Message from the EARCOS Board President & Executive Director Dear EARCOS Community, Welcome! What a joy for our entire EARCOS community to be able to come together, without obstacle or impediment, for the first time since 2019! I know we are all looking forward to fantastic learning experiences, reconnecting with old colleagues and making new friends. EARCOS, as the premier professional development organization in our region, is known for being a welcoming and caring organization. It is the relationships that make our community so special. These personal connections are so important in helping all our schools to improve, support, and learn from each other and to do our very best for the students and school communities we have the honor of serving. The theme for our EARCOS Leadership Conference this year is ‘Creating Safe Harbors”. A safe harbor is a sheltered and protected place where ships, and people, can come to find rest and protection from the storms of life so that they can be refreshed to carry out their purpose and work. Congratulations to EARCOS for empowering us to carry on this important mission by providing us with the time, safe spaces, and resources through this conference where our members can be encouraged, inspired, stretched and equipped for this important task. Please join me in expressing our deepest appreciation to our Director, Ed Greene, and the incredible EARCOS staff for their exceptional work in preparing a powerful and memorable EARCOS Leadership Conference! I would also like to thank our sponsors for their passionate support of our conference. Additionally, I would like to express my gratitude to our EARCOS Board members for their tireless service in supporting the work of Ed and his team as well as providing strategic guidance for the exciting future of our organization. Finally, I wish to recognize all the members and friends of EARCOS who have prepared the many thought-provoking presentations and keynote speeches that will enrich us all both professionally and personally. I wish you all an inspiring and rewarding conference as together we collaborate to create safe harbors for our learners and communities. Kindest Regards, Kevin Baker EARCOS Board President Welcome! It is finally here—we are finally here—at the 2023 EARCOS Leadership Conference. On behalf of all of us at EARCOS, let me offer you the warmest of welcomes and tell you how incredibly happy we are to be together with you. Our theme this year is Creating Safe Harbors. Clearly, the theme has resonated with many, as there is today an incredible array of topics related to safety in today’s international schools. From the psychological threats from having been isolated for several years during the pandemic, to the stress of a non-stop 24/7 world of expectations, to the increasingly polarized political world that has infected most of our school communities, to the dark sides of social media, not to mention the many disturbing realities that led to the rise of Child Protection initiative that not that long ago would have seemed to be so unnecessary in ‘our school communities.’ The theme of safe harbors speaks also about the creation of classroom and school cultures where learning is available to all, where people are free to be themselves and where inquiry and speech are protected (like so many other increasingly endangered species). Where Cultures of Learning see assessment as a pathway to support learners, not rank them. Where inclusion and belonging are embraced--and prejudice and exclusion viewed as anathema. Where history, the real, honest and often ugly history, is taught so that it will not be repeated. The theme of Safe Harbors led to a remarkable collection of proposals, and we are truly grateful to so many of you who have stepped forward to ensure that this Leadership Conference will offer such a powerfully engaging collection of sessions. I am deeply grateful to so many of you who have traveled halfway across the globe to be part of this year’s ELC. A very special welcome to keynoters Derick Gay, Charles Vogl, Michael Levin and James Stronge and Leslie Grant. How fortunate we are to have them with us. I am equally appreciative of the many, many EARCOS educators who have offered to come to the conference to share their ideas with friends and colleagues. We are so fortunate to be living and working together in this region with its tremendous number of leading schools and talented educators. We have a record number of delegates and speakers this year, so buckle up your seat belts and enjoy the fantastic ride awaiting. As always, let our team know if there is anything we can do to assist you. And please remember to take time to visit the Exhibitors’ Hall. The exhibitors not only help ensure that this event happens, but they help ensure that the programs you offer in your schools continue to thrive. Thank you to all of our Exhibitors and Sponsors. In closing, I must extend my appreciation to the EARCOS Board of Trustees for their generous support and trust. We must also thank the Shangri-la management and staff. They make it all run almost seamlessly. And, let none of us forget to thank the EARCOS Staff—Kristine De Castro, Edzel Drilo, Ver Castro, Maica Cruz, RJ Macalalad, and Robert Viray all of whom have given so much to steer this conference into, well, into its own safe harbor. Welcome one and all to the 2023 EARCOS Leadership Conference! Edward E. Greene, Ph.D. Executive Director “Creating Safe Harbors”

