Where Are They 8 Now? : Recent Grads
W
e’re all good here at Early College Academy. We’re one week away from completing the first quarter of the school year. With that being said, our first semester classes are just about halfway over. We are happy to have every teacher and administrator returning from last year, and we’re looking forward to moving into the second half of the semester, which should bring some exciting things for ECA.
ECA started a basketball team and a dance team this year. The tryouts are over for both teams, so we’re eager to see what the season will hold. We also started a partnership with The Ohio State University and are lucky enough to have a couple members of the College of Social Work join our team this school year. Learn more about what ECA and a few student writers have been up to this fall by reading through our very first school newsletter. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the creation of ECA Spotlight! - Ms. Marburger’s Journalism class
E.C.A. celebrated 53 graduates last May. Shout out to each of them for moving forward in their education and/or careers!

2016 Presidential Election: The Issues Trevor Fridenmaker With the 2016 presidential election coming up on November 8, I found some of the most important issues and where the two candidates, Hillary Clinton (D), and Donald Trump (R) stand on them.
Abortion Clinton thinks that abortion should remain legal, but also safe and easy. For example, she stated that you shouldn’t have to feel intimidated by walking to a health center, or have to drive halfway across the state and take time off work just to get one. Trump is against abortion and said women who still get one should receive some type of punishment.
Gun Control Clinton, contrary to popular belief, doesn’t want to just take everyone’s guns; she thinks we do need a big reform though, keeping guns away from violent criminals
but still respecting the rights of those responsible enough for them.
to see if it would really be a benefit or disadvantage
Trump thinks the opposite and doesn’t really want to impose any limitations. He thinks that if there were more opencarriers at present-day shootings and/or terrorist attacks, then the problem would be easier to subdue. For example, an open-carrier could’ve taken out an active shooter and be a hero before police arrive.
Death Penalty
Continuing the War on Drugs Hillary thinks those with drug problems shouldn’t be punished, but their addiction should be treated as a health issue instead. For example, instead of a heroin addict being incarcerated, they’d be taken to a hospital to help them beat their addiction and get back to normal.
Hillary was formerly against the death penalty, but with the rise of terrorism she thinks it should only be reserved for such occasions such as that. She also thinks there were many times when the death penalty was appropriate but wasn’t carried out. Trump, however thinks the death penalty is vital and says that it will keep murderers unable to murder again for sure. *Stances found on Procon.org
Trump isn’t sure if we should continue or not and says we need to study it more
Violent Protests in NC “Tuesday, October 4 marked two weeks after Scott was shot and as of now, protestors are still on the streets..”
Jordan Mitchell Protests escalated in Charlotte, NC after police officer Brentley Vinson was serving a warrant to the wrong house. Brentley said he saw a man,Keith Scott, go to his car with a gun and then come out of the car with the gun and he thought he was a threat, so he shot and killed Scott right outside his apartment complex.
The protest started at the apartment complex where Keith was shot and killed. Then the protesters moved to Interstate 85 where the protesters blocked off the highway. People started a fire in the middle of the interstate; some protesters then destroyed a cop car. The police finally got them off the interstate by shooting tear gas and forcing them off the highway. Bottles and rocks were thrown at the officers and officials say there were 12 police injured. Tuesday, October 4 marked two weeks after Scott was shot and as of now, protestors are still on the streets.
Protestors line the streets on September 22.
E.C.A.
Several hundreds of people gathered outside the complex Tuesday night, chanting “no justice, no peace!” and holding signs saying “Black Lives Matter.” The shooting happened on Tuesday, September 20.

