How it felt to win the FIELD Challenge Vienna EAGE congratulates the FIELD Challenge 2016 winning team from IFP School, France. The team of Mohd Rais Rasedy Bin Roslan, Errazi Ben Ahmed, Valentina Caceres, Jawad Ghezal, and David Prigent report on their experience.

This year’s FIELD Challenge winners during Vienna 2016.

First and foremost, we would like to congratulate EAGE for successfully organizing the 78th EAGE Conference & Exhibition 2016 in Vienna. This year, we were truly delighted and proud of our team for being able to bring back the first prize of the annual FIELD Challenge competition to IFP School; the steps to success were not easy. To recap on our amazing journey, we were ranked last in the first two stages (Essay and Abstract respectively) before making our comeback to become the champions in Vienna. We must thank all those at IFP School and in the industry, the technical and non-technical members of the E&P faculty in IFP School, various consultants and professors outside of IFP School, plus friends and family for their advice and support. The competition itself provided us with an opportunity to show our very

best combined efforts on the FIELD development plan by implementing the theoretical and technical skills developed at the university. In Vienna, we were also very excited to meet members of other teams during the FIELD Challenge presentations. Sharing and comparing results verbally after all presentations were completed gave us new ideas and insights. It was unfortunate that we were not able to see the other team’s presentations, as we were the last ones to go in front of the judges. We hope that in the future all the presentations will be accessible from EAGE video records. The FIELD Challenge competition allowed us to develop the skills to work well in a team situation as well as individually when specific tasks were given to each person. We also learnt how to better manage our time, given tight university schedules of classes, assignments and examinations. We were able

to deliver high quality results before each due date, plus know precisely when and how to ask for help. Through this, we proved to be very adaptive and managed to work well under pressure. Our team represented people from four different continents (Europe, Africa, South America and Asia) and it was considered to be the most diverse team. We enjoyed being in a multicultural environment especially during the Student’s Evening in Vienna meeting various people from many parts of the world, mainly our fellow young engineers and geoscientists. We believe that networking is one of the best ways for a successful career and thus, through various activities in Vienna this year, we were able to add new colleagues into our oil and gas networks including young professionals from different universities and institutes, senior engineers and geoscientists, and human resources and top management in various companies. Apart from that, we enjoyed the professional technical talks hearing about new trends in the oil and gas industry and how the technology is implemented in the industry. From our visits to various booths in the exhibition halls, we educated ourselves about the latest technology available in the current oil and gas market. It is clear that advances in technology have made it possible for us to explore and produce more in areas than was previously possible.
