Estonia vibrant transformations in the defence industry Defence innovation plays a vital role in the Estonian economy. We have been a member of the EU and NATO since 2004 and our long experience in the engineering and electronics industry serves as a good basis for defence and dual-use manufacturing. Today, Estonia is also well known for its achievements in cybersecurity and cyberdefence, and both are Estonia’s trademarks in security and defence policy within NATO and the EU. Estonia’s vibrant and competitive defence industry is an organic part of the national defence capability and a credible partner to our international allies and businesses. The aim is to create synergy through the cooperation of national and international capital in order to strengthen Estonian national security, the defence industry, and its export. A good example of international cooperation is the number of defence ‘primes’ that have established a firm foothold in Estonia and which are also members in the Estonian Defence Industry Association (EDIA). Companies such as BAE Systems, General Dynamic, MBDA, RUAG, and SAAB are reliable partners for our local companies and for the Estonian Defence Forces. This is an outstanding example of cross-border industrial collaboration. To give a boost to the defence and security sector development, and in cooperation with its most active members, EDIA has created the Estonian defence and security industry cluster. The aim is to support the emergence of new innovative and ambitious technology-based products and services (RD&T), improve their accessibility for international cooperation, and also to increase export potential. Estonia is home to the NATO Cooperative Cyber-Defence Centre of Excellence, the EU IT Agency, Skype, and the most start-ups in the world per head of the population, as well as being a new leader in costeffective, lean and agile technology and products that leverage the country’s edge in innovation.

Estonian Defence Industry Association Estonia is home to the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence, the EU IT Agency, Skype, and the most start-ups in the world per head of the population.

The Estonian Defence Industry Association (EDIA) was founded in 2009 and today has a hundred members, including six international defence contractors. Estonian defence and security industries are well-known for their lean delivery of innovative technology when it comes to supporting the transformational defence and security programmes. Our vision is to create synergy through the co-operation of national and international capital in order to strengthen the Estonian defence and security industry and its export.
