The East Asia Regional Council of Overseas Schools is an organization of 116 member schools in East Asia. These schools have a total of more than 82,000 pre-K to 12th grade students and over 9,000 teachers and administrators. EARCOS also has 111 associate members— textbook and software publishers and distributors, universities, financial planners, architectural firms, insurance companies, youth organizations, etc— and over 21 individual members.

EARCOS holds one administrators’ conference every November and one teachers’ conference every March.In addition, EARCOS funds several weekend institutes hosted by member schools throughout East Asia. EARCOS also organizes a meeting for EARCOS heads of schools every April. EARCOS publishes its newsletter, the EARCOS TriAnnual, which is distributed to its members three times a year and a directory of all of its members.

WELCOME MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear ETC Delegates: Welcome to the EARCOS Teachers’ Conference (ETC) 2010 at International School Manila. We would like to thank David Toze and the ISM staff for the use of their great campus and Dick Robbins of Brent School Manila for providing all the bus transportation for our conference. It has been a cooperative effort shown by both schools and their leadership and we applaud the effort. This is the first time in ETC’s eight-year history that it is being hosted on a school campus. The campus setting has enabled us to provide more intense coverage in specialty areas of physical education, art, dance, technology, and counseling. We may adjust our future venues to include a campus setting every three years to allow for this kind of coverage to continue. With the world economic situation, it is prudent that EARCOS holds cost in check put allows for quality professional development. The ETC has three excellent keynote presenters with Taylor Mali, Alan November, and John Joseph. We have 12 preconference offerings, and 116 workshop sessions geared to meet our teachers’ needs. In addition, our job-a-like sessions will provide an opportunity for teachers to meet with their colleagues who work in similar areas. ETC will have a record number of 76 teacher workshop sessions, which are always practical and well presented. Please support your fellow teachers. Students will again be highlighted with our general sessions having an EARCOS Global Citizen student from ISM, the Brent school dance team, and the 2009 Shanghai/EARCOS Film Festival winner. EARCOS has great talent so support our students and be on time for each general session. Thanks to all our ETC teacher representatives who have spent many hours assisting our teachers with workshops, registration for the conference, and hotel and transportation arrangements. Without their dedication it would be impossible to host our conference the way we do. Thanks, also, to our EARCOS staff members who have worked endless hours to assist with the many details and logistics. The contributions of Elaine, Vitz, Ver, Edzel, and Robert with their attention to detail is commendable. Our new assistant director Bill Oldread has been invaluable —we know his first ETC will be memorable. Finally, it is always my wish for our delegates to make good contacts, be challenged by our presenters, renew friendships, and enjoy our hospitality. Strategies and List of Results

STRATEGY A Provide specific targeted and differentiated professional development opportunities for various member communities. 1. EARCOS sponsored grant process financially supports action research by and for EARCOS members pertinent to the educational process in Asia. 2. List serves/web page resources facilitate inter-school communication regarding issues relevant to specific disciplines or job categories. 3. Subject-specific conferences meet the professional development needs in selected disciplines or job categories both at the major conference site and at separate “stand-alone” conferences at different locations and times. 4. Consortiums of schools, based on professional development interests and needs, collaboratively identify and support this best practices. 5. Faculty in EARCOS schools share expertise to support targeted professional development needs at the school site. 6. A cohort of trained, affordable facilitators is available to work with Boards and Trustees throughout the region. 7. EARCOS facilitates a mentor program for new school heads and new principals. 8. EARCOS, through its aspiring leadership programs, encourages its members to pursue leadership positions. 9. Offering a greater choice of breadth and/or depth at the major annual conferences, EARCOS develops new and varied formats for conferences. EARCOS schools use a range of technologies that support collaborative efforts and staff development. 2. In collaboration with EARCOS universities provide e-learning opportunities that allow for staff development and credentialing opportunities. 3. The EARCOS web site is a valuable tool offering a broad range of collaborative services enhancing staff and student development and a resource for educational opportunities within EARCOS. STRATEGY E Conduct relevant research and communicate resulting data to identify and enhance exceptional educational practices. 1. EARCOS is a data driven organization and models this paradigm for school use. 2. EARCOS supports data driven decision-making through the use of electronic surveys. 3. EARCOS identifies and support research to assess the impact of professional development efforts on student learning.

BARBARA-ANN SUNDAY AP Studio Art (2 day workshop) This workshop will address all three sections of the three different AP Studio Art Exam portfolios. Participants will survey the requirements and parameters of each portfolio in conjunction with the scoring rubrics. There will be opportunities to apply the rubrics in assessing a range of student work, discuss recent developments in the digital submission process, and sample a variety of strategies for achieving success. Participants will engage in discussions about appropriate classroom materials and share best practices, techniques and strategies that can be used to enhance student learning. They will also discuss and participate in exercises to develop effective vertical teams; teams of educators within a school that work together to align art curriculum and instruction across the grade levels in order to prepare students for university level course work.

BILL ZEIGLER AP US History and AP World History (combined) Interested in learning skill-building techniques that can be applied to AP US and World History? Social science classes at any level? Join us in our exploration of the tools and techniques that can be used in any history social science course to encourage greater reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. Participants will review material from the US and World History Advanced Placement (AP) courses, free-response questions, and multiple-choice tests, and engage in discussions around the techniques and strategies used to develop deeper critical analysis within the social sciences. Participants will also hold a mock reading for both exams and discuss the scoring process. Educators teaching AP or courses that prepare students for advanced and university level course work in the social sciences, are encouraged to attend. In addition, teacher teams will find valuable development resources to vertically align their curriculum, grades 6-12.

LYNNE COLEMAN Teachers as Critical Friends Facilitators: Leading Engaged, Collaborative Groups in Focused, Powerful Learning We will look at teachers as stewards of students’ learning – and their own. Participants will examine the work of both students and teachers to determine how is it that students and adults learn. We will further experience how processes and protocols can help support productive and efficient learning in the school and community. Through the day, participants will: 1. Learn and practice strategies to build and facilitate teams among peers and in classrooms; 2. Select from among a variety of protocols to design and facilitate effective, efficient agendas for team meetings; 3. Practice ways to put learners, students and adults, in the center . . . in order to improve the learning of all; 4. Learn and practice ways of looking at student learning data that provides focus and power to the work of teaching and learning. NOTE: Participants are encouraged to bring an assignment, assessment or unit they are working on but have not completed. They will have an opportunity to volunteer this real in-progress work for the purpose of tapping the group for ideas and suggestions for further development.

