AMAZING GLAZING

D

We meet local ceramic artist Annette Kalle Baptisa and find out more about her and her amazing work

uring the local crafts fair held last winter in Cacela Velha a sparkle caught our eye. We were lured to a stand full of beautiful, skillfully painted and handcrafted ceramics. We spoke with German born Annette Kalle Baptista about her passion for crafting and ceramics. What made you come to Portugal and more specifically, The Algarve? I have come to hate that question, I feel like I’ve been asked that question every day for the last 38 years! To be honest, It was by accident. I came from Marroko and stopped at the Camping in Monte Gordo and I haven’t left since. I loved the Serra de Caldeirão, the herbs, the

10

simplicity etc... I bought a piece of land and started to live here. I also appreciated how people treated handicrafters, they have much more respect for it, plus I wanted children and here people love children. How long have you been producing your art? I’ve been crafting all my life, working with different materials such as making marionettes, jewellery using silver, producing cloth and more. In 1999, I started a course in tile painting and got hooked on it and bought a kiln, but I also like to work with clay, it's more physical whereas tile painting needs an incredible amount of concentration, especially because you don’t see the colours while you are painting as they change when they are fired. For example, in the photo where I am painting, the painting looks violet but after firing, it will be

cobalt blue. How did you find your style of art? Style is always a process and personally I like to change my style frequently, though when working with ceramics sticking to one style is much easier because trying anything new is a battle, especially when it comes to glazes. This is the reason why most ceramic workers have one style they stick to their whole life. In my tile painting I often do portraits of birds and plants because that’s what I like the most or the classic style of Azuleijos, for my private work I lean more towards abstract and expressionist pieces. What has your involvement in art brought you? My involvement in art mainly brought me an income and an identity. It's a lifestyle, sometimes a very solitary one, that’s why I also like to sell at fairs because that’s where we meet each other and exchange ideas. What is the hardest part of your art making process? The hardest part in ceramic work is to accept that around 30 percent of the time, something goes wrong in the firing. That means you can do something for hours and then it is ruined (That’s why most stick to one process to diminish the loss). Where is your favourite place? I love being in the Serra, near the Guadiana, or in the middle of my herbs! What is your perfect day? My perfect day is when I'm in perfect peace of mind! Or being with my friends in the countryside or on the beach or dancing. Finally, where can people find you? Tel 960021377 Facebook Azulejoannette Shop of my handicraft association Asta, in Tavira in front of the Palácio da Galeria where I also do workshops in tile painting or clay modelling. All my artwork is signed as “Annette”

With a certain image to uphold, Tattoo artist Gualberto Sousa certainly has the look. We met him at his shop in Olhão to find out what he's really like

A

little early for our appointment, we are in front of the impressive custom-made facade of the Caverinha Tattoo Shop in Olhão, this is definitely not your average local tattoo parlour. We soon notice a black Chrysler PT Cruiser pulling up, without a shadow of a doubt, we know our interviewee has arrived. Olhão born Gualberto shows us into his studio, which is nothing quite like we have ever seen before. Floor to ceiling airbrushed art adorns the walls featuring old movie classics and favourites of Frankenstein and Marilyn Monroe, a glass top coffee table displays tens of photos of his art on his clients. In the front corner murals of a hotrod, cars and bikes create an area for merchandise and a display unit of awards won for a custom made and designed chopper. We learn that this is his pride and joy, built together with his father. When we ask about the airbrush art on the wall, Gualberto surprises us by saying it is his. We quickly realise we are speaking with an artist that is multi-talented across different platforms and various mediums. Gualberto started off as an airbrush artist and often worked together with his friend graffiti artist SEN (for interview with SEN, see November 2020 issue). Due to his experience as an airbrush artist, he was able to start tattooing immediately on people without needing to go through an apprenticeship. In 2008 he made the switch and began tattooing from a friend's house. During this time he built up a small client base which meant expanding. He created a home studio from which he worked for four years. In 2013 he would open the doors of his own studio, this is where the most incredible work we have ever seen is created at the skilled hands of an amazing tattoo artist. We find out that Gualberto’s favourite style is realism, however, he can pretty much do any

style. In fact, he has a lot of experience in medical tattoos, if you haven’t heard of it, it is worth looking up. He has transformed surgical scars and recreated nipples and areolas due to mastectomy, allowing many people to regain confidence. I think we have all heard of horror story tattoos, ones that have been ill drawn, faded beyond recognition and names of lovers now long forgotten about, but immortalised in ink. Gualberto nods his head and says 'coverups', he gets a lot of these and is able to fix them, it allows old memories to be in the past, where they sometimes belong. As we leave his establishment Gualberto gives us a big smile and says it is never too late to have your first tattoo and it doesn’t hurt half as much as you may think it does. Everyone says it hurts less than they thought it would. On a side note, having personally been in the studio and even watched a friend having some artwork done, I can say the attention to detail and hygiene in particular is flawless. If ever I would consider having something done, it would be at the hands of Gualberto only. Churches of Tavira

A unique exhibition of artwork by Ove Slyngstad depicting the churches of Tavira in Pen & Ink

A

rtist Ove Martin Slyngstad, was born in Aalesund in Norway and has lived in Tavira for 19 years. An Exhibition designer by trade, Ove has been drawing in Pen & Ink for his whole life, in fact, his art helped finance studies in graphics school. The art of drawing using Pen & ink is thousands of years old and used to write documents that transformed world history, also to illustrate later editions of the Bible. Sadly, this art form is dying out, with traditional painting being

18

more forgiving, and therefore more popular. With Pen & Ink, one mistake and your whole drawing is ruined, there is no second chance, rip it up and start again! Ove is the first known artist to draw all of the 30 churches of Tavira. His drawings start with copying a photograph, but he will return perhaps three or four times to the subject to absorb the finer details. His first exhibition 'Churches in Tavira' runs from 16th-29th April at Casa André Pilarte, Rua Dom Marcelino Franco, 8800-394 Tavira (Next to Santander bank).

