The summer is upon us and so are nieces, nephews and granchildren. As a child who nearly drowned and as an adult who has sadly been touched by other drownings, I just felt compelled to encourage everyone to be vigilant this summer around any source of water and young children. Please be aware that the appeal of water makes the most sensible child forget the dangers. Drowning is fast and silent. Please take care. Dear East Algarve Magazine

We hired a villa in Cabanas for the third time this year, but this time it has been a new experience. The owners have stocked every copy of the East Algarve Magazine at the villa, and we have read them all. It has opened up the East Algarve region for us; we tried the Mesa da Cume, Beiras Rias, QM Gardens Centre, the Quinta at Fonte Bispo and we will work our way through as many as we can on this trip. Thank you for giving us an enjoyable read and an introduction to so many wonderful places. Stan and Mandy Dear East Algarve Magazine I find it very frustrating seeing adverts in magazines or newspapers when it is not made clear where the advertiser is located! If I’m looking for a builder plumber or electrician, I’d like to find one locally and not make a phone call only to find out that they are based in Lagos! Veronica, Cabanas Dear Veronica, We understand your frustration. This is one of the reasons we ensure that advertisers in this magazine are based in the East Algarve. Many advertisers produce their own adverts for us to publish, we cannot insist that they include their location, but you can be sure that they will be reasonably local.

I’m sure you’ve been inundated with complaints about the Tavira shopping centre car park. I personally wouldn’t risk my car’s paintwork again, so park outside and walk. I think the centre is already a little dated and was particularly disappointed in the food area compared to other centres. I was, however, very impressed with the cinema facility, clean and well priced. The only slight problem is the lack of information available online, so we took a gamble on it being open and if the films were in English. Luckily it paid off, the staff were friendly and helpful. It was just a shame that Harry Potter was such a let down... never mind. Danielle, Tavira Dear East Algarve Magazine

Dear East Algarve Magazine

I have enjoyed your magazine immensely, especially the gardening pages, they have been very informative. However, I have a problem with my pelargoniums, the leaves yellowed and mottled. Please could you ask the person/ persons who write the gardening articles, if they have any ideas as to how I may save my pelargoniums. Many thanks for a lovely publication, looking forward to next months edition, and hopefully a solution to my pelargonium problem. Sally Gliddon Dear Sally Thank you for your letter, it’s always nice to hear from readers, it makes the hard work all seem worth it! I have passed your question on to Mark, our gardening expert. Look out for an answer in the next issue. Dear East Algarve Magazine

Bloody good cause

There is a major shortage of hire cars this year with people receiving cancellations from hire car companies just days before their arrival and being left stranded in rural villas and not being able to make the most of their well earned holiday, with no transport, unable to visit the beach, shops restaurants etc. The shortage of cars will not be great news for the Algarve tourist industry, as it will inevitably put people off coming to the region. The problem has occurred due to the concentrated 5-week peak season and the current economic crisis, car hire companies have bought fewer cars, as they will sit unused for the rest of the year. On the brighter side though, taxi drivers are extremely busy! The problem should ease after August.

Emma and Mike Skinner hosted their final auction last month. Hanging up her hammer, Emma did inform us that a new couple will run the Tavira auction from September, and it will keep the exact same format. We would like to thank them for supporting the East Algarve magazine, and wish them all the best for future ventures.

Charity golf Faro Lions club will be holding their 4th charity golf tournament on the 8th of August at Benamor golf course. The tournament is in aid of the Obra Social Madre Teresa de Cultura, (special needs school), and Faro’s oncology unit. Benamor are donating their facilities for the cause. To learn more about the event call 918 702 795.

Hire cars in Algarve become gold dust!

Plans to build a 20 hectare industrial estate in Mesquita, a small village in São Brás has angered the locals, many of them are retired and moved there for the peace and tranquillity. Plans for the site include a car crushing industry and cork related businesses. The plans are at an advanced stage and apparently, the Camara is weighing up the environmental implications against the need to boost local economy and provide much needed work for the community. We will try to keep you informed on any further developments.

Anew, purpose built, mobile blood donor unit will start making its way from Vila real on the 3rd of this month, working its way across the Algarve coast. Giving blood takes only 30 minutes of your valuable time and is so worthwhile. It involves a blood pressure check and health questionnaire with a doctor before giving blood. Units open from 4pm until 9pm each day and residents or visitors are being encouraged to attend. Potential donors should be between 18 and 65 years of age and weigh a minimum of 50 kgs. For more details of the locations please call 282 417 295.

5Use discretion when judging if something in your wardrobe is dirty or not. Just wearing it once or if you simply pulled it out of the drawer doesn’t mean it’s dirty. This alone could cut your wash loads in half!

11Recycle - Recycle your glass, plastic, paper, card board and metal. No excuses!

10Place a lid on the sauce pans when cooking and save energy and money with ev ery meal.

There are many things you can do to live a greener lifestyle and often save money at the same time. Here are our top tips to a greener home.