This pre-conference will focus on sharing tools for communication, group and team building, decision-making, problem-solving and meeting processes. Their three active sessions include 1. Functional Fitness Blasts (all grades), 2. Teaching Games for Understanding (all grades), and 3. Healthy Active Living: A Foundation for a Healthy School (specifically for grades 7 to 10). Their fourth session is of particular interest for those teaching IB-Sports, exercise and health science.

THURSDAY, 25 MARCH 2010 MAGGIE MOON / ELIZA LEWIS / JILL KAUFMAN Launching Authentic Reading and Writing Workshops in Grades 1-5: Ways to Set up Your Classroom Environment and Organize Your Materials in Order to Provide Students Room to Grow as Readers and Writers. This workshop will give teachers a realistic view of what a Reading and Writing Workshop looks like and how they both fit inside of a Balanced Literacy Framework. Topics covered will include basic essentials such as: setting up a child-centered room environment, materials needed to launch a Reading and Writing Workshop, how to know what to teach, ways to collaborate with colleagues when developing curriculum, how to plan and execute focused minilessons, how to set up and establish partnerships and how to differentiate instruction in order to best meet the needs of all students. Small breakout groups will allow for a more careful examination of particular topics, with differentiation for grade levels. Teachers who have previous experience teaching within a workshop model are also welcome!

BARBARA-ANN SUNDAY AP Studio Art - 2 Day Workshop Description This workshop will address all three sections of the three different AP Studio Art Exam portfolios. Participants will survey the requirements and parameters of each portfolio in conjunction with the scoring rubrics. There will be opportunities to apply the rubrics in assessing a range of student work, discuss recent developments in the digital submission process, and sample a variety of strategies for achieving success. Participants will engage in discussions about appropriate classroom materials and share best practices, techniques and strategies that can be used to enhance student learning. They will also discuss and participate in exercises to develop effective vertical teams; teams of educators within a school that work together to align art curriculum and instruction across the grade levels in order to prepare students for university level course work.

JEFF UTECHT The Connected Classroom This all day preconference session will examine the basics of setting up a globally networked classroom. We will concentrate on three areas: pedagogy, tools and curriculum. We will spend time looking at and trying out some of the latest tools that teachers can use in their classrooms as well as discussing the changes in pedagogy that support these tools. Finally, we will look at how curriculum fits in to this puzzle as well, driving the learning that happens in a classroom.

CIRECIE WEST-OLATUNJI 21st Century Counseling in School Settings (Strand) The goal of this session is to share perspectives on counseling in school settings that reflect cultural competence, social justice, and leadership skills. The Objectives are to: (a) raise participants’ awareness of their biases when working with socially marginalized clients (such as, ethnic, religious, and sexual minorities), (b) increase participants’ knowledge about cultural and advocacy competencies, and (c) enhance participants’ effectiveness by providing opportunities to learn new counseling and guidance skills.

Rick will share The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis online resources and lessons from his award winning children’s television show - Indiana Expeditions. In this presentation teachers will learn a variety of science lessons, activities, and strategies to make science come alive in their classroom. PAULINE GIBBONS Building Bridges into Text: From Talking to Reading Using a ‘before-reading’ activity, the workshop will illustrate how a scaffolded approach through spoken language enables even low-level learners to read at an appropriate cognitive level. The task creates a context for learners to predict meaning, and for teachers to model the language, vocabulary and structure of the text students will later read.

PRISCILLA BAILEY Target Audience: Appropriate for grades K-12 teachers in all subject areas Title: Teaching Vocabulary Using Best Practice Strategies Through the use of research based strategies, participants will have an opportunity to try hands on activities that demonstrate how the brain assimilates new vocabulary words into prior schema. Emphasis is placed on how students learn vocabulary, activities to reinforce learning (based on research), and the process and skills to learn words in context.

Title: Unleashing a Giant: Integrating Music into Your School Community Music, a powerful medium that can bring about emotional and cognitive responses, has existed in every community known to man. This workshop will explore ways to make music experiences accessible to the school community, and not solely the music classroom, by providing real life examples of interdisciplinary and wholeschool music projects that have enhanced student learning. Although the examples presented were designed for high school students, the concepts presented will apply to all levels of learning. Be prepared to have fun and make a little music of your own!

ALTHEA BESA Target Audience: IB, High School English teachers Title: Using the Learning Log in the IB English Classroom This workshop introduces the Learning Log as a focused learning/thinking tool for literary analysis. I will offer strategies that help students improve fluency and higher order thinking, as well as acquire skills for the written commentary. Additional focus will be placed on using the Log to enhance student reflection and transpersonal intelligence. While specific strategies will be linked to the IB Lang A1 syllabus, all of them can be modified to suit younger students.

DON CHAMBERS Target Audience: K-13 Title: Exciting Trends in Robotics Education This workshop is an overview of robotics education with examples of competitions, curricula and professional development opportunities. Robots will be demonstrated including ROVs , microrobots, VEX robots, Lego, Parallax, as well as others. There will be a bipedal robot as well as a bipedal robot’s best friend ( yes…the latest in robotic dogs). Participants will operate the robots themselves and will have all they need to begin a robotics program at their schools.

Successful Behavior Management If you can’t wait for Friday, chances are you are frustrated with behavior, whether it is the serious actions of one student, or general misbehaviors of a few. This workshop will provide opportunities to examine true cases and brainstorm strategies for improving behavior. A variety of techniques will be presented to help expand proper student conduct and manners outside the classroom, as Dawn shares how to design and implement a successful school-wide behavior management program.

The presenter will demonstrate how the unit design addresses core concepts and artistic processes that open up further art investigation possibilities for AP and IB student learners. RICK CROSSLIN Investigating Air - Sound and Pressure In this workshop participants will learn ways to teach elementary students physical science concepts of air, air pressure, and the science of sound. We will explore ways for students to apply science concepts to everyday objects. Participants will learn how to show that solids, liquids, and gases (air) vibrate and produce sound. Teachers will use a variety of everyday objects to help students understand sound. Participants will build a science apparatus to test an idea – straw oboe and palm pipes. In the second part of the presentation teachers will learn how the Bernoulli Effect can be used to excite children to learn science. The audience will be invited to participate in a series of demonstrations and discrepant events on air pressure. The activities are designed to make teachers science experts in their classrooms.

CLAY HENSLEY (AP) International University Admissions in the 21st Century: Perspectives from the College Board International admissions processes and practices are changing, both for students and their families, as well as for the secondary and higher education communities. The College Board has been convening leaders of the admissions, financial aid, enrollment management and school counseling communities to examine the current state of the profession and to develop ideas on how to improve the secondary to university transition, especially in North America. In this session, we will explore changes in international university admissions; we will review trends in transnational student mobility, with special focus on East Asia. We will discuss the role of global credentials, such as the SAT and AP, in the admissions and enrollment process at U.S. and international campuses. Any questions you have about the College Board’s programs and services will also be addressed. This interactive session will provide a forum for international educators to advise the College Board on how to better support the work of EARCOS and its member schools.