JESSICA DUNN

J

essica Dunn is a British artist with bases in the Algarve and London. Born in the UK, daughter of comedy actor Clive Dunn and actress Priscilla Morgan, Jessica was encouraged to take her own artistic path. After relocating to the Algarve, to enjoy the fantastic southern light and laid back pace of life, she has remained in Portugal, where she paints full time in oils and acrylics. Her recent works have transitioned from the figurative to the abstract. Her paintings take you on a journey, through

www.eastalgarvemag.com

textural impressions of land, sea and sky, inspired by the elements, the intense southern sunlight and drama of the ever-changing landscape. Jessica Dunn exhibited in galleries and museums in Portugal, the UK, France and Italy. Her participation in SIAC (the International Symposium of Contemporary Art) at the Guarda Museum resulted in an invitation to return in 2020 and her work remains in the museum collection. Her work is held in private and public collections worldwide. She is a member of the Quinta Art Collective

www.eastalgarvemag.com

and holds an open studio every year at her private home gallery. Dunn’s paintings have been featured in Hello! Magazine, Wall Street Journal online and World of Interiors magazine. ARTIST STATEMENT I am inspired by the Algarve landscape. I try to capture an impression of its transient nature, working across the canvas from dark to light, layer-by-layer, brushing on, scraping off, over and over as a colour-mood begins to develop and a story begins to emerge. Tonal layering creates an impression of distance

and depth and a focal point appears organically, drawing the viewer in. Working on several pieces at a time, moving from one to the other with fluidity and energy, a rhythm develops… For me it's about the paint and the expressive marks created, which gradually evolve into something familiar, an imagined or remembered landscape, a sea, a sky, or just a feeling. The visual experience becomes an emotive one, an illusion of being immersed in nature, reflective and timeless, of walking into a painting and feeling lifted.

All you need to know, by property expert Robert Bijker

W

hen you are in the market to buy your dream home in the Algarve it is important to be well informed about all aspects of the property of your interest, one being the energy efficiency summarised in a classification. This classification will give you an indication of the level of comfort and energy efficiency of the property as well as the electrical and gas equipment such as air-conditioning, underfloor heating, solar panels, boiler etc. The document also provides advice about what you can do to make improvements and is issued by technicians authorised by the Agency for Energy (ADENE) – a public body that regulates the energy certification of buildings (SCE). If you are selling your house or want to rent it out on a long term basis the property needs to have an energy certificate before you put it on the market. By Portuguese law this energy classification must be mentioned on all publicity, e.g. real estate agencies websites, portals, social media such as Facebook as well as in print. Simply stating that the energy classification is in progress or pending is not enough. The law makes no difference between a company and a private individual. The only difference is the amount of the fine in case of non-compliance. The fine varies for a company between € 2.500 to €44.890 depending on the level of infractions and for individuals € 250 - €3740. In Portugal the Direção-Geral de Energia e Geologia is the department who enforces the law regarding energy qualifications of buildings. In general energy labels allow consumers a better understanding of their carbon footprint and energy consumption. As global warming and the fight against greenhouse effects gains pace we will all have to be more conscious of our own energy consumption and take

www.eastalgarvemag.com

measures where possible to reduce it. The energy classification for homes goes from A+ being the most comfortable and energy efficient to G being the least efficient (e.g. you might as well leave the windows open). The system for housing energy classification was introduced on the 20th of August, 2013. Once an energy classification for a property is made it is valid for 10 years. It is important to take into consideration that a washing machine from 2013 with an A rating will no longer qualify for this rating in 2021, the same can be said about properties. To put things in perspective it is good to check the year the property was built or even better, check when the rating was issued. Engineers confirm that properties with an A rating 10 years ago without improvements would under the current methodology achieve a B or C qualification. The energy classification system for properties was first introduced in 2006 for new projects. The range of ratings was from A+ to G. Since January 2021 the ratings are from A+ to F. Older ratings are still valid until the 10 year period expires. All residential properties need to have a rating. However, in the case of a dilapidated property (ruin) getting a declaration of the deteriorated state of the property from a qualified engineer or architect that the building is not in a good condition for living is also sufficient and makes it exempt from the energy qualification system (excluído do SCE). For new

projects a pre-qualification is needed before starting the marketing. It is clear that a higher energy efficiency of a property can lower your energy bill and save you hundreds, sometimes thousands of Euros per annum. However a lot depends on your lifestyle too. If you are considering making your home more energy efficient, speak with a qualified engineer first. Some investments lead to better energy savings than others. On a like for like basis a similar property with a higher energy rating should command a higher selling price than the one with a lower rating. The 'Open House' of Happiness 36

Introducing House of Happiness, a place for everyone to enjoy, meet like-mindinded people, keep fit and stay healthy

H

appiness is in the balance - Most of us will have heard this adage, or one similar in the language you are fluent in, and it holds merit. The Founders of House of Happiness, Erik Sprotte and Iléa Menu, are firm believers that balance is key to living a long, healthy and happy life. Erik has spent a lifetime in HR, this is where his passion for finding happiness started, researching, studying and delving deep to learn about BLUE-ZONES (The Blue Zones - By Dan Buettner). This along with with the global events over the last few years made the humanitarian eager to start a venture to create a community to get back to normal, one free of anxiety, where nature is able to do what she does best, which is to relieve stress and bring calm back into our daily lives. All he needed was a partner in crime, which he found in his yoga teacher Iléa. At the time Iléa was busy with her own yoga studio in Tavira Yam Shala, after 3 years, she felt the need to expand, to go beyond yoga, yet was confined by a lack of space. The timing for these two like-minded individuals to meet was perfect, within a year the concept would be realised on a plot situated on 5000m2 of land in the countryside on the outskirts of the city of Tavira. Given Iléa’s background, it is quite easy to assume this is just another yoga studio, however, Iléa and Erik both explain that while yoga classes are given here, the House of Happiness has far more to offer.

The foundation of happiness lies in the balance of 5 elements - physical fitness, mental fitness, wellness therapies, healthy eating and community engagement. The House of Happiness is a place and space to come to everyday, a melting pot where everyone is made to feel welcome, where you can take a break and meet and make friends, enjoy food that is good for your body and even a peaceful place to work from. A variety of energetic and physical treatments are available to promote wellbeing such as intuative healing massage and Chinese medicine. Furthermore, in March of this year House of Happiness became a Portuguese Association open to everyone to better fulfil its mission of community engagement. All fees paid to the Association are used to provide services to the members. You can try any service by becoming a member for a day! All the prices are on their website www. houseofhappinesspt.com House of Happiness co-founder and General Manager Iléa Menu is forming partnerships with other East Algarve associations to support their mission. Our House is open to everyone transforming to a happier self. Working together for a meaningful purpose is what makes us happy. We will support you with gratitude and kindness. It’s time to let the sunshine in! THEN OLHÃO

FOUND US...

