Local residents travel to Redwater to donate blood in honour of Markus Wendorff
MICHELLE PINON PHOTO
Lamont resident and firefighter Rick Duiker was one of 23 people who donated blood in honour of Markus Wendorff Saturday, Sept. 7 at the Canadian Blood Services donor clinic at the Redwater & District Pioneer Club. The clinic was hosted by volunteer members of the ladies hospital auxiliary. Michelle Pinon Editor
Nadine Skitsko eyes well up with tears as she admits that just thinking about Markus Wendorff’s accident makes her tearful. Nadine, along with her son Shanon, were among 22 other people who donated blood this past Saturday in honour of Markus, a St. Michael area farmer who was badly burned in an explosion recently. “It’s an honour to be able to do something helpful,” stated Nadine, during her snack break following the donation, which was made at the Redwater & District Pioneer Club.
Friends and neighbours as well as other concerned and caring residents from the district rolled up their sleeves to help Markus, who has received more than 100 pints of blood since his accident which happened just over a month ago. While the road to recovery will be a long and painful one for Markus, who had more than 70 per cent of his body covered in burns, Nadine is very hopeful about the situation. “There’s so much positive energy going out to him.” Many of the donors, who didn’t want to have their names published or photographs taken, said they came to the clinic to do what they could to help him and his family out. “We didn’t do it for the recognition. We did it for love of the family,” said one of the volunteers who wanted to remain anonymous.
Another donor said they read about the blood clinic in The Lamont Leader and saw the words Markus’ wife Angela had spoken, and were moved to tears. “We’re helping a fellow neighbour and farmer,” stated the donor before quickly departing. Janine Whiting, who grew up in the neighbourhood, said she wanted to do anything she could to help them out. “We want to do what we can to support Markus and give him our prayers,” before being called away to make her donation. While it is a very difficult and trying time for the Wendorff’s; the outpouring of support could very well make all the difference in the long run. It’s not everyday you can help save a life, and these donors are proof positive that great things can happen when they come together for a single purpose.

Back lanes in Lamont receive upgrade
MICHELLE PINON PHOTOS
Employees with Raiders Construction (pictured below) were back on the job Saturday morning in the back lane west of Secondary Highway 831. A final grading is expected to be completed next week. The company also began reconstruction of the back ally in the Campbell subdivision last week and will continue working in the area for the next week or two. Lamont town council awarded the tender for the projects to Raiders Construction at its July 23 meeting. Michelle Pinon Editor
Crews with Raiders Constructionhave been working in the Town of Lamont these past couple of weeks. Town foreman Richard Chernyk confirmed they were just finishing up reconstruction in the back lane west of Secondary Highway 831 (Duke Drive) this past Friday. A final grading has yet
to be completed, but Sandi Maschmeyer, acting chief administrative offier said the lane, which was once paved, will not be repaved. Crews have now moved onto the back lane between 46 and 47 Street in Campbell subdivision. Work is expected to be completed sometime this week weather permitting, added Maschmeyer. N i k i f o r u k Construction will be
installing water and sewer lines across Highway 15 beginning this week as well. All of the projects were approved in this year’s capital budget with an estimated cost of just over $3 million. The lagoon was also on the list of capital projects, but has not proceeded as the town is still in negotiations with Ducks Unlimited.

