “Yes” to your dream wedding. While it is not common for companies to flake on couples, there has been an instance or two that have brought light to the importance of understanding contracts. You don’t want to go in full-on panic mode at your rehearsal dinner because you have yet to hear if your cake is going to show up the next day; or even worse, you don’t want a photographer to shoot your wedding and then never give you the images. Ensuring that you follow this protocol when hiring a professional will guarantee that you are protecting yourself from harms way.

1. Read the Contract

Don’t immediately skip to the signature line on the back page. Read the contract you have received slowly and thoroughly. If you are meeting directly with the professional and want to time to review it in private, simply ask to take it home and return it at a later time. Some contracts have been written by lawyers, and therefore, the jargon can be confusing. Highlight and write down questions on any portion of the contract that you do not understand. Then email your questions to the professional and have them reply back to you with clear and thorough answers. Save the response as a paper trail in case there are any future complications. When you feel completely comfortable with the content included in the contract, go ahead and sign!

2. Breakdown All Pricing

Eliminate the possibility of pop-up fees by having a payment schedule finalized prior to signing the contract. Whether these fees are lineitemed in the contract or on an attached addendum, you will want to get a dollar figure of what you will pay the vendor based on the services they will be providing you. You should also have them illustrate how much is required as a deposit, how much will be remaining after the deposit is paid, and when the final payments are due. Some professionals, such as the florist, caterer, bar supplier, and rental provider will have fluctuating totals based on the final guest count. It is still important to ask these providers for an invoice prior to signing a contract so that it will bring to light any hidden fees that you are not aware of.

3. Request a Signed Copy

Don’t assume that your signed contract means anything to you without their signature on it too. While a signed agreement surely saves the date for you on the professional’s side, it doesn’t help to protect you in case a problem should occur. It is imperative that you get a signed contract back from your vendor with a representative’s signature and the date.

4. Get Signed Addendums

Ensure that changes you make on the initial contract are legally recognized. It is common for the details of contracts to change during the coarse of the planning process. For example, you may want to change the event times listed on the contract, or add on a-la-carte services that you hadn’t previously contracted. When changing or adding items to a contact is important to create an addendum with the details of the change, and have both yourself and the vendor sign and date. Changes made verbally are not contractually binding and therefore can leave you vulnerable if a discrepancy should occur.

The Brunch Bash

For many years past, wedding protocol called for an evening affair. You know, a reception that would span into the wee hours of the night, with liquid libations and the kind of dance floor shenanigans that would be talked about for weeks to come! Fortunately, for many, that is now just one of the many options for the modern bride. Now that your wedding can be anything you want it to be, it can also happen at any time you see fit. Perhaps that’s why we’re seeing a surge in brunch style soirees. And the benefits are plenty. You can see all the gorgeous scenery in the light of day. It’s ideal and low key for older guests, second marriages, or the bride who wants something sophisticated and unique. 50

U n d e r s ta n d i n g U s h e r s Ushers often seem to get a bad rap. Often considered the red-headed step children of the wedding party, it’s easy for them to miss out on the kudos they so rightly deserve! Let’s face it: it’s not always feasible to line up your brothers, cousins, best friends, and everyone in your fraternity along side you without a ridiculously long ring around the pews. That said, some of your nearest and dearest should serve as ushers instead. Getting your wedding party informed on their duties for the big day seems endless. From bridesmaids, groomsmen, parents, grandparents, to the flower girl and ring bearer, it is easy to see why ushers can be the last to find out what their responsibility is for the day. And sometimes, the bride herself doesn’t even know exactly what to tell them. Alas, here is the breakdown of everything an usher is and what their role encompasses on the wedding day.

The crux of this position is to escort guests down the aisle as they arrive to the ceremony to their proper seating assignment, whether that’s various sides, or sectioned into family or friends. It is proper to offer an arm to the female attendees to guide them to their seat and allow their date or significant other to follow.