Eastalgarve_Issue8.indd 7 3/8/09 13:27:47

6Fill your fridge! Food retains cold better than air does, so a full fridge works less to keep it cool than does one that is practi cally empty. 7Turn off all unnecessary light ing. When you leave a room, be sure to turn off the light (and other appliances). Install a motion sen sor on lights, especially in places where you only pass through, such as stairways, halls, etc.

9Use what’s outside to make the inside greener. Next time you have a light rain at your house, put your houseplants outside to give them a refreshing shower.

By running it with only full loads, you could save an estimated 100 pounds of carbon dioxide and not to mention a load of cash. 2Fix leaks! As soon as you spot a leak at your house, fix it or contact your plumber to do so. Leaky toilets can waste 30 to 50 gallons per day per toilet, and leaky taps can waste 15 to 20 gal lons per day. 3Don’t leave the water on while brushing your teeth. Did you know that running the water for three minutes while you are brushing your teeth can waste up to three gallons of water? 4Use reusable cleaning tools such as rags and natural brushes. This eliminates one-use wipes and cheap sponges. Save old towels and/or T-shirts, cut them into squares, and use them as cleaning rags.

How green is your home?

8Reduce phantom power. This is power used by appliances and other electronics that are plugged into the wall but not pow ered on. Cut down by unplugging your mobile phone, iPod, micro waves, and computers when not in use..

ABOVE: Mark, Clare and their 3 children

Mark and Clare’s journey literally started 5 years ago. A motorcycle cou rier for 24 years, Mark has always been a self confessed petrol head. After meeting his partner Clare, a trained architect in London, they decided to move to Bristol for a better family life. It became apparent that a more drastic move was in order, and ith the idea of starting a Quad bike tour business, Mark and lare took three months out, packed up their family, and travelled down to Portugal in a caravan. Driving down the Sil ver coast, then across to the Eastern Algarve looking for the ideal terrain for quad biking, the couple found themselves in the small town of Moncarapacho. It didn’t take long for them to decide that this was the area they’d been searching for. Clare fell in love with everything about the place; the people, weather, food and archi tecture. After some further search ing on the internet, it was Clare’s mother who found the house they would eventually buy in Goldra, Loule. Over a three year period starting in Nov ’06, they eventually moved to Portugal permanently in Aug ‘08 with their three children.

Rooster Algarve Quad Tours start ed soon after the move to Portu gal. Mark was very focussed on the type of service he wanted to offer. “It is important for me to give customers an unforgettable expe rience. I try to take each rider on their own merit and tailor their tour according to their ability”

I can verify that Mark ensures you really do get the most out of the tour. He was kind enough to take my cousin and me Quad biking out in the hills of Loulé. The day started with half an hour’s tuition (Mark is a fully qualified quad bike instruc tor), then we set off on a four hour adrenalin filled trip. The views were simply stunning. Any fears we had were quickly dispersed as he calmly advised us what to do. Be fore long we were speeding along tracks, across rivers and up hills. The two highlights for me were firstly riding down a steep rocky hill into a small river. I was taught how to let the engine do the breaking and to shift my weight accordingly. The sense of accomplishment was fantastic. We then continued rac ing along the trails until we came to a disused football pitch in the middle of absolutely nowhere! This was a great chance to ‘freestyle’ and of course, attempt the obliga tory donuts! The day ended with a drive up to the hills overlooking Faro (see the main pic). Both ex hilarated and exhausted, we re turned to Mark’s house for a well deserved, ice cold beer. It certainly was a day to remember. Mark offers a variety of tours for all levels. Beginners can enjoy the easier trails, whereas more expe rienced riders are offered a more challenging ride. You also have the choice of trips from half a day, up to a full three days. Now East Algarve residents needing air conditioning have a local representative, from a company making a name for itself…

info@eastalgarvemag.comPage 10

W ith bright yellow sig nage and vans bearing a cute cartoon logo, Penguin Air Condition ing has been catching the atten tion since opening for business a year ago. Fast following this recognition comes a solid reputation: this is a company that wants to be noticed - and delivers what it promises. “We set out our stall with a policy towards service“, says Chris Black burn, Penguin’s director, “and this has struck a chord in our favour. There are numerous air-con busi nesses in the Algarve but few seem motivated to offer a reliable, fastresponse maintenance service. So that‘s the gap we went for initially, and in doing so we develop trust worthy relationships with clients and pick up new installation work as and when it arises. Nowadays we‘re probably handling as many new installs as servicing jobs.”

