More than 60 youth participate in K of C free throw event at Lamont High School Competition builds character and great memories for local students

These students were all smiles after receiving their certificates from Knights of Columbus free throw chairman Larry Koziak.

A total of 62 Lamont youth between 10 and 14 years of age participated in the local Knights of Columbus free throw championship at the high school this past Wednesday.

The annual event was another great success, and winners Garth Beauregard, Alicia Hollonquest, Jared Bartz, and Adrianna Smyth will go on to compete at the district level, said chairman Larry Koziak.

Assisting him throughout the hour long event were: Allan and Joan Borys, Chris and Mylissa Greening, Colleen Koziak, and Phillip Malica.

Each of the partici-

pants were recognized for their participation, and the top sharpshooters received certificates for their efforts.

The K of C have been promoting the freethrow competition for more than 30 years, and Koziak has been acting as event chairman for the past seven years.

Koziak, who is also the youth director for Our Lady of Lourdes council #6382, says the event is a great opportunity for the youth to have fun in a larger group of new kids, in a competitive atmosphere, and be recognized for their talents.

"It's a great way for some kids to get this experience of advancing to higher levels at different schools that normally

don't get the chance. It helps build character," adds Koziak. And from the feedback he's received from former participants, it has been a source of great fun and wonderful memories.

Last year, more than 179,000 sharp shooters participated in over 3,000 local competitions.

The Knights of Columbus is an international Catholic family fraternal service organization with nearly 1.7 million members in over 12,500 local councils.

Last year, Knights donated 60 million volunteer hours and $130 million to charitable and benevolent causes, sponsoring projects to benefit their church, councils, communities, families and youth.

All eyes were on the shooter as he gave it his best shot. Each competitor got to take 15 shot, and the top scorers qualified to advanc to a district competition.

The Town of Bruderheim will be conducting a Public Hearing for the purpose of text amendments to the Land Use Bylaw 788-2008.

The amendments include: 1) Revising the definitions for Alcohol Sales 2) Adding provisions for the placement of Election Signs, and 3) Revising the definitions for Adult Entertainment.

Safety of those who keep us safe It didn't take long before news of the shootings of two Mounties near Killam last Tuesday started to spread.

Within hours, reports were running rampant as to what had happened, and what was happening.

The first thing that popped into people's minds was Mayerthorpe, and the slaying of four RCMP officers on March 3, 2005. They were executing a property seizure on the property of James Roszko, 11 km north of Rochfort Bridge near the Town of Mayerthorpe.

In this most recent incident, two RCMP officers were executing a search warrant on a rural property east of Sedgewick south of Highway 13 at Range Road 121, when Cst. Sid Gaudette and Cst. Sheldon Shaw were both shot in the torso.

So one of the first questions that crossed my mind was: Why weren't they wearing bullet proof vests?

Whether RCMP officers may be or expected to be exposed to firearms or not, they should be wearing that type of body armour at all times.

Getting wounded or killed in the line of duty could just as easily happen pulling over a driver for speeding or conducting a search warrant or responding to an incident of domestic violence; and police should at least have the equipment to protect themselves as they are vulnerable to a whole gamut of risky situations.

Apparently, the plan to have new protective gear out to frontline officers over the next couple of years. Good enough response time? I don't think so.

While the fatality inquiry report, completed ironically on March 3, 2011 concluded the Mayerthorpe deaths were a "uniquely tragic event", many people are beginning to doubt that as an errie case of deja vu happened again almost seven years later.

The words from assistant chief judge Pahl must seem chilling to family members, friends, and colleagues of the Cst. Gaudette and Cst. Shaw, who were fortunate enough to have survived last week's shootings.

In his findings, Pahl stated: "I conclude that this was a uniquely tragic event which could not reasonably have been foreseen or prevented. I find there were no failings in the training, experience, or abilities of the officers who lost their lives."