And even once the ceremony is over, an usher’s job is not quite done yet. Ushers are the perfect fit to welcome guests to the reception. They can hold the door for arriving guests, run out to cars to help women if it is raining, and assist the elderly up the elevator. It isn’t too lenient to say that they are the concierge to the guests.

Ushers also need to become familiar with the ceremony venue. They may receive questions from guests as to the location of the restrooms or if there is a handicap accessible entrance. Another crucial aspect of this position is assisting the members of the immediate family during the processional. For example, an usher may walk Grandma down the aisle to her appointed seat, all the while being followed by Grandpa. If the same usher is to escort multiple people, they should find their way back to the processional line by walking on the outer sides of the seating area instead of walking straight back down the aisle. When planning, it is appropriate to allocate one usher for every 50 guests expected in attendance. 66

Often times, it is important for the usher to familiarize themself with the reception venue. Now that the guests recognize that they are a person of knowledge, they may ask where the entrance can be found, where the restroom is located or if the tables are assigned. Being knowledgeable of these pieces of information can eliminate questions being asked of the bride and groom. Some reception venues have doors that need to be opened for the bridal party to make their way through for the grand entrance. From a photo standpoint, it is best to have ushers provide this service. Typically, after this point, they can jump into guest mode and enjoy the rest of the day’s festivities.

Make sure you communicate with your ushers everything you expect and want them to take part in. While you’ll often be busy thinking of everything for the main party people, ushers often fall low on the priority list, leaving them in wedding purgatory of not quite knowing what to do. Therefore, let them know if you need their presence in the formal pictures, what events to expect them at (rehearsal, grooms dinner, bachelor party, reception, etc.). The more specific you are with what you need from them, the more seriously they will take their role. And just as you usually would gift your wedding party for their participation, don’t forget the guys seaming everything together! It doesn’t have to be the same thing, but a token of your appreciation will go a long way!

Standard protocol says that the ushers should wear something similar to the rest of the bridal party, namely the groomsmen, so everything is coordinated. However, no one says you have to be standard. With these guys, you can dare to get creative. Since they’re often the first people in the party that your guests will see, a little added flare for them can often set the tone for fun or frill, depending on what you’re after! Splashy ties, or a pop-of-color vest are just two small ways to pack a big punch on your day!

special pieces My aunt gave me a piece of lace from my Ammaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s (Grandma) wedding dress. I cut it into the shape of a heart and sewed it into the lining of my dress right by my heart. My aunt read the Lordâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s prayer in Icelandic, which was a little touch of my heritage that we incorporated. It has also been a running joke that Alex (who loves Iceland) would be Icelandic once we were married.

Alex and I met at work. At the time, we were both working at a tech company in Lawrence, Kansas. I was the human resource coordinator and he was a software engineer. We had worked together for a year before we started talking. We are both shy, so our initial conversations consisted of hours spent on Facebook chat When we finally went on a date, we both brought a friend. The date went really well, and our second date was the following day. The most surprising thing about our new love was how immediate it was. After just a few weeks I remember calling my mom and sister saying, “You guys, this guy is totally the one I am going to marry!” Our relationship felt so right from the very first time we talked. It was also surprising how many random and unique things that we had in common. It just seemed meant to be. On December 17th, 2014, I had my final review for my architecture studio. It is well known within the architecture student community that this day culminates in numerous alcoholic beverages. The morning of the 17th, Alex texted me asking that I not make any plans for the evening. I responded informing him that plans for this particular evening had been made back in August when the semester had started. After surviving the day of presentations, I headed with a group of architecture friends to a local bar for a much needed round of Tank 7s. Around the time Alex would be getting off work, I sent him a text message requesting a ride. He responded saying that he couldn’t pick me up but that I needed to come home. Somewhat unsure of what the message might mean, I showed the text to my younger sister, Allison. Allison took one look at the text and exclaimed, “Oh my gosh, he is going to propose!” I immediately started downing water to sober up as quickly as possible. Alex wasn’t home when I arrived from the bar. Convinced that a proposal was imminent, I took a minute to touch up my makeup. It was during this time that I checked my phone and Alex had sent me a link to a website. This is where the true fun began. The link led to a scavenger hunt web application that Alex had designed and built himself! It was composed of cyrptic clues that related to different memories and places around Lawrence that we had shared together. I started answering the questions and soon began my adventure around the city. After solving the final clue, I made my way to a park where Alex was waiting. At the park, there is a path that is lined on both sides with low intertwined trees. On this night the trees were wrapped in white Christmas lights. At the end of the magical tunnel of lights, Alex was smiling and waiting. I made it to the end, and he popped the question! I (obviously) said yes and it began to snow. It was the most perfect and magical proposal. 72