He has been director of an alternative high school, computer coordinator, technology consultant, and university lecturer. He has helped schools, governments and industry leaders improve the quality of education through technology. Audiences enjoy Alan’s humor and wit as he pushes the boundaries of how to improve teaching and learning. His areas of expertise include planning across curriculum, staff development, new school design, community building and leadership development. He has delivered keynotes and workshops in all fifty states, across Canada, and throughout the UK, Europe, Asia and Central America. Alan was named one of the nation’s fifteen most influential thinkers of the decade by Technology and Learning Magazine. In 2001, he was listed one of eight educators to provide leadership into the future by the Eisenhower National Clearinghouse. In 2007 he was selected to speak at the Cisco Public Services Summit during the Nobel Prize Festivities in Stockholm, Sweden. His writing includes numerous articles and his best-selling book, Empowering Students with Technology. Anne, Eric and Michelle will share a system that encourages students to work at a level which will maximize their own learning in Math. Students are given the opportunity to select from a three tiered set of practice material together with the ensuing formative and summative assessments. Students’ choices are based on their own sense of readiness and desire for challenge. This approach, which has been fully implemented at JIS, and more recently started at Taipei American School (TAS), has received wide acclaim. An article about the JIS program, “When Students Choose the Challenge,” appeared in Educational Leadership magazine’s November 2007 Issue. This article was subsequently republished in an ASCD E-book (2009) entitled, “Challenging the Whole Child: Reflections on Best Practice in Learning, Teaching, and Leadership.” International school differentiated instruction gurus, Bill and Ochan Powell also included a detailed description of the system in their recently published book, Making the Difference (2008). Chapter 11 was entitled “Differentiating by Challenge: Using a Tiered Program of Instruction in Mathematics.”

RICK CROSSLIN Investigating Fossils – Micro to Dino In this workshop participants will learn ways to teach elementary students earth science concepts of geology, fossils, and paleontology. Participants will learn how fossils are used to study past life. Teachers will create a model of a fossil using authentic casts from the Children’s Museum’s summer dinosaur dig conducted in South Dakota, USA. Teachers will learn how they can participate in future teacher digs. They will also learn how science names newly discovered dinosaurs. In the second part of the presentation teachers will investigate Indiana microfossils. They will receive a classroom set of fossil soil. Teachers will learn how to prepare the soil, identify the fossils, and learn about ancient sea life. Teachers will learn how to make “Paper Microscope Slides” –a must see for any teacher.

LYNNE COLEMAN Looking at Student Work Come learn how to use protocols that engage and invite all participants to look deeply into student work. As teachers, we struggle daily to find ways to best serve each one of our students – but all too often, we carry on our search without benefit of the combined experience and thinking of our peers. In this session, we will look collaboratively – from the students’ perspective -- at a piece of student work offered by one of the participants. Our aim will be to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the learning and to broaden the thinking about how to help all students, but this student in particular, best reach the next set of desired outcomes. RICK CROSSLIN Investigating Matter – From Flying Paper Clips to Floating Cans In this workshop participants will learn ways to teach elementary students properties of matter. We will explore ways for students to apply science concepts to everyday objects. Participants will learn how a “discrepant event” can be used in science instruction to help students understand science concepts. Participants will build a science apparatus to test an idea – magnetism. In the second part of the presentation teachers will learn how density of a liquid can be used to create a science investigation. Teams of two participants will use “science methods” to ask questions, create a hypothesis, test ideas, and make a conclusion. Teachers will be shown how the two lessons presented (The Flying Paper Clip and Sink or Float) can be used as science fair projects. Rick will share The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis online resources and lessons from his award winning show – Indiana Expeditions.

JOHN JOHNSTON Ecosystem Services - What does Mother Nature Provide for Free? Understanding of the numerous services our ecosystems provide and the way humans value them. Markets exist for services that are traded (energy, commodities), while other services are not purchased directly and traded (water purification, pollination of food crops). Cultural, religious and recreational services provided by systems are often valued highly but don’t easily fit a market worldview and pose challenges to their protection. The costs of protecting systems compared with repairing and engineering damaged systems will be demonstrated. Key Questions: What is an ecosystem? What is a service? How does water move form place to place? What impact have humans had on movement of water? What are the economic impacts of environmental degradation? HELEN ARNOLD Target Audience: Elementary Art Teachers, but may also be useful to MS Art Teachers Title: Expressing Mood in Art: From Analysis of every day Art Works to Critiques of Student Work In this workshop, teachers will be guided through a unit on creating mood in a painting, which has been particularly successful with fourth graders, but could be adjusted to suit any grade level. Many art teachers know how feeling is expressed or evoked in a piece of art, but how do we get the students to that point of deep understanding? Helen will guide you through this step by step exploration of coming to understand the use of subject and color in art, with lesson plan rubric, and sample student projects to view. Each member of this workshop will leave with some new ideas of investigating mood in painting with children, and if time allows a small piece of art to boot! This workshop will be beneficial to art teachers of all ages.

As they build their digital footprint, their choices, good or bad, could have lasting implications. As educators, we need to help students understand how to use environments like Facebook in a responsible way. Responsible social networking can be accomplished through a web-based site known as Ning, which teachers or “creators” control and manage. Presenters will show how they have used Ning with 8th grade students, while participants will engage in a collaborative exchange and learn about recommendations for setting up their own Ning.

Government role as a regulator has a place in environmental protection, but laws are often slow, expensive and difficult to enforce. The costs and effectiveness of grassroots actions will be discussed in comparison. JOHN JOSEPH What’s Your Style? – Learning Styles with the Brain in Mind This workshop examines how the brain processes information and explains how to construct learning episodes that utilise the talents and styles of every student. John will explain the assessment tool he developed which characterises individuals in light of the latest findings into learning. The result is a plot of the user’s profile, which can be saved and exported. Teachers use the tool to build a comprehensive view of students’ strengths and weaknesses, and to plan lesson methodologies to reach every student.