Board of Trustees chair Barb McNeill (holding plaque) was presented with the Environmental Stewardship Award by Catherine Sheehy, (standing to the left of McNeill), program manager with UL Environment, during the Aug. 29 board meeting in Sherwood Park. Fellow trustees and employees also pose for a photograph following the presentation at EIPS headquarters. Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) is the 2013 recipient of the Environmental Stewardship Award for its Green Cleaning Initiative and commitment to environmental responsibility. Avmor, Canada’s leading provider of professional cleaning solutions and environmentally preferable cleaning products certified by EcoLog, nominates organizations for the Environmental Stewardship Award in recognition of their commitment to environmental protection through greener procurement decisions. The award was presented by UL Environment, the owner of the EcoLogo Program, on August 29. “We congratulate Elk Island Public Schools Board, Superintendent, and Facility Services staff for bringing their commitment to the health and safety of students and staff into their purchasing practices, said Catherine Sheehy, Program Manager with UL Environment. “By using EcoLogo certified cleaning products, EIPS is reducing exposure to harsh chemical cleaners that can aggravate serious health issues such as asthma. Sheehy presented the Environmental Stewardship Award to
Barb McNeill, Chair of the EIPS Board of Trustees, at the August 29 Board Meeting. “I am honoured to accept this award and recognition on behalf of all of our students and staff, as we have all been part of our division’s greening efforts, said McNeill. “We are proud of our comprehensive Green Cleaning Program and we know our staff, students, and families appreciate that Elk Island Public Schools is doing something positive for them and for the environment. This award inspires us to continue to work hard to educate ourselves about what it means to be good stewards of our
natural environment, and then, have the courage to take a stand to do something about it, added McNeill. Among those in attendance for the award presentation were Bruce Beliveau, Superintendent of Schools, and Basil David, Director of Facility Services. Also in attendance was Darcie Bennett, Foreman of Contract Services who spearheaded the Green Cleaning Initiative for the division. EIPS chose Avmor as its green cleaning solutions provider after trialing Avmor products in several schools.

Working together key to building relationships Recently, I read someone’s thoughts about the Town of Bruderheim in a local paper. (Not the Lamont Leader.) Here are my thoughts. The Town of Bruderheim & the Bruderheim AG Society has never had a better working relationship, in fact it was publicly stated, twice, during the recent AG Days in Bruderheim that the Town of Bruderheim is very thankful for all the hard work over the years in Bruderheim by the AG Society. Thankful as well for the current Bruderheim AG Society President Wayne Schoepp & his son Cody, also Vic Schneider and all of the hard working volunteers, who were also very publicly thanked for all they did that weekend in Bruderheim. Further to the kudos, at the Smash’n Bash event in Bruderheim, earlier this summer, the same sentiments were expressed again praising the Bruderheim AG Society, especially Cody Schoepp for all his hard work work and commitment to make that exciting new event a great success. How do I know this, because I was the one who expressed these very public statements. We in Bruderheim are all looking forward, to working even closer with the Bruderheim AG Society in the future, as evidenced by the relatively recent, signed long term agreement the Bruderheim AG Society has with the Town of Bruderheim for the Bruderheim AG Grounds. Very good news for both parties. Working together we will be successful, it is easy to try to rip and tear at the “good stuff” in life, it can be tougher to build relationships up, but certainly way more fulfilling. Building up relationships, so we can all be successful is our goal. Thanks for your time. Town of Bruderheim - Mayor Karl Hauch.

Resident berates Town of Lamont for downgrade Some 30 years ago the Town of Lamont made a decision to pave the lane on the west side of 831 through town. One of the major reasons cited was to provide a walking surface for children going to school as there was no sidewalk on 831 nor could one be built. A local improvement levy was assessed to all property owners bordering the lane. For 20 years we paid for the pavement. Fast forward to 2013. In July I spoke to a member of town council whose property also borders this lane. I was concerned about a number of potholes on the lane and that drivers were now driving on the grassed areas to avoid them. At that time I was advised that the lane was going to be "REPAVED" this summer. I was satisfied with that. Upon returning from vacation August 20 we found the lane full of equipment and that it was being dug up. Progress I thought, but I knew that Raiders, the contractor, was not a paving company. To my dismay I learned that the lane was in fact NOT going to be repaved. The pavement was to be dug up and replaced with a gravel surface. What happened? Did the school close? The children go away? How can the lane warrant paving, have the residents pay
Kerry Anderson Publisher

for it, and then, when it needs repair, rip it up and replace it with gravel. One of the reasons the lane surface came to be in such a state was the Town's lack of maintenance on it. Crack filling was seldom done and pothole repair was not a priority. There is also far too much traffic on it, including heavy trucks. I can't understand why the residents who paid for this lane were not consulted. The surface was still usable if the potholes were repaired. It makes no sense but that seems to be the way this town is going. If you look around there are a few streets with gravel patches on them. In the future maybe all the roads in town will become gravel. For example 53rd street to the hospital, probably one of the most used roads in town, has a large gravel patch for well over a year now. I'm waiting for the first good rain to see what this lane looks like. It will be one big rutted up mess. Then who is going to regrade it? Nick Plooy Lamont, AB