But now, I wonder how the system has failed these two officers, and potentially many more officers across the province and country, by not equipping them with the equipment and resources to adequately do their jobs?

Now is the time to get answers, and if no answers can be had, then to ask the right questions to make changes effective and immediate.

There is no higher price than the loss of service and life to something that could be preventable.

Canada’s Parlia-mentary Budget Officer says that Old Age Security is sustainable beyond the year 2082. Payments today cost 2.4% of our national GDP. When the Boomers max out in 2031, that percentage will climb to 3.1% but then drop off again.

The fact is, more than half of Old Age pensions go to seniors earning less than $25,000 year.

Canadian workers have paid taxes their entire careers expecting that these benefits will be available to them when they turn 65.

Raising the age for OAS will mean that some will have to stay longer in the workforce, whether they’re physically up to it or not. Seniors’ poverty rates could rise by onethird. That’s just not right – not in a successful country like Canada.

Athlete of the Week Jake Taylor, a young star with a bright future Submitted by father and coach Dave Bjorn Taylor Having spent six years in Canmore, Jake has been cross country skiing since he was two. While the family moved to Lamont four years ago it took him out of the mountains, he has continued to ski at local ski areas, including the Strathcona Wilderness Centre, and has made as many trips back to the mountains to ski when he can. Jake has also been training in the sport of biathlon, combining cross country skiing with rifle marksmanship.

After a few years of hockey, Jake decided to

pursue cross country ski racing as his main sport, and has excelled this season. The first Alberta Cup races of the season were held in Canmore in early December, and Jake opened the season with great success, stepping onto the podium with a silver medal in the sprint race and a fifth place in the distance race. Since then, he has been at the top of his age group at every regional race and time trial, including the Alberta Winter Games trials.

He competed in the Zone 5/6 trials (and placed 2nd), and then Jake placed first in the Zone 7

Winter Games trials race, and competed at the Alberta Winter Games this past weekend, Feb. 911.

Jake's passion for skiing keeps him motivated to train and constantly seek ways to improve his skiing. When not training or racing, Jake volunteers as a Jackrabbit ski instructor at the Strathcona Wilderness Centre, and is also developing his wax technician skills. He actively promotes the sport to his friends, and helps his brother Erik and sister Rachel develop their ski skills and love for cross country skiing.

Lamont Minor Hockey Association put on a social this weekend, which included a live auction.

Overall the event was a success. After the live auction was finished, the band Crossroads began playing, and the guests danced the night away.

Heartwarming quilts donated for the elderly Patches of wonderful colors brighten the lives of patients at the Lamont Health Care Centre

It all started with some scraps of fabric.

And now, 13 years later, charitable projects through the Loose Ends sewing group continue to comfort the elderly and assist youth in the local community.

Pam Jackman, owner of the LA Sewing Centre, said a handful of seamstresses meet once a week to turn out lovely creations for people in need.

Some of the recipients have included palliative care and alzheimer's patients at the health centre, residents at the nursing home, and residents of youth ranches.

"We started out by doing placemats," says Jackman.

"The families are so pleased," added Zabel, and the quilts remain with the patients families

afterwards. Zabel says the patients faces light up at the sight of the brightly colored patch work quilts, and are extremely grateful to the members who had given of their time and talents, to make the quilts.

Zabel would like to personally thank those community members, clubs, and businesses for their acts of kindness and donations, monetary and otherwise, to the health centre.

"I thank them for their compassion and desire to help our patients."

Both Zabel and Jackman agree that the project is a nice way of paying it forward. And as long as there's a need, Jackman says members will continue sewing up their loose ends.

Chipman Fire Department responds to local call

Members of the Chipman Fire Department received a call shortly after 1:30 p.m. last Thursday afternoon of a fire southeast of the community.

A livestock barn and two out sheds were fully engulfed in flames when members arrived on scene 20 minutes later, stated fire chief Steve Rasmussen.

Smoke was visible for miles around, and was easily detected along

Highway 15 east of Chipman. The fire was located on a private residence along Range Road 183 just south of Township Road 540.

