Nadine Skitsko eyes well up with tears as she admits that just thinking about Markus Wendorff’s accident makes her tearful. Nadine, along with her son Shanon, were among 22 other people who donated blood this past Saturday in honour of Markus, a St. Michael area farmer who was badly burned in an explosion recently. “It’s an honour to be able to do something helpful,” stated Nadine, during her snack break following the donation, which was made at the Redwater & District Pioneer Club.

Friends and neighbours as well as other concerned and caring residents from the district rolled up their sleeves to help Markus, who has received more than 100 pints of blood since his accident which happened just over a month ago. While the road to recovery will be a long and painful one for Markus, who had more than 70 per cent of his body covered in burns, Nadine is very hopeful about the situation. “There’s so much positive energy going out to him.” Many of the donors, who didn’t want to have their names published or photographs taken, said they came to the clinic to do what they could to help him and his family out. “We didn’t do it for the recognition. We did it for love of the family,” said one of the volunteers who wanted to remain anonymous.

Another donor said they read about the blood clinic in The Lamont Leader and saw the words Markus’ wife Angela had spoken, and were moved to tears. “We’re helping a fellow neighbour and farmer,” stated the donor before quickly departing. Janine Whiting, who grew up in the neighbourhood, said she wanted to do anything she could to help them out. “We want to do what we can to support Markus and give him our prayers,” before being called away to make her donation. While it is a very difficult and trying time for the Wendorff’s; the outpouring of support could very well make all the difference in the long run. It’s not everyday you can help save a life, and these donors are proof positive that great things can happen when they come together for a single purpose.
