Richard Hudson and Eddie Charnock, Algarve Golf Guru, PGA Professionals discuss ‘Do you need to wear a glove to play golf?’

F

ollowing on from our previous articles in Simply Algarve where we covered the golf swing, we would like to continue by discussing the importance of wearing a Golf Glove. Wearing a golf glove is not a requirement, but we recommend you do!

• A golf glove helps the golfer maintain a secure hold on the golf club. This is true when the golfer is sweating, or when the grips on your golf clubs are wet (or maybe need changing!).

• Golf gloves help the golfer to keep a good grip on the golf club which reduces tension in the hands, wrists and forearms — tension is bad in golf!

• Nearly all top golfers wear a glove on one hand, the lead hand (right handers on the left hand, left handers on the right hand), a small number don’t wear gloves at all and a smaller number wear gloves on both hands.

still being comfortable and not restricting your hand movements. A golf glove that is too large offers you no feel, defeating the purpose of wearing one in the first place.

Do you wear the Golf Glove for all shots? If you do decide to wear a glove based on what we have said, should you wear it for every shot during your round? Our advice is no! Professional Golfers wear the glove only on swings with woods, hybrids, irons and wedges. When they reach the green, the glove comes off. Putting is such a feel stroke, that having that tactile sensation of no glove, provides more feedback on your putt.