Eastalgarve_Issue8.indd 10 3/8/09 13:28:17

With the summer heat wave has come a surge in demand for air conditioning services from swelter ing property owners, management agents and even hoteliers. “We’re so busy keeping people cool at the moment, our phones are red hot!“, quips HavingChris.moved from a hectic Lon don life to the Algarve with his wife four years ago, Chris - a for mer telecoms systems consultant - wasted no time putting his natu ral business acumen to good use. With strong branding and a com mitment towards service, Penguin was born, specialising not only in air conditioning but in year-round heating and renewable energy so lutions for the home - solar heat ing, underfloor and pool heating. “Penguin provides an Algarvewide service and a comprehensive range of products,” Chris explains. “We’re currently a team of eight, with over 30 years’ collective ex perience in our specialist fields.”

Turning to Penguin‘s solar energy services, he comments: “The new legislation regarding energy-rating for properties, coupled with the greater efficiency and cost-effec tiveness of today‘s technologies, is all combining to bring about an in creased demand for solar systems - ideal of course in the Algarve‘s year-round sunny climate.”

Overseeing a technical team of four, he brings unsurpassed ex pertise across the range of Pen guin’s products. Ensuring that all operations run smoothly is Office Manager, Patricia Nortista; whilst Penguin’s promotion and sales are managed by Tony Elwood, with over 10 years’ marketing experience in the Algarve. Penguin’s Account Manager is John Hogan. With a successful sales background all over the UK for much of his working life, John has now settled with his family in the São Brás area. “I joined Pen guin six months ago“ he explains, “as they share my ethos of qual ity products and a commitment to service. I love the East Algarve - its healthy environment, charm and culture - so I’m delighted to be working in the region, promot ing Penguin’s services. Although air conditioning is our mainstay - and we’re offering some excel lent summer discounts with Pan asonic and Mitsubishi right now - there’s also great interest in so lar heating for domestic water or pools. Penguin are now offering solar systems at substantially re duced prices, due to government grants which we obtain at source from suppliers and can pass the saving direct to clients. I‘ll be pleased to offer a free quote to any East Algarve Magazine read ers interested to know more.”

I will also endeavour to answer your questions about health re lated issues, using my contacts and knowledge. So if you have any questions, regarding your health, please contact Gareth via info@eastalgarvemag.com

Some of the questions and an swers may be printed but your names will always be removed to protect your innocence!!

What’s all the fuss about? Gareth Bullock introduces Europe’s fastest growing complimentary therapy, and also joins the East Algarve Magazine team, answering your health related questions.

The Bowen Technique is most ef fective when treating muscular and skeletal problems like back, neck and shoulder pain, whiplash, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow and other sporting injuries. But also with such problems as arthritis, asthma, hayfever, migraines, IBS, lymphatic drainage, stress and even fertility. It is excellent at cor recting uneven leg length, posture and balance, pain when sleeping and sciatica. The actual treatment involves very gentle moves made over specific points around the body. These stimulate the muscles, tendons, fa cia and pressure points within the body to start correcting any imbal ances you may have. The treat ment can be done through light clothing, in the privacy of a treat ment room and the practitioner uses varying pressure according to the client. Most importantly, no pain is felt. There are pauses after each move which allow the body time to absorb what is going on.

This will be informative and en tertaining. Each month we will introduce a different person and discover a new way to look af ter yourself. You never know, the right treatment for you may turn up via East Magazine Health pages. If you would like to be in terviewed and introduced via the magazine please contact Gareth via info@eastalgarvemag.com

The Bowen Technique

info@eastalgarvemag.comPage 12 Health

M ore and more people are turning to alternative and complimentary therapies as a way of addressing problems within their bodies. The Bowen Technique is Europe’s fast est growing complimentary thera py, which is why you are hearing so much about it Its amazing success is aiding people all over the world but does not cost the earth to have a treatment. Usually 3 or 4 ses sions are required and a session will cost €35 to €45 depending on location. Top up or maintenance treatments may be required.

Hello, I am Ga reth Bullock and I practice The Bowen Tech nique here in the East Algarve. I have been asked to contribute to the East Algarve Magazine Health pages every month and this is what I would like to do: educate, introduce and entertain. I would like to introduce as many health professionals and therapists on these pages. Be it Doctor, Alternative therapist, Complimentary therapist, Mas sage therapist, Hair therapist or whatever your line is. I will ask 20 quick fire questions in an in terview, that will give the readers an insight into you, your profes sion and what makes you tick!!

Eastalgarve_Issue8.indd 12 3/8/09 13:30:15

The body will ‘make well’ the con dition if physically possible. Sleep becomes easier and the body re turns to being all good.

If all the moves were made in one go, it would be like pressing all the buttons on your computer at once, causing it to crash. The body re sponds best to gentle, slow mes sages in any situation. Less, in the case of Bowen, is definitely more.

The Bowen Technique is very re laxing and encourages the body to start a healing process which can last for several days. Most people feel an immediate effect and dur ing the week between treatments experience pain free days, as the body begins its healing process.

