14 through Sunday, July 16.

Competitors, spectators, supporters, and volunteers are invited to the Lorenzo State Historic Site from Friday, July 14 through Sunday, July 16 for the 45th Lorenzo Driving Competition (LDC).

Since its inception, the annual event has attracted participants and onlookers from near and far, establishing itself as one of Cazenovia’s signature summer events and one of the premier carriage pleasure driving shows in the United States.

According to Carol Buckhout, president of the LDC Board of Directors, approximately 60 competitors had entered the 2023 show as of June 27.

“As a carriage driver and a community member, it’s a pleasure to keep this long-standing Cazenovia tradition alive,” said Buckhout. “I work with a group

of dedicated board and show committee members that plan for this annual event all year long. We owe a great deal of thanks to the many show volunteers and financial sponsors that enthusiastically show their support without question.

I invite everyone to join us at our Sapphire Jubilee to appreciate our community’s heritage.”

Friday The show will kick off at 8 a.m. with the Timed Country Drive followed by driven dressage starting at 10 a.m.

Friday’s competitors will also have the chance to drive in two different obstacle courses.

The evening classes will begin at 4:30 p.m. in the Main Ring and will include two signature competitions. The first is the Antique Vehicle Turnout, which features carriages built prior to 1940. The

Former Caz residents commemorate first date at the Brae Loch Inn

Sixty-one years ago, former Cazenovia residents Ellie and Fred Weir went on their first date at the Brae Loch Inn.

Just over a year later, on July 13, 1963, the couple married. Nearly every summer since then, the Weirs have returned to the Brae Loch to commemorate their first date and celebrate their wedding anniversary.

“We always request the downstairs corner ‘lovers’ booth’ where we had our first date,” said Ellie. “In the early ‘lean’ years, we might only have had a dessert or appetizer.”

In more recent years, the couple has enjoyed trying a variety of different things on the menu, according to Ellie.

At the time of the Weirs’ first

date, Ellie — who was known then as Ellie DeWitt — had just completed her senior year at Syracuse University and finished her student teaching placement in Fred’s classroom at Jamesville Elementary School in the Jamesville-DeWitt Central School District.

“We waited for that first date until I graduated and was no longer Fred’s student teacher,” Ellie said. “. . . We were very careful about that.”

Although Fred and Ellie weren’t breaking any rules by going on a date, the couple opted to dine somewhere they were unlikely to be recognized.

“I asked people [for recommendations], and they said the Brae Loch was out of town and was a very nice restaurant,” said Fred.

“Somehow I got the money together to go.”

Once they were married, the

Weirs resided in Fayetteville before moving to Cazenovia, where they spent the next 35 years.

Ellie taught in the FayettevilleManlius Central School District for a couple of years before becoming a stay-at-home mom to a son and a daughter who both went through the Cazenovia school system.

Although they are now residents of Florida, the Weirs have only missed about four of their anniversary dinners at the Brae Loch, each time because they were out of the country. “We’re romantic and sentimental, I guess,” Ellie said when describing the couple’s dedication to continuing their tradition.

In just a couple of weeks, the Weirs will be back at the Brae Loch celebrating their 60th anniversary.

Cazenovia resident introduces New York state-focused craft beer distributor

On June 26, Cazenovia

resident Chad Meigs held a press conference at The Hops Spot in Syracuse to announce the launch of Third Space Distribution, an early-stage startup working to raise awareness of New York State craft breweries by representing their brands and increasing their distribution statewide.

Based at 2100 Park St. in Syracuse, Third Space Distribution is in the process of building a portfolio of NYS beer brands that it can supply to bars, restaurants, and shops in Central New York and eventually across the state.

According to a June 25 news release announcing the press conference, Third Space Distribution is the only beer distributor working exclusively with NYS craft breweries.

The company’s portfolio currently features Triphammer Bierwerks, Haberle Brewing Company, Butternuts Beer & Ale, Pressure Drop Brewing, Burning Banjo Beer, Roc Brewing Co., Big aLICe Brewing, and Old Klaverack Brewing Co.

As of June 28, Third Space had 75 open accounts in Onondaga and Madison Counties, including local establishments such as Caz Sports Bowl, Caz Pizza, and Due Passi Pizzeria

in Cazenovia; Mad Tacos in Nelson; and Woody’s Country Store in New Woodstock. Additional locations include The LaFayette Inn, Mazzye’s Meats in Liverpool, Harvey’s Garden and Funk N Waffles in Syracuse, Now & Later on Tipperary Hill, Toss & Fire in Camillus, and Trappers II

Pizza & Pub in Minoa.