W

... and we weren't even looking! Hank and Carina's story of how they came to live in and love Olhão

elcome to our monthly column celebrating Olhão. After exploring Portugal top to bottom from Braga to Tavira enjoying so many coastal and inland locations in our RV, we decided Olhão was the place to buy our home to celebrate our “golden years”. Olhão was not on our radar at first. In fact, the discovery of Eastern Algarve was a pleasant surprise with the scale of development so much less than areas to the west. A chance winter rental introduced us to Olhão, a place we quickly found attractive for many reasons. “Walkability” is, above all, a main highlight and each month we will introduce you to places only steps away from our front door. We hope you will enjoy our column! THIS FISH STORY HAS LEGS…. AND ARMS? :-) Looking at the far right side of the main photo, you’ll notice part of the local marina where boats rest, anchors up, waiting for the next journey. Being on the water here is much of what Olhão is all about. The building on the left side of the photo presents another anchor that secures this place, the Olhão Mercado seafood market

40

building. Together with its twin outlet to the east where fresh veggies, fruit, meats and cheeses are offered, these structures serve local daily shoppers, delivering a friendly person to person experience worth returning for! Olhão boasts the largest fishing port in the Algarve and the Mercado, built in 1915 and renovated in 1997, it is the Algarve’s largest and most interesting fresh fish market. Long before the first stirrings of tourism and hotels and so many great restaurants here, seafood was the core income and what “Olhanenses” served at home. Simple entries like “Xarem” which combined corn flour with varieties of the local catch sustained the local citizens here. Today several local places offer that dish on their menus. Our first Google Earth investigation of Olhão, once we secured our place to stay here last winter, suggested we could look forward to a short walk to the Olhão Mercado to purchase and bring home ingredients for our daily dinner. So true! Fresh tuna has been a favourite and at about half the cost as in the US or Sweden. I’ve discovered octopus at a local restaurant (read on), but have yet to bring one home to cook. I sure know where to find one when I’m ready!

www.eastalgarvemag.com

With so much variety, Carina and I have a lot to learn about how to prepare and cook these edible creatures we’ve never seen before! For the largest selection, go there on a Saturday morning, although it gets busy with shoppers arriving from all over the region. The Mercado is closed on Sunday. Respect the language and bring a translator app on your phone! Cash is king here. MOGNO While the Olhão Mercado has clearly been well established for many years, Mogno, located west of the Mercado directly across from the marina access gate and next door to El Torino, is only one of those things. The risk involved in opening a restaurant from scratch is really high at the best of times. Joseph Viegas opened Mogno on June 24th, 2020. This was perhaps the unluckiest day to open a restaurant in recorded history. The virus I will no longer name was just getting started. Everything was closing. You remember the rest. Yet in spite of all this, Mogno is now very well established, like Monday lunch every seat is taken. I think I know why. It is more than the menu offering innovative healthy entries. It’s the staff. They offer something that we old folks recognize with envy, youth! The main secret ingredient delivering success, based on my experience there, is joy. Mogno is a fun place served by joyful young staff and those innovative healthy entries fly out the door and, in his words to me the other day, Joseph is amazed. Mogno offers seating both indoors and out, with the patio area delivering the almost always pleasant weather and on Sundays, live music. In this shot, Fernando Daniel delivers his guitar and voice on a recent weekend. He and

other local musicians entertain more days and nights each week as the warm weather and visiting crowds arrive for the high season. We discovered Mogno during that lowest of low seasons, last winter! It was our first dinner out in Olhão. Combined with sweet potato mash, the flavour and texture of my first octopus (polvo), dinner was more than I was expecting. Mogno became an instant favourite!

For our full introduction, see our first column online in the December 2021 issue. (https://www.eastalgarvemag.com/) Fine Print – Questions or Comments? Write to us at hankryan2003@yahoo.com We choose to focus on businesses here in Olhão where we have actually been customers first. Any future advertising from these businesses that supports Eastern Algarve Magazine is purely coincidental :-) Here is the answer to the arms and legs question. Experts say an octopus has six “arms” and two “legs”. Now you know!

CTT INCREASES THE PRICE OF REGULAR AND REGISTERED POST!

T

his month, in our ‘Spoof’ we are speaking about the new mail merge between Publicar Portugal, the Algarvian postal system and your favourite companies that you love to hate, DDT Discharge International and Fermes. You might never receive a package ever again! Unfortunately, the DDT website only has broken links and no contact numbers. The one given was actually for an Aquarium in Porto, they were not happy their number was advertised incorrectly. They revealed their lawyer is on the case against publicar and we were asked to never call their shop again! It is making their staff unwell being screamed at by angry ExPats and the fish might not be fed ever again. The only other choice was a chat room link, and so the search for a 'customer service representative' began. We write into the clumsy chat application: "Hi Virtual ChatBot", can you help us" and the bot says no, not unless you select from one of 20 options. One hour later: the chat seems to connect and patch us through, then it disconnects. Eventually it recommends calling the service centre where we listen to Fado music for an hour until the phone disconnects again. The feedback and distortion of the wailing music nearly burst our eardrums. Despite being repeatedly told we would be answered shortly, the phone line was never answered and we, once again, returned to the 'help and chat room'! Two hours later: Hello this is Guntrip. Can I help you? Expat: Thanks Guntrip! Finally, it is good to speak to someone! We would like to see what your postal merger will mean for our readers in the Algarve in Portugal. Ten minutes of debate follows, of thinking we are in India and then being told 'the Algarve is in Africa' the computer in the end says “no, your postcode does not exist”. We were cut off three more times, after ranting and

