A Note from the Publisher » Well so far, this Kansas City summer, complete with a treacherous mix of rain and heat, is proof positive why weddings seem to slow down in late summer. For such a small booklet, it packs a serious punch… all in a convenient, easy-to-tote size. Not only does it have everyone you could want to contact listed inside, we want you to consider it your own personal tool kit. With everything from color swatches, to wedding checklists, and budget calculators, you literally have everything at your fingertips. Did I mention that there is also a list of questions in front of each section, so you know what to ask your prospective vendors? Simply put, if you haven’t picked one up, you might just be making this planning thing harder than it has to be! And for those of you who prefer technology at your fingertips instead, fear not. We have you covered too! With our new website recently launched, now all you have to do is log into eaBride.com to have full access from any of your devices. What’s more is that we want your guests in the loop too. So, feel free to create a profile that you can direct them to, with all your pertinent wedding information wrapped inside. At the risk of this letter sounding like a cheesy infomercial, I simply couldn’t contain myself! I’m just so thrilled to present you with the most comprehensive wedding resources that Kansas City has ever seen. I wouldn’t be doing you justice if I didn’t tell you all about it. (Believe me, I’d be shouting from the rooftops if I could!) So, go ahead. Grab a couple of copies, and play around on the website. As always, we love hearing your feedback, so feel free to tell us what you love… and even what you don’t. After all, we’re working to bring you the best when it concerns bridal. Happy Reading! Real Life INSIGHTS

Trend Alert:

Savory Stations Why must you feel that your dinner menu has been decided for you? Just because every other wedding serves the generic chicken and beef option, doesn't mean you have to follow suit. Get creative with your menu selections and your guests will love the fresh flavor of originality. Start by finding a creative caterer that shares your exciting vision, such as Above and Beyond Catering. Then begin a list of some of your favorite foods. Some of our favorite stations include a sushi spread, baked potato bar with all the fixin's, and a mac-and-cheese station. Ask your caterer to assist you in balancing out the meal so your guests will enjoy the fun but also have a full stomach. Lastly, attend your reception and enjoy all of your favorite foods all in one place.

Budget Buster:

Going Green:

Skip the standard officiant and ask a friend if he or she would be willing to get ordained to marry you. This will be a big savings to you and also make for a more personalized ceremony. In our eyes, that's a win, win.

Most couples don't want to sacrifice the look and feel of their wedding for the benefit of the enviroment. That doesn't make you selfish. Let's face it: sometimes environmently friendly options can be hard to find and take extra time to implement. A simple sign can make all the difference. Make, print, and frame a customized notice to your guests that can be placed around both the alcoholic and non-alcoholic drink stations at your reception.See our take on the way of wording it above.

Sweets There is no reason to limit your sweets to just a wedding cake when there are so many other delectable desserts out there! It only takes a moment for a few mouth-watering options to come to mind: strawberry macaroons, warm cookies, grandma’s home-baked pie, colorful cake pops.... just to name a few. Everyone has a sweet tooth for something. So instead of settling for cake alone, pick some of your favorite treats that guests will talk about long after the day is done.

Stress less

Unless you have given yourself 18 months to plan the wedding, chances are that at some point you will find yourself stressed out. The amount of decisions and small little details that goes into planning a wedding can overcome the joy of the engagement. We want our brides to stay cool, calm, and collected from “Yes” to “I Do”, so if you ever find yourself arguing about how tall the wedding topper should be or throwing the glue gun across the room after yet another burn, try to remember these few ways that can help you eliminate the wedding woes.

delegate prioritize reignite escape 20

The easiest way to unload some of the stress on your shoulders is to hand off some responsibilities to those that are willing to help. Ensuring that your vision is carried out is not a problem, unless it becomes a burden. Trust that your fiance can research and arrange a shuttle for the bridal party. Invite friends over to help knock out the place cards or guests favors. Limiting the load will allow you to take a deep breath while progress is still being made. If no one has come forward and offered to help, don’t feel that you are adding to their load by asking for assistance. They love you and want you to be a happy, fun-loving bride and would be glad to get included. Step back from your eight page to-do list and take time to prioritize your tasks into monthly portions. With the wedding still six months away, there is no reason to be fretting over the first dance song or what time the caterer will be arriving to set up (at least not yet). Organize your list into monthly to-do’s that you can easily manage. Don’t overwhelm yourself- take it all in stride and you will find yourself enjoying each piece a little bit more. Planning a wedding can not only cause yourself frustration but also friction within your relationship. As the wedding plot thickens, it is important to make wedding decisions together, but even more important to keep the flame between you alive. The solution is as easy as scheduling a date with each other. Yes, schedule it on the planner so that nothing can cancel it. Make reservations, get prettied up, and take a night on the town for just the two of you. Add a cherry on top by not mentioning a word about the wedding. Give yourselves a break from the decisions and discussions that there will be time for later and just enjoy each others company. If all of the small and immediate steps above have not helped to shake the stress you have been experiencing while planning, then it is time to take a vacation. Take a weekend, a full week, or even a few- whatever you need to bring you back focused, renewed, and ready to finish planning the wedding of a lifetime to the man of your dreams.