EARCOS WORKSHOP PRESENTERS PHYLLIS ALDRICH Phyllis Aldrich earned her undergraduate degree in History and Literature from Harvard University (Phi Beta Kappa), a M.A. Degree in American Civilization with study both at Brown University and NYU, and her school superintendent certification from The College of St. Rose. She began her teaching career as a Master Teacher at St. Ann’s School for Gifted Children in Brooklyn NY, then moved to upstate NY where she served four years as Special Asst. to the Pres. of Skidmore College. From 1977 until retirement in 2005, she was an administrator for gifted programs where she set up a model regional Resource Center on Gifted Education and began a range of programming for gifted learners. Her after-school enrichment minicourse program now serves 2200 students per year. She designed and ran an intensive school day program for students who reasoned at least four grades above grade level called Young Scholars. Ms. Aldrich has managed a national grant to create rigorous Language Arts curricula for highly gifted students in collaboration with the College of William and Mary Center for Gifted Education. From 1997-2001, she supervised a state-wide Goals 2000 grant “Design for Differentiation” aimed at raising student achievement of both highly able learners and struggling students at the middle school level. MA. ELEANOR BARLONGAY Ma. Eleanor Mabaquiao-Barlongay, or simply “Yek” to her students is a dancer, choreographer and educator. Her formal training in various dances such as Classical Ballet, Modern Jazz and Tap Dance started at the age of four (4). She is an alumnae of Siena College, QC. She earned her degree of Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of the East (UE). In 2000, she took and finished additional units in UE for the degree of Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education. To be sure, her love of dance and the passion to share it with others made her pursue a career in the field of arts and education. She was a member of the Royal Academy of Dance based in London. Likewise, she was a member of the premier jazz dance company Douglas Nierras’ Powerdance. As a member of the dance company, she has performed and participated in various local and international dance concerts and expositions. Presently, she is a faculty member of the International School Manila where she has been teaching Beginning Dance, Advanced Dance and ISM Dance Company. In 2008, she pursued further studies and attended a Dance and Movement Workshop in Sacramento, USA. She is concurrently the Creative Director and Choreographer of the ADB (Asian Development Bank) Dance Guild. MEGAN CAMPISI Megan Campisi received her B.A. from Yale in theater and graduate training from L’Ecole Jacques Lecoq in France. From 2001 to 2006 Megan lived in Paris where she divided her time between creating and performing her own work (including Les Musiciens de Brême, a found object puppet show and winner of the ALFA and Adami awards at the Avignon Festival 2006) and teaching theater in French public schools. She studied commedia dell’arte with Antonio Fava, puppetry with Philippe Genty and Shakespeare at RADA. Her most recent creation is Floating Brothel, based on historical accounts of female convicts transported from London to the penal colony that would become Australia in the 1780’s. Floating Brothel will be part of the Shanghai international Contemporary Theatre Festival in November 2009. For the past four years Megan has taught annual theater workshops in Chinese International Schools. She guest teaches for Yale University and at Lincoln Center in New York. www.megancampisi.com KIM COFINO Kim Cofino is currently in her third year at the International School Bangkok in Thailand. Previously, she spent five years as MS Academic IT Coordinator at Munich International School, and two years as MS Technology Facilitator at Mont’Kiara International School. Kim’s recent work has focused on helping core subject teachers utilize web 2.0 technologies in the classroom, creating a global and collaborative approach to learning. Kim helps design authentic and engaging international projects incorporating social networking, blogs, wikis, and podcasts, and whatever comes next! But after working closely with teachers in my role as professional development coordinator and strategic planning facilitator, I was hooked on educational leadership. Three years as curriculum coordinator at SAS offered me rewarding opportunities to work with teachers in professional dialogue about student learning – those experiences have been particularly enriched through our work with Critical Friends approaches.” Before accepting the position at SAS, Coleman taught IB English at the International School of Beijing, where she also worked as professional development coordinator and strategic planning facilitator for six years. Coleman moved to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where she taught IB and AP English and publication classes at the International School of Kuala Lumpur for four years. Prior to that assignment she taught AP English and the Abitur track at the John F. Kennedy Schule in Berlin, Germany. After nine years teaching in Lewiston Idaho, she began her work in international settings at Zweibrucken, Germany in a DoDDS school. RICK CROSSLIN Rick Crosslin is School Liaison for Science Learning at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis and Science Lead Teacher at MSD Wayne Township. Awards include a 2009 Emmy for Indiana Expeditions a children’s television science program, 2005 Emmy Technical Achievement PBS WFYI, 2004 Indiana University School of Education Distinguished Alumni, 2001 Christa McAuliffe Fellow, the 1999 Hoosier Association of Science Teachers Inc. Distinguished Service Award, 1998 Milken National Educator Award, 1990 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, and the Interstate Mining Compact Commission 2008 National Mineral Educator award. He has 30 years experience teaching and directing summer science camps. He is the director for the Diabetes Youth Foundation of Indiana summer camp. He has taught grades 3, 4, 6 in Indiana and Cairo, Egypt. He has taught pre-school, adolescent teens, and graduate classes. He is the host and executive director of Indiana Expeditions a WFYI PBS science television program where he shares his expertise and motto, “Science is for Everyone!”