42

raving at them, our request was escalated. A mere four days later, a public relations representative actually gets in touch with us! Expat: Thanks for speaking to us from Public Relations! We simply would like to know will your merger improve postal services for our ExPats? PR Rep: We would like to say certainly! But we are sure it will not! Our aim is zero carbon emissions, despite our smokily degenerative vehicle fleet. We recommend for senders to take a photo JPeg of the item to serve as a souvenir, as it is likely to be the last time it will ever be seen. Forwarding with our green agenda, we hope our services dissuade anyone from using our national - meets private service. Expat: This does not sound helpful at all! Our readers are often talking about how difficult it is to send and receive items, especially to countries outside the EU. PR Rep: Oh don't worry! We can assure you that it is not only non-EU countries that rarely receive mail without an ordeal, but that all customers will face an onslaught of difficulty. It is true, to send a postcard to Britain, Canada or say the US, now requires fifty forms which we refuse to translate. Our illiterate workers will be sure to find an error on these forms, without being able to evidence it! Even if custom duty is paid, we will demand another non-refundable payment and ensure afterwards that the item cannot be located! (Laughs): If you will, our Room 101 will become an archive of never received and unlocatable items! Our workers' favourite packages are designer clothes, luxury gifts and other items they unpack! Expat: It seems you take pride in an appalling service. Why is this? PR Rep: Indeed, we hate whiny customers who expect packages! We have all sorts of fun tricks to prolong the agony of delivery. For example, we say something is out for delivery! Of-course it isn't! You could camp out all day in the front garden and the driver will say you were not

in, or there was a problem with your address! Our drivers also get non-refundable commissions for redeliveries! You can pay a lot and never actually receive your package. Expat: And you take pride in this? PR Rep: Absolutely! It is like our public offices! Our employees have the typing speed of three words a minute. If, by some miracle, there are no endless queues of customers, an actor will come from the line and talk for an hour about their life to the representative. If you get cross, the representative will shut the kiosk immediately! It delights us to not know anything about the postal service. We insist our grumpy and belligerent staff never give satisfactory answers! It is a hoot! Portugal may be one of the safest countries in the world, but our shops need bulletproof glass! (Chuckles). Expat: But your website, however rubbish, says you work with international partners! PR Rep: Oh we do! Sometimes we send our customers in the Algarve to Spain to the sorting houses! Of course their post isn't there and they look at them like they are insane too! These are international companies, but we have chosen only the ones guaranteed to give you maximum stress. And then if you ring one of our customer service lines, they are taught the tricks of the trade, to say they cannot hear you and to hang up on a crackly phone line. If anyone ever gets fresh with us, be assured your address is entered into our shitlist and your address will never be found again! Expat: And if we don't want to use your service? PR Rep: Oh well, too bad! Enlist an expensive private courier! We work with the Government for maximum paperwork, so good luck with that! If you truly cared about the planet you wouldn't post at all. Actually scrap that! There are too many items we like to receive in our depot, if you know what I mean. Anyway, I like your voice, you sound cute… What's your inner leg measurement? Oh, go on.. Tell me cheeky!

Olhanense celebrate with goalscorer Xavi (10)

MONSOON MAYHEM

S

Brought to you by Chris Wright

everal hundred Belenenses supporters made the journey to Olhão for the opening game of Phase Two and enjoyed the hospitality of the home club as fans chatted about their clubs’ historic past. Only ten years ago Olhanense finished eighth in the Premeira Liga and reached the quarter-finals of the Portugal Cup whilst Belenenses won the Primeira Liga title in 1945–46 and were relegated from the Primeira Liga for the first time in 1981–82. Four years ago CF Os Belenenses (Club) and Belenenses SAD (limited liability sports company) went their separate ways, as the "Protocol on the use of Estádio do Restelo '' ended and the

T

SAD refused to negotiate a new contract. So from the 2018–19 season, Belenenses SAD (professional team) play their Primeira Liga home games at Estádio Nacional, whereas CF os Belenenses registered an amateur team in 1ª Divisão Distrital de Lisboa, the equivalent to the Sixth Division (lowest Portuguese division). Subsequently, the professional team saw home attendances of only a few hundred, whereas the new amateur team clocked up gates of approximately 5,000. On a wet, blustery day at the José Arcanjo Stadium both teams knew the importance of a good start and showed their attacking intent from the off. Midway through the first period the Olhanense were awarded a penalty for

handball and top scorer Xavi calmly stepped up to send keeper, Marcelo Valverde, the wrong way. The swirling wind nearly helped the home side to a second goal when Leandro’s long range effort was brilliantly saved by Valverde who then managed to recover before the ball crossed the line. A minute before the break Belenenses drew level when Ruben Araujo’s speculative shot squirmed under the diving body of Ricardo Galli; the Olhanense custodian will surely feel he should have done better. The second-half was an anti-climax and when, fifteen minutes from time, a cloudburst turned the José Arcanjo pitch into a ‘waterpark’ both sides were happy to settle for a point.

ANGUISH IN THE AZORES

he long trip to Praia da Vitória, on the island of Terceira, to play GD Fontinhas resulted in a 2-1 defeat for the Moncarapacho team. Adeilton Cruz gave the home side the lead on sixteen minutes, but the visitors clawed their way back into the game when Paulo Matos slotted home in the 73rd minute. Five minutes later the islanders were back in front when Princebell Addico scored from the penalty spot. Any hope Moncarapachense had of salvaging a point disappeared five minutes from time when André Dias picked up a straight red card.

SPANISH OPPONENTS WELCOMED IN TAVIRA

E

ast Algarve Football Club gave a very warm welcome to a visiting group from Estepona on the Costa del Sol. A series of games kicked-off with a lively and action packed game for the veterans (over 35s) with the home side taking the honours 1-0. Without some spectacular goalkeeping heroics the score would have been considerably higher. The super-vets (over 50s) were next to show their skills with EAFC starting brightly against a skilful Estepona side who finished the stronger winning 4-1. The second day’s action got underway with a slight mixing up of the over 35s teams due to a few Estepona injuries, aching limbs, or even too much beer on the Saturday night! A few over 50s joined the younger players and the two evenly matched teams played out a high-scoring 4-4 thriller. To round off the weekend action EAFC Super-vets were hoping to restore some pride. The first-half was full of incident and action, but Estepona had the edge in the second half to claim a 3-1 victory. A most successful weekend both on-and-off the pitch with reciprocal visits already in the planning stage.

SEE THE LIGHT Tudo Bem, the first LineQuartz centre energetic treatment in Portugal... Try it, you will love it!