JENNIFER ABRAMS CORUNDUM Having Hard Conversations: Finding Your Voice Around What Matters As administrators, we often come up against situations with faculty, staff and parents where difficult topics must be addressed. What questions should we be asking ourselves before we speak, and what strategies should we use to plan for when we do speak? Based on Jennifer’s books, Having Hard Conversations and Hard Conversations Unpacked, this highly personal and interactive session will provide participants with action plans and scripting tools for having those necessary hard conversations. Participants will leave with more clarity and courage as they return to address challenging situations within their schools. (read more on Whova App) BAMBI BETTS & CHARLES BARDER SINGAPORE Developing High Leverage Governance Strategies to Deal With Three Chronic Challenges to Boards Join us for a day of designing and developing action plans and protocols to confront three chronic challenges to Boards: 1. Putting Teeth and Meaning into Head Evaluation - Gain Insight, Understanding and Learn Approaches to Help Make the Process More Constructive and Useful For All. 2. Succession Planning – Face Inevitable Turnover with Time-Tested Strategies for Sustainable and Stable Governance . 3. Taking the Mystery out of the Generative – Approach Authentic International School Governance Issues through the Generative Lens. (read more on Whova App) GREG CURTIS & AARON MONIZ INDONESIA I Achieving Transformational Global Citizenship Systems for our Students Articulating a transformational vision and goals for global citizenship requires effort across all systems that make up your learning community. This is not easy work, but it is necessary. During this full-day workshop, Aaron Moniz of Inspire Citizens and Greg Curtis will support school leaders in devising goals and an actionable roadmap to achieve their aspirations for a highly impactful focus on global citizenship. (read more on Whova App) LEE ANN JUNG PHILIPPINES I What Matters Most: Mastery Assessment and Grading Based on her forthcoming Corwin book, Lee Ann outlines an order and process of school change toward assessment and grading practices that inform teaching and learning on the enduring and transferable skills that matter most. How do we teach and assess metacognitive skills? What should be happening with assessment in classrooms far in advance of designing standards-based grading (SBG) and report card? What is the next generation of grading scale, beyond the common SBG scale? Come ready to engage in deep thought about assessment and grading and push the envelope of even standards-based assessment to a vision of what’s next. RAMI MADANI MYANMAR II Understanding How Leadership is Changing A new model of leadership is needed to help us be more effective in leading our schools. Events and trends of recent years have created a shift in teachers’, students’, and stakeholders’ sense of purpose, autonomy, priorities, and values. At the same time there are important school goals to advance despite these shifts. This session will describe the new context of schooling that is impacted by unavoidable global conversations, suggest ways for leaders to focus on new skills to continue to be inspiring, relevant, and ahead of the change we experience. Regardless of your role at school, the need for you to bring your beliefs and values wisely and safely to this conversation has never been more needed. (read more on Whova App) SCOTT MCLEOD MYANMAR III Leadership for Deeper Learning What do leaders at innovative schools do that is different from their counterparts in more traditional schools? Come to this active, hands-on preconference workshop to find out! Most deeper learning schools share an emphasis on applied creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving; high levels of student agency, control, ownership, voice, and choice; opportunities to engage in authentic, real-world work in local and global communities; and robust technology infusion. In this workshop we will learn from numerous innovative schools about what deeper learning leaders do, what support structures they put into place to support robust learning and teaching, and how they maintain the motivation and courage necessary for this complex work. OCHAN POWELL & KENDALL ZOLLER CHAO PHRAYA Feeling Known, Loved, Safe and Successful: Developing an Inclusive and Collaborative Culture Imagine if all schools were designed specifically for the students they serve. How might they be different from the way they are now? We suspect the differences might be evident beyond the confines of the classroom and extend to the way adults relate to one another as they work together. When a school is designed for its students, it leads to an inclusive culture where every member of the community feels known, loved, safe, and successful. (read more on Whova App) 10

The Richard T. Krajczar Humanitarian Award Dr. Richard T. Krajczar’s commitment to international education was unparalleled and equaled only by his genuine love for friends, colleagues and the students served across the EARCOS region. Caring for others was not just Dr. K’s passion but raison d’etre. His support of those who provided sustenance and care for the less fortunate was among his most endearing traits. To that end, the EARCOS Board of Trustees has established the Richard T. Krajczar Humanitarian Award to recognize, each year, the work of one not-for-profit organization with a proven record of philanthropy in the East Asia Pacific Region.
Presented by Mark Tomaszewski, President, Tiecare International to Jennifer Henbest de Calvillo on behalf of EJAAD-The Afghan Project in collaboration with Osaka International School of Kwansei Gakuin. Supported by