When we first boarded the trolley we noticed that there was no alcohol. We were already limited on time, but we decided that beverages were far too important to go without. Picking some up took longer than expected and therefore, at each photo stop we made, everyone had to unload and jog to each photo location as quickly as possible. There are numerous photos of various members of the wedding party running around and laughing hysterically.

My favorite part of the day was the trolley ride and the reception. It was so much fun to have a moment with our wedding party right after the ceremony. It was a mini celebration with our closest friends and family before the big party back at the reception. The reception was perfection. Andy and I met while living in Dallas, Texas. He had attended SMU and was working in the finance industry and I had moved to the area for work after attending Mizzou. We met at a mutual friend’s house one afternoon. After talking and hanging out all day (and after a few drinks) he “proposed” using a wire he’d twisted into a ring. The rest of the night he jokingly referred to me as his “wife”. We exchanged numbers that night and made plans to hang out later in the week. The very first text he sent me was “where is my wife”? Three and a half years later he would propose for real. I still have the wire ring he made me. My sister and I are extremely close so Andy enlisted her help in his proposal. She called me to invite me to dinner at this new restaurant in Dallas that was nearly impossible to get into at the time. She said her husband’s boss had a reservation he couldn’t use so he offered it to us. So dinner was to be the four of us: myself, Andy, my sister and her husband. The restaurant was in a park on the edge of downtown Dallas with incredible views of the city. My sister suggested walking around the park before our dinner and at one point we stopped to take pictures with the city skyline in the background. While Andy and I were posing for our picture, he got down on one knee and proposed. We went to dinner and celebrated just the four of us but as dinner wrapped up, Andy let me know he had called all of our friends and they were waiting outside on the restaurant patio. We celebrated all night with our closest friends. I worked as a corporate event planner in Dallas so I did the vast majority of my own planning. My former boss served as my day-of coordinator. I spent a lot of time focusing on the timeline and flow for the entire wedding weekend. We ended up having a four day celebration- welcome party hosted by family friends on Thursday, the rehearsal dinner Friday, the wedding day, and a post wedding brunch. About half of our 210 guests were from out of town. Something I learned working in events was to walk through your event from a guest’s perspective. With that in mind, I spent a lot of time working on touchpoints that made my guests’ experience seamless, easy and fun. I wanted a classic, elegant spring wedding that didn’t feel overly stuffy. Floral was extremely important to me and my florist absolutely blew me away with his creativity and vision. We constantly joked the theme was “blush and bashful” (from Steel Magnolias). I was able to relax and enjoy our big day because I put the day-of coordination in the hands of someone I really trusted. We had a traditional church ceremony and a formal sit down dinner at the reception. As soon as the band started though, the night turned into a party and we never left the dance floor. Our band was incredible and we threw in a lot of touches that kept the party going- from light up sticks, to sunglasses, to a photo booth, and a late night mac-and-cheese bar.

I had her wedding band from the early 1900’s tied to my bouquet, which was inscribed with “Andy to Lucy”. Instead of a traditional guest book, we had a whiskey barrel head customized with our last name and wedding date- a nod to my husband’s distillery, J. Rieger & Co.

My favorite moment of the day was definitely our first look. I walked up the stairs at The Kauffman Center and met him on the landing while our friends watched us from above. And when it came time for his best man’s speech, he woke up in the middle of the night (his time) to Skype in and give a toast. It was such a special moment and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house.