EARCOS WORKSHOP PRESENTERS JENNIFER DELOS REYES Jen Delos Reyes is an artist originally from Winnipeg, MB, Canada. Her research interests include the history of socially-engaged art, group work, and artists’ social roles. She has exhibited works across North America and Europe, and has contributed writing to various catalogues and institutional publications. In 2008 she contributed writing to Decentre: Concerning Artist-Run Culture published by YYZBOOKS. In 2006 she completed an intensive workshop, Come Together: Art and Social Engagement, at The Kitchen in New York. She has received numerous grants and awards including a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada grant. She is the founder and organizer of Open Engagement, a conference on socially engaged art practices. She is currently an Assistant Professor and teaches in the Art and Social Practice MFA concentration at Portland State University. MARILYN GEORGE Marilyn George has been the associate executive director of the Accrediting Commission for Schools, the Western Association for Schools and Colleges, since 1987. In addition to her knowledge of accreditation and school improvement, her areas of expertise are curriculum/instruction and staff development. She has been a classroom teacher, staff development specialist, trainer, consultant, and a high school district administrator of staff development and state/federal programs. She has worked extensively with the California State Department of Education in the areas of program quality review, the mentor teacher program, and staff development programs. She has given presentations and written articles and other publications in the areas of staff development, mentoring, and accreditation. Her degrees are from Westminster College (B.S.), University of Wisconsin, Madison (M.S.), and UCLA (Ed.D.). PAULINE GIBBONS Professor Pauline Gibbons has taught postgraduate and undergraduate TESOL courses at the University of Technology, Sydney, Australia for many years. She has also worked in Sweden, Hong Kong, Laos, Singapore, South Africa, Marshall Islands, Iran, Germany, UK, and USA, among other locations. Her research interests are in content-based ESL pedagogy, and classroom discourse, and she has recently completed a research project focusing on ‘intellectual quality’ and ESL learners in the middle years. She has published extensively in the area of ESL education, including Bridging Discourses in the ESL Classroom: students, teachers and researchers (Continuum, 2006), and three books published by Heinemann for teachers: Learning to Learn in a Second Language (1993); Scaffolding Language, Scaffolding Learning: teaching ESL students in the mainstream classroom (2002); and her most recent book English Learners, Academic Literacy and Thinking: Learning in the Challenge Zone (2009). FRED GROSS Fred Gross is a Managing Project Director at Education Development Center in Newton Massachusetts. He directed the PBS TeacherLine project, the Columbus Online Math Lessons and the Electronic K-12 Math Curriculum Guide for the U.S. Department of Defense Schools. He is the CoPrincipal Investigator for the Addressing Accessibility in Mathematics and the Principal Investigator for the Building District Capacity to Improve Mathematics Learning by Students with Special Needs. Fred serves as the Math Specialist for the New England Comprehensive Center and the Project Director for the development of various online courses for teacher professional development in mathematics. Before joining EDC, Fred was the Mathematics and Equity Specialist for the Eisenhower Regional Alliance at TERC, a mathematics curriculum coordinator and staff developer for a K-8 school district, a teacher of middle and high school mathematics and science in regular and special education classrooms and a consultant to the International School in Bangkok and other domestic and international projects. CLAY HENSLEY Clay Hensley is the Associate Director for International Services at the College Board. His primary responsibility is to support schools outside the U.S. that use College Board programs, such as AP and PSAT/NMSQT. He also actively promotes the recognition of AP at universities worldwide. Prior to joining the College Board five years ago, Clay taught English literature and studio art at Serramonte del Rey High School in Daly City, CA. He has also taught at the university-level. He holds a bachelor’s degree in English literature from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, and a Masters of Fine Art in painting from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. In his spare time, Clay is an exhibiting artist based in New York City. JOHN JOHNSTON John is an exposure scientist and manager with the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Research and Development. With degrees in Chemistry and Ecology he pursues interdisciplinary research and applied systems ecology to advance the Agency mission “to protect human health and the environment.” John has been involved in projects ranging from watershed management and stream restoration for fisheries improvement to the evaluation of atmospheric mercury emissions reductions on human and ecosystem consumers of fish contaminated with methyl mercury. He is a guest lecturer for grades K-12, a science fair judge, and participates in outreach with the Community Nature Center. In his previous life he was a zoo keeper. His most recent expedition was to the island of Komodo for dragon hunting. JOSEPHINE KIM Dr. Josephine Kim is a lecturer in education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She earned a Ph.D. in counselor education from the University of Virginia. She is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and a National Certified Counselor. Her clinical skills and experiences span many contexts including residential facilities, community agencies, and schools. She has worked with varying multicultural populations through individual, group, and family counseling/therapy. Her special interest and focus includes providing education on mental health related issues to Asian and Asian American populations. She provides professional consultation and expertise on multicultural, mental health, and educational issues to various internet, newspaper, magazine, and television sources in Asia and in the U.S. She has been the keynote speaker at numerous parent, counselor, teacher, and youth conferences in Asia and in the U.S, and in 2007 alone, she presented 23 educational symposiums in Korea and 35 in the U.S.

EARCOS WORKSHOP PRESENTERS JANE KURTZ Eight years ago, children’s author Jane Kurtz was one of fourteen authors and illustrators invited to Washington D.C. for Laura Bush Celebrates America’s Authors day, part of the inaugural ceremonies. Her recent speaking has also taken her to all but eleven of the U.S. states, Europe, the Persian Gulf, Indonesia, Cambodia, India, Romania, and East and West Africa. School Library Journal called Jane Kurtz a “superb storyteller.” Her books have gathered accolades, starred reviews, and awards. Since 1994, she has published twenty-seven books: nonfiction books, professional books for teachers, picture books, and novels for young readers that draw on her own childhood memories of growing up in Ethiopia, on living through the Red River flood of 1997, on her great grandmother’s adventures traveling the Oregon Trail, and on the minor crises of her children’s lives—from a friendship gone sour to the grouchiness of a rainy day. Jane has also taught writing at the elementary, secondary, and university levels and is currently on the faculty of the MFA in children’s and young adult literature of Vermont College. She lives in Lawrence, Kansas. Her passion for books and reading and her love of Ethiopia came together in Ethiopia Reads, an organization that is establishing free libraries for children in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with Yohannes Gebregeorgis, one of CNN’s Top Ten Heroes (www.ethiopiareads.org). ARIES LAGAT Aries is one of today’s most successful Filipino fashion designers. After completing pattern making and haute couture, his surprising design ideas took him to Indonesia where he became a finalist in the Asian Skills Competition. He was one of the semi-finalists in the Philippine Young Designers’ Competition and is regularly one of the sought after featured designers in Philippine Fashion Week. In 2006 he won Grand Champion in the Mega Magazine Young Designers’ Competition and in 2008 became the winner of the first season of Philippines Fashion Project Runway. Aries will show his work and talk about his reality TV experience. KRISTI MALLY Kristi earned her PhD in Developmental Kinesiology from the University of Minnesota. She is the director of the Physical Education Teacher Education program at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Her areas of expertise include best practices in early childhood movement and elementary physical education, teacher preparation, and motor development and learning. Kristi is actively involved with numerous national programs related to early childhood and elementary physical education, including master trainer for Head Start Body Start, author of monthly physical activity calendars for early childhood, writer and host of physical activity training materials for Nike and National Head Start Association, presenter of Lets Get Moving workshops for the National Association for Sport and Physical Education, and consultant for various school districts. Kristi is passionate about helping teachers understand how to plan with a purpose, how to design developmentally appropriate learning opportunities, and how to infuse movement throughout a child’s day. MAGGIE MOON Maggie Moon was a Staff Developer for The Reading and Writing Project, at Teachers College, Columbia University, before moving to the Philippines in 2007. Prior to working as a consultant across the US with the R&W Project, she was a 3rd and 4th grade teacher in the NYC Public School System. She has worked closely with hundreds of schools within NYC and across the US, as well as presented at the R&W Summer Institutes for many years. She also worked to implement the position of Literacy Coach in NYC, as well as train hundreds of Coaches across the NYC public school system. Since moving abroad, she has had the privilege of working with International Schools within Southeast Asia, as well as local schools in Manila, Philippines. She and her husband relocated to Guangzhou, China in 2009. She is co-authoring a professional series on Literacy Coaching with Lucy Calkins, to be published by Heinemann. She is currently running an Institute for Literacy Coaches at HKIS, sponsored by EARCOS. The first cohort began in May ‘09 and will continue this Fall. Co-Presenters: ELIZA LEWIS / JILL KAUFMAN Eliza Lewis has lived and worked in Hong Kong for the last thirteen years. Eliza has taught pre-K – grade 2 and provided support services as a reading specialist. She is currently job sharing a grade 1 classroom and literacy coaching during her release time at Hong Kong International School. Eliza also chairs the Lower Primary Literacy Committee and is Literacy Coordinator for pre-K to grade 2. She is a recent graduate of the NESA Literacy Coaching Training Program.

