The Birdmen shooting new footage in Alberta

Dennis Isbister, host of The Birdmen, a popular hunting show on the Sportsman Channel, brought Red Willow youth Byron Dinsmore and his father Pat along on a hunt while filming in the area for his upcoming season. Isbister also named Byron as The Birdmenʼs newest Pro-Staff Future Fowler, and the only Canadian member of that group. Byron and his father Pat, pictured here with Isbister (left), enjoyed the hunts with Isbister and his crew, saying, “They are just awesome people.”

Pat Dinsmore, an experienced hunter himself, also said that “The kids [hunting] with Dennis Isbister are very safe.” The Birdmen crew brought two Nevada youth with them as well, and while in the area, took Byron and two Killam boys out in the field. Isbister who also hosts “Wild Fish, Wild Places,” now in its fourth year of production, says that The Birdmen crew managed to film three months worth of content while they were in East Central Alberta. The Birdmen’s focus on youth makes his visit special for three local boys Leslie Cholowsky The Community Press

One of the Sportsman Channel stars of The Birdmen, Denis Isbister, and his crew, were visiting Killam and area, shooting footage for their upcoming second season, bringing two Nevada youth with them, and inviting some local kids along for the shoot.

Killam’s Chad Bonnett and Bailey Antos went out for an evening’s hunt, and Red Willow native Byron Dinsmore had a few hunts with Isbister.

Isbister’s show is starting its second season this fall, and the focus is on youth, and bird hunting.

Local outfitters Danny and Carolyn VanCleave, friends of Isbister, hunt with him every year he’s been coming to Alberta, about 12, and they are proud of the work he does with youth.

Isbister says, “When I was 21, my friend had a kid with rheumatoid arthritis. He loved to hunt, but had no opportunity to get out.

“When he was 11-years-old, I started taking him out into the marsh. That’s when I started down this path.

“Kids get so much out of it.”

Isbister featured 20 different kids on hunts in his first season.

For those kids who stand out more, Isbister developed the Future Fowlers Pro-Staff.

Isbister says, “The goal of Future Fowlers is to get kids involved, not just on the hunting side of things, but the educational and conservational aspect of the outdoors as well.

“To be a member of the Future Fowlers you have to meet certain criteria: be within a particular age group, have at least a C-average in school, and you must be involved in a minimum of two conservational efforts a year.”

Obviously one of the critera is a love of hunting.

Byron’s father, Pat Dinsmore, accompanied him on his first outing with Isbister, to make sure everything was safe, and said, “The kids with Dennis Isbister are very safe,” adding, “they are just awesome people.”

Dinsmore said Byron turned 12 last year and went hunting with him on about 15 hunts in all, and was really excited to be asked along with Isbister.

Dinsmore was surprised and very pleased, but not more than Byron himself, when at the end of their hunts, Isbister named him as a Future Fowler, the newest member, and only Canadian, to that list.

“I don’t think Byron realizes how many doors just opened for him,” Dinsmore says.

Isbister says that a recent report he caught on USA Today says that getting youth involved in hunting seems to be working, with significant growth in the number of women and girls hunting as well.

“We’ve taken so many kids who wanted to try it,” he says, “and some who have really taken to it.”

“The show’s focus is not just on me, it’s on the kids.”

Isbister works with Delta Waterfowl, and Ducks Unlimited, and is serious

about his Future Fowlers giving something back.

“One of the first shows we did featured a banding segment with a local biologist, we had kids helping to band ducks, and taught them why it’s so important.”

“Our Future Fowlers need to find out how they can volunteer locally.

“We teach kids and adults to become environmentally aware, it’s more than just about harvesting the birds, hunting is about being good stewards of the land and our natural resources.”

“Hunters are environmentalists to the nth degree,” Isbister said, “We’re the ones out in the middle of it.”

Isbister plans to return to Alberta, and he encourages local kids to find him on Facebook under The Birdmen, and send him a message if they might be interested in coming along on a hunt next year.

“Where I’m from, hunting is very gear-intensive, and very expensive, so if I can help kids take an interest by taking them along when they otherwise couldn’t afford to, I love it,” Isbister says.

During the last shoot that the Dinsmores participated in with Isbister, they took out only 24 decoys, and Isbister said, “We had a fantastic time with just a little bit of gear.”

