The Elk Island Wrap Up and Charity Tournament was a huge success with 30 golfers strong out on the links Sept. 22 at the Elk Island Golf Course. With temperatures around plus 25 degrees, it definitely felt like a hot summer’s day. Ready to finish off her last putt on hole number nine was Sandi Maschmeyer, while councillor Steve Sharun, second from left, administrator Betty Malica, and Dwayne Konsorada look on. The Town of Lamont team, was one of several who raised their clubs in support of local charities, including: Lamont Figure Skating Club, Lamont Play School, and Lamont Veselka Dancers who will each receive around $400 in proceeds. The event was spearheaded and organized by Doug Pewarchuk.

Three local residents receive Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal Michelle Pinon Editor

Vegreville-Wainwright MP Leon Benoit had the privilege of hosting ceremonies in Vegreville to honour 30 constituents by awarding them with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal. The local recipients of the honour were Bruderheim area residents Laura Kupsch and Doug Maschmeyer as well as Mundare resident Debby Gargus. “This commemorative medal is a way for Canadians to honour Her Majesty as we celebrate the 60th anniversary of her accession to

the throne as Queen of Canada, and to recognize a select group of hard working Canadians who had made and continue to make extraordinary contributions to our communities,”stated Benoit. The longtime MP personally thanked the recipients for a job well done. While Debby Gargus was unable to attend the medal ceremony in person, she did offer a written comment via email from Newfoundland where she was holidaying. “I am very honoured to have been nominated for this prestigious award. I was very surprised when I received the letter

informing me of both the nomination and the fact that I had been chosen as one of the recipients. It is wonderful to be recognized in this way, as contributing to my community has always been important to me.” Doug Maschmeyer felt similar in many respects as Gargus, and said he felt very privileged to receive the medal. “I am honoured that my fellow volunteers value the contribution I had been able to make to the community-locally, provincially, and nationally. Thank you to all the people I’ve touched.” Laura Kupsch’s acceptance speech was only 24 words long, it

was, nevertheless, filled with sincerity. Benoit said during a speech in the House of Commons the previous day that: “Indeed, it is a difficult job to narrow 140 extremely worthy nominations down to just 30 recipients. These are all people who have volunteered a lifetime of dedication and hard work to improving their communities and the lives of their families, neighbours, friends, and often complete strangers. These outstanding citizens are truly the foundation upon which our remarkable country Canada has been built community by community.”
