Creative visions brought to life by gifted pysanky artist Michelle Pinon Editor

When Sylvia Kuzyk goes to sleep at night she dreams about eggs. Not just any eggs, but exquisite Ukrainian Easter Eggs, psyanky, that she envisions in beautiful bright colours and intricate patterns. Every psyanky tells a story, and several Lamont and area residents were fortunate enough to see her wonderful works of art last Wednesday as she had a table set up at the local Alberta Treasury Branch. Kuzyk, was on location at the invitation of her niece Debbie Thomas who was selling baking

and perogies to raise money for a special fence project for long-term residents at the Lamont Health Care Centre. “It (the special fence) will allow residents to go outside in the summer time,” said Thomas, who has managed to raise around $4,500 over the past year for the project which is estimated to cost around $17,000 altogether. Thomas will also be selling hamburgers during the upcoming BullA-Rama on April 27th at the Lamont Recreation Centre. For every person who takes a test drive in a Ford, local charities, including the special fence project, will receive

$20. Thomas, who was so proud of her aunt’s special talents and gifts, could not contain her enthusiasm and admiration for the psyanky that are such an integral part of Ukrainian culture. Kuzyk, a former Lamont resident, was more than happy to showcase and sell her one of a kind designs. Kuzyk said it can take between hours to days to weeks to produce the extremely delicate and beautiful chicken and ostrich eggs. It is a painstaking labour of love, and Kuzyk is very proud to be able to carry on the wonderful tradition, and teaches classes to all who would like to follow in her footsteps. Kuzyk, first picked up a kistka, the writing tool used to apply beeswax to the eggs which is used to imprint the complicated patterns and designs. Even though she has created thousands upon thousands of eggs during her life, no two eggs are alike. The amazing creations are a joy to behold, and that is why she creates them, for people to enjoy, admire, and pass on as heirlooms to family members.

“My eggs are all over the world,” commented Kuzyk, who clearly is proud to have had such a wide reaching impact. Very few people are continuing the tradition, adds Kuzyk, who wishes that wasn’t the case; but somewhat explains their widespread popularity. It’s a way of keeping old traditions alive, and Kuzyk loves sharing her finished work with other people. The language of symbols is what adorns Ukrainian pysanky. Every tiny configuration in the larger pattern has a meaning. She adds that the three main themes which appear in the design are animal, plant and geometrical shapes. For example, flowers represent the beauty of nature and depict love, charity and good will. Birds are delicate symbols which represent spring. Roosters and hens denote fertility and fulfillment of wishes. The Greek letters for Jesus Christ, Son of God Savior, spell out the Greek word for fish, ichthys, which helped people find their way out of confusion. Originally, members of her family made the

Kuzyk remembers her mother saying that if a blessed egg was in the house it would protect them from fire and from hail. It’s clear that Kuzyk’s gifts have blessed many

recipients, local and abroad, and have arrived just in time to adorn the table for the sacred Easter celebration. Before departing, she wishes a customer prosperity. It is clear that her heartfelt wish has made a lasting impression, just as permanent as her special psyankys.

Lamont County announces Babas & Borscht Festival Submitted by Lamont County Lamont County Economic Development Manager Jim Newman has officially announced the Babas & Borscht Ukrainian Festival, an actionpacked weekend targeted at Ukrainians and “wannabe” Ukrainians of all ages Aug. 24 and 25 in Andrew. Babas and Borscht is designed to build on the platform started with the Doors Open event from previous years. We hope to invigorate it with free family entertainment, Ukrainian traditions & history, locally sourced food, games, music, beer gardens, vendors, a dinner and dance and of course borscht.” “Even though Babas and Borscht is a Lamont County initiative, Andrew is the perfect location for this year’s festival because of the infrastructure needed to fully develop our vision,” said Newman. “The village has several historical and tourism amenities that add to the festival program.” They are all within a horse drawn shuttle ride from

the hub of the action: Andrew Community Hall and Grounds. With years of experience as coordinator for Doors Open and strong ties to the community, Hazel Anaka seemed perfectly suited to take the helm organizing the new festival, added Newman. “When I met Jim in late December we discussed the viability and longterm future of Doors Open. It was decided that perhaps after seven years the event was in need of a revamp. We were struggling with a dwindling volunteer base and stagnant visitor numbers. I proposed the idea of a 2-day festival celebrating Ukrainian culture and was thrilled with the response from Jim and Lamont County Communications Coordinator, Ryan Steblyk,” said Anaka. “The creative synergy and can-do attitude we share is exciting and will serve the festival well.” Babas and Borscht promises a mix of local and professional talent and activities geared to every age group. The weekend is structured in a fun, family-