Gareth Bullock is fully qualified to an advanced level and works from several clinics in Central and East Algarve, home visits can also be arranged. For further details please call Tlm. 912 540 071.

beaches, protected by lifeguards, with bars and a restaurant nearby, and offer ing visitors the possibility of rent ing sunshades, awnings or canvas beach huts and toilet facilities. All have showers and provide easy access for the disabled, as well water sports equipment for rent. To get to Barril, walk across the narrow pontoon bridge, and take the train that runs for roughly a ki lometre through the marshland of Ria Formosa. On the beach is a bathing complex with a bar, res taurant and children’s playground, ensuring all kinds of entertainment for visitors. Isolation is only a short distance in either direction. The excellent beach of the Ilha de Tavira is ideal for families that enjoy camping; everything can be hired. The endless beach, the calm, clear water and the good bathing facilities meet all the family’s re quirements. Tavira Island or Praia Ilha de Tavira can be reached via a short ferry journey from town in the peak season or from the 4 aguas port. There are some lovely walks through the sand dunes. The beach is 11km long by 500m wide, has soft golden sand, is very child friendly and provides excellent swimming. There are also plenty of restaurants on the island. If you’re feeling very daring, there’s even a ‘reserved’ section for naturists. The famous calm, warm seawater with children’s playgrounds at the beach of Manta Rota is an attrac tive feature that offers the chance to enjoy oneself on the beach in an atmosphere of complete safety. Great parking facilities allow you to drive right up to the beach. Further along the coast is Monte Gordo, which provides all the traditional beach attractions, but can become very busy in July and August. A luxury place to eat, excellent ser vice but not cheap is Praia Verde, with parking close to the beach and a short walk to Monte Gordo or Manta Rota. Also within walking distance from Manta Rota is Altura, a children’s delight with a lovely restaurant on the beach, good ser vice, excellent food, great prices. Children can play in the sand, there is a football/volleyball pitch and the usual pedal boats for hire. The nature reserve is situated between the road and the quiet beach at Vila Real Sto. António Right in the corner where the land ends, you will find most beautiful and special shells, especially after heavy wind or in winter. No cafes, restaurants or water sports, heav en for some. For those who do crave peace and privacy there is Fabrica, a lit tle, private, almost hidden, beach reached by boat from the village of Fabrica, close to Cacela Velha and the lovely restaurant at the Ria AFormosa.personal favourite is Fuseta beach, generally quiet most of the year with a couple of fishermen to watch. No watersports. A friendly beach close to the town, park ing close to the beach. There is a small popular café on the beach and more within walking distance. Lots to see with all the fishing boats passing by and water taxis to ferry people over to the island. Last but by no means least is Praia da Armona beach, which usually requires a ferry journey from Ol hão of about a half-hour’s dura tion. It’s convenient enough to get there and back though, because the ferry service is pretty frequent and the journey’s not long enough to require ‘sea legs’. Safety Notes: Currents: Algarve beaches give onto the Atlantic Ocean; they’re not Mediterranean beaches. Some beaches, espe cially on the west coast, can expe rience dangerous sea conditions. One of these conditions that should concern even strong swimmers is that of a ‘rip’. Another term for un dertow, a rip current is caused by strong wave conditions and can be

Rips are the effect of below-surface water rushing back out to sea and can reach speeds of up to 3 miles per hour (around 5 kph). Although recognisable to experienced sea watchers, they can go unnoticed by the average beach user. If caught in a rip, the received wisdom is: try not to panic. Most people killed by a rip current died because they tired from strug gling against it and couldn’t keep their heads above water. The current will lose strength as the seabed contour changes, and it will release you. Rip currents are rarely wider than 10 metres. Once you’re free of the current, you should swim for a while par allel to the shore (away from the dangerous current) and then try to get back to the beach. If pos sible, attract attention and get Thisassistance.information was gleaned from a number of sources, espe cially that of the North Carolina Sea Grant Rip Current Safety Campaign. Please try to bear it in mind when you step into the Atlantic waters. Lifeguards: After the end of Sep tember, it’s rare in Portugal that lifeguards are present on beach es. There may not even be safe ty flags to guide you, since the swimming season is regarded as being over. Ask locally about sea conditions (surfers are usually knowledgeable) and swim with caution.