Richie and I met on November 6, 2009 at Truman State University. My soccer team was hosting a Halloween party and Richie decided to make an appearance. He asked me for my name roughly six times before I finally spelled it out for him. We ended up chatting all night and bonded over our mutual love of whiskey. After a fun evening, I got Richie’s number and we parted ways. We spent every day of the next week going for walks and meeting up between classes. Exactly one week after we met, we had our first official date. We were together every day for months after that night; and after almost seven years, will make it official. Richie and I spent New Year’s Eve 2015 in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan skiing. We had a ski-in-ski-out condo. I woke up one morning and there were candles lit from the bedroom out to the living room. There I saw Richie sitting by a fire. Richie usually woke up before me and had a history of surprising me, so I didn’t expect what was about to happen. When he stood up to hug me, I could feel his heart beating out of his chest and that’s when it hit me. He said a lot of sweet things (I’m pretty sure…the world kind of flew by at that moment) and got down on one knee. I was so excited and overwhelmed! It was the happiest, most amazing moment. For the past five years of our relationship, Richie has spent his summers with the other love in his life: the river. He works as a white-water rafting guide in Canon City, Colorado. Luckily for him, I get to complete my third and fourth years of school in Denver. After more than our fair share of long distance time in our relationship, we are finally in the same place. For good! When Richie is not rafting, he works ski patrol at Loveland Ski Area and is happier than ever. Especially now as we’ve fulfilled our dream of getting a puppy. Zoe loves our life in Colorado and is the perfect little addition to our family! Planning long distance was a bit of a challenge. We were fortunate that our venue and vendors made the whole process as easy and straightforward as possible. We started the day getting ready with our favorite people. Richie and I did a “first look” on the rooftop where we would later be married. I can’t remember the last time I had butterflies like that. After capturing all the necessary photos with our bridal party, we head to UpDown to play some skee-ball and have a toast with our maids and men. It was a fun way to relax before the ceremony and to remember that the day is all about love, celebrating, and being surrounded by the most important people in our lives. It was hot and sunny on that downtown rooftop, and our ceremony was everything we dreamed of. We had a string quartet on the rooftop playing Beatles love songs. My brother-in-law married us and made the ceremony so special. The reception following was filled with delicious food, refreshing drinks, and lots of dancing. We couldn’t have asked for anything more. 82

Faye and I first crossed paths working for PB&J Restaurants but had not officially met until the evening of August 6, 2013. Many of us had met up at a local establishment after work for a few drinks. Faye and I ended up sitting at the bar together discussing work and life. Faye and I both love to laugh, joke, and tell stories. I told her a story about how great I can karaoke Justin Timberlake’s songs. At that moment, “Holy Grail” by Jay-Z featuring Justin Timberlake came on. Being funny, I sang that song to her. She thought it was hilarious, but probably also thought “what is wrong with this guy?” We talked and laughed for awhile longer and then decided it was time to head home. We walked outside to the parking lot and said our goodbyes. I gave her a hug and then stole a kiss from her, which I had never done before in my life. We then went our separate ways wondering what had just happened. Faye wouldn’t give me her phone number that evening but she sent me a Facebook friend request, which I accepted. For the next month we messaged each other telling funny stories and getting to know each other. Throughout that month of messaging we went on a few dates and had more fun with each other than we had ever had with anyone else. We couldn’t get enough of each other, talking for hours, spending more time together than we should have, and eagerly waiting for the next time to see each other. What was so surprising about our new relationship was that we both realized that we had found true love and the feeling was like nothing the two of us had ever had. Towards the end of May, I planned a trip to Napa Valley with two other couples to explore the wine country and attend Bottlerock, a three day concert festival in the valley. On the morning of our third day in Napa I had planned to propose to Faye. We woke as we did the two mornings before, drank coffee, had breakfast, and then I asked Faye to walk up the road to the top of Howell Mountain where the O’shaugnessy vineyard is located. As we walked up the steep road we would stop, enjoy the view, and take a few pictures. The road was so steep and the air was so thin that Faye almost couldn’t make it up. I was so worried that we wouldn’t make it to the spot where I had planned to propose. Faye ended up making it up the mountain with a couple water breaks and we started through the vineyard to a beautiful weeping willow tree where there was a picnic table and a 360 degree view of the entire valley. Before our trip to Napa I had found something called “The ring box” which has a GoPro inside of a ring box. There is a small button on top that you press which starts the GoPro recording. I asked Faye if she wanted a drink of water and reached into my backpack, pressing the button to begin the ring box recording. I gave Faye a bottle of water and as she took a drink I put the ring box into my sweatshirt. When she was done taking a drink I stepped down off the picnic table, got down on one knee, told her how much I love her, and asked her to marry me. She was floored. Tears of joy started to pour out of her eyes and she said “Yes!” We then opened a bottle of wine and celebrated together. The rest of the day we celebrated with our friends and went to Bottlerock to enjoy the concerts. It was a day we both will never forget. EABride.com