Q: Is it really necessary for me to schedule a trial appointment for my hair and make-up? A: Yes, a trial appointment is beneficial for both you and the stylist. The trial appointment allows you to iron out all of the details of your wedding day look so that things will go smoothly on the big day. It also allows the stylist the chance to practice and find your likes and dislikes.

Traci Morby Styling 913-787-5072 www.tracimorby.com traci@hairstylistkc.com

Q: What should I make sure to bring to my trial appointment? A: Bring with you any veils or headpieces you may wear for the wedding day as well as pictures of your desired look. I always recommend for my brides to bring me their Pinterest beauty board. This gives me an idea of their personal style. It also gives us a chance to go through the photos together to determine a realistic expectation. Many times a blonde haired, blue eyed bride will show me a picture of a dark complected model. We want to make you look like the best you, not someone else. Q: Should I wash my hair the morning of the wedding? A: For most styles, the answer is no. Typically day old hair will hold back combing and curl better than clean hair. This is something we will discuss at the trial appointment after the final hair style has been chosen.

22

Q: False eyelashes: Do I really need them? A: There are very few brides I don't recommend false eyelashes to. Even brides with great natural lashes end up happy that they decided to wear false lashes. The false lashes look amazing in photos if the right ones are chosen. If you opt to buy your own lashes, stick to the 'natural' or 'wispy' styles. I apply all of the eye makeup first and put false lashes on only one eye. After application, I ask the photographer to take a quick picture so the bride can see herself in the photo and choose if she likes her look better with or without the false lashes.

Q: My wedding day is going to be long. How can I make sure my makeup lasts? A: The simple answer is airbrush makeup. Airbrush makeup became popular in Hollywood for red carpet events and has finally found its way into almost every makeup artist's kit. Airbrush makeup claims to last up to 18 hours. It's hard to believe but I highly recommend coming in for a trial and putting it to the test yourself before the big day. An added bonus is its flawless finish. It looks great in photos and photographers love it.

Q: How do I make my lip color last all day? A: I always recommend to my brides to bring their own lip gloss for touch ups throughout the day. I will apply a color stain as a base, which will give you all day color. Then all you have to do is re-apply the gloss after eating or drinking.

About Traci Morby: Traci has always loved working with brides in their own environment on their wedding day, allowing the bride, her friends and family to begin the day relaxed. She strives to make brides look and feel their best on the most important day of their life.

Wedding Wise Trust your vendors to recommend other wedding professionals for the big day. Typically we have worked together for quite some time and know who knows our spaces best and who has the most fitting work for you and the wedding. Most venues have a preferred vendor list for really good reasons and starting there can help you create a “Dream Team” to manage each detail of the day and weekend so that your wedding is flawless and you get to relax and enjoy all of the special moments and details that you put so much effort into. -Samie LaForce, Hilton President

It is important when selecting an event venue to view and learn about the venue’s in-house lighting capabilities. Lighting can set a mood and create energy. It can even replace décor, saving you money in that area of your budget. -Katie Schillare, The Midland

If this Spring and Summer has taught us anything, it is to always have a “Plan B”. If there are any hopes for an outdoor ceremony, reception, or even just bridal party photos, make sure to make a backup plan and communicate it with your family, friends, and vendors prior to the day of the wedding so everyone won’t be left scrambling. -Britney Beach-Jones Plush Productions

34

Hire a planner!!! Even if it’s just for day-of coordination, your stressed out self will thank you later. On her big day, no bride wants to worry about where extra trash can liners can be found. It’s your day to enjoy, so let a professional carry the stress, while you worry only about rockin the dress! -Christie Scott, EA Bride

Put your name, address, and telephone numbers inside and outside each piece of luggage – use covered luggage tags to avoid casual observation of your identity. You can also use an alternative address, such as the bank address to avoid anyone knowing your address while away from home, but having a deliverable address available. You are encouraged to limit checked luggage to two suitcases per person. -Robert Riesmeyer, Travel Benefits by Design