Also, on scene were members of the Prairie Emergency Systems from Lamont. Members of the Mundare Fire Department also provided assistance throughout the afternoon, stated Rasmussen. No injuries were reported, but some goats were killed in the blaze. "We were told some pigs escaped from

the other sheds."

Rasmussen said overall, there was great cooperation between departments, and was very ple-ased with the new dispatch system, that is working well. Members of the Chipman Fire Department left the scene around 7:30 p.m.

No estimate on the amount of damages was disclosed, and Rasmussen said they were unable to determine the cause of the blaze.

Movie Marathon Supports kids with Cancer JANUARY 27 AND 28, 2012 Lamont High School students showed their true colours again on January 27-28, by taking part in the Movie Marathon supporting Kids with Cancer.

Fourty students attended overnight, and collected $1321 in pledges for this worthy cause.

It was truly a pleasure being with these positive, well behaved and enthusiastic students Who knew making pizza together would be such a fun experience!

We thank these students for their dedication to this cause and look forward to the next Movie Marathon.

Mundare students impress judges at local competition 50/50 draw

Not only did they speak their minds.

They spoke from their hearts.

The 15 students from Mundare School who competed in the third annual Speak Your Mind competition on Fe. 8th.

The students, in Grades 4 to 8, also expressed their feelings and heartfelt emotions during the event. There was a good smattering of humour where appropriate, and they all impressed the panel of judges who were most impressed with the clarity of their speech and the quality of their speeches.

Organization, content, and delivery of their speeches were also evaluated over the course of the competition.

Mackenzie Legault and Frances Cardinal were co-emcees, and introduced all of the speakers, including special guest speaker Colby Rogers who talked about his love of Drive Thru's, and named all of the burgers on the A&W menu, as well as his favorite item of all - root beer!

Cockatiels, military aircraft, snowmobiling, wrestling, hammerhead sharks, dogs, girl guides and poverty were just some of the topics the young speakers delved into during the hour and a half long competition.

AIR QUALITY How Cold Weather Affects Air Quality February 2012

When the weather gets cold enough, exhaust from vehicles and homes becomes a very visible mist in the air. Is all that vapour simply more visible to the eye, or is the level of pollution actually greater in the winter? The answer is yes to both questions.

Some sources of emissions, like those from industrial operations in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland, stay fairly constant throughout the year, no matter what the season. But roaring fireplaces, wood stoves and idling vehicles in the winter all add up to higher levels of particulate matter (the particles that make up smoke) and carbon monoxide (from vehicle emissions).

On top of this, cold temperatures and stagnant air have a way of creating a build-up of these substances near the ground, particularly during a weather phenomenon called temperature inversions. In other seasons or weather conditions, warm air sits near the ground and the air can rise easily and carry away pollutants. In a temperature inversion, cold air is trapped near the ground by a layer of warm air. The warm air acts like a lid, holding these substances down.

During a temperature inversion, smoke can’t rise and carbon monoxide can reach unhealthy levels. From an air quality perspective, storms are a welcome weather event. Wind, rain and snow storms are sometimes called scrubbers because they help clear out and disperse these substances of concern.

Fort Air Partnership is the organization responsible for collecting ambient (outdoor) air quality data in the Heartland region and surrounding areas. Most of the time during the winter, air quality in the Fort Air Partnership airshed stays within good or low health risk ranges, as measured by the Alberta Air Quality Health Index. If AQHI readings do increase in the winter, it’s generally due to the temperature inversion phenomenon.

Indoor air quality also becomes a greater concern during the winter because of the amount of time that people stay inside with poor ventilation. Without adequate circulation, carbon dioxide levels can become an issue, leading to headaches and lethargy. Generally, outdoor air quality is better than indoor air, so the best antidote is to get outside regularly, open windows for short periods if possible and keep fireplaces and ventilation systems clean and maintained.
