This Massey Ferguson 9560 combine from AGCO-MF sitting on an agriculture equipment trailer pulled by Viking’s Perogy Trucking, is the largest in the 9500 Series.

This flag-wrapped series is a totally redesigned combine from header to spreader. It is one of only 23 made in 2011 in North America. Of that number, only four of the machines came to Canada with the remaining 20 being shipped to other countries. This year, 200 plus similar combines have rolled off the assembly line. Perogy Trucking transported the combine to various locations in Saskatchewan and Alberta for pre-delivery classes which offered farmers operating instructions.

AFSC serves a ‘Meal in the Field’ for one lucky farm’s harvest Leslie Cholowsky The Community Press

There’s something you don’t see everyday, a table fit for Sunday dinner, sitting right in the middle of a farmer’s field, but that’s what you would have seen south of Sedgewick Friday, Sept. 14 at Spring Stock Farms.

When Darrell Ball got a call in the middle of harvest from the Sedgewick office of Agriculture Financial Services Corp. (AFSC) he thought, ‘What do they want now?’

Turns out, they didn’t want anything from Ball at all, except for him to pick a time and date where they could serve his family and his har-

vest crew a meal in the field.

The Ball farm, Spring Stock Farms, was entered into the contest

by AFSC Sedgewick staff, for the draw for their first Meal in the Field for Harvest.

AFSC staff said it’s a great way to interact with their customers in a completely different way, and really learn about their customers’ operations first-hand, and the Ball family and harvest crew were quite happy to enjoy a break from lunch out of a cooler, as well as a break from making and serving it, too.

Other branches of AFSC around the province started the trend a year or so ago,

and last year the Camrose AFSC branch served a harvest supper right on the field beside a combine with a Heisler area farm winning the prize.

• Keep a map in the car. GPS systems have become the standard for most drivers -- many of which rely on them solely for navigation.

become lost when the GPS fails. Having a paper map on hand can give drivers peace of mind. Also, that same impaired satellite service could affect mobile phone signals. This makes knowing where a driver is going even more important.

• Be careful of soft and unmarked shoulders.

Rural roads may be built on the side of hills or ravines. Dirt on the side of the roads could be unstable. These roads also tend to be more narrow. Use caution when pulling to the shoulder or passing other cars.

Individuals who live in rural areas become accustomed to the subtleties of driving rural roads. However, those who are visiting or new to the area may be less tuned-in to the surroundings.

According to research, there are twice as many accidents on rural roads as there are in urban areas.

To be safe, keep these tips in mind: • Expect blind curves.

In many cases, rural roads are built to be of minimal disturbance to the surrounding landscape. This could mean that roads bend and dip every which way. Pay attention to posted speed limits -- they're very accurate for the road conditions.

• Be on animal watch.

Keep an eye for any animals which might be sharing the road. Certain times of the day, such as dawn and dusk, tend to be prime times for animals to be on the move, whether finding a new place to bed down or scout for food. A deer can total a car if hit, and even low-flying birds can cause damage. When passing farms, be on the lookout for livestock crossing the road and farmers driving equipment, such as tractors.

• Many roads may not be paved. Some drivers take paved roads for granted. In rural areas, the roads may be made of gravel or dirt. This calls for slower driving speeds to maintain traction and safety.

• Expect minimal lighting. Driving at night in rural areas can be nerve-wracking for the i n e x p e r i e n c e d . S t re e t lights are rare and may only appear at particularly dangerous curves or intersections. It will

Helping teenagers become better drivers (Metro) - It’s a new school year, and a new crop of teenagers is ready to take to the roads with their newly minted drivers’ licenses.

Most teenagers are anxious to get behind the wheel because having a license and access to a car means freedom they may not have had before.

However, parents and guardians may be worried about these teens on the road because they lack the practice and experience of more advanced drivers.

Continuing to educate young drivers about safety can help reduce the risk of accident.

Traffic accidents are the leading cause of death for teenagers in the United States and Canada.

What puts teens particularly at risk is the tendency of many young drivers to engage in reckless behaviour and/or distracted driving.

It is often up to parents to reinforce the rules of the road and also consistently work with their children so that the teens can become better drivers.

• Practice safer driving. As with any activity, practice helps hone skills and teaches people through their own mistakes. Driving is no exception.