Make sure your bartenders are “TIPS” certified – formally trained not only in checking ID’s but can also tactfully handle a situation if a guest has had too much to drink. -Mary Rodriguez, Diamond Girls Bartending

At Staley Farms Golf Club, we have a lot of brides choosing to serve dinner buffet style at their reception. We recommend that brides number the tables in order for the DJ to release tables one-by-one to approach the buffet when dinner is served. It is a minute detail that will really pay dividends in keeping the evening flowing and your guests happy. -Paige Roberts, Staley Farms

Try not to get upset when a vendor is booked full on the day of your wedding. Wether you waited to long to book, or another jumped the gun, we sometimes have to turn away clients. It isn’t our wish, but it wouldn’t be fair to those that have already booked. -Wanda Brizendine, Hy-Vee Catering Blue Springs

Choosing a wedding photographer is a big decision. Not only are there so many to choose from, but your photos are what you have to take away from your big day once its all said and done. In searching for the perfect photographer, make sure you choose someone whose work you admire, but also someone that you feel you “click” with. After all, most couples end up spending more time with their photographers on their wedding day than they do with each other! Meet with your photographer in person if possible, and if you are planning from out of town, schedule a phone meeting or Skype session. Keep in mind the photographer is the one who will be capturing your emotions, your relationship, and your love. The better you know them and they know you, the more it will show in your photographs! -Beth Hodge, Melissa & Beth Photography

When considering entertainment for your wedding, always keep in mind that you DJ or Band is the most vocal component present at your event. With this bing said, you may want to choose someone that fits you and your fiancee’s personality and style! It’s your day so choose someone that represents you! -Jon Bartlett, Remix DJ’s

Make sure that even if there was no big fancy fun wedding to plan that you’d still marry THIS guy. (that’s all that matters anyway). -Tamara Hudson, Encore Boutique

When shopping for that perfect wedding gown, you must get out of your comfort zone and be open to exploration! My customers are consistently surprised when they expand beyond the cuts and styles they are accustomed to. This willingness to explore helps them land on a fantastic piece they previously would not have considered. Keep in mind that something you saw in the magazine or on someone else might not compliment your body type the same way. It’s good to have something in mind, but be flexible and you will find your dream dress that also makes you look like a dream bride. -Anya Puzankova, La Demure

Although a well-organized bride could coordinate all the details of their big day, it is highly recommended to hire a professional wedding planner. If money is a concern, even having a detail-task oriented family member or friend is better than doing it yourself. This is your day, you should be enjoying it, not worrying if the lights are going to be dimmed at the right time, or if all the gifts were collected at the end of the night. A reputable wedding planning company is in tune with the needs of the bride and the abilities of the vendors. They ensure everything runs smoothly. Many of them offer packages that are much more budget friendly than you could imagine! - Kimberly Kruse, Arrowhead

Don’t miss the meal! By the time big day arrives you will have spent hours selecting and budgeting for what is served at the reception. Don’t get so caught up in photos, greeting guests, and protocol that you and your spouse don’t sit together and enjoy this first meal as a married couple. -Cindy Grunik, It’s Easy As Pie

Cookie-cutter weddings are a thing of the past. Today’s bride is daring to be different, in hopes of having a wedding to remember. We wanted to reach for the stars, and went beyond the Pinterest boards to find rituals from around the world. Try a few of these on for size, and ensure a celebration that your guests won’t soon forget… IF you can dare to go there.

Blackening the Bride: A pre-marital tradition imposed on many Scottish brides includes tying her to a tree, where she will have to endure her nearest and dearest throwing at and covering her in the grossest goo they can get their hands on. Tradition states that a bride who can handle this, can handle anything, even marriage. When women in India are born under a specific astrological sign, they are called Mangliks, and considered cursed. The curse affects their husband, leading to his early demise. The only way it can be broken is for the bride to first marry a tree that can then be destroyed, before she can live her happily ever after with the man of her dreams. Whereas we thought it was daunting enough for a man to ask his betrothed’s father for her hand, in Fiji, the stakes are higher. They also have to present their future father-in-law with a whales tooth, as a sign of his commitment. For those looking to channel a Kenyan tradition, it is customary for the brides father to bless the couple by spitting on her head and chest before she leaves with her new husband.

5.

Swedish weddings are full of affection. Tradition states here, that whenever a bride or groom leaves their table to use the restroom, the one left gets smothered in kisses from the guests.

6.

Irish tradition dictates that a bride’s feet must always be on the ground when she is dancing, lest evil fairies will come and sweep her away.

7.