W

e love the diversity Olhão has to offer. We recently met with Rahima Petignot, from France and the owner of Portugal’s first LineQuartz energetic treatment centre. Rahima always felt the desire to accompany people in order to help them transform their lives, to face the difficulties that we all face at some point. After 15 years of consulting, she decided to turn the page of wage labour and launch herself without a safety net. Rahima kindy shares her interesting journey with us to how she got to where she is now In 2015, I created my company, Solutions Keys 2 Change (SK2C). My credo, support for change and personal and professional coaching. Our first stay in Portugal was in 2009, where we had a wonderful stay visiting the Algarve coasts, we were based in São Brás de Alportel. It was in 2016 that we met Olhão, we were based in Quelfes and came to celebrate my husband's birthday with the whole family. We strolled through the streets of Olhão, amazed by its cobbled streets and its very special fisherman's houses, the mosaics, the Moorish chimneys, marisco festival, market and islands. My favourite island is undoubtedly "Farol". We really fell in love with this city and the Olhão way of life. Carpe Diem… In 2017 we went back to spend our summer

www.eastalgarvemag.com

holidays in Portugal, this time to visit the Alentejo on the side of Ourique, Santa Luzia. It was then that the crazy project of settling in Portugal with our 2 children was born. We had a mission and went back to France with our hearts filled with joy and hope. In 2018 we bought our house in downtown Olhão, we organised the renovation to be ready for us at the start of the 2019 school year. In September 2019, we disembarked as a family in Olhão, a complicated year followed, the house was not ready yet and only a few months after our arrival the pandemic entered. Work and projects were on stand-by, the fear of the virus stressed us out and lockdown temporarily prevented us from moving on with our future… It is with all this stress and lack of forward movement that in 2020, I meet Yannick Delgado who presented me with his invention: the LineQuartz. (I was very tired and worn out when I went to see him at his office). I discovered this device, and it was fabulous. I finally relaxed, and I got a good sleep for the first time since all these events. I took the opportunity to deepen my knowledge of the world of energy care. Yannick then suggested that I launch a LineQuartz centre in Portugal… A year later, in December of 2021, I opened my first LineQuartz centre in my favourite city, Olhão. Tudo Bem in Olhão had opened its doors.

WHAT IS LINEQUARTZ? The LineQuartz is a Non-Invasive Medical Device created by a FrancoPortuguese M. Yannick Delgado in 2016. It is a complete energy care device that combines 4 therapies in one: Light Therapy, Chromotherapy, Music Therapy and Lithotherapy. It is particularly useful to relieve people suffering from: • Burn-out • Stress, anxiety, seasonal depression, sleep disorder • Loss or lack of self-confidence • Concentration disorders • Hypersensitivity • Chronic pain • Anxieties, fears • Muscle recovery, And more… LineQuartz acts directly on the cells of the human body, it helps boost the immune system and soothe the entire emotional system. LineQuartz therapy is done in 4 steps. The first step is to cleanse the physical and mental cellular memories in the body. This is the crystallisation of stress. The second is a release and an emotional rebalancing. There is then a liberation of the physical body. Finally, we are subjected to a global rebalancing of the organism and a deep relaxation. BENEFITS It is an exceptional therapy to enhance your well-being. It frees our cells from the weight of our emotions, especially the oldest ones which hinder us. After the therapy session our body is restored to new conditions. This rebalances the biological rhythm of our body and reactivates our self-healing power. • Deep relaxation • Appeasement • Reduction of pain • Increases selfconfidence • Improves sleep quality. FOR WHOM? The LineQuartz is suitable for both adults and children. However, its application does not in any way replace medical treatment. It can be a complementary treatment to medical care. It is also suitable for our animal friends. PACKAGES AND PRICES 4 packages are available: Discover: 1 discovery session - 30 mins - €15 Relaxer: 1 relaxation session (Shamanic meditation) - 45mn - €29 Starter: 4 sessions to rebalance energies – 4 X 60 mins - €160 Booster: Sessions, to be defined by the therapist, for specific symptoms – 45mn – 45€ Gift Vouchers are available for all sessions. LEST WE FORGET

By Chris Wright

A

s Eastern Europe is thrown into turmoil, thoughts turn to WW2 when tyranny last threatened world stability. On the 19th of April it will be exactly 80 years to-the-day when two young airmen lost their lives as their aircraft crashed near Gibraleón in Andalusia, just sixteen kilometres from the border with Portugal. On the morning of that fateful day their Bristol Beaufighter Mk. VIc, with registration T4936 belonging to 236th Squadron of the Royal Air Force took off from RAF Trebeluze (St Mawgan, Cornwall), bound for the Middle East with a stopover in Gibraltar. The plane lost control, possibly being shot down by Spanish anti-aircraft batteries, as eyewitnesses described seeing flames coming from the aircraft before it crashed seconds later. Its two crew members, the pilot 27 year-old Sergeant Geoffrey Lennox Avern and the operator/observer 21 year-old Sergeant Philip Bernard Crossan, died instantly. Philip Bernard Crossan was the son of Bernard and

48

Elsie Margaret Crossan, of Borough Road, Middlesbrough, Yorkshire. Sgt Avern was born on the 27th of April 1914, in Gunnedah, New South Wales. He qualified as a teacher in 1932 before enlisting in the Royal Australian Air Force. After completing his military training he saw service in South Africa before being promoted to Sergeant and joining the 236th Beaufighter Squadron at Wattisham, near Ipswich, Suffolk, some 10,000 miles from his home in Australia. The airmen were initially buried by the Spanish authorities in Gibraleón Roman Catholic cemetery, but were removed in June 1951 because the graves could not be properly maintained. Now their remains languish in the British Cemetery at Huelva. On the wall behind these graves is a plaque commemorating Able Seaman Percy Longthorpe who died on 14 December 1918, aged 24, following an explosion on HMS Adventure that was undergoing repairs at the docks in Huelva. The overgrown and dilapidated British Cemetery adjoins the immaculately kept Nuestra Señora de la Soledad (Our Lady

of Solitude) where the body of Welshman Glyndwr Michael rests, an integral part of Operation Mincemeat. The British Cemetery is scheduled for renovation but not until 2023! In the meantime it is hoped that volunteers will be given permission to clear the area around the airman's graves in time for a small group of people, including the Defence Attachés from the Australian and British Embassies, to lay flowers in homage to these young men. On entering or leaving the British cemetery, it is easy to walk past the bullet-scarred exterior of the gates and walls without recognising them as tangible and moving evidence of Huelva province’s involvement in the Spanish Civil War. Against these walls, between 1936 and 1941, hundreds of republican sympathisers and activists from across the province, many whose identity remain a mystery, were executed by firing squads. Sergeant Crossan’s headstone bears the inscription, “For honour, liberty and truth he sacrificed his glorious youth”. Unfortunately these very words now ring true for so many young people in Ukraine.