According to Meigs, the number of accounts is growing weekly.

Meigs entered the craft beer business as a hop farmer and processor in 2013 with the opening of The Bineyard in Cazenovia.

At the time, Meigs, who was a former software engineer based in Boston, had recently relocated to CNY with his wife and had decided to make a career pivot.

“I asked myself the question, ‘What do people do in Central New York?’” Meigs said.

“[The answer was] agriculture. I wasn’t about to start a dairy farm, so I decided on hops because I really like beer, and I just started homebrewing and growing my own hops at our home.”

During the COVID19 pandemic, Meigs launched a direct-to-consumer, e-commerce marketplace called Drink NY Craft (DNYC), drinknycraft.co m

His vision was to give every beer-drinking New Yorker the opportunity to get hard-to-find NYcrafted beers delivered

straight to their doorsteps and to expand the reach of local breweries hoping to take the leap into the commercial realm.

Although he officially launched DNYC in October 2020, Meigs was unable to sell beer through the online platform until he received State Liquor Authority approval almost one full year later.

“That whole time I had to be 100 percent ready, including having a warehouse and everything,” he said. “[There are] lots of barriers to entry for starting a beer distribution company, which is why nobody is doing it.”

After repeatedly hearing his hop customers and brewery owners express frustration about the challenges of selfdistribution and market access, Meigs took steps to build on DNYC with the launch of Third Space Distribution.

“The first phase of the business was the direct-to-consumer channel, and that was about 1.5 years ago,” Meigs said. “Since then, we have launched what I’m calling our ‘Traditional Retail Distribution’ line-of-business, which is business-to-business. The press conference was to let the public know that we’ve launched this second phase of the business.”

Meigs hopes that Third Space Distribution will help further his

Chad

mission of getting people in NYS to drink more NY-made craft beer.

“One of the challenges for small craft beer producers in NYS is access to market,” Meigs said in the June 25 press release. “We are offering

another option for the NYS breweries to distribute in markets that they may otherwise not have the resources to get their products in front of customers. Distribution is one of the keys to help NYS craft beer

third space

increase market share in our backyard.”

Across the country, about 13 percent of beers sold are from craft breweries, according to statistics from the Brewers Association, In New

Madison County Youth Leadership conference held in Caz

Young people from across Madison County headed to the Hampton Inn in Cazenovia recently for the Madison County Youth Leadership Conference. BRiDGES, a prevention agency in Madison County, hosted the day for middle and high school students to come together and learn leadership skills, build connections, and to plan what activities their club will host during the 23-24 school year.

Zonta, F.O.R. (Friends of Rachel), Teens for a Better World, and SADD were among the school-based clubs represented. The conference included team building activities, a presentation on leadership, and the highlight of the conference was interactive activity kits put together by BRiDGES’ staff. Several programs offered toolkits of prevention-based activities including kits for bullying prevention month, red ribbon week, and mental health awareness month. Instructions for the activity and all the materials required were laid out at tables so students could experience what it would be like to host this activity at school. Students collaborated on a large poster writing their “why” for not using substances, colored in an extra-large coloring sheet for stress relief, used chalk to write prevention focused messages on chalk-

board paper laid out to resemble a sidewalk, and planted red tulips. These interactive kits will be provided at no cost to participating schools.

Reality Check Coordinator Val Webb, shared two activities at the conference but a favorite was cups in the fence.

“We brought a 6-foot fence right to the hotel to let students practice creating an image,” she said. “I recommend they choose a statistic and write that number in the fence using colored cups. They can have people guess what the number means and then reveal it when they’re ready. Using a fence that is high visibility, like one you see when entering school, can

help involve parents and community members because they will also want to find out what it means. We will provide a banner schools can place to explain the activity. This is a fun, easy way to bring awareness to the issue of tobacco marketing which is the focus of Reality Check. Reality Check is a youth led movement aiming to reduce youth exposure to tobacco marketing in stores and on screen.”

Reality Check is for teens ages 12-18. Reality Check was just one of the programs represented at the conference.

There were also staff who oversee LGBTQIA programming, prevention staff who provide program-

Watch the heat

This year spring seemed to take its time settling into Central New York.

In the early month of April and May we saw temperatures and conditions seesaw from nice days to what at least felt like freezing temperatures. And with a few days of poor conditions where the sun and sky were blocked out with smoke from the wildfires in Canada, it felt like spring and summer might never really arrive.