See how your guests react when you ask them to channel French Polynesian culture. With this custom, all the bride’s relatives will lay side-by-side and face down, while the bride and groom walk across this human rug!

8.

For those with a strong German heritage, it is customary to ask guests to bring new dishes to the wedding…That they will then smash, to ward off evil spirits.

9.

Some African villages still instill the practice of having a village elder (or the bride’s mother) stay with the couple the first night of their marriage to “show them the ropes.” Now, that might be a little too close for comfort!

Advice from the Aisle From the Bride:

From the Couple:

I think the best advice is to live in the moment. You spend so much time planning this day that it’s important to enjoy it when it is there, and take it all in so you can process it later. It’s also important to eat something! We missed dinner because we were taking photos, and combined with a few drinks and the heat, it caught up to me by the end of the night. So many people told me this, and I had fully intended to follow this advice but it just didn’t happen. -Mariah

Our advice is to remember that the wedding is just the beginning. Use each moment of tension or stress to practice showing grace and honesty to one another. After all, you will need the practice: you are signing up for a lifetime together! Cherish the commitment, the celebration, and the relationship. Your spouse is the only family you get to choose. Remind them why you chose them. - Parker & Alexa

Don’t stress or worry too much about the little things. Everything will turn out great and nobody knows about the little details except for you. At the end of the day the most important thing is you’re marrying the love of your life. Enjoy the day and soak it all in because it will go by fast and odds are you will never have all your favorite people all in the same place ever again. -Lindsey Deep breaths go a long way! There were several times that I found myself overwhelmed throughout the day- not with something upsetting, but emotional or happy moments that were bringing me to tears. In an effort to keep my flawless makeup in tact (at least until after the ceremony) I kept reminding myself to take a deep breath. It helped me from becoming a blubbering mess while walking down the aisle, saying my vows, and dancing with my dad during the reception. -Britney

40

We d d i n g W i s d o m f ro m N e w l y w e d s

If we had to do it over we would not change a thing! We loved all the DIY work that we did. Everywhere we looked we saw personal and family details. Our advice would be to do as much as you are comfortable tackling on your own. It will save you a lot of money and when the big day finally arrives you will see personal touches everywhere. It will make everything so much more special and you can take pride in how beautiful your day is. Your wedding day will be truly, uniquely yours! -Marcus & Megan Definitely find someone to help. Our coordinator (and my mom) made the planning so easy and stress-free. There are so many details to decide on, but at the end of the day, no one’s going to remember what the napkin rings look like. Make it a special day for you and your guests. -Daniel & Alison

That’s a Wrap

Picture it: Long after your last dance, you’ve wrapped up the top tier of your cake in hopes that it’s still edible a year from now, and you’ve preserved your dress in hopes that your daughter will don it down her own aisle one day. So, now all that remains are fleeting memories and the photo album. Yet, unless you want to deal with the awkward stares, your photographs can’t be worn everywhere. Introducing La Demure. It’s our idea of wearing your wedding again… and again. Whether you’re looking for elegant sophistication, conservative coverage, winter warmth, or anything in between, these couture bridal wraps were built with you in mind. Designed with a European flair, they can hold their own next to the most glamorous gown. But, perhaps our favorite feature is that their versatility allows them to fit nearly any form, for any function. Whether you want to doll up a cocktail or bridesmaids dress, or even to take your casual look up a few levels, all you need is a La Demure wrap. This is the wedding keepsake you can keep on using. Now, THAT’s a wrap! For more information on La Demure, check out their website at www.lademurewraps.com.

Q &A BRIDESMAID DRESSES

A great wedding is all about the details. From shopping for the dress to the invitations, there are decisions to make at every turn. One of the most stressful times for a bride, is deciding on bridesmaid dresses. For many brides, it can be more challenging than selecting their own wedding gown. It is important that you manage your expectations from the very beginning and keep the process streamlined and simple, allowing for it be a fun and memorable experience for everyone.

Q A Q A Q A

Should I take all my bridesmaids together to pick out the perfect dress? No. Too many opinions can make the process long and stressful. Instead, try taking one girl who may be harder to fit. Narrow the choices to three dresses before getting the majority opinion. Should I tell my bridesmaids to go buy whatever dress they like in an attempt to be the cool and carefree bride, hoping to make it easier for them? No. Your friends ultimately want YOU, the bride, to be happy with the dress. Take the pressure off them. Save them hours of stressful shopping and narrow the choices for them. Should I be mindful of price, even though my bridesmaids can afford it. Yes. Be sensitive to budget. Never assume you know how much your friends can afford. If you have caviar taste, offer to pay at least half.

