The Red Knights Motorcycle Club active in Alberta Killam firefighter explains why they are a different kind of motorcycle club Leslie Cholowsky Editor-The Community Press
When most of us see Harley Davidsons, and leather vests with patches from afar, television and movies have unfairly trained us to see outlaws; but there is one unique motorcycle club that spans the world, made up of current and retired firemen. The Red Knights were started when a group of Massachusetts firemen, while visiting a cycle shop, complained that
while law enforcement members had a motorcycle club, called the Blue Knights, there was no official club for firefighters. Then, on August 17, 1982, a small group of motorcycle enthusiasts got together in the Northboro, MA fire headquarters, and laid the groundwork for the Red Knights. The next year, applications for chapters came in from all over North America, and the club became the Red Knights
Lindseth (R) still serves the Killam Fire Department in an advisory capacity, after 40-plus years of active service, that included the role of Fire Chief.
International Firefighters Motorcycle Club. Today there are more than 300 Red Knights chapters, and 9,000 members throughout the world. The club holds local conventions, and in 2004, Edmonton, home of the Alberta 1 chapter, hosted the international members. Alberta has seven chapters in all, from Cold Lake to Crowsnest Pass. Cyril Lindseth, of Killam, has made a secondary career of being a volunteer fireman. He served as long-time Chief of the Killam Fire Department, receiving an Exemplary Services medal for 40 years of service from the Province, and a certificate of appreciation from the Town of Killam for over 40 years of service, in April, 2010. In fact, Lindseth still serves the Killam department in an advisory capacity. He’s also had a love of motorcycles, but until now has rarely had the opportunity to indulge himself in that direction. Lindseth had heard about the Red Knights, and started looking into the club a year or so ago, with an eye towards joining, one day when he found the perfect bike. See KNIGHTS P4
