Terry Fox legacy continues to live in the hearts of Lamont and area residents Locals celebrate 25th anniversary in community by raising $10,943 Michelle Pinon Editor “Thank you for making a difference and keeping Terry’s dream alive.” Those were the words brother Fred Fox wrote on one of the Terry Fox Run posters he gave to organizers of the Lamont event following a special banquet this past

Wednesday. The heartfelt words of encouragement held special meaning to coorganizer Mike Klita, who attended the gala with Deb Dunsmore, who has her own personal connection to the Fox family. Dunsmore, who lived in the same subdivision as the Fox family, met Fred’s wife Teresa at the Maple Ridge Golden

Seniors Curling Club. Both were young mothers at the time. While Deb knew Teresa’s brother-in-law had passed away, it wasn’t until years later she made the connection when she went to visit their home and saw a portrait of Terry in the foyer. “I was telling Mike about the connection, and he invited me to

come to the gala which she described as an intimate affair, and one where several young women spoke passionately about Terry Fox and the legacy that has carried on for more than 30 years. “It was good to see Fred and reminisce again,” added Deb. Sept. 16th marked the 32nd annual Terry Fox Run, and marked the 25th year Lamont has participated in the event

which nows spans the globe. “It’s truly a community event,” stated Nadine Skitsko, who helped canvas local businesses for support of her son and co-organizer Shanon, who was out on the combine this past week. “I ran around town pretending to be Shanon,” joked Nadine, who was very moved by the support she received. “The most important thing is how the community came together,” added Nadine, who was moved by the generous outpouring of support. “It just brings tears to your eyes.” Deb, who moved to Lamont three years ago with her husband Mic, has nothing but admiration for Terry Fox, and his family, pointing out that it was Betty Fox who set up the non-profit foundation, which is entirely dedicated to cancer research. “She (Betty) wanted to keep her son’s dream alive.” So has Deb, and many other Lamont and area residents, for the past 25 years. “We’ve kept his legacy alive all by volunteer donations,” added Mike proudly, before participants embarked on the run shortly after 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
