Bruderheim School teacher wins prestigious Edwin Parr Award Michelle Pinon Editor
Janice Vandelannoite always dreamed of being a teacher. But she put her kids first. That was until her three children and husband put her first, and gave the former educational assistant the support and encouragement to return to school to earn her teaching degree. What was more "shocking" to Vandelannoite, was being nominated for prestigious Edwin MICHELLE PINON PHOTO the Bruderheim School Grade 6 teacher Janice Parr Award, which recogVandelannoite was selected out of 14 nominees nizes outstanding first to win the Edwin Parr Award for excellence in year teachers in the teaching. province. One of 14 nomi-
nees, in zones two and three, Vandelannoite was even more shocked to hear her name called during an awards gala in Edmonton on May 25. "It was like I was dreaming," says Vandelannoite, who woke up several times that night. For her, the award means that her work is appreciated. "I put my whole heart in my job. I have high expectations for the kids, and they're meeting them." Her Grade 6 students share their happiest and saddest moments with her as well as what they did over the weekend. She has developed a close bond and special relationship
with the students. "I love them like my own kids." So it will be no surprise there will also be a few tears when she has to say goodbye to them at the end of June. She also feels "blessed" to be working at Bruderheim School and with such great staff members. "They are a group of warm and inviting individuals who has the students' best interests at heart!" Vandelannoite also has high praise for principal Sven Danzinger. "He is very supportive to all staff and community members. We are lucky to have him as principal!" The praise is
returned in kind by Danzinger, who recently stated: "Mrs. Vandelannoite is a very worthy recipient of this award. She consistently demonstrates caring and dedication to her students, school, and profession. She is a tremendous asset not just to the school, but to EIPS as well. I know that she will have a highly rewarding and fulfilling career." Fellow staff feel the same. Sharon Taylor says that "Janice exemplifies a dedicated teacher. She loves her job and gives it all of her effort and enthusiasm." See TEACHER P. 3