oriented way with a theme of cultural preservation and exploring the region’s agricultural history. Upon arrival to the Andrew Community Hall visitors will show up at the Passport Office to get a Ukrainian name and photo identity for the weekend. Baba Magda will be the hospodena (hostess) providing information in costume and in character. Families will wander through Babas Bazaar sampling products, buying handcrafted items and foodstuffs, learning from exhibitors. They will pause to take in some of the main stage entertainment, a mix of music, dance, comedy and storytelling. If they’re hungry, authentic food is available from Baba’s Bistro. If they’re thirsty, a beer garden featuring a signature festival drink awaits. Soon they hurry off to watch demonstrations or check out displays. Or cheer on their team taking part in the Ukrainian Games Triathlon. Or passports in hand they climb aboard the horse drawn shuttle to all the other

attractions in town—church, museum, grain elevator, borscht cook-off, and mini golf. Special activities for kids ensure no one is left out. Saturday night brings a four course Ukrainian feast featuring locally sourced food, performance by a professional dance troupe followed by a dance. Sunday will see a church service, brunch and continuation of activities, demonstrations and displays. Early birds will snag one of the many camping spots in town so not as to miss a minute of the weekend’s activities. Tour groups are encouraged to contact the Coordinator for help in planning their outing. “This type of festival is a natural fit for the county,” stated Steblyk who, along with Anaka, has Ukrainian roots in Lamont County. “We intend to create a trust fund for historic church sites maintenance as a legacy to the Doors Open event,” says Anaka.

County council sends letter of concern to regional waste commission regarding funding Lamont County has sent a letter of concern to the local landfill commission regarding a six percent ($16,000) increase to the municipality’s portion of the requisition. Council made the motion at its March 13 meeting upon the recommendation of chief administrative officer Al Harvey. Reeve Wayne Woldanski said he thought the county had been assured there wouldn’t be a rate

increase, and was surprised to hear otherwise. Coun. Roy Anaka made the motion: “To direct the reeve to send a letter to the Lamont County Solid Waste Commission (LCSWC) requesting clarification for the increase in the requisition given the assurances provided that increases were not in the foreseeable future.” The motion was carried unanimously. Commission chair Jim Palmer was also sur-

prised by the motion, and pointed out the county should have been aware of the increase if representatives had attended the Jan. 24 meeting when the budget was discussed and passed. Palmer said council representative Chris Klita was not present at that meeting, and neither was council’s alternate Wayne Woldanski. He also pointed out the agenda for the meeting was circulated to com-

Women of all ages enjoy a day of “fine tuning” Jazmine Inkster Student Reporter

St Michael was a busy place March 16, attracting 90 women from all over Alberta to the hamlet’s recreation centre for this year’s Spring Tune Up Women's Conference. The conference was hosted by the Lamont County Community Adult Learning Council (CALC), and boasted speakers who were able to keep the crowd informed and entertained throughout the day, while free childcare was provided at no charge for the moms. Among the speakers were Shelly Morrison, the owner of "Clutter Cutter Inc.", and the first registered organizer in Edmonton, Nadine Stielow and her employees from Thiels Greenhouses in Bruderheim, and Amanda Welliver, founder and owner of Paradigm Esteem which is a company based on helping girls and women improve their self esteem. Along with the speakers, guests were also treated to an exercise break with Linda Mills, and a fashion show put

on by Gerry's clothing as they enjoyed their lunch. The day was mc'd by May Adamyk, who always found something to help the ladies to laugh throughout the day. During Morrison's presentation, the audience was forced to ask themselves difficult questions to figure out the source and the solution to the clutter in their lives. Morrison explained to the women how they would sometimes have to think "Outside the bin" in order to get where they wanted to be. "When it gets messier before it gets better, that’s progress" explains Morrison. During her presentation she also explained that it was important to always put a time limit on what you were going to get done, and always schedule in the time to their day, using a pen on their calendar, not a pencil. Stielow and her crew helped to open the audience’s eyes to the true "joy of plants" by not only telling them about what is new in the greenhouse for this year, but also what is new in the

way of trends for people who live in any situation, such as miniature fairie gardens, and flower frames for those who live in a home without any real outside space. As well as plants, Stielow also had one of her workers speak about the ways of removing the threat of insects without using harsh pesticides, instead making use of other insects and "predators" that are strategically placed to ensure everything is in balance and the plants are safe. Welliver went onstage towards the end of the day, to truly remind the women in attendance the wonders of being themselves, and to remind them that "It doesnt matter what happened, you can always change tomorrow." Welliver was the winner of Global's woman of vision award this month for her ideas and public speaking even in the way of difficulty due to her speech impediments that followed her from being a young child into her adult life. Another key component of her speech was the idea of photoshop, and what power it really holds when it comes to