The past week we saw temperatures begin to climb, even if mixed with some rain storm conditions and the forecast ahead looks more like the summer conditions we usually associate with June and July.

Of course as the old saying about Central New York weather goes, if you don’t like it, give it a minute and it just may change.

But it is likely there will be plenty of more warm days in the next few months and with that in mind there are some things everyone should be mindful of for their own health and safety as well as those around them.

According to the American Heart Association, as the temperature rises, so can your risk for suffering health issues like heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Doctors recommend using good judgment when it comes to activities outside in the heat, and that you stay hydrated.

The Heart Association recommends that during hot days everyone keep a few guidelines in mind.

According to the Heart Association it is best to avoid the outdoors in the early afternoon, about noon to 3 p.m., because the sun is usually at its strongest, putting you at higher risk for heat-related illnesses.

Dressing for the heat is also important.

According to the Heart Association most people probably sweat the most in their shoes, so choose well-ventilated shoes and look for socks that repel perspiration. Foot powders and antiperspirants can also help with sweat.

It is also recommended that people wear lightweight, light-colored clothing in breathable fabrics such as cotton, or a newer fabric that repels sweat. Add a hat and/or sunglasses. Before you get started, apply a water-resistant sunscreen with at least SPF 15, and reapply it every two hours.

Staying hydrated is also vitally important.

It is recommended that people drink a few cups of water before, during and after exercise and void caffeinated or alcoholic beverages which can lead to dehydration.

If you are outside, take regular breaks and find a shady or cool place to rest and rehydrate if possible.

If you do have heart or other medical concerns, follow your doctor’s recommendations.

It is also important to know the signs of when you are reaching a point of being too hot.

Symptoms of heat exhaustion include, headaches, heavy sweating, cold, moist skin, dizziness or fainting (syncope), a weak and rapid pulse, muscle cramps, fast, shallow breathing and nausea, vomiting or both.

If you experience these symptoms, move to a cooler place, stop exercising and cool down immediately by dousing yourself with cold water and rehydrating. You may need to seek medical attention.

Heat stroke includes symptoms like warm, dry skin with no sweating, strong and rapid pulse, confusion and/or unconsciousness, high fever, throbbing headaches and nausea, vomiting or both.

If you experience these symptoms, seek medical attention right away.

For more information, tips and advice on how to take care of your heart, visit heart.org.

And if you are traveling, keep in mind children, older individuals and pets that may be in the vehicle with you.

If possible it is best to leave pets at home.

As temperatures can soar in a parked car, even with the windows open or tinted windows, it is best to leave anyone who might not want to or be able to leave the car at home as well for their own safety.

Where have all the workers gone?

I felt a bit odd the other day, when, after a morning without as much as a cup of coffee, I stopped at one of those fast-food franchises. I went in and stood at the counter waiting for someone to appear below the signage and coffee pots. The other side of the counter was deserted.

“Hello,” I offered. Nothing. Again, “Hello!”this time a bit louder.

A surprised-looking young man appeared from somewhere behind the machines and said, “What are you doing in here?”

Now, in a retail establishment that is in the business of having people “in here” to purchase their goods and services, that question seemed strange.

“I’m here to get a cup of coffee,” I said.

The young man replied, “We’re closed. Wasn’t the door locked?”

“You’re closed?’ I asked, “But there’s a huge line outside your drive through window.”

“Yes,” he responded. “The drive through is open but the restaurant is closed.”

Before I could ask why he replied, “Short-staffed today.”

Ah. I understood. The huge sign at the entrance offering a beginning wage of over $15 an hour with other workplace enticements should have tipped me off.

I understood, because it wasn’t the first time that short staffing has affected how I live my life.

Where the heck have all the workers gone? All of a sudden there aren’t enough people to fill all kinds of jobs from doctors to lifeguards.

Not four years ago, right before the pandemic, if I called my doctor for a same day appointment, I got one. Of course, I have to add, my reason for the appointment was a legiti-

mate problem. It wasn’t as if I had a few free hours and thought I would shoot the breeze with the doctor. If I needed a diagnostic procedure or a visit to a specialist, I would be seen almost immediately.

Now? Are you kidding? Getting an appointment is a tad, no, wait … what is bigger much bigger than a tad … massively more difficult. Here’s my latest example. My mammogram scheduled almost a year ago for this July has been moved to September because of staffing shortages. This particular practice had to close an entire service site for the summer because of staffing shortages.

Haven’t we all heard about the shortage of nurses that required hospitals to hire traveling nurses at uber premium wages?