Jill Kaufman is a grade 2 teacher at Hong Kong International School. She has been teaching first and second grade for 12 years. Her career has led her from teaching in Texas to international schools in Brazil, the Czech Republic, and Hong Kong. She has been the Elementary Language Arts Coordinator at the International School of Curitiba and the International School of Prague. She will begin a half-time Literacy Coach position in Hong Kong next year. She is currently participating in the Literacy Coach cohort sponsored by NESA and is a member of the Literacy Coaching Asia group sponsored by EARCOS.

EARCOS WORKSHOP PRESENTERS BILL KENTTA Dr. William Kentta has been a Curriculum and Staff Development Administrator in the Eugene, Oregon public school system for twenty years. Prior to, he taught high school English, speech, and journalism. He has a Ph.D in English and has taught at Oregon State University, the University of Oregon, and the University of Maryland--Far East Division, Vietnam. Bill has been an Organizational Development consultant in public schools since 1977 and has consulted nationally and internationally. He has made presentations at National Staff Development Conferences, presented at workshops and conferences for EARCOS and has published several articles in the Journal of Staff Development. Bill was formerly the Director of the Eugene Cadre, the oldest volunteer group of organizational specialists in the United States. He is currently semi-retired and continues to consult on organizational development topics. JOSH RECKORD Josh Reckord is a retired educator with 38 years of school experience. After working in Eugene, Oregon as a teacher and Head Teacher/Team Leader he worked at the American School in Japan for 10 years. While there, he was involved with and facilitated a number of projects dealing with divisional staffs, board governance and leadership and school wide initiatives. He remains interested in working with a variety of non- profit organizations including schools, community groups, and churches helping them improve their abilities to work collaboratively. In retirement, he is a volunteer member of the Eugene Cadre, a group of school employees who support organizational development in the Eugene School District. He also enjoys travel, continued work with overseas schools, and working in his garden. RUSSELL ROBINSON Dr. Russell L. Robinson has been on the faculty at the University of Florida since 1984, where he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in choral and music education and is Professor of Music and Chair of the Music Education department. Highly in demand, Dr. Robinson has made over 300 appearances as a conductor, speaker, and presenter at festivals, workshops, honor choirs, all-state choirs and state, regional, national and international conferences in the US, Europe, Asia, Africa, Central America, and Australia as well as conducting venues, which include: Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Boston’s Symphony Hall, the White House, Washington’s National Cathedral and the Wiesbaden, Germany Kurhaus. He is a past President of the Florida Music Educators Association, Interim Associate Dean of the UF College of Fine Arts, National Collegiate Chair for the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) and MENC Choral Adviser. Dr. Robinson is a published author, composer and arranger with over 200 publications in print, including choral compositions, arrangements, articles, books, and instructional DVD’s. DON SALUBAYBA A graduate in Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines, Don’s work has been exhibited widely in the Philippines and Internationally including Singapore, Greece, Japan and USA. His exciting and varied portfolio explores themes of light and shadow with Filipino symbolism and includes mixed media paintings, digital animation and puppetry. He was an Artist in Resident at the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum in Fukuoka, Japan in 2008 and currently teaches at the Philippine High School for the Arts. His work can be seen on his website http://www.geocities.com/roster15 RENCIE SANTOS Rencie is a young Filipino jewellery designer who is building up an international reputation for unique, high quality, imaginative work and unique sculptural pieces which you can wear. He works with a wide variety of materials and unusual (some would say outrageous) designs. Rencie sells his work in hotels, shopping malls and through magazines and fashion shows. He has run workshops for International School Manila, American and Canadian Embassy personnel and currently runs the fashion accessories courses at The Fashion Institute of the Philippines. His work can be seen on his website www.renciesantos.com and his European agent can be found at www.alahasuk.com STANFORD PROGRAM ON INTERNATIONAL AND CROSS-CULTURAL EDUCATION - SPICE NAOMI FUNAHASHI (SPICE) Naomi is SPICE’s Reischauer Scholars Program coordinator and instructor, and also coordinates teacher seminars at SPICE. She is a graduate of Brown University and a credentialed high school social studies teacher. The Reischauer Scholars Program is a national distance-learning course on Japan that is offered to high school students. EARCOS WORKSHOP PRESENTERS RISA MORIMOTO (SPICE) Risa is a director and producer for film, television, and the internet. Her award-winning documentary about surviving Kamikaze pilots, Wings of Defeat, aired nationally on PBS’s Independent Lens and in over 13 countries worldwide in 2008-09. She produced the independent feature film, The LaMastas, and directed, produced, shot and edited several short films and documentaries including 9066 with the late Pat Morita. President of Edgewood Pictures, Risa received her Master’s degree in film and education from New York University in 1999.

RYLAN SEKIGUCHI (SPICE) Rylan is a curriculum specialist at SPICE and his recent publications include Uncovering North Korea, U.S.–South Korean Relations, 10,000 Shovels: China’s Urbanization and Economic Development, and An Examination of War Crimes Tribunals. Rylan is a graduate of Stanford University and is a member of San Jose Taiko.

JOHANNA WEE (SPICE) Johanna Wee is SPICE’s sales and marketing associate and webmaster. She is a graduate of Santa Clara University and a former English teacher in Japan. Johanna coordinates SPICE’s national and international dissemination efforts—most recently with international conferences in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Nice, France. She is from the Philippines and takes an active role in the Filipino-American community.