Current Event Corner– Students provide summaries and thoughts on a few important events that have been in the news recently:
New York and Jersey Bombings Chelesia Duran
Two bombing incidents happened back to back on Saturday, September 17,2016. The first bombing was in New Jersey at a Marine Corp charity race in Seaside Park; it was a garbage can explosion. There were two other unexploded bombs found nearby and no one was wounded in the blast. Later that night another blast happened in New York's Chelsea neighborhood. When the bomb was found after it blasted they found a handwritten note next to it. It contained ramblings, including references to previous terrorists, like the Boston Marathon bombers. Surveillance shows a man believed to be Ahmad Khan Rahami dragging a duffel bag near the site of the West 23rd Street explosion about 40 minutes before the blast ,according to the FBI. He was also seen about 10 minutes later; surveillance video shows the same man with the same duffel bag on West 27th Street ,law enforcement said. Rahami was captured after a owner of a bar in Linden, New Jersey found him sleeping in the doorway of his bar Monday morning. Harinder Bains, owner of Merdie’s Tavern, recognized
Rahami and called the police. When the officers responded, Rahami pulled out a handgun and opened fire, striking an officer in the chest. A foot chase started, during which Rahami shot at a police car, causing a bullet to graze another police officer in the face. The chase ended when Rahami was shot multiple times. He was taken to the hospital for surgery. The officers that were shot were taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. “New York bombing: Investigators search for suspects, motive”, CNN
The blast near the Marine Corp Charity Race in New Jersey came from the inside of a trash can and did not injure anyone around.
Pipeline Protests Trevor Fridenmaker Dakota Access and the Army Corps Engineers were working on an oil pipeline that passes through 4 states. They’re currently halted because the Standing Rock Sioux tribe sued the Corps because they don’t want the oil pipeline to go through their land, as well as passing under Lake Oahe. A federal judge actually ruled in favor of the construction, but the Department of Justice said construction has to be halted within 20 miles of the lake. The ruling from Judge James Boasberg has sparked protests all along the construction route, some even violent. “Government Steps In After Judge Denies Tribe's Request to Stop Pipeline,” ABC News

The protests have been going on for a while now, and many arrests have been made. The government is said to be taking steps toward beginning construction again, but not without a fight. “Protests Disrupt Pipelines Across the West,” NPR

The Purge: Election Year Faybion Johnson The Purge: Election Year came out earlier this year , and it was directed by James DeMonaco. Frank Grillo , Elizabeth Mitchell, and Mykelti Williamson starred in The Purge: Election Year. This movie basically is about two sides, “The Senator and The Government” ,The Senator wants to get rid of the “Purge” but the government does anything in its power to get rid of her . 12 hours they have to go thought mayhem and destruction. This movie represents the release of anger and removing the homeless and other groups.
I thought this movie was interesting. Just watching the trailer makes you want watch the whole movie. It’s entertaining seeing this different world and all the aggression, and watching people figure out how to survive through it makes it even more interesting. It explains why the purge exists and why they have to go through it. I liked this Purge better than the second one, Purge: Anarchy.
The Purge:Election Year was released on DVD on October 4.
The Fast and the Furious Ziy’Queyra McAfee The Fast and Furious movies have been a hit since 2001. The most recent movie is Fast and Furious 7; it came out in 2015. The movie is about a group of friends who became family over time trying to defeat someone who is out to kill them. In the midst of thinking of ways to defeat this person one of the characters runs into a guy who offers them a deal to defeat the guy only if they saved this girl who is a computer
hacker, so they can use a device she only knows how to use. With them making this deal it causes more conflict in this 2hr 30 min movie. They are planning to make a Fast and Furious 8. I think that they should not make this movie unless they are going to dedicate the movie to Paul Walker. Paul Walker ( Brian) was the main character in every movie, but he died right before they finished Fast and Furious 7. If they

continued to make more movies it would not be the same because The Fast and the Furious are Paul Walker’s movies. I don’t believe you could make movies and change the main character after 7 movies. Making another movie wouldn’t be the same for the cast members because he was like a brother to them. The Fast and Furious movies are my favorite movies and I just don’t believe they can be made without Paul Walker.