ALFA ROMEO

Giulietta

The beautiful curves, shapes and lines on this car are timeless. A true Italian Classic

T

he first Giulietta to be introduced was the Giulietta Sprint 2+2 coupé at the 1954 Turin Motor Show. Designed by Franco Scaglione at Bertone, it was produced at the coachbuilder's Grugliasco plant near Turin. Owing to overwhelming demand upon the model's introduction, the earliest Giulietta Sprints were hand-built by Alfa Romeo with bodywork made at Bertone and Ghia providing interior and electrical components. Approximately 200-1000 "preproduction" cars were made in this manner, with numerous cosmetic and mechanical differences from the later production cars built at Grugliasco. A year later, at the Turin Motor Show in April 1955, the Sprint

was joined by the 4-door saloon Berlina. In mid 1955, the open two-seat Giulietta Spider, featuring convertible bodywork by Pinin Farina. In 1957, a more powerful Berlina version, called Giulietta T.I. (Turismo Internazionale), was presented with minor cosmetic changes to the hood, the dial lights and rear lamps. Carrozzeria Colli also made the Giulietta station wagon variant called Giulietta Promiscua. Ninety-one examples of this version were built. Carrozzeria Boneschi also made a few station wagon examples called Weekendina.

Photos taken at the private collection in São Brás de Alportel; 'Fábrica Móveis Beirão' where the family owners are happy to show off their fabulous collection. See our article in the February 2022 edition for more details, online at www.eastalgarvemag.com.

READERS Q&A

E

ach month we receive different questions from our readers, although some of these questions are related to specific situations, sometimes the answer may help you to better understand the tax system in Portugal and answer the queries from other readers. We moved from Sweden in 2015 and we will still benefit from the NHR status for a few more years. Can you let us know how the Portuguese tax authorities will tax our pensions once our NHR finishes at the end of 2024? We are especially concerned now that there is no Double Tax Agreement between Portugal and Sweden. Currently your pensions are declared on your Portuguese Tax Return, but you are not paying any tax on these in Portugal. Even though there is no double tax agreement between Portugal and Sweden, this will not affect your tax position and you will continue to benefit from the exemption that the NHR offers you until 31-12-2024. From the 1st of January 2025 the situation will be different because you no longer benefit from your NHR status and will be taxed per the progressive tax rates. If until that date the Swedish and Portuguese Governments do not sign a new Double Tax Agreement, this will have some effect on your tax liability in Portugal. Normally when there is a double tax agreement, the private pension is taxed in the country of residency. If there is no DTA in place, Sweden will continue taxing you, but the Portuguese tax law still allows you to deduct the tax paid in Sweden. The way this tax credit works is not automatic, and you will need to obtain tax residency certificates and evidence of the tax paid at source, when submitting your yearly tax return in Portugal. This way the tax paid in Sweden will be credited against the tax payable in Portugal, in the same way as if there was a DTA in place. This will also be applicable to those that have NHR and pay 10% tax on their pensions. It will be possible to claim a credit of tax up to 10%, but it needs to be requested separately, when submitting the tax return. We have been living in Tavira since September last year, but we are still waiting for our Residency Permit. We have a meeting with SEF to complete our D7, but the meeting is only in June. Do I need to file a tax return for the period we were residents in 2021? We want to apply for the

Q A

Q 52

NHR, when should we do it? You will only be able to change your tax residency once you have the residency permit, therefore you will be non-resident in 2021 (despite being here) and resident for 2022 from the date you change it at the tax office. This way you have no obligation to submit a tax return for 2021, unless you had income from Portuguese sources. In terms of NHR as you will become resident only in 2022, you will have until 31-03-2023 to submit your application. I am 37 years old and recently moved to Portugal. I used to be selfemployed in the UK as an IT Developer and most of my clients are in the UK. What will the taxes I pay be when I move my business to Portugal? Would it be better to continue as self-employed or to set up a company? My yearly income is around 75-100k. Providing you were not resident in Portugal in the previous 5 years, you will be eligible to apply for the NHR (Non Habitual Resident) tax status. This will give you several tax benefits and exemptions and, as in your case, you have an eligible occupation your maximum tax rate will be 20% irrespective of your level of income. If you register as a self-employed under the simplified regime, the 20% will be levied on 75% of your gross income. You can benefit from a 12 month exemption for social security payments, but please note that after the 13th month, your social security contributions will be assessed each quarter, based on your level of income. As an alternative to this 15% effective rate (20% of 75%) you can also be taxed as 20% of your profit under the normal organised accountancy regime. But please note that in theory this should only be an option if you have considerable investments to make at the beginning and or if your costs are higher than 25% of your gross income. Another option is to create a company, which is eligible to be on the fiscal transparency, and which activity is one of the listed as per the NHR rules. In this case, you will be

Q

A

taxed at 20% and not the company and there will be no tax on the dividends because the fiscal transparency implies that the profit of the company is taxed in the personal sphere, and this means that as the profit is already taxed it can be transferred to the shareholder without any further taxation. In view of your level of income, we would normally recommend choosing the company route, but you can start as a sole trader, take advantage of the Social Security exemption and then set up the company when you are reaching the end of the exemption period. We recently moved from the US to Tavira. Can you let us know if we will have to pay Social Security contributions on the whole income, such as dividends and capital gains from stocks and shares? When you move to Portugal, there is no obligation to contribute to the Social Security system, unless you work in Portugal, either as an employee, or as self-employed. This means that your investment income will not be assessed for Social Security purposes. Please note that once you become a resident, you will have access to the Portuguese Health System, but to apply for the D2 or D7 visa in Portugal, applicants will need to purchase travel insurance with health coverage for one year. Proof of this cover will be requested along with other documents when applying for the Visa. Please feel free to send us the questions you may have to helpdesk@allfinance.pt. We will select some of these to be published.

MANAGING FINANCES AS A COUPLE

oining bank accounts may sound like a daunting task, and some couples may not even consider it an option. Because so many people are meeting online now, there is more potential for romance fraud. While romance fraud is a worst-case scenario, its very existence increases the worry of what could happen should you merge finances with a partner. As more women gain financial independence, they are becoming an increasingly important contributor to their household’s income. Because of this autonomy, some women may be hesitant to open a joint bank account with their partner for fear of losing that freedom. This is especially true for younger women. In a 2018 report from Bank of America, it was found that 72% of partnered or married millennials have combined finances. This is a dramatic decrease from previous generations who were closer to 90%. Though some may feel apprehensive about it, combining finances with your significant other can be beneficial to your relationship. A recent Stockholm University study found that it can result in both better

