WOMEN’S LIBERATION MOVEMENT – GOOD NEWS OR TAX MULE?

With International Women's day approaching, Elaine Godley gives us a brief history about the organisation

The feminist movement has undergone many transitions in both Eastern and Western society dating as far back as 615bc when the ancient Greek female poet Soppho wrote about sexuality. Rumour has it that women were encouraged to go to work because only half the population were taxed. Significant tax revenue was generated not just from the working women, but also from a necessary new industry – childcare which generated jobs and even more tax revenue. Gloria Steinem a leading US journalist, feminist and activist, co-founded Ms magazine in 1972, specifically to encourage young women to follow the trend to become independent. In April 1993, the first “Take Your Daughter to Work Day” was celebrated. Launched by Steinem and other feminine activists, ten years later, the organisation extended the idea to include all genders. The original concept was created to support young women to raise self-esteem in the workplace and life generally. This year, young people will invade the workplace on April 28th 2022. The pressure on women to work in the modern world is phenomenal. Society puts great demands on women to be superhuman hot-deskers with multiple roles as a mother; career woman; wife; homemaker; housekeeper and all-round good egg. No wonder so many women suffer with mental health issues. The next International Women’s Day is March 8th 2022. I wonder what Soppho would make of this celebration and whether she would agree or disagree on the equality/glass ceiling debate?
