Energy-efficient construction in Estonia, the country of forestry More than 50.6% of Estonia’s mainland is covered by forests. In the past few decades, the area of forests has increased significantly here. Forestry and timber have historically been one of the main pillars of the Estonian economy. Timber, a self-renewing resource, has traditionally been the most prevalent component in Estonian building and construction as well as the main export article. Products from Estonian enterprises are renowned all over the world. In the European Union, Estonia is the fourth largest exporter of wooden constructions. Of the total production, 85-90% is sold outside Estonia. The main target markets are Scandinavia, Germany and Great Britain, but the partners also include Japan, South Africa and South Korea. In 2013, the export of Estonian wood constructions increased 14% in the first seven months, from EUR 109 million up to EUR 124.30 million. Among other timber-based products, the majority is taken up by products with greater added value like sawn and planed timber with 16.9%, wooden furniture and its parts 13.5%, prefabricated wooden buildings 13.1% and constructional goods 12.5%. Our living environment has a significant impact on our health. An ecological, energy efficient way of thinking has added new technologies and materials to the centuries old Estonian tradition of hand-hewn log houses. While modern solutions might at first leave some people sceptical, most soon realise that construction quality needs to be taken to a new level. The main asset of Estonian enterprises is flexibility and the capacity to offer tailor-made solutions in today’s building and construction sector.