In the town centre stands an obe lisk, a vertical symbol of the power of a King and his prime minister. The streets are arranged on a grid pattern, as stiff and straight as sol diers on parade, leading off from a broad, open square. The façades of the houses repeat the balanced forms of a sober and restrained ar chitectural style. Vila Real de Santo António is a perfect example of ide als of The Enlightenment of the 18th century put into practice. The town’s formality contrasts with the gentle landscapes along the banks of the Guardiana where, here and there, esplanades provide oases of cool and welcome relief from the heat of the sun. Vila Real de Santo António’s origins can be traced back to a specific date - December 30, 1773 - the day on which the Royal Charter found ing the town was signed. The town was built quickly- the contingencies of policy towards Spain and the iron will of the Marquis of Pombal, prime minister of King José I (1714-1777) meant that it had to be. The task of marking out the street plan was started on March 2, 1774 and by Au gust 6 the Town Hall, the Customs House and the barracks had already been completed, and the church was in its early stages. The end of the 19th century and the decades that followed were a time of prosperity for Vila Real de Santo António. The presence of sardines and tuna in the waters off the Al garve coast turned the town into a major canning centre, while its port was much frequented by the ships that sailed up the Guardiana to load the ore from the mines at São Do mingos. One indication of the dyna mism and wealth of the town at this stage is that it was the first place in the Algarve to have gas lighting in 1886. The municipality’s history does not however begin with the founda tion of Vila Real de Santo António. This part of the coast has been in habited since ancient times, as can be seen from the dolmen and tholos - a beehive shaped tomb - in Nora near Cacela. Under the Romans and later the Moors, Cacela became an important town. After its castle was captured by Paio Peres Correia, master of the Order of Santiago in 1240, Cacela was the jumping -off point of the reconquest of the whole of the Today,Algarve.VilaReal de Santo António and its municipality have in the tour ist trade that has grown up around its magnificent beaches, fishing ag

The experience gained in rebuilding Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake was put to good use in Vila Real de Santo António. Firstly in the careful planning of the urban structure, a task made easier by the flat lie of the land. Then in the use of rigid archi tectural modules. Lastly the prefab rication of standardized building ma terials, such as stone blocks, which were brought by boat from Lisbon, cut and dressed ready to be put into place immediately on arrival.

PLACES TO SEE Main Church Built in the 18th century this church has since suffered fire damage on a number of occasions. In the side chapels there are retables in the “ro caille “ style. The church contains a fine collection of 18th century stat ues, most notable among which is a Nossa Senhora da Encarnção or Our Lady of the Incarnation by the sculptor Machado de Castro. The stained glass windows in the main chapel and the baptistery, which were installed in the 1940’s, are from the Algarvean artist, Joaquim Rebo cho.

riculture and commerce the main stays of an economy that is expand ing and diversifying How did Vila Real de Santo An tónio come to be built? In the 16th century a town called Vila de Santo António de Arenilha stood near the site of the present town, though most probably nearer to the sea. By the 18th century it had disappeared, swallowed up by the waves and the shifting sands. There remained a need, however, to con trol the arrival of merchandise via the Guadiana, to keep the fisheries of Monte Gordo under royal super vision and to present a firm face to Spain, with whom a war had been fought in 1762/1763. More than an act of pure royal will, the construc tion of Vila Real de Santo António was inspired by pressing economic and political motives. How to build a town in 5 months!

o you remember only thirty years ago, when the only means of communicating with people or businesses, was by expensive telephone or by letter? Or when businesses had to post, courier or fax documents around the country? Or when your only means of finding information was the library? The Internet has revolutionized the world in which we live. It is at once a world-wide broadcasting capability, a mecha nism for information dissemination, and a medium for collaboration and interaction between individuals and their computers without regard for geographic location, and it is hard even now, to imagine life without it. The Internet was conceived in the 1960s as a tool to link university and government research centers via a nationwide network that would al low a wide variety of computers to exchange information and share re sources. In 1969 the Advanced Re search Projects Agency (ARPA) of the United States Defense Depart ment began a network called AR PANET. This research programme investigated techniques and tech nologies for interlinking packet networks of various kinds. Packet switching takes large messages (or chunks of computer data) and breaks them into smaller, manage able pieces (known as packets) that could travel independently over any available circuit to the target desti nation, where the pieces would be Itreassembled.wasacollaboration of effort. Tim Berners-Lee, working for the re search organization –CERN, ad dressed the issue of the constant change in the currency of informa tion and the turn-over of people on projects. Berners-Lee proposed a hypertext system, utilizing HTML ( Hypertext Mark Up Language) that would run across the Internet. Hy pertext is text that contains links to other texts. The system can include other media such as graphics, im ages, video and sound. Thus, the World Wide Web was created. What eventually grew out of all of these endeavours was a miracu lously low cost technology that has swiftly and dramatically changed the world we live in and the way we do things. It connects people around the globe instantaneously. It allows people to find and book a cheap flight (having compared prices of all airlines), or to book a restaurant (hav ing first checked its menu for that day), or to book a hotel online in sec onds, or to organize a golf lesson in Portugal, when you are on holiday. It has allowed the world to know what is going on in other countries and has marshalled support for human rights, and other important causes. Through its transparency and ac cess to information, it is a huge force for change and improvement in our society, but it equally comes at a cost, when the system is abused. It is a well known secret among estate agents that the majority of people making an inquiry about purchasing a property during the summer months are not (financially) able to make a purchase. No doubt they love the Algarve and no one questions their desire to own a property here. Portuguese banks have been more conservative regarding mortgages e.g. more like 70 to 80% of LTV where in Spain 110% mortgage financing more or less became the norm. The price correction in the Algarve should therefore be less severe but without doubt still Manypainful. people have been considering buying a property but until now have been reticent to do so, even in the current downturn. Some have waited for more than four years for prices to come down either because the property they were looking for was beyond their means or they simply felt prices were too high. Not taking advantage of this window of opportunity to purchase deeply

Robert Bijker suggests an alternative to taking the plunge and buying a prop erty if you have any doubts or financial concerns... ‘test drive’ your next home! With the summer in full swing, there is a good chance you are reading this article while enjoying life on the beach with your beloved ones. It is the ideal scenery to let your mind drift away while having your favourite drink and picture your self having a dream like lifestyle in the Algarve on a permanent basis. Away from the daily chores, stress and gloom back home.