Lamont’s 2013 Terry Fox Run to be held in faithful supporter Len Siracky’s honour Michelle Pinon Editor
Sept. 15 will be a special day for the Siracky family. That is the day of the Terry Fox Run, and the 2013 edition in Lamont will be held in Siracky’s honour. A cancer survivor several times over, Len and his family became strong supporters of the annual fundraising event. In 2004 with a suggestion from daughter Carmen, Len and Toni became participant supporters of the Terry Fox Run in Lamont and later it became a family tradition with other members of the family joining in. One year, having collected pledges, Len was hospitalized at the University Hospital. How proud he was to walk through the corridors, wearing his Terry Fox t-shirt. On April 13, 2013 after a third bout of pneumo-
nia, Len gave up the fight and went to be with Jesus. Family members can’t thank Our Lady of Lourdes Star Knights of Columbus Council for dedicating this year’s run in remembrance of Len. Registration will be held at the Lamont Recreation Centre meeting room at 12 Noon with the run beginning shortly after 1 p.m. says co-ordinator Shanon Skitsko. This will be the first time Skitsko will be organizing the local run. While he is a bit nervous about taking care of all the details, he is also calm knowing that many local volunteers and supporters will be helping right alongside him. For the past 25 years, local people have contributed thousands of dollars for the Terry Fox Foundation. This year’s theme is: “Working together to
outrun cancer,” and Skitsko says it’s very appropriate as support-
ers of Terry and his dream continue to follow in his footsteps to find a
cure. Another Canadian icon, Olympic Champion

swimmer Mark Tewksbury, is this year’s spokesperson for the Calgary Terry Fox Run. Tewksbury has been recognized for his achievements in sport, public speaking and humanitarianism. As a Canadian, world class athlete, and son who lost his father to cancer at the age of 30, he is the ideal person to lead the way. The Terry Fox Research Institute and its scientists have been working behind the scenes for more than 30 years. Every year more than $20 million in discovery based research is conducted in Canada. Not only does the institute raise money for research, but it also continues to share the story of Terry Fox and his heroic efforts. To date, more than $600 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research in Terry’s name.
Local organizers ready for 26th annual Terry Fox Run Sunday, September 15th, marks the 33rd annual Terry Fox Run for cancer research. It also will be the 26th year of participation by the residents of the Town of Lamont and area, coordinated by the Knights of Columbus Councili #6382. Every year the Terry Fox Foundation issues an official T-shirt. These shirts sell for $20 and for a number of years we have been asking local business people to purchase one and donate it along with a business card back to the event. In lieu of these purchases, all donations of food items or gifts are welcomed, noteworthy, and appreciated by organizers and participants. As was the case last year, the owners of the local businesses are once again coming together to make the job of canvassing most pleasant. My Mom, Nadine Skitsko is helping with the canvassing again while I drive school bus and
help my Dad farm. Nadine is always so excited about how the community is coming together and how generous the people are, even having their cheques and sponsorships ready before she has dropped off the canvasing letter! For instance, Dorothy Saleski from the Lamont Dental Clinic commented “I have a cheque ready, we knew you were coming.” Dennis McCartney brought his Fort Veterinary Clinic cheque over to the house. Business people who were struggling last year and could only donate a little, joyously comment that this year they can do more. WOW, what community spirit. And as of this interview date, with more than a week until Run Day, we still have businesses to contact. We ’ v e also expanded the canvassing area to include more businesses in other towns (Chipman,
Mundare, Bruderheim, and Andrew with an outpouring of generosity, sponsorship and welcome. People are calling to ask what we need and offering to fill those needs. We even have vendors from the Ross Creek Market offering donations and gift items. It’s evident that no one wants to be left out. And from Redwater, Sandra at the Red Apple store remembers when Terry Fox stopped at their school during his marathon and how the students sang for him. She will proudly wear her 2013 Terry Fox Tshirt ñ not only on Terry Fox Run Day but on other days as well. So will Sherri and the rest of the Red Apple associates, as they show a solid commitment to the Marathon of Hope. This year we have added “I AM RUNNING FOR ____________” stickers. We would ask participants to think
about whom they are running for and share their stories on Run Day. Even those sponsoring the runners have their stories to share. Two of my very good friends from the Ukrainian Men’s Choir of Edmonton died of cancer and I am honoured to Co-ordinate this
year’s run, as a continuation of The Marathon of Hope started by Terry Fox. Maybe, just maybe, the donations this year could make that all important difference for a breakthrough cancer cure! Last year we had 40 participants and this
year we hope to see a 20% or better participant increase. Finally, I have to thank Nadine Skitsko for helping me put these thoughts together.