My favorite part was right when we finished taking pictures on the side of the bridge next to Union Station. Faye was getting tired of walking in her heels and wedding dress so she asked for a piggyback ride. I had a bottle of Pierre Peters Champagne in my hand and I asked her to hold it while she was getting on my back. She jumped on my back, I started walking, and I looked back and she was taking a chug off of the bottle of champagne. She is a cool chick.

My favorite part of the wedding was the part during the ceremony where we brought all of our kids up to the altar. Pat has an 8 year old daughter named Lola, a 5 year old son named Phoenix, and I have a 7 year old daughter named Kennidy. We had a large custom candle made with 5 wicks representing the 5 of us. We gave them each a lit candle to light their special wick on the family candle. The twinkle in their eyes and their huge smiles was one of the most special experiences.

Neel & Reshma first crossed paths on a balmy New York City evening in May of 2012. With the weather finally warming up, Neel had made plans to meet his friends at the Kimberly Hotel Rooftop to enjoy the beautiful evening. As fate would have it, Reshma was heading to the same trendy rooftop to catch up with friends. As punctual as ever Neel arrived before his friends, and surprisingly so did Reshma. The crowd was picking up and Neel and Reshma bumped into each other in line. They began talking and instantly hit it off, the two lost track of time and the evening whisked away. The rooftop eventually reached capacity and their friends never made it up allowing their conversation to carry and interest to blossom. A few days later Neel asked Reshma out on their first date. Neel’s pick was for Mexican cuisine. Reshma cancelled reservations 5 times before finally agreeing to dinner at Fonda, putting Neel’s patience, or lack thereof, to the test. The first date dinner conversation included dream travel destinations, as Neel was in vacation mode because he was heading to Budapest, Prague and Vienna with his friends the next morning. Similarly, Reshma had plans to take a breather from NYC and visit her friends on the west coast. Months flew by and the two merely forgot about their encounter on the rooftop earlier that summer. August rolled around and Neel happened to be at a Yankee game with his brother and a few friends. Reshma was working as the doctor on call at Yankee Stadium and in between patients was enjoying the game. She was there with her cousin Luky who had checked in with her on Facebook at Yankee Stadium. Neel saw the Facebook check-in and instantly messaged Reshma to meet up. A couple of days later Reshma responded and it had turned out that Reshma had moved two blocks away from where Neel was living. Sparks ignited. The two hadn’t known each other for long, but jet-setters at heart, they planned a spontaneous trip to Brazil to ring in 2013. And as they say, the rest is history. In the short time that Neel and Reshma have known each other they have certainly done more than their fair share of travel. Together they have visited over 22 countries including a 40 day Southeast Asia trip. It was Reshma’s birthday week so Neel used that as a ploy to plan a grand surprise. He told Reshma to meet him for cocktails before her birthday dinner. They had officially met on a NYC rooftop but Neel figured he had to be a little discrete in planning as inviting her to the Kimberly Rooftop would not only have given away the surprise, but Reshma would have caught on. Alternatively, he picked the Hyatt Times Square and booked a suite which had a beautiful private terrace on the 52nd floor. Rose petals scattered and champagne toast ready to go, he directed Reshma towards the terrace he had decorated. Still thinking it was her birthday celebration, Reshma hadn’t pieced things together when Neel dropped to one knee and asked Reshma to marry him. But that was only half the surprise! Neel had invited friends and family from near and far to join for a private party and had booked the Skybox at Tao. The surprise worked out perfectly.