Student Interviews Ziy’Queyra Mcafee I’m here today on September 20, 2016 in Early College Academy classrooms interviewing students that have been attending the school for a while. I picked the two students I picked because they are two different students who have to different opinions about the school. Fred Williamson Interviewer: What do you think about Early College Academy? Fred: I think that E.C.A is a great school. It gives students good opportunities. Interviewer: Do you think all the students here take advantage of these opportunities? Fred: No, I think that most students only come to hang with friends. Some do take the opportunities given seriously. Interviewer: Is there any advice that you want to give to the other students who don’t take advantage of these opportunities? Fred: If I have any advice it would be to actually take the advantages here seriously because other schools don’t have what E.C.A has. Interviewer: Can you tell me some of the opportunities the school gives? Fred: One of the opportunities is that teachers here are more interactive with the students than most public teachers would be; They are more willing to help students. Interviewer: What do you think about the teachers and administrators? Fred: I think teachers like Mr. Green can be a great teacher to play around, and have fun with, but he can become very serious and non-playful. Interviewer: What are your plans after school or any job interest? Fred: I want to be many things, but being a photographer is my career choice. Stephan Cortledge Interviewer: How long have you been attending E.C.A? Stephan: Two and a half years. Interviewer: What do you think about E.C.A.? Stephan: It’s cool or whatever but people don’t come to do they work they come to clown. Interviewer: Do you think that the people who come to “clown” should take school more serious? Stephan: Yes, Most def. Interviewer: What is some advice for other students who don’t take school serious? Stephan: Take school serious before you fail. Interviewer: What do you think about our teachers and Administrators? Stephan: Aw, they cool for real and they help you out if you need it. Interviewer: What are some things youwords. take interest in? This story can fit 75-125 Stephan: Basketball, Track, My Comp 1 class, and Taraji P. Henson. Talking Teaching with Mr. Green Jordan Jackson
Mr. Green in his “cave”
I have been interested in the profession of teaching and decided to ask a few questions about it, so today I’m here with Casanova Green. He just so happens to be an English and Multimedia Journalism teacher here at Early College Academy. To get to know Mr. Green, I thought I’d ask a few questions just to get an idea, so keep reading to see his responses. Interviewer: What do you like most about your job ? Mr.Green: Um, interaction. It helps me do a lot of relationship building and that helps me teach. Interviewer: What is the greatest success you’ve had in teaching? Mr: Green: It would be seeing kids graduatewho were told they weren’t going to graduate..
“Here’s the thing about this building: most of the student that go here have exceptional ability so that means doing one on one instruction”
Interviewer: How do you provide support for students with exceptional ability ? Mr.Green : Here’s the thing about this building: most of the student that go here have exceptional ability so that means doing one on one instruction , even using Schoology as a tool. Interviewer: How do establish and maintain good communication with students? Mr.Green: It goes back to relationship building. Students don’t care what you know until they know you care and the beautiful thing about it is I’m blessed to be able to do that

because I’m honest. It’s not like I just come out and say obey me; I actually take the time to get a bond slowly with them. Interviewer: How do modify your teaching to students who are struggling ? Mr.Green: I teach with them in mind. This is my second year here, so I have to think about students who aren’t here and those who are used to being a class clown. I also have to think about what might happen and as far as struggling students. I give my fourth block and give them time to get things done. Interviewer: What is your approach to classroom management ? Mr.Green: Create a safe zone for students and of course respect and being in control...well probably not being in control, just be firm and you have to have a bond or they just won’t trust you. Interviewer: What personal strengths do you find helpful in your teaching ? Mr.Green: Um...being really creative. That’s a huge help. I’m thankful I’m able to make lemons out of lemonade and being that I have a performance back ground means I can easily be entertaining and still get the point across. Being text savvy is a huge advantage too. Interviewer: Are you okay with your words being printed in a news letter ? Mr.Green: Yes of course !!!!

Do You Have Any Hidden Talents? Playing Football Art Singing Drawing Writing & Fixing and Selling Tech. Singing & Journalism
Ziy’Queyra McAfee is ECA’s September, 2016 Student of the Month. Ziy’Queyra has several career interests, but she is mainly interested in nursing because she enjoys working with children and would like skills that are applicable to real life. Her main goal in life is basically to be stable and not have to live paycheck to paycheck. She would rather live within her means and enjoy life then obsess over material things. Ziy’Queya’s advice to other students is to, “Try as hard as you can. Take advantage of the opportunities here. College Isn't free, so ask

OSU Brings Hope for ECA John Charles Early College Academy and the College of Social Work at The Ohio State University have partnered together to provide additional services for students. The program partners social worker interns to help with students for nonacademic situations. It involves one of the interns, Ms. Clay, who will be able to show herself in school of ECA on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday. Ms. Chelsea Clay ,born in Columbus in June 6, 1991 grew in Gahanna. Ms. Clay graduated from Mount Vernon Nazarene University in 2013 with a Bachelors of Social Work. Currently, she is pursuing a Master of Social Work at OSU. Her experience at ECA is a part of her year-long internship experience. She wanted to do this because she wanted something new and enjoy the school environments. In the future, she hopes to receive licensure as an Licensed Independent Social Worker, work as a social worker, and serve in Africa for two years. By coming to ECA they hope to help students climb up and achieve better results.

