National college curling champion coming home Jazmine Inkster Student Reporter Local curler Kenton Maschmeyer is one of the many curlers coming out to take part in the 25 anniversary of the Last Chance Bonspiel and play in the celebrity mini game. However, this avid curler has had plenty of experiences that stretch far beyond the bounds of Lamont County. Maschmeyer’s college team from NAIT recently won the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Curling Championship, which they hosted in March at the Avonaire Curling Club. “To win it in your own club is pretty special” he added. As well, when Maschmeyer was 16, he went to the Alberta Winter Games in
Wainwright, placing third. Maschmeyer began curling young, at only 10 years old here in the Lamont Recreation Center, is where he got the beginnings of his training and time on the ice. Now, he is part of two curling teams (his college team at NAIT, and a junior team from Fort Saskatchewan) “I’m probably on the ice six days a week” explained Maschmeyer “Quite a bit of time is committed to curling” Along with all of the support from his parents, Maschmeyer also attributes some of his success to the Alberta Rocks junior camps, where he was told that he had potential, and a good chance of making it in the sport. Apart from his time spent curling, Maschmeyer also is a student at NAIT, and enjoys working on the
farm, as well as spending time with friends during his free time. Taking part in the Last Chance Bonspiel here in Lamont is not a new experience, as he has put in a team for the last three years. H o w e v e r , Maschmeyer looks forward to curling with the celebrities who have come to take part, such as Heather and David Nedohin, as well as former premier Ed Stelmach. “It will be cool to curl with some of the people I cheered on as a kid” As far as his own goals, Maschmeyer hopes to one day be able to curl in the Tim Hortons Brier saying it would really be a dream come true. “This year, we got the opportunity to curl on the Brier ice before the games.” His team was one that went out and
had a few ‘test runs’ on the ice to make sure that it was up to performance level when the games
began. For now though, he will continue playing with his college team, as
well as here in the bonspiel, and says he plans to keep curling well into his future.

Lamont doctor scales Mt. Kilimanjaro Michelle Pinon Editor
Never one to turn down a challenge, Dr. John Slanina couldn’t pass on the opportunity to climb the highest peak in Africa when he was asked to go by a couple of his patients several months ago. It was an unforgettable once in a lifetime experience, for the 58-year-old physician who has been practicing at the Lamont Health Care Centre for the past eight years. Fresh off his incredible seven day journey, Dr. Slanina was gracious enough to share his thoughts and feelings about the remarkable adventure which proved to be physically, mentally, and spiritually exhausting, exhilarating, and inspiring all at the same time. He was part of an eight member contingent who scaled Mt. Kilimanjaro to reach its summit at 19,341 feet or 5,895 metres. It is the fourth highest mountain in the world and its highest peak is Uhuru Peak on Kibo’s crater rim. While the origin of the mountain’s name is not precisely known, it is commonly referred to as “Freedom Peak.” On average, 40,000 people a year try to reach its summit, but nearly half of them have to turn back because of serious side effects such as loss of balance, dizziness, vomiting due to its elevation and low oxygen levels. In extreme cases those side effects can be fatal. “The air is very low,” says Dr. Slanina, and that’s why it is advisable to take special medication to combat those side effects before and during the trek. Dr. Slanina even brought an oxygen machine with him to measure levels of participants throughout the excursion. Dr. Sanina arrived in Tanzania on March 16th and began the trek the following day. Unfortunately, his equipment did not arrive on time, and he had to start day one without it. Even though most of his body was covered in clothing, his face and hands got burned in the heat which hovered around 36 degrees celsius. His first challenge was dealing with leg cramps. Dr. Slanina had to determine whether the cramps were from blood clots or muscular cramps. After he got cramps in both his legs, Dr. Slanina said he knew it was the cramps. He didn’t tell any of the porters or guides because he didn’t want to be sent back down, and chose instead to ride them out. “I decided to push it up to the end.” It proved to be a wise decision, and day two was much better and there was easier terrain. On day three, his equipment arrived. By then the temperature had dropped to around 15 degrees celsius. “You had to go very slow,” adds Slanina, and drink between two and three litres of water per day with several small meals throughout the day. As the days went by, the terrain went from jungle to brush to barren soil and volcanic rocks. Closer to the summit there were glaciers. The final leg of the journey was under the veil of darkness. Although it was only 100 metres from Stella Point to Uhuru Peak, it took 45 minutes to walk that distance. Shortly after sunrise Dr. Slanina and the rest of his group reached the summit. They had less than 10 minutes to enjoy the view from the top and take pictures because of limited oxygen, but Dr. Slanina took five minutes to offer up his prayers and gratitude, savoring the tranquility and peacefulness. Dr. Slanina wipes away tears from his eyes and apologizes as he reflects on that magnificent moment that he holds dear, and will undoubtedly, cherish in his heart forever. His adventure is truly inspiring, and one that has spurred him onto contemplating another. “My next project is to travel from coast to coast in Australia.” With Mt. Robson, thrown in for good measure.