Fundraiser for King family nets more than $900 Michelle Pinon Editor
There’s no better feeling than to help people in need. Christine Moore and her family were feeling very excited and happy to have organized a two day garage sale this past Friday and Saturday for members of the King family who recently lost their home and pets in a house fire. “We raised $911,” shouted Moore, who tabulated the proceeds late Saturday afternoon. “I didn’t think we
raised that much money, but we did!” She also couldn’t wait to share the good news with her husband Darold, who was away working at the time of the fundraiser. “It was his idea,” explained Moore. Darold was the one who thought a garage sale might be the best way to raise funds for the King family. How the idea came to fruition began when Christine went into the Town of Bruderheim office. “We started talking and thought we should do something for them.” They tossed around the idea of a supper and silent auction, but knew it might be too onerous on volunteers who had just spent many hours working at the Heartland Ag. Days. Then they thought about canvassing door to door, but felt that might be too problematic. That’s when Darold suggested the garage sale fundraiser. The Moore’s are so grateful for the support of community members and garage sale participants who pitched in to help out the King’s. In addition to the garage sale, community members also established a trust fund in the family’s name through the Alberta Treasury Branch. So many hands are helping to turn a tragic event into a positive new beginning for the King family.

He, along with fellow members will be selling the ever popular "Fire Within" calendars. While he hasn't earmarked the number of calendars they'd like to sell, he hopes they are sold out over the course of the two day event. Duiker is also excited to have the fire prevention trailer on site during the weekend as well as Sparky the dog, the department's mascot. As well, drag racing and muscle cars will be on display courtesy of ASB Racing. There will also be plenty of activities in the kid's fun zone including a bouncy castle that will keep the kids moving for hours. The event will go from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday and from 8 a.m. to 12 Noon on Sunday.

10 - The Lamont Leader (Lamont, Alberta), Tuesday, September 10, 2013
Crime spree ended with help of the public Shortly after 8:30 am on Saturday September 7, 2013 Vegreville RCMP were notified of a break and enter to the Vegreville Ford dealership which had occurred the previous night. Investigation revealed that a customer's F350 truck had been stolen from the yard and had smashed through a fence to escape. Later that morning RCMP began to get complaints of burglar alarms, damaged property, break-ins and thefts in the rural area north of Mundare, Alberta. Residents of the area reported seeing a truck matching the description of the one stolen from the dealership driving erratically in the area. While making patrols in the vicinity police were able to locate the truck as described which wouldn't stop when police tried to pull it over. A brief chase ensued in which the truck drove through fields, bushes and fences in attempt to evade police. Residents of the area called in with sightings of the truck as it drove erratically away from police. While helicopter and police service dog support were on its way police were contacted by one area resident who advised that he had witnessed the truck speed past him, recognized the truck as he knew the owner and was told earlier that it had been stolen. The citizen assisted in directing RCMP to a location where the truck had stopped, the driver had been seen taking property out of the truck and hiding it in a nearby farm yard near Andrew, Alberta. RCMP from Vegreville and Two Hills detachments converged on the location where the suspect then took off running across a field. The area was surrounded and the suspect was arrested a short while later with the assistance of RCMP police dog services. A search of the vehicle resulted in extensive damages to the exterior, but also property which had been stolen from at least 3 different rural residences was located inside. Items recovered from inside the truck ranged from
jewelry, electronics, tools to air rifles and cowboy hats all taken during thefts. Cst Curtis HARSULLA of the Vegreville RCMP says, " Had it not been for the keen eye and quick thinking of the good samaritan who recognized the truck and called police, apprehending the suspect would have been very difficult. It was clear that the suspect did not want to stop for police and was driving very dangerously to try and get away." 28 year old Cody KETSA of Edmonton faces over 14 charges which include flight from police, numerous break and enters, thefts, driving while suspended among others. He makes his first appearance in Vegreville Provincial Court on Monday September 9, 2013. During the investigation an ATV was recovered which at one point was seen in the back of the stolen truck and is also believed to have been stolen. If you recognize the ATV in the attached photo please contact Vegreville RCMP at 780-6322223. RCMP would like to remind rural residents to be a good neighbour, keep an eye on one another's property and report any suspicious activity to police.