Mistakes on the road can be serious; therefore, it is best for teen drivers to practice driving in areas that are not heavily populated or full of traffic.

Parents may want to establish rules that the teen is not able to drive solo until he or she passes the requirements set forth by Mom or Dad. Parents can routinely ride around with their teen children to gauge how progress is com-

ing along.

• Get the facts. Talk to teens about road risks and how to stay safe. Research the laws and statistics pertaining to teenage drivers and share that information.

It may not always be well received, but there’s a good chance that some of the message will get through.

• Set a good example. According to a 2007 study from Students Against Destructive Decisions, the biggest influence on how teens drive is their parents.

Almost two-thirds of high school teens say their parents talk on a cell phone while driving, almost half say their parents speed and almost one-third say their parents don't wear a safety belt.

Parents should be mindful of their own behaviors when driving and the impression those behaviours are making on youngsters.

• Establish rules.

Distracted driving is claiming more and more lives each year.

Many accidents are as the result of texting while driving. Text messaging creates a crash risk 23 times worse than driving while not distracted, according to the website Distraction.org.

Parents can implement rules, such as that cell phones are not allowed to be on while in the car or the phone should be stored in the back seat or trunk while a teen is driving.

Parents also may want to set rules that multiple passengers (friends) are not allowed to ride in the car until the teen is more accustomed to driving.

Driving is an activity that offers freedom and mobility.

It is also one that

places a very large and potentially destructive piece of machinery into the hands of a driver.

Education should be ongoing as teens learn to drive.

A passion for Figure Skating that is forever Tracy Harding Lamont Leader

Some say that to be a figure skater, you don’t need to be strong, or that it is not a true sport.

However, for all that are involved in the sport, they know different.

The top figure skaters that you see on television make it look easy and effortless, but there are years of training, and hundreds of hours spent on the ice perfecting the skills required.

Figure skating is one of those sports that is the best of both worlds; you have the athletic side that has so much strength required, as well as the beautiful side of the artistry and flow that goes along with it. It is one of those sports where that athleticism is hidden, a skater hides the fact that coming

down from that triple jump they are coming down with over four times their body weight, on one leg and thin outside skate edge.

This fall and winter season, don’t hibernate, participate!

For families with young children, everything seems to kick in to high gear after Sept. 1, as moms shuttle kids from hockey, to swimming, to music lessons, and all manner of after school activities.

For those families without school-aged children, however, winter can be a lonely time, without a lot of opportunity for social activities, except for the occasional community event.

For some, the recipe to enjoying a long winter is to go away, but for those who don’t travel during the winter, there’s still plenty to do in the winter, so don’t hibernate this year, find something new to occupy your time, and maybe make a few new friends along the way.

All communities have

some form of activity you can participate in, and the variety that can be found are bound to appeal to you.

Besides the usual activities like hockey and curling, you can also take in skiing, be it downhill, or cross-country without having to travel to the mountains, with local ski hills like Valley Ski Hill, near Alliance, and other rural ski sites.

If you’ve always wanted to learn to play an instrument, there are music teachers for everything from piano to guitar, and if you’re already an accomplished player, try and find jam sessions, like those held twice a month at the Arts, Culture, and Social Club in Hardisty.

One thing that all small communities have in common is a never-ending shortage for volunteers. You can also usual-

ly find service clubs, like Lions, Kinsmen, Royal Purple, Masons, or the Royal Canadian Legion.

Some clubs might have membership prerequisites, but most don’t, and it’s a great way to meet people and get involved in your community.

Your local library is the place to go to find out if there’s a local book club, or reading program, if that’s what interests you.

For those with an artistic nature, there are small art clubs scattered throughout our area, who meet on a regular basis to share ideas, socialize, and who take that time to work on their projects.

Some also hold courses for their members once or twice a year in different mediums, to broaden their palate.

If a paintbrush isn’t your style, there are also wood carving clubs, quilting clubs, and if you can’t find one, try dropping in at your areas Adult Education centres, to see what’s cooking in their fall and winter courses.

If you don’t see what you like, Val Rathjen of the Flagstaff Community Adult Learning says that the course materials come from suggestions and requests received by the public.

“One of the best ways we get ideas is from the feedback we get from people who have taken one of the courses.”

Rathjen says she’s always open to suggestions, and tries her best to find qualified instructors.

Even staying in shape doesn’t have to be boring.

