There was plenty of action on and off the race track during the Andrew Sportoff Weekend June 29, 30, and July 1. A demolition derby, slo-pitch tournament, ball hockey tournament, pancake breakfasts, show ‘n shine, parade, dance, and multitude of children’s activities and games. The weather was ideal for the funfilled weekend, and temperatures averaged around the 28 degree celsius mark. The annual event, sponsored by the Andrew Agricultural Society, was very well attended and hats off to the volunteers who worked so hard to make it so successful. Proceeds from the fundraiser go directly back into the community to benefit Andrew and area residents.

Lamont Community Garden a growing concern for avid green thumbs and dedicated local volunteers Michelle Pinon Editor

When Chipman resident Keith Clifford heard about a proposed community garden project last spring, he jumped at the opportunity to get involved.

So did Lamont resident Mary Peniuk, an avid green thumb who no longer had space to plant her own garden, but wanted to enjoy fresh vegetables in the summer.

Luckily for the two of them, they found Melissa Shiach, an early childhood development and seniors co-ordinator with Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) in the Lamont County region, who spearheaded and organized the project.

Shiach said she, along with Clifford and Peniuk also have Pastor Ron Wurtz to thank, as he allowed them the space

to have the garden on the church site.

This is the second summer the community garden has been on the site. The first summer the team of three dug up the sod and worked the garden together.

This summer they expanded the area to about 65 feet by 120 feet, and picked out separate spots for each of them to grow their own vegetables.

Peniuk plants a few spuds while Clifford talks about some of the vegetables he’s planted.

Clifford expanded the size of his parcel in order to be able to do more canning and freezing this year.

Clifford also plans on selling some of his produce locally in Chipman and Lamont so other residents can enjoy the fresh flavours and honest to goodness wholesomeness of the top quality vegetables. “Everyone loves garden fresh pro-

duce, but not everyone loves gardening,� adds Clifford, who is more than happy to do the work, and provide the end results for friends, neighbours, and other customers. He will also be donating a portion of his proceeds to the local food bank.

He is careful to point out that he, along with his fellow volunteer gardeners do not use any chemicals or pesticides on the plants.

Shiach hopes more people will get directly involved with the community garden project next year. “In the future we plan to have raised beds so they can be accessible to everyone,� said Shiach. “We do want a variety of people involved, especially families.� If anyone is interest in signing up for next year, Shiach encourages them to contact the FCSS office.

Lamont area home brutally vandalized Michelle Pinon Editor

Glenn Ridland's life took an irreversible turn late last week when the Lamont area resident discovered graphic obscenities and a death threat spray painted on the front door and siding of his home.

Both the outside and inside of the home were "trashed" said Ridland, who said multiple windows, dishes, and television, were smashed. He estimates the damage to be in the neighbourhood of $50,000.

He confirmed there is

no insurance on the home that was listed for sale at the time of the incident.

As to who or whom committed the crime, Ridland said he can't say with 100 per cent certainty, but does have a strong feeling whose behind it.

"The police can't lay charges because I don't have proof," added Ridland. The matter is, however, currently under investigation.

Ridland said he feels totally violated, has been unable to sleep since the vandalism which occurred sometime between last Wednesday

afternoon and early Thursdsay morning.

Ridland said he had been living with his father at the time of the incident, but neither of them were at home at the time of the crime.

Ridland said he will not be returning to the home again, which he had previously shared with his wife and children for the past 11 years. "I'm afraid for my life." He will not go out in public alone, and has to relocate outside of the area because of the disturbing incident.

The outside of the house has grafiti written on the siding and doors of threats, and name calling, as well as windows that had rocks thrown through them. On the inside there was furniture flipped over, and more writing on the walls. There was a gate that was locked, and must have been cut with bolt cutters. The lock is now nowhere to be found. In 215 days, the house has only been left alone by the residents for seven nights.

This happened on the seventh night he said.

Being a ‘Watch Dog’ When we moved out to the country area, we had hoped that we had gotten away from the acts of vandalism and unsafe activities.

However, learning that in the last couple weeks a home more in the country than us was brutally and disappointingly vandalized Being that we are such small communities, and we all pretty well know each other, we are needing to be our own 'watch dogs'.

As neighbours in our small communities, and in the rural parts we all need to work together to watch out for suspicious acts that may be going on. I know that when I am gone for a day, or out in the evening, that my place is safe because of the neighbours that I have.

They keep a watchful eye on the hamlet that I live in.

Everyone wants to feel safe within where they live, but still need to have caution as well.

Even in the rural quiet setting, there is proof that crimes do still go on. So lets all watch out for our neighbours, and then that action will be paid back.

With summer comes Summer Sizzler Summer Sizzler is coming around the corner. It should be a blow out of a event.

The festivities will begin on Friday, July 27th with the rodeo and fireworks. Then on the Saturday it will be a full day of events with the parade up main street, pancake breakfast, the trade show, the midway, more rodeo fun, combine crunch, and the evening dance for adults.

Then Sunday will wrap up the festivities with more midway, beer gardens, and concession, as well as the tractor pull sponsored by Webb's, and the demolition derby.

It should be a very entertaining weekend, and hopefully everyone wil be able to make it out and cheer on everyone involved, as well as have some great fun while at it.