They say that time heals all sorrow And that it helps us to forget But time so far has only shown How much we miss you yet
One year ago Calm and peaceful he is sleeping, Sweetest rest that follows pain, We who loved him sadly miss him, But trust in God to meet again, His weary hours and days of pain, His troubled nights are past, And in our aching hearts we know, He has found sweet rest at last His charming ways and smiling face are a pleasure to recall, He had a kindly word for each and died beloved of all. Nothing can ever take away the love a heart holds dear, Fond memories linger every day, Remembrance keeps him near. But some sweet day we’ll meet again, Beyond the toil and strife, and clasp each others hand once more, In Heaven, that happy life. Lessons of the past and present come together during Harvest FestiMichelle Pinon Editor
Even the whirring sounds of traffic on Highway 16 couldn't drown out the lively music coming from an accordian player at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village (UCHV) late Sunday morning. Then comes the familiar clickety-clack of horses hooves behind me as I walk down the road. The farmer stops further down the road and I catch up to hear him telling the story of the Percherons, powerful draft horses which originated in France, and were brought over to Canada. Walking past lush gardens and stooks of grain I stop in the Pylpow home where they are making sour cabbage before heading over to the Hawreliak home where they are canning cucumbers to make into dill pickles. I walk by a family taking photos before entering the
Yurko home where they are stripping the feathers to make quilts and pillow to keep warm in the winter. The Demchuk Blacksmith Shop is busy, and teams of horses wait patiently to load and unload visitors near that location. Then it's time to head to the visitor reception area where vendors are selling their handcrafted and homemade wares. I sit down long enough to hear members of Silver & Gold (Mundare resident Charlie Gargus, and Vegreville couple Bob and Madeline Ashmead) performing in the courtyard. Talk of lunch makes me realize how hungry I am, so I eagerly have a heritage plate before entering the Red Barn where there are woodcarvers, genealogists, and artistic renderings depicting the Ukrainian way of life to take in. Back down the road I decide to take a detour to the "Good King's House"
(Russia School) where the teacher is working on his lesson plan. With a small gathering of visitors he decides to let class in. He orders a visitor to take their hat off while others head to their seats. Boys are instructed to sit on the right and the girls on the left, before the teacher goes over the rules. He is to be addressed as sir and if a student has a question they must raise their right hand before giving them permission to speak. All conversation must be spoken in English. After a nerve-racking hygene inspection, the teacher gets into the spelling lesson. There are many funny moments during class to entertain and educate young and old alike. Then it's time to head to the field where volunteers are enjoying a bite to eat before going back to work. I overhear a couple of visitors remarking about the threshing equipment
and what they used on their farms before Bruce McGregor gets into his speech. McGregor, who is the UCHV farm program coordinator, begins by thanking the volunteers, around 25 in total, who came out make Harvest Day a huge success. Visitors were encouraged to take a sample of

THANK YOU
I would like to thank the guys who helped me get into my truck after my accident and also to Dr. Potgieter and the nursing staff who took good care of me. Thanks too for all the phone calls, cards, visits and everyone who brought food to the house. And also thanks to Dr. Kumar who performed surgery to my knee and to the nursing staff at St. Mary’s hospital in Camrose. A special thanks to my daughter, Lorraine, who did all the cooking when I had company and my husband, Fred, who had a lot of patience with me and who did all my gardening for me. And, I did not have a broken leg, I had a badly injured knee. Thank you all and may God bless you all!