Fast Food - Takeaways: Pizza chains have enjoyed a large jump in profits and eye expansion. Papa John’s plans to bring a motorbike rider carrying pizzas to a town near you soon. Repaying Mortgage Debt: Roughly 60,000 mortgages were approved each month during the boom years. Now, Britons can’t get rid of it fast enough.

Domestic Economics: Sewing machines are flying off the shelves as people choose to repair their clothes. Shoes that would previously have been binned are also enjoying a stay of execution. Shoe repair specialists Timpson enjoyed a record week in October.

Part-time Employment: Lengthening dole queues are changing the labour market in less obvious ways; part-time working, for example, has exploded. Almost a million people are back at work part-time.

Homeowners repaid a record £8.1bn of mortgage debt in the first three months of the year, and many expect that number to keep rising.

Home Cooking: Discount food retailers Aldi and Lidl have had a great recession as people look to cut back

LOOK WHO’S BEATING THE DOWNTURN: Public Transport: Bus operators have seen sales jump almost 10% in recent months.

E conomic output shrank by 5.6% in the 12 months to the middle of the year, according to official figures, shattering hopes that the recovery has already begun. The Office for National Statistics said that Britain’s gross domestic product (GDP) contracted by 0.8% in the second quarter, following the unprecedented 2.4% fall in the first three months of the year. Economists had expected GDP – the broadest measure of the country’s economic performance – to shrink by 0.3%. But it’s not all gloom and doom!

But Britons have also turned to making more of the foods they would previously have bought. Sales of jam making equipment, for example, have soared as people try to make most of this summer’s bumper crop of fruit. Holidays at Home: More Britons are taking their holidays at home. 1.6 million fewer people travelled from Britain in April - the latest month for which figures are available, giving the UK economy a boost.

Voucher codes: Online “voucher codes” - special code numbers published by online stores that shoppers can type in to receive a discount - have soared in popularity since the recession struck. Sales, sales and more sales: Getting Britain’s once free and easy shoppers to part with their cash is getting ever tougher. So ‘sales’ signs have become a permanent feature on the high street as retailers resort to deep discounts. Turning to religion: It’s certainly a bet the music industry has made. Gregorian chants have, according to music executives, soared in popularity as people seek solace amid the gloom. For the full article see: finance/financetopics/recessionhttp://www.telegraph.co.uk/

4 Remove a section of pipe, leaving a gap large enough to slide on a compression tee. 5 Slip the tee over each end of the pipe. 6 Tighten the compression nuts. The rubber gasket will compress against the pipe, creating a seal to prevent leakage. 7 Install a short nipple, using PTFE tape on all threaded connections to the tee.

I n this second part we give you the basic information for you to install and check your irrigation system, as mentioned in last month’s issue I will be using Toro irrigation products for the installation which are readily available.

The final plan for your system should include the connection to the mains water supply and the location of the timer and valves, remembering that the timer and valves, if you need more than one zone, can be placed in the same box, if using a 9 volt timer and solenoids, therefore making the need to run wires in trenches unnecessary. When laying out your irrigation lines, observe the following guidelines:

8 Attach a shut-off valve, in a small enclosure, to this section of pipe. The shut-off valve allows you to turn off the system by hand, if necessary. 9 Keep this connection as clean as possible. MAIN AND LATERAL LINE TRENCHING The main irrigation line is the pipe that runs from your service line to your valve manifolds. The lateral lines are the lines that run from the valve manifolds to the sprinkler heads. Trenching by hand: To soften the soil, water the ground approximately two days before you dig. Dig trenches 20cm to D.I.Y. part 2 Installation! The final steps to your own irrigation system MAPPING OUT YOUR PLAN IN THE GARDEN Use flags to indicate sprinkler locations according to your design Also, mark the location of your drip system risers Even if you plan to install the actual drip system at a later date, you can install your drip risers with the rest of your system Use line-marking spray paint to mark where you’ll trench for pipes and wiring Check your worksheet to make sure you mark the lines accurately You will be digging your trenches along these lines da Liberdade n.º 126 289 798

