A water main break on main street in Lamont turned into a major clean up job for crews who worked throughout the weekend to fix the problem. Crews were still working on Monday to reopen the stretch of 50 Ave in front of the high school.

Water main break causes delays and detours Town of Lamont public works employees put in overtime to clear roads and prevent further damage Jazmine Inkster Student Reporter

Town of Lamont Public works were kept busy over this weekend with a water main break reported on Friday. The call was made to public works at 8:30 on Friday morning with reports of a leak. The Town of Lamont enlisted the services of Nu Edge Construction to help public works with getting the work done. 50 Ave is still closed off to drivers due to equip-

ment still being on the road, however, according to town foreman Richard Chernyk the road should be back open hopefully by the end of Monday. "I've just made arrangements to have someone come in to repack and clay the roads" explains Chernyk. However, he says it is difficult to locate dry clay at the moment. As of now, everything is back to normal, with the pipes now at 100% capacity, all the town is waiting on is the reopen-

ing of the road, and the removal of the equipment so drivers do not have to take detours to get downtown. There has been no flooding of houses, and no property damage to the town or residents. However, water was turned off for two hours to the entire town on Friday night from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. "With the heavy frost, and the winter we had, we couldn't isolate the pipe shut off" According to Chernyk,

the piece that had broken was the service saddle, which usually has a 30 to 40 year span. It was the decay of this piece that had caused all of the problems with the pipes. Because of the piece’s life span, Chernyk says the only thing they can do is fix it as the time comes. Chernyk explained that although this was considered to be a water main break, it was not a broken pipe. At press time, no damage estimates were available to be released.
