We are absolutely thrilled to announce that our wonderful Jen won Charity Staff Member of the Year at the Association of Air Ambulance Awards on Monday 12th November. Jen has become an inspiration to everyone at EAAA since she started working here 15 years ago after her daughter sadly passed away. A tragic incident that we attended. She is the backbone of the charity and is a daily reminder to all of us as to why we are here.

T

his year we have reviewed the kit bags that our crew take to scene to treat our patients. Our doctors and

critical care paramedics (CCPs) need to be physically fit to do this job because the range of equipment they have to carry to and from scene is extensive and can be heavy. Our previous kit bags weighed around 18kg each - to put it into perspective that is nearly the weight of two carry on suitcases. Reviewing the bags means that we have managed to get the weight of each bag down to around 15kg, which is much easier for the doctors and CCPs to manage. Not only is it better for their wellbeing but it means that we are carrying the most vital and useful equipment that is now much more accessible and ensures we are treating patients in the most effective way possible. We carry exactly the same kit on our helicopters and rapid response vehicles and across both Norwich and Cambridge bases. Our crew carry two main bags – a red one and a blue one and a Zoll X Series monitor. Depending on the nature of the job, they may decide to take the Oxylog 3000 Plus Ventilator, a chest trauma bag or the two RePHILL blood boxes. 8

The bags include: Blue bag – contains airway, breathing and circulation equipment as well as basic surgical equipment and cardiac drugs. Red bag – equipment additional to what the ambulance service provide, including a blood testing machine and an ultrasound scanner (£6,400 each). Further drugs to treat more complex medical emergencies are carried, along with a device that can measure blood pressure in real time directly from the artery.

small, fragile lungs of new-born or young patients. The ventilator allows our critical care team to take over a patient’s breathing and deliver specialist support throughout a transfer to hospital. We adapted the helicopter interior to carry the ventilator and our doctors and CCPs underwent training prior to the babyPAC being introduced. Pneupac babyPAC ventilators cost £5,500 each.

Zoll X Series monitor (£34,000 each) – Provides recordings of heart rate, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, and invasive arterial blood pressure monitoring. It also carries a temperature probe to measure core temperature. Oxylog 3000 Plus ventilator – when patients are anaesthetised we can breathe for them and adjust the ventilator according to what they need. Chest trauma bag – this contains over 10 different items of sterile surgical equipment allowing the crew to safely and effectively perform open heart surgery in certain types of chest injury. RePHILL blood boxes – as part of the RePHILL trial we carry two sealed bags that could either carry blood products or saline to be administered to patients who have life-threatening bleeding.

WHAT DOES EAAA MEAN TO YOU? In September 2003 Carl Atkins was knocked off his motorbike and run over by a bus in Old Buckenham, leaving him seriously injured. EAAA was tasked to attend the scene by helicopter, where they found Carl with horrific injuries. After initial treatment on scene he was then flown to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. Carl had sustained many injuries, including; a fractured neck and spine, broken jaw and arm, a lacerated kidney and had also suffered a pneumothorax (collapsed lung). Despite the terrible injuries he sustained and a long rehabilitation journey, Carl made a full recovery, and says that the crew aboard EAAA were responsible for saving his life with their fast and efficient actions.

Carl has seen first-hand the work that we do, and has chosen to leave a gift to EAAA in his will in the hope that this could help someone just like him.

“Wills are often not really talked about but I am proud to know that I have left something behind that my children might benefit from. You’re not leaving a gift for yourself, you are leaving it for a community.”- Carl Atkins, EAAA patient We love to hear from our supporters and find out what connects them to East Anglian Air Ambulance. If you would like to share what EAAA means to you or find out how you could leave a gift in your will just like Carl has, please see the enclosed legacy postcard.

Jean is a very smart and alert lady and is as sharp as a pin. When I asked her what she would do with the money, she said in hushed tones "I shall spend it wisely!”

Colin and Shirley Aldous Owners of Ufford Park Woodbridge Hotel, winners of the Summer Raffle, tell us why they support EAAA;

In January 2003 we were discussing the proposed charity that we wished to support for Colin’s impending Captains year at Ufford Park’s golf club. In our opinion, a need for a helicopter supported ambulance service was paramount. We made the decision that we would support the (then) new EAAA and have continued to do so both personally and commercially to this day. Having retired from the hotel operations our daughter Tarnia Robertson, now M.D, has continued to support this worthy cause among her chosen charities. Our donations are made up from many sources including members

book club, recycled golf balls, charity collection boxes and invited voluntary donations from all hotel guests.