Locally, some of my favorite eateries no longer offer lunch or Sunday meals. Not enough staff. I hear about pools not being able to open across the country because they don’t have the lifeguards. Trying to find someone to do repairs around the house is like spitting into the wind … no carpenters, masons, plumbers, etc. We sent all our young people to college to prepare for professional jobs, denigrating the value of blue-collar careers so there aren’t enough men and women working in the trades. But then even the professions are facing the staffing famine. Our accountant told us that his firm had trouble finding staff during the last income tax go around. Accountants?

Didn’t the Syracuse City School District have trouble finding enough teachers to begin the year?

There are many reasons for the shortfall of workers, some relating to retirement, educational preparation, COVID (the source of all maladies and complaints,) working conditions and salaries, on and on. Some, and I hear this a lot … think that it can be blamed on the government’s paying people not to work during the COVID years …but then, that has been over for a while, how are these people living without jobs? One response to that question is that these slackers are playing video games in their parents’ basements.

Others point out that, as the demographics change with aging out of the workforce, we haven’t prepared similar numbers to replace those that leave. Aspirational choices for lifetime work have changed. A discussion on a popular syndicated television show came to the conclusion that younger generations see themselves in a variety of jobs, doing the minimum to stay employed until they find something they like better. Apparently, there is a nirvana job out there somewhere and changing jobs helps you find it. You put in the effort to stay employed but hold off putting in your best effort until you find the job that fits your needs. So, along with staffing shortages we have staffing inadequacies … the minimum effort brigade. Where did this kind of thinking come from? Is this one of those generational things?

Oh joy! Maybe that is why, with a short-staffed medical referral service employing people who may only putting in the minimum amount of effort, my doctor’s request for a Holter Monitor for me took two and a half months to be filled. Probably not, but one does

wonder.

Work is a concept that is relatively new in human history. During most of that history, humans spent their days providing for the necessities of livingfood, shelter, clothing, etc. Work was life. With the agricultural and the industrial revolutions work became the intermediate, the thing that you traded for the necessities of life. More recently, finding work that meets the needs of the individual and thus the training to get that work has moved us away from the basics. Economic, cultural, generational, geopolitical and climatic changes have affected our relationships with employment, with work.

The anecdotal “great resignation” would tell us that COVID’s shut down of normal economic activities has led some to leave their jobs to seek something that better fits how they want to spend their time.

If there is truth to this anecdote, we should see an explosion of wineries, craft beer brewing, glue gun purchases, small holding farms, soap making and craft fairs. Entrepreneurs seeking personal fulfillment will increase or parents will face the cost of continuing to provide for their adult offspring and their electronic devices. There are help wanted signs everywhere. Where are the workers to fill these jobs? Are the workers here already or are they at our borders, asking to come here for work? That is another question that we will have to answer.

Erieville Eagle Scout Sam Medbury has recently completed a scout project to restore the former water tank site on the defunct Syracuse & Chenango Valley Railroad line in Erieville. The project included site clean-up, restoration, sign replication and the erection of a new information kiosk. The Syracuse & Chenango Valley Railroad, completed in Earlville in February 1873, provided Syracuse with a vital link to the coal fields of Pennsylvania and also offered welcomed rail service to the upland communities of Madison and Onondaga counties. The scout project is on the site of the railroad’s 50,000 gallon water tank. Built in 1894, the tank replaced an earlier one near the depot to the north.

For many native to the Manlius area, the opening of Sno Top each year signifies the end of the often harsh Syracuse winter and the beginning of warmer weather. And soon, the business will celebrate 60 years of providing sweet treats to generations of families. Sno Top was built in 1957 on a parcel of property owned by Wilbur Chapman, in front of the Manlius Mart which was built behind the area of Sno Top. The Chapmans owned the ice cream business for a number of years, then it passed through the hands of several other families before being purchased by Vince and Kathy Giordano in 1974. The shop was built in the “Dairy Queen” style, with a sloped roof and sign on top. Vince said Sno Top was built identical to the North Pole ice cream shop in Chittenango, which still stands today. Vince was interested in purchasing Sno Top because he had a background working at the ice cream stand in Suburban Park.