Q

Is it impossible for all my bridesmaids to look and feel great in the same dress?

A

No. Most bridesmaid designers are aware of differing body types in the average bridal party, and have styles to accommodate. Ask your bridal consultant, they have seen these dresses on many shapes and sizes and can make suggestions.

Q A Q A

Should I order my bridesmaid dresses in a timely manner? Absolutely. Your girl’s time is valuable too. You don’t want your bridesmaids running around for alterations and accessories at the last minute. Having dresses arrive no later than a month before your big day will ease the stress. If I decide to have my bridal party wear different dress styles, is it possible for the colors and fabric to match? Yes. Bridesmaid designers now offer a lot of different styles and necklines in the same color and fabric. Narrow the choice to dresses that come in the color and fabric you want. Then let your maids pick the style they are most comfortable with. EABride.com 55

Q A

Will my bridesmaid dresses require alterations? Yes. Most bridesmaid dresses are ordered to the closest manufacture size, and not cut to your bridesmaid’s exact measurements. Make sure your wedding party understands this, and budget time and money accordingly.

Q

Is there an added benefit to buying my bridesmaids dresses from the salon where I purchased my bridal gown?

A

In most cases, yes. Most bridal salons will offer discounts to their loyal customers. Working with your bridal consultant, who already understands the vision of your special day, can be a huge advantage.

Q A

One of my bridesmaids is expecting, will I be able to find a matching bridesmaid dress for her? It shouldn’t be a problem. It has become more common for designers to offer select styles in maternity. Bridal salons are used to working with sizing for expectant bridesmaids and will know the best options based on their due date.

Q A Q A

Am I getting a good deal if alterations are included in the price of the dress? No, this is generally not the case. You know the saying, “Nothing is free.” If alterations are included in the price, you are most likely paying for the price of the dress with the overall average cost of alterations worked in. I found bridesmaids dresses online for a really great price. Might this be too good to be true? Listen to your inner voice. The bridal industry has issued a “Buyer Beware” alert concerning vendors that are strictly on-line retailers. More often than not, these are scams and the buyer has no recourse when the wrong dresses, in the wrong sizes arrive. Sometimes, they don’t arrive at all. Not worth the stress, money, and loss in time. Christa Smith is a long time bridal industry expert and wedding dress consultant. She has spent the last fifteen years in the bridal industry and has seen how difficult it is for brides to navigate the process of selecting the right bridesmaid dress.

DESTINATION SPOTLIGHT :

Portugal

When it comes time to plan your honeymoon, or even a destination wedding, we dare you to dream big, and consider Portugal. Perhaps one of the world’s more underappreciated countries, this European state is pretty spectacular, if we say so ourselves. Pack the perfect picnic lunch and immerse yourself in the middle of Cao valley, where you can feast your eyes on rock drawings that date back 25,000 years. If you don’t fright with heights, then perhaps a jaw-dropping flight over the Douro Valley in a 3-seater Cessna plane is prime. Between cathedrals, castles, and 17th century architecture, there is no shortage of adventure awaiting you. And when you just want to relax and recount the day’s events, we recommend the boutique ambiance of Casas do Coro in the Village of Marialva. Between breathtaking views, and stellar service, this is an oasis you’ll actually want to retreat to… time and time again. All we can say is, grab your passport, and go see Portugal!

Mariah’s STORY

L O C AT I O N

mildale farm, ks

Our wedding story began with a gorgeous, sunset proposal while sailing in Florida. Troy did such an amazing job of making the day so special and unique. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect proposal. As we started planning our wedding, Troy and I knew we wanted our wedding day to be a reflection of us: a fun day filled with personal details, love, family, and friends. We both grew up in small towns but now live in the city, so we knew immediately that we wanted a venue that our families would be comfortable attending but wasn’t considered “rustic”. This led us to the beautiful barn at Mildale Farms. It was the perfect blend of upscale meets Southern chic that we were going for. The venue then set the tone for all of our other décor choices. I wanted our color palette to be soft and romantic in shades of blush, peach, accents of dusty blue, and neutrals. I had a clear vision of what I wanted to incorporate in our special day, and the items that I wasn’t able to find locally we ended up making. My dad is a carpenter by trade and owns a saw-mill so he was kind enough to make all the wooden boxes for the tables and the arbor, which Troy and I stained. Our outdoor ceremony began at five o’clock where the bridal party walked to live music organized by Troy’s sister. When it was my turn, my two brothers kissed me good luck and opened the doors for my dad to walk me down the aisle to “A Thousand Years” on the violin and cello. It was one of the most special moments of my life. The day was already super crazy, but in that moment everything went quiet. I thought I would be super nervous but I was so calm and could only focus on Troy! Troy’s Dad did a short reading and his childhood pastor drove from Iowa so that he could marry us. We kept the ceremony very simple and short. After the ceremony, we had a happy hour for guests with live Bluegrass music by Rural Grit. After photos we rejoined our guests, we cut the cake. Instead of having one large cake we had several smaller cakes and pies set out on different cake stands to make a dessert buffet. Our guests loved trying all the different options. After dessert, we went straight to the first dances. For our first dance we danced to La Vie En Rose by Louis Armstrong. The day of our wedding was amazing. I wish that I could go back and live it one more time just to soak all the things I missed since it seemed to go by so fast! I loved spending the morning getting ready with all my girlfriends and family. One of my favorite moments is my mom helping me into the dress of my dreams. The day was filled with so many special moments- my brothers opening the double doors as my dad walked me down the aisle, Troy’s sister, Heidi, playing the violin during the ceremony, saying our vows under the beautiful arbor we helped make, our first dance, sharing dances with our mom and dad, and dancing the night away with all our friends and family. Troy and I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day!