Paying Tribute A man of the people. That's how many are referring to late former premier Ralph Klein. For me, he reminded me of my mom, in that he told it like it was. No sugar coating. Even if you didn't like what they had to say, you knew they were being honest and forthright, and you wanted to support them and their decisions even if you didn't always agree with them or want to do it, because it was the right thing to do. Doing the right thing; is the hardest thing. People who do the right thing are often greeted with criticism, opposition and disapproval, so having the fortitude to move forward with unpopular thoughts, ideas, plans, and policies takes great strength, confidence, and courage of conviction. There is much to be said for Klein and others like him. In the end we are all better for the tough decisions and choices that had to be made for the greater good, and are stronger and wiser because of them.
Fair weather days? Like many others, I was so glad to put winter behind me this past Easter weekend, relishing the warmer temperatures and melting snow. The sun was warm on my face. Temperatures hovered between 10 and 12 degrees celsius in Jasper. My spirits lifted considerably. That was until I heard the long range forecast on Tuesday that called for rain as well as flurries later this week. This is when you hope against hope the weatherman is wrong, or you book a quick trip to a tropical oasis; but since I can't do either, I will have to go with the flow or precipitation. But I probably won't go without a complaint or two. I've often thought it funny that we make such a big deal, and offer up our comments on the weather (mostly negative in the colder months), to everyone and anyone who will listen. It's even more ironic given the fact I grew up in Alberta. It's quite the phenomenon, maybe even something that can't be easily explained? If someone has the answer, please let me know. In the meantime, I will just have to try to grin and bear it.

Lamont Minor hockey season has come to an end, and several of its teams are able to boast about another successful winter. Many of the teams from Lamont County capped off league play Friday March 22 Sunday March 24, with successful playoffs and came home with banners documenting their wins. Among the teams were the Lamont Atoms who brought home bronze, Andrew Atoms, and Lamont Novice who both came home with silver, and Lamont Atoms who were awarded gold. Lamont Atoms, coached by Les Kardash,
had a hard fight for the win, losing their first game in Calahoo on Friday 5-4, and then winning 5-4 in a shoot out Saturday. On Sunday Lamont won 4-3 to be able to bring home the gold. Saturday Lamont Novice and Smoky Lake played their first game in a two game series. They tied 3-3 on Saturday, and went on to play Sunday losing in a tough battle 6-2 in Smoky Lake. Lamont Atoms, coached by Ward Hoculak, played Fort Saskatchewan 3B in a two game total point series. Lamont won 5-4 at home on Saturday, then went on to win in a
7-0 on Sunday in Bruderhiem. Markus Taylor had an amazing game with a shut out stopping 23 shots. Andrew Atoms won their first game against the CNN team 9-5, but lost the next two games, to take home the silver banner to Andrew. Mundare’s Novice team won the consolation round against Sturgeon. The Lamont Midget team suffered a tough loss in the bronze medal round to finish in fourth place. Overall, the successes were many, and both the players and coaches look forward to another great season next winter.

Choir chime musicians charm judges and earn top honours While competing can be very nervewracking; having the jitters proved to be worth it for Bruderheim School Grade 6 students who recently won top instrumental and honours with distinction for their choir chimes selections at the Kalyna and Fort Saskatchewan Music Festivals. Grade 6 teacher Lynsay Atchison had nothing but praise for the twelve students and their music teacher Pat Becker. “They did awesome. What a wonderful opportunity to showcase their talents,” said Atchison, who would like to see more local schools
scompete in the music festivals. The students were very happy with their performances. “It was a very fun experience,” said student Jacob Nice. His favourite song was the Three Accidental Prone Mice. He does admit that it was difficult to keep up while having to flip pages, but was very proud to have done so well. The highlight was going up on stage to accept the trophy in Fort Saskatchewan. Accepting the trophy and having the school’s name engraved on it was the highlight for Sebastian Short as well. “We sounded much bet-
ter then when we practice,” added Short, who was happy and relieved, when their performances were over. Lars Jensen was nervous and excited, and described the experience as awesome. It has also inspired him to want to play in the band next year. So was Emily Ennes who is thinking about playing the flute in the band as well. “It was fun and scary at the same time,” added MacKenzie Bedyk. For Stephen King the best part was performing in front of large crowds. Eden Foley agrees. She also enjoyed listening to other bands perform during the festival.