On June 30, a severe thunderstorm resulted in major damage at a number of locations in Cazenovia, including Lorenzo State Historic Site and Cazenovia Rowing Club’s home base at the south end of the lake. Located at 17 Rippleton Road, Lorenzo is the 1807 Federal style home of Holland Land Company agent and Cazenovia founder John Lincklaen. According to Michael Roets, Lorenzo lost numerous trees in the storm, and many others sustained damage that will likely lead to their demise and necessary removal. Most of the affected trees were 100- plus years old. The most significant tree on the property to sustain major damage was the “President Grover Cleveland’s Tree,” a white pine that stood in the grove to the west of the mansion’s front lawn. “Lorenzo resident Charles Fairchild served as secretary of the treasury for President Cleveland in the 1880’s and when the president and his wife visited the Fairchilds at Lorenzo on July 18 and 19, 1887, the president planted this tree,” Roets said.

A hAlf-seAson full of surprises

As Major League Baseball passed 81 games, halfway to 162, a team which made the playoffs a year ago was on top of the AL East and a team from the Lone Star State led the AL West.

Only it was Tampa Bay, not the Yankees, and the Texas Rangers, not the Houston Astros, occupying those top spots.

Wait, there’s more. There’s Baltimore chasing the Rays in the AL East, Miami the closest pursuer to Atlanta in the NL East, Arizona leading the NL West and San Francisco second, ahead of L.A. and San Diego.

Cincinnati spent time atop the NL Central and St. Louis has spent most of the season in the cellar of that division.

Just like everyone predicted back in March.

Some might cringe at this upheaval, especially TV executive who keep putting the Yankees, Red Sox, Mets and Dodgers in prime viewing spots no matter what they’re doing while the better

Random Thoughts

stories are elsewhere. Yet if you’re a true baseball, you’re loving this. Optimism is everywhere when a season starts, but usually when summer rolls around that’s replaced by stark realism and a long slog toward the autumn.

From the outset, the Rays set the surprising tempo, matching a modern MLB record with a 13-0 start. Despite some regression to the mean, Tampa Bay might have a club better than the two that won pennants in 2008 and 2020.

It will need to be. Baltimore’s 2022 progress wasn’t a fluke, and the Adley Rutschmannled Orioles have outperformed the inconsistent Blue Jays and Red Sox, not to mention the injury-prone Yankees, who just aren’t the same without Aaron Judge and aren’t sure when he’ll return.

Texas took an even bigger leap, from irrelevant to unstoppable at the plate, and the Rangers get enough pitching even with Jacob deGrom shelved (again). Yet it has to worry about Houston roaring back to life and the Angels with a healthy Mike Trout and incomparable Shohei Ohtani, who might as well secure the MVP now.

What’s not as pretty is the lame-duck A’s and rebuilding Royals careen toward 110 defeats or worse. Seattle hasn’t scored enough runs. Nor has Cleveland, who has seen Minnesota take the lead in an awful AL Central where the White Sox have disappointed and Detroit remains a few steps away from contending.

Over in the National League, it’s turned into a routine of sorts to report on the woes of the Mets and Padres, who combined to spend high nine figures for…teams below .500 stuck in fourth place. But it’s better to cel -

Jacks needs a home

Jacks has done a lot of jumping around! he was originally surrendered to the shelter when his family had a change of lifestyle and could no longer keep him. he was adopted, but ultimately the family realized it wasn’t a good fit and he was returned. if there was a canine IQ test, Jacks’ score would be off the charts, but sometimes the smartest dogs fare the worse in a shelter setting, and that’s the case with Jacks. Jacks is smart, sweet, affectionate, and loves to train. he’s four years old and knows sit, down, and shakeif there was a canine iQ test, Jacks’ score would be off the charts, but sometimes the smartest dogs fare the worse in the shelter setting, and that’s the case with Jacks.. he’s a proud member of the doggy playgroup and loves action and fun - of course with cuddle time to follow! he rides nicely in the car, is patient in the bath, and enjoys his walks. he would do best in an active, adult home with people who will embrace his love of training and adventure. if you enjoy hiking, running, or are interested in dog sports, Jacks is the dog for you! This deserving dog would like nothing more than to stop being a “Jumping Jacks” and be Jacks, someone’s beloved companion. for more information about adoption, call 315-454-4479, email frontdesk1@cnyspca.org, or visit cnyspca.org

ebrate what’s going on in Miami, where Luis Arraez has gone half a season hitting close to .400. Please, please let this continue. Doing anything for the first time in 82 years is beyond cool.

Plus there’s the rise of Arizona, close to irrelevant the last 15 years but thriving behind rookie sensation Corbin Carroll, along with San Francisco climbing back into the fray against all expectations. With Milwaukee soso and the Cubs taking small steps, it was a real rush to see Pittsburgh (!) lead the NL Central for a long while before reality hit hard in June, only to have Cincinnati win 12

in a row and emerge as the most delightful team in baseball with a breathtaking newcomer in Elly de la Cruz – he can do everything.