special pieces The charm on my bouquet is picture is of my older sister, Riki, who died in a car crash when I was in college. I included a little studded “R from a necklace she always wore and a charm with her picture inside. It still brings me to tears when I think about having her with me on my wedding day!

There were a few moments throughout the wedding where the day slowed down and I felt like I was actually able to process what was happening. These favorite moments of mine include: standing waiting for Mariah at the arbor, sitting with Mariah while our band Rural Grit played a song just for us, and dancing our first dance together.

My favorite part of our wedding day besides saying “I Do” was our first dance. It was so romantic and so nice to just be in the moment with each other. It’s also a tangible part of our wedding day that we can recreate by dancing to it year after year.

special pieces On the big day, I carried a purse of my mom’s that has been used by all the ladies in our family. I also wore pearls that my father had given me as a wedding present. My husband wore an antique pocket watch that had belonged to his greatgrandfather. We wanted our wedding to feel fancy, but not stuffy. Romantic, but not overly feminine. Dan Meiner conceptualized our day, and the end result was more than what we had ever imagined.

Alison’s

STORY

L O C AT I O N

kansas city, mo

A long time ago - 1993 to be exact - there was a girl and a boy who met for the first time. The girl had a crush on the boy. The boy had a crush on the girl. But they were too shy to express how they felt about one another. Instead, she secretly took pitures of him at parties and listened to tapes she knew he liked. He told anecdotes to his friends about how she looked like Elizabeth Shue from Karate Kid and had the biggest, brightest smile. Not so long after they’d met, the girl moved away while the boy remained behind. The girl grew up and had her own adventures. The boy grew up and had adventures of his own. They both led fulfilling lives, but something was still missing for the both of them.... Twenty years later, the girl came back to where she’d started. The girl’s longtime friend and the boy’s long-time friend made certain that their paths would cross once more. That’s when the girl and the boy met for the second time. They shared stories of their lives, laughs, loves and losses. They became fast friends and when the time was right, they became much more. She doted upon him endlessly, and he to her. They made new memories together; lived, laughed, and loved. It didn’t take long for the boy to realize that the girl was everything he’d ever wanted and everything he didn’t know he’d needed (but did). After building up enough courage, the boy proposed to the girl on April 12, 2014. The boy prepared a picnic for the two of them on the lawn of the Nelson Akins. They had previously discussed the notion of getting married, but that was all. The boy asked the girl, “Would you still marry me?” And the girl replied, “Yes, all I would need you to do is ask.” He replied, “What if I asked you today?” and he pulled a gorgeous ring out of the picnic basket. Naturally, she said yes! Gleefully, the boy and girl began planning their wedding and sought out the help of Lindsay Howes of Simple Elegance for some planning assistance. The wedding day was stress-free and was complete with all of the big and small details that the boy and girl cherished.

My favorite part was seeing Alison in her wedding dress for the first time. I was facing a set of glass windows in the entry area and saw Alison’s silhouette as she entered the room. I had to keep myself from turning around too early, as I could hear the photographer and our family taking pictures as she entered. As she asked me to turn around, my stomach filled with butterflies. Needless to say, she was absolutely radiant and beautiful. She comforted me with a loving kiss that set into motion the rest of the evening (and our lives) together.