Letter to the editor

Fix the revenue problem and there would be no need to cut public services The recent Conservative 2013 provincial budget will have many serious negative impacts for ordinary Albertans, while wealthy individuals, large businesses, and multinational foreign corporations involved in the energy sector continue to laugh all the way to the bank. The impacts on ordinary Albertans which I most worry about are: 1. There is no increased funding to operational costs of kindergarten to grade twelve education. We know that schools are already stressed with large classrooms and lack of resources. Alberta’s population is increasing by 100,000 per year - therefore this budget actually imposes further cuts to Alberta’s children, which will increase class sizes even more, deplete needed resources, and ultimately reduce the overall quali-

ty of education. What good are fifty new schools if there is no funding for new teachers? 2. The Ministry of Health is only getting a 3% increase in funding which does not keep pace with inflation and population growth. Mental health and other essential services are already inadequate. Emergency rooms are dangerously overcrowded because of a lack of acute care beds partially caused by too many acute care beds being occupied by the elderly waiting for transfer to long term care beds. Sadly, there are no funds for additional long term care beds in this budget. It is deplorable that essential health services for Albertans will continue to decline as a direct result of inadequate funding. 3. Heavy cuts to postsecondary education will

Michelle Pinon Editor

result in even fewer young adults being able to get into and afford programs to give them the skills required to successfully enter the work force. Why should Albertans be facing cuts to public services when we’ve had years of economic growth in this province? Alberta does not have a spending problem. The reality is that we have a revenue problem. This government has allowed the rich (individuals and large corporations) to not pay their fair share of taxes. This government has allowed foreign multi-national corporations to steal our natural resources through totally inadequate royalty payments. The revenue problem can easily be fixed by: 1. Increasing royalties on Alberta’s natural resources. After all, these resources belong to Albertans.

Jodie TracyDerksen Harding Ad Sales Office Manager/ Ad Composition

2. Eliminating the flat tax and bringing back a fair, progressive tax system which will bring in billions of dollars each year. It is a myth that the flat tax benefits the middle class - it only benefits the wealthy. The wealthy need to pay their fair share of taxes so that education, health and social programs can be adequately funded for the benefit of all. 3. Making large corporations pay their fair share of taxes they can easily afford to. 4. Closing loopholes and tax havens for the rich, resulting in billions of dollars for public spending. I urge you to think about the implications of this budget for your family and how the revenue problem could be fixed. Then let your MLA and Premier know how you feel. Pat Spady

OBITUARY Mary Kowalyk Nygren December 19, 1923 – March 11, 2013 Our gracious, kind and loving Mary passed away peacefully in Lamont Hospital with family by her side. She was a daughter, a sister, a wife, a mother, an aunt, a grandmother and a great grandmother. Her family was central to her life and she never forgot a birthday or anniversary. A gracious host, there was always room for one more and no one ever left her table hungry. A hard worker, she made sure to find time in the day for gardening and reading and keeping her cookie jar full of her famous chocolate chip cookies. Family and friends will remember her each time they are warmed by a quilt and afghan made by her hands. In her senior years she enjoyed helping at the Chipman Golden Seniors Club and was involved in her church. Mary was born in the Ukraine and immigrated to a farm near Wadena, Saskatchewan at the age of 4. As a

young woman she worked at the Wadena hospital as an X-Ray technician. Here she met and later married Loran Nygren, her husband of 50 years. Together with their four boys they moved from Saskatchewan to BC where they owned and operated the Canyon

Creek Store at Nicholson for many years. During these years Loran and Mary kept close contact with family back in Saskatchewan. After Loran’s passing she moved to Chipman in 2002, where she resided until her death. Mary was pre deceased by her loving

husband, Loran Nygren, her parents, Nickolas and Katharine Kowalyk, her sister Anne Kowalyk Kanigan and her brother Luke Kowalyk. She is lovingly remembered by her sons Arden (Irma) of Victoria, Ronald (Toni) of Chipman, Carl Bradley (Enola) of Innisfail and Edward of Vancouver.

She had nine grandchildren, Amanda, Adam, Matthew, Terah, Kjell, Nova, Ryan, Nick and Luke and two great grandchildren, Kay-Lee and Addison. She is also survived by her sister-inlaw Benita Josephson and brothers in law, Royce Nygren, Don Nygren, Dennis Nygren, and Nick Kanigan, father

of her two special nieces, Carol and Kathy along with numerous other nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice. A memorial service will be held at Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta at a later date.
