Lamont’s Lena Ostashek celebrates 100 years Michelle Pinon Editor

Queen Elizabeth II, Prime Minister Stephen Harper, and Premier Alison Redford, were several of the dignitaries who sent greetings to 'Matushka' Lena Ostashek's for her 100th birthday; but the most personal well wishes came from her daughter Olga, and three sons Melvin, Nick, and Robert during her celebration at Sachava St. Michael's Orthodox Church near Andrew on Sept.30th. Lena's children’s voices resonated with pride and love as they described their mother and what she meant to each of them, and how blessed they were to have her as their mother, who had reached such a remarkable milestone. It was impossible for them to hold back tears as they poured out their thoughts and emotions to a crowd of nearly 100 people who had gathered for the historic occasion. Youngest son Robert noted that it is quite uncommon for someone to reach the age of 100 years. Born to Ryifta and Vasil Ungeran in Wasel on Oct. 1, 1912; Lena was the sixth of seven children. She was baptised in Wasel church, and Father Gerofski Power smiled and said that during the last service that was held at Wasel church was a baptism as well. Even though age in our modern day is considered a curse; Father Power said age is indeed a special blessing and gift, and how blessed they were to have Lena here to share her love, teachings and spread her wisdom. "If not for them (elders) we would lack a great deal, and lose connecting between different generations." Power went on to say: "You have been given the gift of a very good long life. We are here to give thanks to God. You are a blessing and gift from the Lord, and we give thanks and wish you many more blessed years because through you God has blessed us." Robert touched on the fact his mother was born in 1912 when the province itself was only seven-yearsold at the time. Gas was seven cents, and Wasel church was built that year. "That quaint little church has held many special memories over the years." While Lena and her husband William, who became a priest in 1968, weathered hardships; there were many happy times they shared. While Lena sometimes questions why she is still here, Robert said that's because her work here on earth is not done yet. He said there would be more tasks in the future, but joked that they may be a little lighter than in the past. Lena's son Melvin, while he had many sheets of

paper in his hand, decided to "wing it" for his speech, and spent several minutes acknowledging all of the people who had contributed to the ceremony and celebration as well as family members and friends, some who travelled considerble distance to attend the s p e c i a l event, as well as members of the church for allowing them to hold the celebration there. Melvin said it was Lena Ostashek with Father Power, receiving a special blessing on the centennial of her birth. "unbelievable" to fathom 100 is the hardest job of my life." But she quickly thanked years. While he has only known his mom for 67 the priest, her loving children, and everyone for years, he hope there would be many more years to attending the celebration. "I don't think I deserve it, share together in the future. but thank you...I've enjoyed this day immensely."