Touring ODU by Morgan Lapinski On Friday, October 7, ECA students enrolled in Project JumpStart were invited to Ohio Dominican University for an informational meeting, as well as a campus tour. Project JumpStart is a partnership program between ECA and Ohio Dominican University which allows students to finish their high school education, while simultaneously collecting college credits. Pamela Allen, the coordinator for this partnership, as well as board member at ECA, welcomed us to the campus.
Where are they now? Monae Cox I am an LPN now I work at Westminster Thurber and Louis Vuitton I'm still working on getting my RN. I'm very proud of being the first woman in my family to finish college. My favorite memory is graduating high school early so I could accomplish my dream of becoming a nurse sooner than what I thought. My advice to the upcoming classes of ECA students is to never give up regardless of how hard things could become. I went from being homeless and trying to find a way to get to school and work plus trying to find a place to sleep... To having my own place, car, and working two great jobs. Nothing is as far as it seems.

During her presentation, Ms. Allen was sure to highlight the most popular degree programs and pathways offered at ODU. While ODU offers over 40 Academic Majors, some of the most popular include; Biology, Pre-Nursing, Software Engineering, and Business Administration . At the conclusion of the presentation, students and faculty were able to tour the campus of ODU, guided by students of ODU as part of their workstudy program.
*Graduated: 2014 *I am now a junior at The University Of Cincinnati *The accomplishment I am proud of the most is getting into college and sticking with it because I always thought school wasn't my thing but it turned out to be! *A goal I'm still working on would be learning how to manage my money better. *My favorite memory at ECA is when I first met my now best friend Jamil High and of course when Mr.Wright gave me my diploma!! * My advice for current students would be Don't Give up, you'll have to work for everything you want! NOTHING IS HANDED TO YOU! *And I am a criminal justice major with a focus in corrections with a minor in social work.
Ryan F. Colvin Year graduated: June 2015 Right now I'm going to ITT Tech for graphic designing to help me as a game commentator on YouTube, my Youtube name is RTRC. What goals are you still working on: Getting my Youtube channel out there more and putting out better content. What accomplishments are you the most proud of: Enrolling into ITT Tech and not giving up on my YouTube channel early on. What are your best memories of ECA: The teachers that helped my progress and all the friends I made. What is your advice for current ECA students: And my current advice for other ECA students would be stay determined, figure out what you want in life and go for it but remember, to be able to play hard you have to work hard.

Students were able to see the fitness facility and dance studio, where they have access to using their Student ID cards. Additionally the library on campus, as well as the Math, Writing and Tutor Help Centers are all additional resources the students enrolled in Project JumpStart have access to using their ID cards. The day concluded by Ms. Allen generously providing all the students with not only their Student ID’s they had taken their pictures for at the beginning of the day, but also some “goodie bags” provided by ODU. Students even received ODU t-shirts, so they could show their Panther Pride! Ms. Allen also welcomed any student enrolled in Project JumpStart to attend any events hosted by ODU, specifically the Collegiate Career Fair on October 21st, 2016.
yellow tickets
This week, we began passing out our new reward tickets. This is a tradition teachers will continue to honor weekly, by giving yellow tickets out to students who are showing exemplary respect, effort, behavior, kindness, or whatever else they decide to praise. Every Friday, there will be a drawing of the tickets earned by students and submitted to the raffle. The person with the winning ticket will be given a $5 Subway gift card!!
Transition students walk around Ohio Dominican University, learning more about what the campus has to offer.
Where are they now? (cont.) Lanisha Prince *My graduation year was 2015. *I am a sophomore majoring in Psychology at Capital University. *I am still working on the goal of eventually graduating with 3 bachelor degrees. I am testing how I like Crimonology and Sociology now, so there is a strong possibility that those will be my other 2 majors. *I am most proud of maintaining my minimum 3.0 G.P.A. It did fall during my freshman year, but things are much better now that I'm adjusted to the fast pace of college classes. *My best memories mostly include getting the time to interact with with the staff. A lot of you are the reason I managed to get into 7 out of the 8 universities and colleges I applied to. *My advice for any and all current ECA students would be to take advantage of the great support you have in the staff there, ask every question you can think of (even if they seem stupid), enjoy the time you have there because the world gets real very fast (if you don't know that already, you will learn), think through all of your actions and options, especially with school; college is not for an everyone so if you know it is not for for you, think of alternatives, set goals, and map out how to get there.