My favorite has to be when we forgot to exchange our rings during the ceremony. I think our nerves got the better of us because as our officiant started to say “I now pronounce you…” I quickly got her attention and showed her I still had my husband’s ring in my hand. We couldn’t help but start laughing, and as the audience realized what had happened, pretty soon everyone was laughing. We felt it really was a fun, organic moment that truly made our ceremony special. EABride.com

STORY

Marcus and I met at a local rock climbing gym called Monster Mountain. I had just gotten back from teaching in New Zealand and Marcus had just returned from a medical mission trip in Belize. We were not looking for a relationship at the time but it was just meant to be and we could not of been any happier together. We were dating for 2 years before we got engaged. Marcus planned a wonderful, thoughtful proposal. I was in my second year of teaching and he knew how much I loved my school and students. So along with the support of my principal, coworkers and students he pulled off a wonderful proposal. I was sitting in my classroom talking with my principal about an upcoming literacy night when my kindergarten students came back early from PE. They were each holding a letter that spelled out “Megan will you marry me?” And then Marcus followed them in and then proposed. I was so surprised and overcome with joy! Marcus, our family, and I did all of the planning and DIY work. We hired a day of coordinator, which was a wonderful decision. We planned the whole time we were engaged, we loved dreaming of all the details. We picked the Historic Taylor Barn because we would always drive past it on the way to Marcus’ mom house and would comment on how lovely it was. After we visited, we fell in love with the look and laid back feeling. One of the most important of picking the venue was that they let you have your own catering... we had to have OK Joes BBQ! The whole wedding was based on “home.” We knew we would be moving away from Kansas City and wanted to have as many reminders of home and the things that we love. We carried this throughout our wedding with little details everywhere. We had a classic Midwestern windmill for our alter, Boulevard and Free State beer as well as BBQ. Every little detail reminded us of home and our families that love us. My grandma made the table numbers and table runners. Marcus’ mom made the cake. If we had to do it over we would not change a thing! We loved all the DIY work that we did. Everywhere we looked we saw personal and family details.

My favorite part of the day was seeing Megan in her wedding dress for the first time at the ceremony. I know it has fallen out of favor with some, and is generally thought of as impractical (usually due to time constraints and demand for more time for photography, video, etc.), but there is nothing I can say that will do justice to how completely overcome and blown away I was when I first laid eyes on Megan in her gown. It made the entire day so much more special and meaningful for me.

My favorite part of the wedding was how perfectly everything came together. The day was so laid back and fun for all of our guest and ourselves. My husband and I were so happy together and so were our guests.

Parker pauses every time someone asks about his favorite part of the day. “Everything” is the usual answer, since isolating one wedding moment is akin to eating only one layer out of piece of tiramisu; it has no special flavor out of context. Instead, he says that his favorite part is that we experienced the entire day together. From our “first look” photos to the sparkler sendoff that night, we only spent the half hour before the ceremony apart. There was no built-up nervousness because we had quiet conversations throughout the day and stayed in the moment together. The day is a shared memory of being by each other’s side.

The sweetest moment, which was a favorite moment for the both of us, was the toasts. It was the first time either of us fell to tears that day, simply hearing the encouragement and support of family and friends. It was a beautiful night to celebrate love and commitment and the support of a community.

special pieces The reception dinner tables were situated as a box around the dance floor to make everyone an insider. On top of the tables set unique floral arrangements that Parker’s mother and aunt had created in their family living room, and the vases lined on top beautiful reclaimed wood runners. Our family surprised us with Shatto milk in glass bottles to accompany the cake, and we surprised everyone with a Spanish-hit bachata number as our first dance under the swinging lights. 92