Of course, some things haven’t changed. Washington remains stripped and overwhelmed, its youth movement a couple of years from really taking hold. Atlanta remains the NL’s consistent team to beat, Philadelphia starts slow and picks up steam in summer and Colorado –well, the Angels scored 23 runs on them in four innings, so you can see how that’s going.

Maybe this is all a three-month mirage that dissipates in the July and

August heat, leaving us with the all-too-familiar sides climbing back to the top and the dreamers left to dream for 2024. Or it doesn’t happen and, come late October, we’re seeing something like Cincinnai and Baltimore battling to win it all, two great baseball cities brought back to life half a century after the Oriole Way and the Big Red Machine. Two possible paths, Robert Frost-style, and like the poet, we just might find what we want on the road less traveled.

Please say it isn’t so!

US Senator Richard Blumenthal, Democrat, and Senator Ron Johnson, Republican, have sent a formal invitation to PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monaghan, Public Investment Fund (PIF) governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan, and LIV CEO Greg Norman to testify in front of the US Senate on July, 11, 2023.

PLEASE SAY IT ISN’T SO! Well, it is so and there is nothing we can do about it…yet. At 12:09PM on June 21, 2023, Blumenthal sent this out on Twitter…

”Today I am officially inviting the PGA Tour Commissioner, LIV Golf CEO, & Saudi Public Investment Fund Governor to testify in front of my Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. We need to get to the bottom of the planned agreement between the PGA & Saudifunded LIV Golf”.

I tried to find out if Senators Blumenthal and Johnson even played golf, not that it matters, but I would probably feel a little more comfortable about the July 11th hearing knowing they did play and at least had a basic understanding, appreciation and respect for the game so the hearing doesn’t turn into a “political circus”. I just can’t get my head wrapped around a hearing where the US Senate, PGA Tour and Saudi Arabia are going to accomplish much of anything on July 11th except perhaps create even more “bad headlines” and confusion for all parties. By the way, the invited “parties” to the hearing are supposed to respond to the request by June 28…last Wednesday. The deadline for this article, which will appear in the July 5th issue of this publication, was the morning of June 28.

My first prediction - The PGA Tour and the PIF will ask for and receive an extension for the hearing to a later date. They may even ask for a private meeting before the public meeting.

Have you asked yourself “why” this is all happening “now”, with all of the problems our nation is facing both at home and around the world?

Blumenthal’s reason for the hearing is this, “Our goal is to uncover the facts about what went into the PGA Tour’s deal with the Saudi Investment Fund and what

the Saudi takeover means for the future of this cherished American institution and our national interest. American’s deserve to know what the structure and governance of this new entity will be”. Sounds pretty, but can you imagine what the US Senate will have to do to, “uncover the facts” about the deal…or..what the Saudi “takeover” means for the future of this cherished American institution. Come-on…it’s all a bunch of political BULL. Our Senate has at least “25” other priorities to deal with rather than the game of golf at this time. I believe Blumenthal’s requested hearing for July 11th is just a diversion to take away the current horrible media headlines about the current existing problems our nation and the world is facing.

My second prediction - No major news will be discovered at the Senate hearing until the PGA Tour reaches some kind of an understanding with the Tour players about how the “new” arrangement with the Saudi’s will benefit them financially. My third prediction - If the PGA Tour players are not satisfied with what the PGA Tour proposes, they “WILL FORM A UNION” !!!

My forth prediction- The PGA Tour will offer some type of financial reimbursement to the players (collectively or individually) who stayed to play on the PGA Tour rather than jump to the LIV Tour.

My fifth and final thought - The game of golf will thrive and survive with or without the Senate investigations into the contracts and financial records of the PGA Tour and…CNY will continue to be one of the best and strongest amateur golf areas in the US.

New Woodstock Library welcomes local artist

The New Woodstock Free Library is proud to announce the art exhibit, “The Seasons in Acrylic,” by Lisa Wright-Murphy. The exhibit will run from June 5 through the end of August.

Wright-Murphy is a fifth-generation resident of Delphi Falls, NY, with a lifelong passion for all things creative.

Her current project brings together her love of nature and expressionism on vivid acrylic canvases.

“The Seasons in Acrylic” exhibit included local, faraway, and imaginary landscapes.