BARBARA-ANN SUNDAY Barbara has taught AP Studio Art at Sentinel Secondary School in West Vancouver, Canada, for 20 years. An experienced elementary/high school art teacher, she has served in a variety of positions for Art Educators’ Associations, as a District Art Coordinator, as an art education lecturer, and as a presenter for numerous workshops. Barb has been an Advanced Placement Program Studio Art Reader for ten years, has been appointed Table Leader and is currently serving on the Steering Committee for the AP Annual Conference. She has been the recipient of the NAEA Pacific Region Award Art Educator of the Year Award and the BCATA Art Teacher of The Year Award. CAROLYN TEMERTZOGLOU Carolyn is a Health and Physical Education teacher for the Ontario Institute of Studies in Education at the University of Toronto (OISEUT). At OISEUT, she teaches in the Initial Teacher Education Program both at the Elementary and Secondary levels. Carolyn serves on several provincial committees that advocate for quality daily health and physical education programs. She is an Ontario Physical Health Education Association (OPHEA) Master Trainer conducting workshops across Canada. Carolyn received the Ontario Supervision of Physical and Health Education Teacher Advocacy award in 2007. EARCOS WORKSHOP PRESENTERS CIRECIE WEST-OLATUNJI Cirecie A. West-Olatunji, Ph.D. holds the position of Associate Professor of Counseling at the University of Florida. Dr. West-Olatunji is a nationally recognized presenter (over 100 presentations), trainer, and author in the areas of multicultural education and counseling. Internationally, Dr. West-Olatunji has provided consultation and training in Osaka, Hiroshima, Tottori, and Fukuoka cities in Japan in the area of culturally relevant anti-bias education for young children. Cirecie West-Olatunji has provided educational consultation to a PBS children’s television show on diversity through KCET-TV in Los Angeles, CA (“Puzzle Place”). Her most recent research endeavors have included the development of a culture-centered disaster mental health counseling model based upon her coordinated outreach experiences nationally as well as internationally. Dr. West-Olatunji is a graduate of Dartmouth College and attended Teachers College of Columbia University where she pursued graduate studies in the area of Multicultural Counseling Psychology. Dr. West-Olatunji holds a doctorate degree in Counselor Education from the University of New Orleans. She is also a state-approved domestic and family mediator. REGINALD YUSON An internationally acclaimed contemporary sculptor, Reggie’s large scale permanent public art sculpture can be seen at High Street, Serendra and in many of Manila’s ‘park’ malls. “The public art here is not installed on pedestals, as we are so used to seeing it presented,” he explains. “Here you relate to it according to your proportions; according to your scale.” He studied Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines, Diliman. At first he majored in painting, but soon gravitated to sculpture. It has taken him more than a decade to achieve his current success where his clients provide the space and the budget and let him do pretty much as he pleases. BILL ZEIGLER Bill earned his B.A. in history from San Diego State University and an M.A. in education with an emphasis in professional development in gifted education. He teaches world history and literature in the humanities program at San Marcos High School in California. Bill has been a Reader, Table Leader, and Question Leader for AP World History, as well as a Reader for AP U.S. History. He authored part of the first AP World History Teacher’s Guide and was a reviewer for the latest version of that resource. Bill has always had a keen interest in world history. He was a fellow of the Woodrow Wilson National Foundation at Princeton University and was awarded a two-year NEH fellowship to study India and China at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. He has presented at the World History Association, the National Council for the Social Studies, and the AP Annual Conference, and serves as a member of that program committee. Bill is an international AP and Pre-AP® consultant for the College Board in world history and interdisciplinary strategies. International School Nurses of Asia (ISNA) Conference Speaker DEBBIE DUCKWORTH Debbie has worked as the Clinic Administrator at the International School Manila for the last 18 months. She previously qualified and worked as a psychiatric, general medical, theatre and trauma nurse in the UK and then as a Cancer Nurse Specialist in the Channel Islands. In Thailand she accompanied school children on expedition as the ‘Expedition Nurse’ and in Prague she set up and ran the school clinic and taught in pre-school classes. For the first 2 years in Manila she worked as a volunteer with street children and trained health care workers to work in squatter areas of the city. EARCOS TEACHER PRESENTERS HELEN ARNOLD International School Manila Originally an Elementary School Classroom teacher, Helen has been teaching Art for the past ten years in four international schools. She has worked with both elementary and middle school students. Her ongoing goal lies in developing a balanced program in which students become increasingly aware of not only specific art areas, but also the various strands that make a skilled and knowledgeable artist as a whole. PRISCILLA BAILEY International Christian School - Hong Kong Priscilla has taught ESL students in the US and Hong Kong throughout her teaching career. Serving as the literacy coordinator for International Christian School in Hong Kong, she presented workshops and trainings for elementary, middle, and high school faculty using participant engagement and research driven strategies. In addition to presenting at ICS, Priscilla has been invited to present at Hong Kong Baptist University on differentiated learning strategies. EARCOS TEACHER PRESENTERS DON CHAMBERS American School in Japan Don has taught chemistry and AP chemistry at the American School in Japan for 20 years. He writes for ROBOT magazine and this year will introduce the first VEX robot competition to Japan. He has thoroughly researched robotics and has his finger on the pulse with regard to the philosophy, vision, technology as well as the communitybuilding emphasis of robotics. He has a passion for promoting STEM through robotics.

ERIK CUSTER Seoul International School Sports have always been a great avenue for Erik Custer. Through playing, teaching and coaching, Erik has used sport to enrich his life globally. From Canada, Gaelic Football was something new to him but through a Korean-Irish soccer team he began to play Gaelic in 2003. Since then he has taught and coached Gaelic in Canada and Korea, highlighted by winning the Asian Gaelic Games as a player and twice coaching women’s teams into the finals.