The Birdmen crew travelled throughout the area, near Wavy Lake, Donalda, Rosalind, Bellshill, near Killam, and near Forestburg.

Their last shoot was in an area of rolling hills, on a foggy morning, and Dinsmore said, “People dream about hunts like that, with the weather and the scenery,” He added, “There are two words to sum up duck hunting; passion, and bonding.”

Many of today's tech savvy hunters resort to the help of a game camera when seeking out and patterning the behaviours of wild animals.

The days of tramping around in the bushes for weeks in search of deer and moose have nearly come to an end.

With the help of a

digital camera, mounted on either a tree or post, the hunt can be reduced to mere hours.

These cameras vary by model, and can capture images with or without a flash at all times of the day and night.

When the camera is in place, its motion sensor is triggered when an animal passes by.

Depending on the

model, the camera can take a series of pictures or video, recording the date and time the animal passed by.

The information is then stored on a memory card for the hunter to review later.

Although these cameras are mainly purchased by hunting fanatics, many people buy them for the sole purpose of filming wild animals in their natural habitat.

Sherwood Park Fish and Game Association Home for the conservation-minded shooter

The sign at the entrance way calls the Sherwood Park Fish and Game Association’s recreation area a “home for the conservationminded shooter.”

That is what President Pat Harris emphasizes while conducting a sightseeing tour of the 720acre facility, which currently has a capped membership of 3,400.

“We’re here primarily for safety first, then shooting,” says Harris, explaining that no shooting is allowed except on specific ranges set out for that purpose. The conservation is in the form of a 160 acres set aside in perpetuity for habitat under an agreement with the Nature Conservancy of Canada.

The rules are very tight in that no guests are allowed at the range.

“You have to be a member to shoot here because of the insurance policy,” says Harris.

“And all new members have to go through a range safety orientation.

“We are very safety conscious,” he said, noting there is a mandatory sign-in at the gate.

The gate posts the shooting range hours which are dependent upon the hours of available daylight.

At the Big Bore Range for rifles over .22-calibre, Robert Adamson from Antler Lake calls a cease fire to pick up targets. A curtain drops over the front of the firing range and no one is allowed to go past the cease fire line or shoot their firearms, which remain on the benches.

Adamson states that someone needs to be on safety watch at all times.

The first person on a particular shooting range is the range officer in charge of safety.

Once the curtain goes up signalling that shooting can begin, shooters can aim at paper targets on backboards ranging in distance from 100 metres, 200 metres and 300 metres away. The only other target they are allowed to shoot at is the gong target located to the right side of the targets.

Harris is a Canadian Firearms Safety Course instructor and retired school teacher. He has also been named Hunter Education Instructor of the Year and is proud of his club’s safety record.

“We’re used as a safety standard for other places,” he said. “Every range (in the club) gets a high rating all the time,” by the federal government’s Chief Firearms Officer.

A big part of the safety is having berms to stop the bullets. The berms range from 15 ft. to 30 ft. high.

Each shooting range has large signs with the general range rules laid out for shooters to follow, and the times within which shooting is allowed posted on the gate, which coincides with sunrise and sunset.

“We do have video surveillance and everybody wears a green card with membership number and whether they are a range member or regular member.”

Four police detachments use the firing range and can set up their own fire lines as well as have their own range officers.

That particular day, a large group were located at the Big Bore Overflow Range, shooting semiautomatic assault rifles.

Harris said only the police are allowed to use the human silhouette targets.

“This is one of the last outdoor ranges,” he said,

that the police can utilize for tactical training. “It’s the only way the police can learn how to use all those firearms.”

In fact, the Sherwood Park Fish and Game Association is the biggest fish and game association in Alberta. It was originally formed in 1968 and moved to its present site in Beaver County southwest of Tofield in 1974.

Other features at the club include a trap range for shooting clay pigeons.

Harris said the animals are so used to the sound of gunfire they don’t run away. He gives the example of a moose that stood still and watched five men shooting clay pigeons at the trap range.

The club also has an archery range, plus an archery trail with 3D targets. A bow shooting platform allows bow hunters to aim for a bull’s eye strategically placed in the bush below.

But there is more to this recreation area than simply shooting targets. The local Junior Forest Wardens, Girl Guides and Boy Scouts come out to use the clubhouse for activities.

“They come out for free because we think it is very important,” said Harris,