This collection embraces color, light, and texture in order to bring forth the full beauty of nature. As a self-taught artist, Lisa returned to painting several years ago after exploring other mediums while raising a family.

“I create art the relates to the beauty of nature because I feel our connection to nature is important to understanding ourselves as a people,” WrightMurphy said.

You can see more of Wright-Murphy’s art at her Etsy shop: sentimentallisa.

The New Woodstock library gallery welcomes the Cazenovia Watercolor Society in September/October and will wrap-up the year with Audrey Hamilton’s “Photographic Studies of Local Landscapes”.

The library is now seeking artists to exhibit for the 2024 season.

The library boasts a 500-square-foot exhibit gallery in a spacious, delightful setting. The library is located in a renovated church on Rt. 13 in the heart of rural central New York. Please contact us for more information; visit us at newwoodstocklibrary.org or call 315-662-3134.

COMMUNITY CALENDAR

CAz SCHooLS CELEBRATE JERSEy DAy

Cazenovia Central School District’s Jersey Day is a special event held each year, where varsity athletes volunteer their jersey to a fourth-grade student to wear for the day.

Varsity students are paired with a fourth-grader, and the pairs get to know each other as well as spend time with the team as a whole during the assembly.

“The fourth-graders love getting to know a high school athlete,” said Burton Street Elementary Physical Education Teacher Sean Condon, who assisted in coordinating the event. “They wear their jerseys with pride and enthusiasm throughout the school day.”

Members of the Cazenovia lacrosse, baseball, softball, track and field, golf, tennis and unified basketball teams participated in the event, providing fourth-graders with an actual Cazenovia Lakers varsity jersey.

Varsity team captains speak about topics such as proper nutrition, how to balance school

and sports, being a part of a team, representing the community with your actions, trusting your teammates, sportsmanship, responsibility and more.

“The public speaking opportunity has served as a valuable educational and leadership moment for the varsity students over the years,” said Coordinator of Athletics and Communications Mike Byrnes.

Condon shared that several of the high school students remembered being in fourth grade themselves participating in the event, and he loves seeing that come around full circle as they give back to the current fourth-graders.

Participants expressed thanks to the Cazenovia Athletic Association (CAA) and the High School principal’s office, who funded the refreshments for the event. Jersey Day has been an annual event at the school for many years promoted by members of the CAA partnering with the school athletic department, coaches and school administrators.

“The concept was to have older high school student-athletes give back to the younger

generations at CCSD, and perhaps inspire future participation,” said Byrnes. “The tradi -

tion quickly became an annual staple within the program.”

In the June 25 press release, Paul Leone, executive director of the New York State Brewers Association, reported that NYS has the second-highest number of breweries in the country with a total of 538 spread throughout every region of the state.

“. . . With access to market for local craft beer becoming increasingly more difficult, having a New York State-focused distributorship and online retail outlet that has fresh local beer delivered to anyone in the country is critical right now to the growth of the industry,” Leone said.

As the closure of Cazenovia College approaches, the newly formed organization Reinvent Cazenovia Campus, Inc. is embracing the opportunity to envision a new future for the campus.

Founded by Cazenovians, the organization aims to raise funds and be a valuable partner in determining the highest and best uses for the campus with the goal of replacing and ultimately expanding upon the 199-year-old college’s economic impact.

“We believe the campus has the potential to continue to be a great asset to the community and we are committed to raising funds that will ensure the campus is repurposed in a way that maximizes the social and economic well-being of the area,” said Matt Cashatt, one of the founding members of the group. “Reinvent Cazenovia Campus is committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure the campus benefits the greatest number of people in the community while still preserving the historic character of the campus.”

The group envisions transforming the campus into a cutting-edge workforce training center, concentrating on innovative and rapidly growing fields like semiconductor manufacturing, applied artificial intelligence, ag-tech, and biotechnology.

By establishing a forward-thinking and dynamic institution, the group’s founders hope to position Cazenovia as a leader in growth and innovation, evolving into a center

for high-tech thought leadership and entrepreneurship that attracts new businesses and residents and establishes itself as a sought-after destination for learning and exploration.

Reinvent Cazenovia Campus is currently seeking various forms of community support, including donations, volunteers, and partnerships with local businesses and organizations.

“We understand the importance of community engagement in this endeavor, and we are eager to collaborate with all stakeholders to ensure the success of our vision,” said Lisa Burnett, a founding member of Reinvent Cazenovia Campus.