STORY

L O C AT I O N

Overland Park, Ks

Our story could have begun the first day of kindergarten when we officially met, but Parker stayed far too busy during the following 17 years building potato cannons, and my nose was too stuck in a book to see three feet in front of me. Instead we had our first real conversation when we ran into each other at our home church in Kansas City. Parker was just moving home from Barcelona, and I was living in Chicago finishing my last semester of undergrad. During the next visit, we grabbed a drink. I learned all about this passionate, soccer playing, Spanish-speaking, preschool teacher who is unafraid to grow and change. At that point we had a conversation about seriously pursuing a long-distance relationship, but we were taking a gamble as I was planning for a year in Peru just a few short months away. I didn’t get on the plane to Peru. I rebooked my ticket a handful of times, finding reason after reason to stay stateside longer. Parker and I flew/drove/bussed/train-ed back and forth every few weeks to see each other and spent the most sleepdeprived season of our lives talking on the phone until 4:00 am. Ten months had passed since that summer. I was sulky that Parker had been acting so strangely over the past two weeks. I recounted my woes to a good friend as we walked around the Lincoln Park Conservatory in Chicago. As she consoled me about my phone-flaky boyfriend, she turned me down a stone path by the lily pond. There stood my boyfriend at the top of the steps, grinning slyly with his hand hidden behind his back. I forgot my friend was there as I walked up the stone stairs. I said yes. I truly thought that we were the only ones in the park until I heard cheering coming from the bushes. One by one, my mom, sister, pastor, roommates, and friends shook off the leaves and came out to hug me as I let mascara run down my face on the 90-degree Chicago day. It was June 28th, 2014, when Parker slipped his great grandmother’s engagement ring on my finger. The following week I moved back to Kansas City. The 14 weeks between the proposal and our wedding were incredibly hectic and fun. We wanted our wedding to represent what we value in our marriage, not just a beautiful party. It had to communicate that we see our marriage as truly ordained by God, and that we are here to love and affirm others, even on our day. We would not succumb to materialism in the name of elegance; instead, we would choose décor to create a warm, cheery atmosphere during our breezy evening wedding in a public park. We would go local on everything possible. We would consider what our parents preferred, but ultimately the celebration of our marriage would look like us. When the big day came, we hung lanterns from a tree and set up simple wooden chairs. Friends coordinated a vintage leather-bound notebook with signatures and Polaroids of our guests as they arrived. I walked down the aisle to the instrumental version of “Amsterdam” by Gregory Alan Isakov simply because it is lovely. A close friend officiated our ceremony, and two friends hummed a cappella “Amsterdam” as we exchanged vows. 93 EABride.com

STORY

L O C AT I O N

kansas city, mo

We met in the spring of 2007 through a mutual friend while attending the University of Kansas. We dated for two years and bonded over Ryan’s English Bulldog, Clarence. After a year of working in the real world, I decided to move to Hawaii with a couple of college friends. We both agreed that the distance would be too much, so we split. We kept in touch and remained friends throughout that time; and upon moving back to Kansas City we would run into each other at KU football games and out on the Plaza. It was about two and half years after we parted ways that they ran into each other while out with separate groups of friends. We ended up spending the entire night talking, laughing, and reminiscing with one another. After that night we both realized that there was still something there and things picked up right where they left, except this time it was even better and Clarence was glad to have his “mom” back in his life permanently. The day before Ryan proposed he asked me if I wanted to take our dog for a walk the next day at Liberty Memorial. The weather had been beautiful all week and he wanted to take advantage of it before it suddenly changed, which it often does in Kansas City. I thought this sounded like a good idea and didn’t think much of it until the next day. Ryan rarely asks to do anything in advance. He is more of a spur of the moment person and would never plan to walk the dog a full 24 hours in advance. I was hopeful that he would propose, but then thought to myself “Nobody gets engaged on a Wednesday.” I was just sure it would happen on a weekend. So we got to Liberty Memorial and walked around a bit and played fetch with Clarence with the tennis ball. Then we made our way over to a bench to stop and take a break and I then realized that Ryan was pulling something out of his jacket pocket. It turned out to be a ring box. Ryan got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I don’t remember much of what was said in those moments, other than the first thing out of my mouth was “Are you serious?” And that was quickly followed by a “Yes!” I knew from the beginning that I wanted to do most of the wedding planning myself. I’m fairly organized, a bit of a control freak, and pay attention to detail so I knew I could handle most of the big things on my own. I decided to hire a day of coordinator to execute everything on our big day, because I wanted myself and family to be able to fully enjoy the entire day and not worry about any of the details. The day could not have been more perfect for us. Everything went smoothly and we were even ahead of schedule in the morning while the girls were getting ready. It rained a little bit in the morning, but when it was time for the outdoor photos it was nice, cool, and overcast outside. Leading up to the wedding I was worried about the possibility of rain and being too hot, but thankfully Mother Nature was on my side that day. Everything about our wedding day was amazing. It was a dream come true to have all of our favorite people in one room celebrating with us.

My favorite part of the wedding day was seeing my bride’s face at the First Look. It took a lot of time, effort, and energy leading up to that day, and the second I saw her on our big day I knew it was going to be amazing. She had the biggest smile and did not look stressed at all. Every second after that was an absolute blast.

The ceremony was definitely my favorite part of the entire day. Everything about it was perfect. Walking down the aisle with my father, realizing that the church was packed with people that were there to celebrate us, seeing my groom standing at the end of the aisle, saying our vows in front of our family and friends, noticing the beautiful flower arrangements, and taking in everything the Pastor said. Every single detail was even more perfect than I could have ever imagined. I will never forget standing up there with a permanent smile on face because I was so happy to be marrying my best friend.