Letter to the Editor Grandpa’s War in Bomber Command Dear Editor, I am writing on behalf of The War Amps Operation Legacy, in which members of the Association’s Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program help preserve and commemorate Canada’s military heritage by teaching others about the important sacrifices of our fallen soldiers and veterans.

Of the more than 45,000 Canadians and Newfoundlanders who gave their lives in the

Second World War, 10,000 were in Bomber Command – one of the most dangerous occupations of the war.

On June 28, the Queen unveiled the Royal Air Force Bomber Command Memorial in central London, UK. To mark the unveiling, The War Amps released a memoir in its Canadian Military Heritage Series called Grandpa’s War in Bomber Command, a personal account of the experiences of the late Jack W. Singer. As well,

members of Operation Legacy donated copies of the memoir to their local libraries.

Born and raised in Toronto, Singer joined the Royal Canadian Air Force at age 19 and served as a bomb-aimer with No. 9 Squadron, RAF. He wrote this memoir for his grandchildren in 1998, and, following his wish, it is now being made available to a wider audience to help people understand how it really was in World War II.

Andrew Cooperative Association board member Arnie Ostafichuk says there are a lot of area residents and Coop members who have benefitted from Haying in the '30's cancer charity; so it was nice to return the favour during a recent fundraiser.

"The two day event raised an amazing $1,000 thanks to the generosity of Andrew Coop members," said Ostafinchuk. The Andrew Coop donated product for the two day barbecue held during Equity Days on June 14 and 15.

Ostafichuk says Equity Days is held

annually, and is a time when the association returns funds to its members.

For the 2011 fiscal year, members purchasing fuel from bulk or cardlock services received refunds of more than $120,000.

"The board of directors of the Coop wish to thank the members and supporters for their continuing efforts to enhance the good works of community non-profit and charitable organizations."

Haying in the '30s was founded in 1999 to provide funds for transportation and other services in support of families dealing with cancer, and is appreciative of all the donations it is able toreceive.

Murray Laronde can’t say enough about the sponsors and archers who donated and participated in the Lamont Fish and Game Association’s recent archery fun shoot.

“It was our first annual 3-D Fun Shoot,” said Laronde, who heads the association’s archery committee and helped organized the two day event that was held at the association’s trout pond on June 16 and 17.

“We had approximately 40 shooters. I was really happy with the sponsorship for the targets and prizes.” He was also

happy with all of the assistance of fellow members and volunteers; in particular Vince and Dominique Pichota and Ed and Karen Babichuk.

Laronde designed the route from scratch, and tried to incorporate a variety of targets and challenges for the shooters. “We received a lot of rave reviews from shooters,” who tested their skills on 26 targets.

The shooters complemented volunteers on the relaxed atmosphere of the fun shoot. Having great weather for the event was an added bonus, stated Laronde.

Based on the success of the shoot, organizers are

planning another 3-D Fun Shoot on July 21 and 22. The event is open to archers of all ages and abilities, and Laronde is hoping for another good response.

Eventually, Laronde would like to host six shoots a year, with perhaps offering some sanctioned events some time in the future.

Laronde says archery is an addictive sport, and he is hoping to introduce the sport to many other residents in the near future. In the meantime he will be redesigning the course and counting down the days until the next fun shoot.

IFHP Reform Means Fairness for Taxpayers Ottawa, Ontario, July 4, 2012 – Leon Benoit, Member of Parliament for VegrevilleWainwright, is pleased to announce that the Government of Canada has recently taken steps to reform the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP), a program that provides health-care benefits to refugee claimants and protected persons. “Through this legislation, our

Government remains committed to ensuring a level of fairness for taxpayers,” Benoit said.

If left untouched, the current IFHP would continue to provide basic health-care coverage, as well as supplemental health-care coverage including pharmaceutical care, vision care and dental care. Under the new provisions, protected persons and refugee claimants – including smuggled migrants and

bogus asylum claimants – will not be able to access these supplemental health services that are unavailable to many Canadian taxpayers. “It is unfair to ask Canadians to fund benefits for protected persons and refugee claimants that they are not necessarily entitled to themselves,” added Benoit.

As of June 30, 2012, the IFHP will continue to provide what is typically provided by most

provincial health plans, including; hospital services, similar to what is currently provided in most cases; services of a doctor or registered nurse, similar to what is currently provided in most cases; laboratory, diagnostic and ambulance services, similar to what is currently provided in most cases; and medication and vaccines, but only when needed to prevent or treat a disease posing a risk to public

health or a condition of public safety concern.

In 2006, the C o n s e r v a t i v e Government inherited an immigration system that did not meet the needs of a changing economy.

With the action taken by the Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, the Government is one step closer to building an immigration system that serves our national inter-

est, grows the economy, creates new businesses and jobs, and attracts the best and brightest from around the world to Canada.

“We must always find a balance between the generosity of the Canadian system and the need to protect public health and safety,” said Benoit. “This legislation does both.”

Chipman Market was devoid of business last Thursday morning. A sign in the window indicated it will be closed temporarily. No other information was provided to customers. Hopefully it will re-open soon, as it is one of the stopping spots for local travellers to fill up.