The organization is collaborating with stakeholder groups including the Cazenovia Area Community Development Association to contribute to the post-college planning process that is already underway, and it has received positive responses from the community with offers to get behind the effort.

“We’d especially like to thank the Hancock Estabrook Law Firm, whose invaluable guidance and support has been instrumental in our formation,” said Mark Costa, another founding member of the group.

second, the Picnic Class, will showcase each competitor’s reinsmanship — the art of communicating with the carriage driving horse through the reins, whip, and voice — and their ability to set a festive table complete with homemade goodies for the judge to sample.

The “Hats Off to Lorenzo” opening party will begin at 5 p.m. to officially welcome the competitors and honor the show sponsors. The celebration will include horse-drawn rides around the Lorenzo grounds and complimentary tours of the Lorenzo mansion. Community members are encouraged to attend and wear hats to compete in a hat contest with VIP judge Brandon Roth of WSTM in Syracuse. Reservations are not required. Pay $10 at the door to receive a signature LDC glass and unlimited refills of wine, beer, or nonalcoholic beverages.

Saturday Saturday’s competition will begin at 8 a.m. and will include classes in both the Main Ring and the Obstacle Ring. The final classes before the noon break are two fan favorites. First on the schedule is the Carriage Dog class, which can be judged by the “people’s choice” and is based primarily on the suitability of the dog to serve as a companion to the driver. In the Drive & Ride class, the horses are hitched and driven in the first portion of the event and then, after lunch, ridden and judged under saddle.

Another highlight of the day is a noon Educational Showcase demonstration focused on the history and sounding of the coach horn. The talk will be presented by Da -

vid Remley, organizer of the former Walnut Hill Farm Driving Competition in Pittsford, New York. The historic Oakman Carriage Collection will also be on display in the Collection Barn from 1 to 3 p.m.

Sunday

The final day of competition will commence at 8 a.m. with the Pleasure Drive-Pace. Competitors will drive their horses or ponies along an approximately fivemile course through the countryside surrounding Lorenzo. The goal is for each competitor to drive at a pace that puts them at the finish line as close as possible to the ideal time for the size of their horse or pony.

Sunday’s obstacle classes will begin at approximately 10:30 a.m., and the Main Ring classes will begin at 1 p.m.

The noontime Educational Showcase will feature demonstrations by local Interscholastic Equestrian Association teams hosted by Spruce Valley Stables/Certainty Sales of Erieville and Hoyt’s Training and Showing of Manlius.

o ther highlights

Throughout the threeday event, food will be available for purchase and a variety of vendors will be set up in Market Lane to sell items such as hats and other riding and driving apparel, jewelry, custom porcelain pieces, equestrian portraits, equestrian clothing and items for youths, and gifts for people of all ages.

The Kids’ Korral will be open on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will be hosted by Whispering Winds Equestrian Center on Saturday and by the Limestone Creek Pony Club on Sunday.

LDC history Located at 17 Rippleton Rd., Lorenzo is the 1807 Federal-style home of John Lincklaen, agent of the Holland Land Company and Cazenovia’s founder. The Lincklaen/ Ledyard family continually occupied Lorenzo until the property and its contents were conveyed to New York State in 1968. The site is operated by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and supported with help from the Friends of Lorenzo.

In 1976, Russell Grills, Lorenzo’s site manager at the time, organized a carriage exhibition on the mansion’s lawn.

Manlius residents Sue and Jack Voss decided to hitch up their Morgan horse, Starduster, and drive their carriage from their home to the exhibition at Lorenzo.

Inspired by the crowd’s excitement at seeing a horse and carriage on the grounds again, Grills decided to host a driving competition at the site.

The following year, the Vosses, the Remley family, and others helped

organize the first annual LDC.

“Over the years, the competition has included draft horses and hitches of four-in-hands, but today’s competitors include mostly singles or pairs, and miniature horses have become very popular competition partners,” said Buckhout. “While driving horses may look easy, it takes great communication between driver and equine partner(s) through the lines, voice, and whip — the latter which replaces

one’s leg when riding astride. Carriage driving is a modern equestrian sport, yet watching beautifully turned-out horses and carriages takes us back to our roots when horse and carriage were the only form of transportation.”

Since its founding, the LDC has been canceled on only two occasions. The first was in 2017 due to a storm that caused significant damage to the Lorenzo grounds during the July Fourth Cazenovia Area Volunteer Am -

bulance Corps Arts and Crafts Show, and the second cancellation was in 2020 due to the COVID19 pandemic. LDC admission and parking are free. For more information on the event, visit lorenzodriving.or g