Remember to refer to your planning worksheet. 1 Placing a sprinkler in a trench as a guide, measure from the connecting pipe fitting to the bottom of the sprinkler and cut a length of Funny Pipe to fit. Place sprinklers at least 7.5cm from sidewalks and curbs and 15cm from fences and buildings. 2 Install the appropriate Funny Pipe elbow into the sprinkler and into the PVC or poly pipe fitting. No glue or clamps needed. 3 Connect the Funny Pipe to the sprinkler and to the pipe Note:fitting. Do not use more than 1m of Toro Funny Pipe with each sprinkler head. 4 Position the sprinkler in the trench so that the top of the sprinkler is flush with ground level. Stabilize the sprinkler with soil without filling the entire trench. 5 Verify that the sprinkler is vertical for optimum performance. 6 Repeat this process for each sprinkler. valves one zone at a time and flush until the water runs clear. Seal the fitting with duct tape to keep dirt out until the sprinklers are installed. Note: Don’t backfill your trenches until your final system operation check is complete.

IN-LINE VALVE INSTALLATION

b, Turn off any water being used in the house (washers, showers, faucets, etc.).

e, When you see that the coverage is satisfactory, fill in the trench. That’s it! Your properly installed, automatic irrigation system will help keep your landscape green and healthy for years of recreation and enjoyment.

c, Take the other wire from each valve and connect them to the timer terminals in sequence.

Eastalgarve_Issue8.indd 32 3/8/09 13:41:25

LAYING THE MAIN PIPE Attach the main sprinkler line to the service line Run it along the bottom of the trench from the house to the first set of valves, and if required, to the second set.

INSTALLING YOUR TIMER As mentioned earlier the best option is to use a 9 volt timer with 9 volt solenoids on the valves, meaning all these components can be placed in the same box, making the need to run any cables for your system unnecessary. Connect the valves to the timer using the valve wires.

CHECKING YOUR SYSTEMS OPERATION

In-line valves are installed below ground and should always be installed in a protective valve box. Dig out the area where in ground valves are to be installed, and add several centimeters of gravel to the bottom of the hole. Place the top of the valve box so that it is even with the surface of the ground. When you buy a valve box, be sure to find out how many valves fit in each box so you know how many to buy. In some cases, you will need more than one valve box per manifold. Note: If one of the valves will be used for drip irrigation, leave enough room between the valve and the sides of the valve box for the filter and pressure regulator that are part of your drip system. It may be a good idea to install those parts on the valve, then, install the valve in the valve box.

c, Fine-tune sprinkler spray positions and spray patterns to match your coverage area.

b, At the timer, connect the common wire to the common terminal on the timer.

d. If coverage is still not complete, go back and check your system layout against the plans.

LAYING THE LATERAL PIPES Start from the valves and move outwards, laying the connecting pipe along the bottom of the trench. At each flag, install a tee or elbow fitting, and if needed, a riser for sprinkler attachment. I recommend that you use Toro Funny Pipe for all your sprinkler head installations, which gives you the flexibility to adjust the sprinklers ensuring they are level with the soil.

1 Slowly turn on the water, then manually open an irrigation valve. 2 Adjust the sprinklers to ensure proper coverage. 3 If you don’t have complete head-to-head coverage, follow the steps below: a, Make sure the control valve and shut-off valve are fully open.

a, Take one wire from each valve and connect them to a common wire. (For ease of identification, use the white wire as the common.)

Hybrids also have an electric motor that is powered by a rechargeable Thebattery.petrol engine works together with the electric motor to: • Increase the speed / acceleration of the car • Apply resistance to the brakes to slow down and stop the car • Provide extra power to the motor to go up a hill • Reduce the amount of drag on the tires • Automatically shut off when the car is idle and automatically start when the accelerator is pushed Job Scene Car manufacturer Nissan said it will invest almost $700 million in two plants to make batteries for electric cars in Britain and Portugal after securing financial support from their governments. “The two governments (UK and Portugal) have offered to extend financial assistance and other support to ensure that Nissan locates the proposed plants within their respective countries,” Nissan said in a statement. The location for the 250 million euro ($354 million) Nissan plant in Portugal, which should create 200 jobs, is yet to be chosen and is planned to produce 60,000 batteries a year. An announcement is expected later this year.

• Hybrids have low-rolling resistance tyres that help reduce drag. AND THE DRAWBACKS? One of the major drawbacks of electric cars is the lack of national recharging networks. Run out of juice on a journey and most locals will be loathe to let you plug into their mains – especially with energy prices so high. But now Renault and Nissan have announced that Portugal will have a nationwide electric car recharging network built in the next three years. Portugal has struck a deal with the Renault-Nissan Alliance to explore zero-emissions mobility. The country will install 1300 vehicle charging points by the end of 2011 and offer tax incentives to individuals and businesses buying electric vehicles. From 2011, the Portuguese government has pledged a fifth of public fleet vehicles must be zero-emissions. 34 info@eastalgarvemag.com

• Less wear and tear on the engine, so fewer trips to the car shop.