NEIL GRIFFITH Canadian Academy I am currently in my 19th year of teaching PE on the international circuit (UK, Spain, the UAE, China, and Japan), and this is my 5th year at Canadian Academy where I am also serving as Head of Department. I am excited to say that I am still learning. My inspiration for this workshop lies in my desire to inspire PE teachers to make the link between outcomes and common PE missions. SANDRA HAHN International School Bangkok Sandra Hahn began her association with Project Zero in 1999 while at The American School of The Hague, the Netherlands. Since then she has developed a strong interest in researching the use and development of the principles of “Cultures of Thinking” embedded within both Teaching For Understanding and Visible Thinking both in her own classroom and within the schools where she works. She is currently a grade 5 teacher at the International School Bangkok, Thailand. KATHERINE HALLAM / DIANNA PRATT Singapore American School Katherine has been teaching for twelve years, six on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada and the others in Singapore at SAS. Originally, Ning was a collaborative project with Dianna Pratt, who is tech-savvy and eager to share her knowledge. Dianna hails from Texas and has been teaching for twenty-six years. She believes that students will need an on-line presence and Ning allows the skills for responsible social networking to be taught before they make thoughtless mistakes. JULIE HEINSMAN Morrison Academy Julie Heinsman is a TCK, is married to a TCK and has raised two children who are TCKs. A US citizen raised in Taiwan, Julie is now working at the school she calls home. She has been a High School counselor and teacher at Morrison Academy in Taiwan since 2000. MAUREEN HYHAM Mont’Kiara International School Maureen Hyham has been a physical educator for 32 years in Canada and internationally. Her undergraduate degree in Physical Education is from the University of Victoria and her Masters degree in Leadership and Administration is from Gonzaga University. JAMIE MCDOUGALD Singapore American School Jamie McDougald is a middle school PE/Health teacher at Singapore American School. As a PE teacher Jamie has always sought ways to make fitness activities and fitness testing more enjoyable for students. He believes ‘Fitness Blast’ offers students a fun, low-risk, and challenging alternative to traditional fitness testing. KELLY MCFADZEN Singapore American School Kelly McFadzen is no stranger to education, having taught art for 15 years. Kelly joined Singapore American School in 2003, prior to SAS, she worked in Cairo and in Manila. Encouraging students to connect with working artists and art galleries, it is Kelly’s mission to prove to her students that artists are real people and museums are more than a building full of old stuff. Originally from Guelph, Ontario, Kelly holds a Masters degree from State University of New York, as well as Bachelor’s degrees from Wilfrid Laurier and Queens Universities. MARCY MILLER Morrison Academy Marcy is enthusiastically passionate about excellence in education and instilling a desire for life-long learning in her students and colleagues. AMY NARAYAN / JULIE SCHNELLER Taipei American School Amy Narayan has been a Resource Teacher at Taipei American School at both the lower and middle school levels for 11 years. Although she works with students in all subject areas, teaching struggling readers to read using multi-sensory strategies is her passion. Julie Schneller is a Reading and Resource Teacher at Taipei American School. Over the past 15 years, she has helped children learn to read in many capacities: as a classroom teacher, private tutor, reading specialist, special educator and mother. MARIA NIEVA DALATEN Cebu International School Maria Nieva Dalaten is in her 8th year of teaching middle and high school social studies subjects at Cebu International School, Philippines. She is also an 8th grade homeroom adviser. Previously, she served as a subject coordinator and CAS co-coordinator. KAREN PALKO / LYNNE SMITH International School of Kuala Lumpur Karen Palko and Lynne Smith have been teaching Middle School Physical Education together for the past 5 years. Both have also taught Elementary and Karen has taught High School in the past. Lisa Maren Thompson is the Middle Years Program Visual Art Teacher at Taejon Christian International School in Daejeon, South Korea. Prior to this position, Ms. Thompson served as an artist in resident and arts education consultant for the Perpich Center for Arts Education and Arts for Academic Achievement in Minnesota, USA. Becca Barniskis is a poet, teaching artist, freelance writer and consultant in arts education, as well as a founding member of the Center for Artful Collaboration in Minnesota, USA.

NATHALIE PERES International School Yangon Nathalie Peres is a Parisian who has lived in Yangon for 10 years. She started her career as a French educator for French companies and the French School in Myanmar in 2001. Since 2006, she has been enthusiastically teaching elementary French at the International School Yangon, in Myanmar. She has taught in the middle school, and she currently also teaches ballet, modern dance and yoga at ISY.

EARCOS TEACHER PRESENTERS ERICKSON PEREZ Brent International School Manila Ericson Perez is a science and special education teacher, with bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Brown University and The George Washington University, respectively. This is his fourth year at Brent International School Manila. He has presented workshops at the 2007 EARCOS teachers’ Conference in Bangkok and at the 2009 Special Education Network in Asia Conference in Beijing. FRANK PETERSON Gyeonggi Suwon International School Frank Peterson has been living and working overseas (Turkey, Japan, Egypt, and Korea) for 20 years. He started in Nepal doing development work with local schools, employing various memorable examples of technology. His experiences around the world have had a profound impact on his IT philosophy: Frank is all about authentic use of technology to improve student learning. CESAR REYES Taipei American School Cesar Reyes heads the MS Art Department at Taipei American School. He has taught both middle and upper school students in Taiwan and New York. He also teaches ceramics at Teachers College, Columbia University in their graduate program and is working on exhibiting his architectural sculpture. STEPHEN ROMARY International School Bangkok Stephen Romary is an educator with 16 years experience helping middle school students develop into skilled and passionate writers. In particular, Stephen knows how to harness the power of Web 2.0 technologies for student learning and achievement. DAVID ROSS International School of Kuala Lumpur David Ross has National Board Certification from the US, 14 years Elementary school experience and is presently teaching at the International School of Kuala Lumpur.

DAVID RYNERSON American School in Japan David has taught high school English in New England, Beijing, and is now high school English department head at the American School in Japan. His pedagogy is largely based on experience in the New Hampshire Writing Program, where he was influenced by Tom Newkirk, Tom Romano and Don Murray, among others.

SOMPORN SAE HYM Ekamai International School Mrs. Somporn was born in Bangkok, Thailand. She finished her Bachelor degree in Elementary Education in Singapore and Master degree in Teaching English as a Second Language in Australia. She is presently teaching grade 6 Math. She has created 2 levels of “Funny Vocabulary” and 2 levels of “Funny Occupation” game cards for students who want to improve their language skills. ERIN THRELFALL Indianhead International School Erin is an actor/ teacher who has been acting for more than 30 years and teaching Drama for 14. The founder of award winning programs that used Drama and Arts to reach at risk youth in New York, Pennsylvania, and in the Liberian Refugee Camp in Ghana, West Africa, Erin was the recipient of the Presidential Merit and Talent Award and has received recognition from President Bush, Mayor Street, and UNHCR for her commitment to enriching lives through the arts. Erin currently teaches K-12 Drama in South Korea. KATHERINE TRUEMAN / ANGELA ERICKSON Seoul International School Katherine Trueman and Angela Erickson both teach in the English department at Seoul International School. Angela has a Masters degree in English Education and Katherine has a Masters in Technology and Curriculum. As Head of Science at Bangkok Patana School he is leading the department in using OneNote as the medium of pedagogy and is providing training for colleagues from all faculty areas across the school in preparation for a one laptop per student program.

BENJAMIN WAGOR Xiamen International School Benjamin just started a contract this year with Xiamen International School. He has been an international teacher for close to 10 years, working in countries in Europe, Latin America, Middle East and now Asia. Benjamin is a specialist in Model United Nations. He has been involved with MUN as a high school student, university student and has created or enlarged MUN programs at every school where he has been employed.

FANG WANG Western Academy of Beijing Wang has been an IB Chinese A teacher for ten years. During these ten years she worked in various school settings including a local Chinese government school and international schools. She has gained abundant experiences in developing the IB Mother Tongue Programme. As an experienced and professional IB trainer, Fang has run many successful IB regional workshops. Since 2005, she has worked as a moderator for MYP Chinese A and has been working with the IB Online Curriculum Centre as an Online Faculty Member for Chinese A since 2003.