54

communication and a stronger foundation. Having a joint bank account creates a sense of openness within your relationship. Having the ability to review your joint bank statements may help you feel confident in your partner’s ability to manage their finances. This can then result in a more trusting dynamic between the two of you. In fact, the study found that couples with shared finances have fewer finance-based conflicts. No matter what the circumstances are, it is always wise to carefully assess both yours and your partner’s financial situation so that you can make an informed decision. This week, we’re addressing what you should be aware of before joining bank accounts, plus giving you tips on how to manage your finances as a couple. Questions to ask yourself before combining finances Whether you are married or not, it is important to ask yourself: 1 Does my partner have loans or balances on their credit cards? 2 Do they frequently use their overdraft? 3 Does my partner have a poor credit score? 4 Do they have problems with debt? If you answered ‘yes’ to any of the above, you may want to reconsider opening a joint bank account. This is because you will have equal liability. For example, if your relationship ends and you decide to close the account, your bank can refuse to do so until the debts are settled. Therefore, if you have any doubt at all, there is no harm in keeping your finances separate until you feel confident that your partner has gained financial stability. If you do decide to combine finances but still want to retain some of your financial independence, you may decide to keep a personal account. It is always advisable to have a back-up plan. If your relationship were to come to an end, you then have the safety of falling back on your own funds that you kept out of the joint account. Contrastingly, if you decide not to combine finances and keep them

separate instead, the two of you can still work together towards a united vision for your financial future as a couple. What about combining investment accounts? You will also need to consider your investments when making financial decisions with your spouse. If you have each been investing individually, you will need to determine how you will manage your investments moving forward. Tradition has been for married people to

In a 2018 report from Bank of America, it was found that 72% of partnered or married millennials have combined finances. This is a dramatic decrease from previous generations who were closer to 90%. combine everything. While it may seem appealing to combine investments, as it would result in an inflated portfolio balance, it is not always advisable to do so. There are both advantages and disadvantages to combining your investment accounts. One advantage is that it would make managing your money together easier. Combined investments also mean fewer accounts and less fees. On the other hand, combined investments could be a source of friction. This is particularly true if both of you have strong differing opinions on how the money should be invested. For example, if you have a low tolerance for risk but your partner enjoys taking on more risky projects, this could be an issue and create a strain. Additionally, if you were to split up, you may disagree on how to divide your shared investment accounts. If you ultimately decide to keep your investments separate, remember that you will still be able to add one another as beneficiaries to your individual accounts. While your beneficiaries would not be able to contribute to these accounts, knowing they would have access to your funds should anything happen to you may provide you with a sense of security. Consult with an expert When making any sort of large decision around finances, it is crucial to consult with a professional. They will consider both yours and your partner’s needs and help you reach the best decision for your situation.

Secure your exchange rate in advance If you’re planning ahead and want to know exactly how much money transfers are going to cost you over the next 2 years, you can use a forward contract to buy your currency at a fixed rate now and pay later. By fixing your exchange rate in advance, you can minimise the risk of any currency movements. Simply buy your currency at a fixed rate, pay a small deposit, and the currency is held for you until you pay the balance in the future. Perfect if you’re paying a deposit on a property and have a balance to pay at a later date. Health

HOW TO REVERSE OR AVOID SERIOUS ILLNESS

I

As I write, spring is in the air. A time when we become more energised following the hibernation months of autumn and winter.

wonder if you are still able to take up sports like you used to when you were young? Can you run, hop, skip, and jump with your grandchildren? How is your golf swing, or your surfing skill going to be this year? Did you know that from the age of 30, and even more so in our 40s and 50s, our body chemistry can change significantly which results in declining health? I am sure you may have noticed that your friends, if not you personally, are showing signs of ageing, pain, mobility challenges or even full-blown illness or disease. Have you felt ill, been to see your doctor and told, after enduring many tests, that there is nothing wrong with you, yet are given a variety of prescriptions for medications to try? Has your GP suggested that because the medics and their testing has found nothing conclusive, that your problem is one of mental health? Have you, or your friends been given antidepressants or prescription painkillers as a sticking plaster to cement over the problem? My condolences if this describes your world. However, it needn’t stay like this. Prevention is better than cure! In my experience, and that of thousands of health practitioners worldwide, 99% of health challenges can be reversed when you know how. I speak from experience because I was born with a rare kidney condition that wasn’t detected until my early 20s, told my condition was incurable, and that I would be on medication (antibiotics) for life. I know about reversing serious disease because I’ve also experienced four different versions of cancer, including stage IV, which I reversed by ignoring the medical profession, following my intuition, and taking an integrated approach to changing my situation.

58

The kidney disease is called Medullary Sponge Kidneys where the tubes at the bottom of my organs were not functioning properly. This resulted in frequent bouts of projectile vomiting and/or urinary infections. As a competitive swimmer in my teens, often training twice daily, my body was subjected to the chemicals within the swimming pool environment which was thought to have been a potential cause. I was poked and prodded for years and misdiagnosed on many occasions by the medical profession. Stage IV cancer can be difficult to reverse, however it is possible with guidance, dedication and focus alongside the will to live and deep faith that you will recover. When I was told that I had less than one year to live in 2015, I set in motion my recovery strategy and gained the all clear in just 14 weeks. When you put in the work, the rewards are life changing – and in my case, lifesaving! How we contract disease is different for everyone. Every ‘body’ is different and there is no one size fits all recovery protocol. However, there is a simple strategy to follow which is guaranteed to have you feeling better and potentially to enable a full recovery. I show my clients how to do this for themselves through a bespoke programme that brings together the benefits of my many years of experience and training, plus referrals to my extensive health practitioner associate network of experts. Please don’t allow your body to get into this situation though. Prevention is far better than cure. It’s much easier to prevent illness than fix it! Serious illness doesn’t happen overnight. Your body is subjected to a variety of toxins on a daily basis which gradually breaks down the chemical balance to manifest illness over a period of years. And don’t think your regular health insurance or GP check is good enough because a tap on the knee, a listen to your lungs and heart,

poking in your ears, looking at your tongue and into your eyes just doesn’t cut it. This is old style medical training which has long since been abandoned by modern practitioners. As I write this article, I am reading the new book by Tony Robbins called Lifeforce. I highly recommend it if you’d like to know about some of the most amazing ways you can regenerate your body, although you do need a healthy bank balance to do so. Typically, in the past, my clients have been sent home to die, and get their affairs in order as the medics were unable to throw any more medication, treatment, or surgery at their body. ‘Thank goodness’ I’d say to them. Now you can begin your detox and recovery. Over the years, I have been privileged to support many beautiful people to recover their health and enjoy extra time with their families and a better quality of life, or even reverse their condition. Through lab testing which is undertaken by you at home, and two online assessments, we get to the root cause of the health challenge so that recovery can begin on an informed basis and a bespoke recovery plan set in place. One lady recently came to me after her GP gave her seven prescriptions and said their testing could find nothing wrong, yet she felt terrible. We identified the root causes for her situation within two weeks when I received her lab test results. If you’d like to know how I beat kidney disease in my 40s and stage IV cancer in 14 weeks in my 50s then feel free to arrange a 30 minute video call in which I will give you some free health tips and explain how you might avoid becoming ill https://bit.ly/121withelaine Elaine Godley MBA, O.A.Dip (Psych) is a multi-published author, nutritional advisor and online health mentor from the UK and living in Portugal elaine@discplus.health