What is a hybrid car? Hybrid vehicles, also known as hybrid electric cars, combine a fuel-efficient petrol engine with an electric motor powered by batteries, allowing the hybrid car to travel further distances using the same amount of petrol as a traditional car. How does a hybrid car work? A hybrid car has the same petrol engine as a traditional car, only it’s made much smaller and efficient.

Edited from reports by Kate Kelland & Simon Stiel

• Hybrids are more lightweight than the average car, thus increasing their speed and performance.

There are many reasons why a hybrid card is better than a traditional car:

Environment Hybrid Cars –plug and play!

T he average mid-size car gets about 27 miles per gallon, and the average SUV gets about 15 miles per gallon. This makes the hybrid vehicle, which can get up to 60 miles per gallon for a car and from 35-45 miles per gallon for a hybrid SUV an attractive proposition. Hybrid cars also benefit from reduced road tax.

Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates said, during a signing ceremony in Lisbon, that Nissan’s decision to build the plant in Portugal “will lead to other investments in electric car projects in Portugal by other car manufacturers.” He said the government plans to boost electric car sales by offering an incentive of up to 6,500 euros to buyers, making it compulsory for new buildings to have charging points and replacing 20 percent of cars in local government fleets with electric ones by 2011.

Explaining the new technology that saves you money and brings jobs to Portugal and the UK, courtesy of Nissan

• Smaller engines produce less air pollution.

• There is reduced wear on brakes because of the automatic brake system.

• The battery acts as a back-up energy source for the electric motor.

Eastalgarve_Issue8.indd 34 3/8/09 13:42:00

• The electric motor produces less roadway noise.

Page

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF HAVING A HYBRID VEHICLE?

• You save money with less fuel consumption.

• Many insurance providers offer reduced rates because hybrid owners are seen as more responsible.

• Tax and toll incentives.

Very few golfers with a medium to high handicap can carry a ball 200 metres. I recommend you play an iron (4 or 5) from the tee, which should put you 20 to 25 metres short of the ditch, and leave you 120 metres away from the green. From here a 7 or 8 iron should give you 2 putts for par. Remember, leave the driver in the bag, hole 13 is unlucky for some! Keith Ashdown, P.G.A. ResidentBenamorprofessional, golf

Exciting times for Olhanense Work on the €900,000 refurbishment of the José Arcanjo Stadium, Olhão, continues around the clock. Floodlights, hospitality boxes, new & additional seating with increased capacity, large replay screen and re-alignment of the pitch are all on schedule for the first home game on the 23rd August against U.Leiria. The Portuguese League of Professional Football has announced a €3 million modernization programme of stadiums and technological equipment covering sixteen professional clubs. Olhanense are the main beneficiary, receiving €171,000 in the initial distribution of €864,000. The Algarveans have unveiled their exciting young squad. In the beautiful and tranquil surroundings of the Colina Verde Aparthotel & Golf complex at Maragota near Moncarapacho, former Porto legend Jorge Costa, at 37, the youngest manager in Liga Sagres, and his players were introduced to the nation’s press. New signings, goal keeper Ventura (FC Porto), defenders Carlos Fernandez (Maritimo), Sandro (Leixões), Miguel Garcia (Sporting), Tengarrinha (Amadora); and forwards Rabiola (FC Porto), Gomis (Shinnik, Russia) & former Portugal Under 20 international Zequinha (Gil Vicente) will be challenging for places alongside Olhanense’s championship stars which include Ukra & Castro, who represented Portugal at Under 21 level last season. Jorge Costa, when asked about his young team, 15 players are under the age of 23, said, “When you have quality it does not matter how old you are, and we certainly have quality Leaguehere.”

The most physically demanding sporting event in the world, the Tour de France, started in Monaco on the 4th July. Three weeks later after a gruelling 3500kms the first man to cross the finishing line in the Champs Elysees was the ’Manx Missile’ 24 year old sprint champion Mark Cavendish. He became the first Briton to win the final stage in the Tour’s 96 year history & his 6th stage win in this Tour was his ninth overall to beat Barry Hoban’s 34-year record of eight stage wins by a British rider. Overall race victor was 26 year old Alberto Contador who won the 35th Volta ao Algarve back in February which passed through Vila Real San Antonio, Castro Marim, Malhao (Loule) & Tavira.

A 92nd minute goal from defender Miguel Vitor enabled Benfica to clinch the 9th Annual Guadiana International Tournament Trophy at Vila Real de Santo Antonio recently. In the semi-finals Benfica came from behind to beat Athletico Bilbao whilst the young Olhanense side beat Anderlecht. A stunning goal from Zequinha shortly after half-time gave the Olhão side the lead, Biglia levelled for the Belgium side, before lively Fabio slotted home the winner to set-up a dream final against Benfica. The 6000 spectators who packed into the Municipal Stadium for the final were treated to a game of quality in which Olhanense were the equals of their illustrious opponents. Ukra opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 60th minute but almost immediately Benfica drew level when Cardozo made amends for an earlier penalty miss when he beat Ventura from the edge of the box.