Instead of another pretend mile on your solitary bike, why not check and see if there are any Zumba courses in your neighbourhood, or yoga classes.

Call your local dance school and see if they offer adult courses if that’s where your interest lies.

Melons, peppers among fall harvest Many area gardeners have enjoyed a bountiful harvest this year but likely none more than the Rozmahel farm just a mile north of Viking.

Not only are the corn stalks tall and laden with sweet cobs of corn, lush strawberry plants are hanging thick with sweet berries while Rozmahel Farms ready to harvest a wide variety of amazing fruits and vegetables as this year’s growing season comes to an end.

Brian Rozmahel admits many of the plants on the farm are “first time tries” and adds quickly that all are chemical free.

“We do not spray anything. We are just learning, trying new things and yes, I am very pleased with this year’s results.”

And he should be pleased.

Not many gardeners in Central Alberta can lay claim to a crop of watermelon, complimented by

honeydew and cantaloupe as well as 15 or more varieties of peppers. And that’s only the start.

Tomatoes of every variety hanging on treelike stocks in all stages of ripening.

Rozmahel knows the name of every one and the specific characteristics of each.

He knows which are great for slicing and which make the best pasta sauce and which taste great in salsa.

The structures housing some of the plants are what he calls, “farmermade” saying all the materials needed were purchased locally.

“Some of the plastic I had to buy from a greenhouse supplier but everything else is available locally.”

At intervals along the enclosed sides of the arched structures are barrels filled with water.

He explains that the barrels of water warm

during the day and expel the heat in the cool of the night, keeping the plants wrapped in warmth even as temperatures decline.

He talks as he walks from the melon house to the hoop house, passing the leafy green Brussel sprout plants and the dark green broccoli, saying much has been learned this year and that he already has plans for structural changes in the coming growing sea-

sons.

However, to the untrained eye, the endless amount of strong, healthy plants hanging with lush produce is simply amazing and there is little need to change what is obviously working.

Rozmahel says there is work to do on the farm’s marketing program but, for now, produce is sold through area farmers markets and through a U-Pick system.

The fall crop of the ever-bearing strawberries were luscious and sweet.

The hoop house is homemade from materials Rozmahel bought locally, is the structure which protects the plants as they mature.

Figure Skate Continued from Page 7 passion for the sport. It’s like a freedom of no other form, for Bilodeau, she is fairly shy around people, but when you put her on the ice on her own she is larger than life. Fedyniak lives and breathes skating.

She works hard when she is training and is always excelling to learn the next move. Lystang has such a flair for artistry on the ice, she loves to perform.

All these girls are different sizes, with different strengths and abilities, but they all have the one thing

in common, which is the smiles on their faces when they arrive to the arena for practice. They all are striving to get somewhere in the sport, and understand how much work they need to put in to achieve their goals.

If you have a passion for figure skating, and your community has a club, why not volunteer?

If your community doesn’t have a club, talk to your local recreation director at the arena, and find out how you might get one started, or if other people have the same interests.

Quilters share a genuine passion for their craft and a love to recruit others Patricia Harcourt Tofield Mercury

The members of the Tofield Country Quilters Guild share a genuine passion for their craft, as witnessed by the almost 200 quilts on display at their quilt show in August.

It’s a passion that can carry them through the fall and winter months where such activities are welcome diversions from cold or inclement weather.

The intricate designs forming the colourful display at the C.W. Sears Elementary School no doubt piqued the interest of all who attended. In fact, the guild received rave reviews for its show.

“It was an outstanding quilt show,” remarked one of the quilters during the guild's first meeting of the new quilting year. The

evening is designed to get things organized and welcome both old and new members.

The quilters seem to love the camaraderie of their guild, both for the many tips and support received while engaging in their quilting endeavours.

“To me, it’s always exciting to come back for the new year,” said guild member Carol Livingstone. “I quilt over the summer, but then I’m quilting by myself.”

So, one of the first important items to finalize for the guild will be to find a venue where they can all quilt together one Saturday out of each month.

“It’s good to see you guys all again,” said guild President Natalie Warkentin, to a room full of enthusiastic crafters.

Warkentin smiled and said, “welcome back” to laughter and applause as everyone geared up for the fall months and more quilting.

The guild had a booth at the “Don’t Hibernate Fair” in Tofield the previous week. The fair is designed to offer the community a chance to see what is offered for activities in the fall and winter months.