WHAT IS MESOBOTOX BOTOX-LIKE A brand new and exciting treatment now available at Alegria Beauty Salon

M

esoBotox, Botox-Like is a cosmetic meso procedure that can reduce fine lines and wrinkles, resulting in smoother, younger looking skin. The technique can also shrink pores and reduce oil production and reduce facial sweating. This procedure is similar to Botox in that the client receives injections of botulinum toxin into the skin. However, Mesobotox, Botox-Like, uses a small amount of diluted Botox combined with hyaluronic acid. It is a fusion of hyaluron with botox serum and is funnelled by pressing 100 bar into the treated area and in a wider distribution over the face, usually in the T-zone, smileline and cheeks. Unlike traditional Botox treatments, Mesobotox is not injected, there are no needles, a machine disperses the MesoBotox into the area, into a deeper level of the skin or dermis, resulting in: instant smoothness of the face, smaller pores and reduces sweating. Mesobotox treatments are not permanent. The skin will gradually return to normal after 4 to 6 months, after which the treatments should be repeated if desired. The anti-wrinkle effect of MesoBotox, Botox-Like, delays the return of expression lines in the crow's feet area, t-zone, smile lines, and neck lines. MesoBotox stimulates the skin's natural regeneration and healing processes, it promotes the production of collagen, elastin and the products are better absorbed into the skin. The skin becomes smoother and firmer and takes on a fresher appearance. If you are interested in this treatment, or others, please feel free to contact me by email, WhatsApp or Facebook. Gardens

Snakes

ALIVE

Spring has sprung and so the gardening season has begun! For this edition we thought we would introduce the legless garden dwellers you may encounter while weeding and clearing brush that has accumulated over the winter months. Hopefully this article will put you at ease should you come in contact with them.

U

nlike most countries with a warmer climate, Portugal has very few snakes and they are quite harmless. The Algarve counts only 8 different species of snakes, of these, none are considered or classed as highly venomous.

60

Horseshoe Whip Snake, Coluber Hippocrepis, Cobra-de-Ferradura

Non-Venomous slender, shy and fast moving. They can reach a length of 180cm, however, they are usually smaller. Markings: Large black or brown spots uniformly placed along the dorsal line with smaller alternating spots along the flanks. The paler areas within the pattern are fine with a dark appearance, sometimes almost black. The belly is pale peach, yellow or orange with dark marks near the head and more dense near the tail. What they eat: Rodents, the largest being rats, occasionally lizards and small birds. Habitat: They live close to humans in cultivated areas and orchards, hunting around buildings or ruins and making use of dry stone walls. Generally ground dwelling, these snakes are also agile climbers going into bushes, vertical banks and dry stone walls searching crevices for prey. When disturbed: This snake will flee rapidly from humans, but if cornered and handled it will defend itself by hissing and biting.

Southern Smooth Snake, Coronella Girondica, Cobra-Lisa-Bordalesa

Docile and harmless to humans. Slow, secretive, slim, elegant, with a rounded body. Around 60cm long. Venomous, but back-fanged and unable to effectively bite humans. Markings: There is a dark strike from their neck to the rear corner of the eye. The eye has an orange/ red ring around a circular black pupil. The body colour can vary between grey/brown to ochre with darker bands or spots crossing the back in a non-uniform way. The underside is creamy or orangey yellow with a haphazard checked pattern of dark scales. What they eat: Small lizards and smaller snakes. It hunts at dusk and at night Habitat: Found in dry open scrub lands or rocky hillsides, hedgerows and open woods or around older cultivated trees.

Non - Venomous. The Ladder Snake has a pointed snout, is mediumsized, with a max length of 160cm and averaging 120cm. Markings: Laterally striped snake, only young snakes have the bold ladder pattern. The adult Ladder Snake has a shade of brown, from yellow to dark brown and with a pair of darker longitudinal stripes running down the length of the body from the neck to the tip of the tail. Often a dark stripe running backwards from the rear of the eye to the jaw and subtle, darker markings on the sides. The underside is silver-grey to whitish, sometimes with a few dark spots. The eye is dark brown to black. What they eat: Rodents, spiders, insects, and lizards. Being a fair climber it will seek out nests with chicks or eggs in trees or on walls. Habitat: Found in areas with plenty of bush cover, including vineyards, hedges and overgrown dry-stone walls. Sunny and stony habitats are preferred. When disturbed: It will hiss and lunge forward with an open mouth. It has a sharp bite if you pick it up and will empty the glands around the cloaca, the smell is quite offensive!

Montpellier Snake, Malpolon Monspessulanus, Cobra-Rateira

Harmless to humans, reaching up to 240cm, usually 200cm. A ground-dwelling snake, often seen slithering across roads in summer and frequently killed by vehicles. Although venomous, they are backfanged and unable to effectively bite humans. Markings: A narrow head with a very pronounced “eye-brow” over a large eye, sometimes accentuated by a white mark. The eye can sometimes appear orange/red. The colouration of the adults is usually a uniform grey, olive, greenish, blackish or red/brown. The belly is often a yellowish shade and blotched with dark markings. What they eat: Lizards, geckos, but also small birds, the chicks of ground nesting birds, rats, mice, small rabbits and other snakes. Habitat: Incredibly adaptable, from coastal sand dunes and saltmarshes to mountains. Their preference is for sandy or rocky open terrain with plant coverage and rock or log piles. When disturbed: Emits a loud and persistent hiss, they raise their heads, flatten out their neck and appear very aggressive. Receiving a venomous bite is unlikely, unless you are handling this snake as the fangs are at the very back of the top jaw. The venom can create symptoms that pass after a few hours including numbness, stiffness, swelling and possibly fever.