My favorite part of the day was the entrance. The Michigan flag was raised proudly, there was confetti being thrown every direction and fireworks were going off above us. It was magical!

It is hard to narrow down to one moment, but I would have to say that walking down the aisle was my favorite moment. Seeing all of the personalized signs that I had created, the beautiful Mandap with flowers, and the lake in the backdrop was breathtaking.

It was a special touch that many of our family and friends enjoyed! My grandmother, Patty, made garters for each granddaughter out of her own bridal gown. I was so excited to be able to wear mine, and felt like she was with us on our big day.

Ryan and I met our sophomore year at The University of Kansas. Mutual friends introduced us while out in Lawrence. After talking we figured out that we lived right next door to each other in our fraternity and sorority houses, and we even had a class together! Ryan and I started walking to campus, attending each other’s Alpha Chi Omega and Theta Chi functions, and began spending more and more time together. After a month of hanging out on the weekends, getting late night snacks, and going on some spontaneous adventures, my feelings for Ryan kept growing. Being the talker, I simply asked Ryan if he felt like we should be a couple. To my relief, he had the same feelings towards me, and we have been together ever since! What surprised me about my new found love was how different Ryan and I can be, but at the same time how truly similar we are. I fell in love with Ryan after the first few months of dating. I knew he was someone that would help me become the best version of myself everyday, encourage me through hard times, and make me laugh about the joys and little pleasures in life. I fell in love with the most original and genuine person I’ve ever met. After three months of dating Ryan told me he loved me, and I had never been happier! We continued dating while attending to KU and after graduation. Ryan and I dated for almost four years before he popped the question. Over winter breaks in college, Ryan and I had vacationed in Dana Point, CA. It soon turned into “our place.” Each time we traveled to Dana Point we stayed at the same hotel, enjoyed whale watching, trying new and different restaurants, and taking in the views of the Pacific. After our first year of working after graduation, Ryan suggested that we go back to “our place.” Ryan and I traveled to Dana Point in late May 2015. We were staying for five days, and on the third day something was a little different than usual. Ryan was acting distant and not wanting to do much that day. I thought to myself that he might just be tired. He suggested that we go watch the sunset and insisted that we walk to this grassy area that looked over the Pacific Ocean, to really take in the views. I was sitting on a ledge looking at the water when Ryan got down on one knee! It didn’t seem like real life, and I will never forget that moment, and how many emotions I had. My immediate reaction was to say “yes!” I hugged and kissed him while getting a little teary eyed. We now call that grassy area looking over the water “our spot.” I was ready to start planning right after we got home from California! We were a bit overwhelmed thinking about all of the details, so we decided to start the search for a wedding planner. Once we found Christine, it was smooth sailing from there on out! The theme we sought after for our wedding was romantic, timeless and elegant. Ryan and I wanted to be able to look back at our pictures and videos ten years from now and feel like the wedding could have happened yesterday. Our wedding day and night came and went faster than any other night in our lives, but it is a night we will never forget. EABride.com

We had not seen each other since the rehearsal dinner, and did not talk much while getting ready, so I was anxious to finally see her! Aly took my breath away! It’s hard to pick one memory, but one of my favorite parts of our wedding day was right after we had our grand exit leaving the church. We popped a bottle of champagne, and Ryan and I got to share our first husband and wife moment alone. We had time to share our first feelings and take a breath before the festivities began, as we rode around in a classic car!
