We meet Pedro Teixeira, a 30 year old barber in Fuseta, originally from Guimaraes, but grew up in Felgueiras, Porto. He moved to the Algarve after visiting his brother who lives here, during that time he visited the studio to have his hair cut. He loved the style and the whole experience, so asked his barber about the possibility of learning from him as an apprentice. After some persuading, he eventually agreed. Pedro grabbed the opportunity with both hands and moved to the Algarve. Pedro spent 7 years working for the military during which time he used to cut his comrades hair, this is where he initially gained his interest for cutting hair and his passion grew from there. He only officially started working as a barber in December 2022. After his military service, he stepped into the world of private security and at the same time also competed as a bodybuilder in Men's Physique on a National and International level. Currently he still works as a private security guard, but has reduced his hours and is dedicating most of his time to being a barber. This decision came naturally as the passion for cutting hair grew. Pedro says "I greatly appreciate the relationships created with my clients, its a very rewarding job. The time spent so close to the client enables you to, over time, become friends and not just clients. I'm quite a perfectionist, I’ve always been this way, but competing in bodybuilding shows you the full potential of the human body and the extreme detail in presenting yourself perfectly. I take this drive for perfection into my job as a barber in hopes to give my clients an enjoyable experience and surprise them with the quality of the outcome". His apprenticeship is under his 'mentor' Andre Cordeiro, who is considered the best barber when it comes to “Fades” in the Algarve. Andre is training Pedro to produce the same very high standard. Asked about his motivation, Pedro says "My motivation comes from a few different avenues, of course I have a drive to create a fruitful career in this business, which is one of them, but a large part of my motivation has also come from people who doubted me and put pressure on me not to go into this industry by saying that I wouldn’t make money working as a barber. In such a small amount of time I am already proving them wrong. I have proved myself and shown that I am capable of being a successful barber, something I enjoy doing, a gratifying job particularly as being barbers, we have a new experience with every client, a new challenge. It’s not a monotonous job, there’s a lot of diversity and when you enjoy what you do you never really work a day in your life". Pedro's goal as a barber is to challenge other professionals in the area by bringing a high quality standard of work, but his main focus is to make sure that every client walks out the door happy with the experience and with the end result. He is extremely proud of his work, and very grateful to his team: mentor Andre Cordeiro, Tiago Marques and Ivan Barbosa and also to his clients who 'put their trust in me to deliver a fresh look every time they sit in my chair'. It was a real pleasure to meet Pedro, and we wish him great success in his new career.