“We had lots of people stop by to express interest but nobody (who did so) is here,” she said, noting that anyone is welcome to come and attend a meeting to see if the guild or quilting is right for them.

Meetings are on the second and fourth Thursday of each month at the C.W. Sears staff room until Christmas.

“Come out and see what we have to offer,” said Warkentin. “You can

“It’s always an inspirational show and tell at every meeting,” said Leone, adding they are there “if you have questions or need help.

They’re full of knowledge and share it.”

The Czar Quilters are another group known for their annual quilt show, receiving rave reviews year-after-year from attendees, which is planned for late October.

Now is the time to think about how make sure your beautiful lawn can survive the long winter ahead Every weekend of the summer you have spent mowing, weeding, edging, and trimming your lawn so that it will look its best.

In order to ensure your lawn makes a complete recovery after winter hibernation, there are certain key tasks to complete before you can rest for the winter season. • Remove any fallen leaves and debris.

Raking leaves can be arduous, but it is well worth the effort.

Fallen leaves can smother the grass and lead to dead spots next season.

Mulched leaves can be added in small amounts to garden beds to provide rich organic material for next year’s crop of flowers.

Be sure to pick up any other debris as well, it can become up trapped under snow and hinder grass growth when spring arrives.

• Cut your lawn short.

Unless the season is unseasonably wet and warm, your lawn shouldn’t grow too much in October.

It pays to give it a short cut before frost arrives so that long piles of dead grass will not smother any new growth in the spring, long grass tends to bend down upon itself, trapping moisture that can lead to fungal diseases like snow mold. • Aerate the lawn. Soil can be compacted over time, especially in yards that see heavy foot traffic.

It’s important to aerate so that water and fertilizer can reach the soil. • Fertilize. Now is the time to give the lawn fresh food to overwinter and also replenish the strength of the root system. Consider a slowrelease formula designed for winteriz-

ing that will feed the lawn all winter long. • Edge the garden beds. Even though the grass above the surface of the soil will stop growing, the roots will remain viable and the lawn will still be sending out rhizomes and

tillers to produce new grass blades in the spring. Edge now so you will have less work to do in the spring. • Trim hedges and trees.

If there are any overhanging tree branches or shrubbery blocking sun-

light from reaching the lawn, cut back these areas once the foliage has thinned. • Seed bare patches.

Scour the lawn for bare patches and put down some seed in these areas. The cooler weather will enable the

seeds to germinate without having to compete with weed growth.

Once you have prepared your lawn for the winter you can bring in any lawn tools that need repair and have them set and packed away for the spring.

September is Life Literacy Month, and what better time to take up a new challenge.

While our kids and teens go back to school every fall, we need to remember than learning doesn’t stop as we get older, in fact there is growing evidence that keeping our brains active may protect against cognitive decline.

Whether it is brushing up on your reading and writing skills, or learning a new skill, ABC Life Literacy Canada encourages you to celebrate Life Literacy Month by starting your own life-long learning journey.

They encourage you to make a list of things you want to learn, and see how many you can accomplish.

According to the Beaver County Community Adult Learning Council, four in 10 adults could use some help with reading and writing to succeed in everyday life.

We live in a world that changes constantly, and adult education can help you fill the gaps.

For many of us, it’s been decades since we’ve been in a classroom, and many may be afraid to sign up because they think they won’t fit in, but according to Basic Skills Instructor Karen Bosworth, ‘It’s not like that at all.”

Literary practioners focus on individual learning styles, and construct lessons that are

relevant to your learning goals.

Nanette Jones, Literacy Coordinator at the Learning Centre, says, “It takes bravery, sometimes, for people to admit they need help in some areas.”

Jones says people can be matched with a volunteer tutor, or work directly with a learning coach, like herself or the centre's Lois Polege.

Jones has to deal with a perpetual shortage of tutors, “You don’t need to have a teaching certificate to be a tutor,” she says, adding, “perhaps mentor is a better word for what we’re asking people to do.”

Jones is facing a dire shortage of tutors this fall, she’s looking for 30 people.

“We will offer them all the training they need,” says Jones, and encourages anyone who is interested to take the first step and contact her.

Increasing your literacy skills, or helping someone else to do so, can have a lasting effect on your quality of life.
