This month’s editorial comes to you with sadness as I have just learned about the passing of a good friend, Dan “Batman” Quay. Many of you know Dan and his shop the Underground Biker. Dan was on vacation when he was taken with a heart attack. He will be greatly missed by anyone that knew him. I’ll never forget Dan and the good times we had together, that is the way I’ll always remember him. The ride season is officially here, kicked off with the Daytona Bike Week last month. The weather has been totally awesome and I hope that your’e getting a lot of pre-season riding in. Don’t forget to check your bike out after it’s been sitting for the past few months. Especially check the tires and brakes, they keep you safe on the road more than anything. Our advertisers are offering some really great deals to get your started, for both you and your bike. Be sure to check them out and when you stop by their shop or call them, let them know that you saw their ad in the East Coast Biker magazine. Their support allows me to continue keeping you informed. I’m hoping to get a lot more riding in this year so when you see me pull up beside you don’t be surprised when I give you the thumbs up. After all of the rain last summer we’re all hoping for better weather. Now go out and have some fun, attend some poker runs and support some charity rides. First Biker Breakfast of Season Ephrata American Legion open for bikers Story and photos submitted by Wayne “Huffy the Clown” Hoffman
Last year, my riding buddy Rich, my son Jason and I would take our Sunday ride and visit different Biker Breakfast’s and poker runs in the area around where I live. So what better way to start off the 2012 than to make the trip to the first biker breakfast in the area which was in Ephrata, Pennsylvania at the American Legion Post 429. The Cloister Post 429 American Legion hosts a motorcycle show on the first Sunday of each month, this year they started in March and will go through November, serving from 7:00am till noon. You can see thousands of motorcycles on display from concept, classic and cool to one of a kind. They also sell delicious food during the event with a ballroom breakfast buffet open to everyone, burgers at the Sons of Legion tent with cold drinks, coffee and pastries at the Ladies Auxiliary Booth. Stop by and bring the family or organize a ride for your club. Think about no dishes to do. You can have breakfast, a sandwich or just have some coffee and a donut to support the local charities! Then take a trip through the parking lot to see all the bikes and talk to the bikers about their rides. You can see other ways to customize your bike, find out about places to go to get customize work done and gather information about other events coming up. You can easily plan to spend two to three hours at this event. This event is not just for Bikers, you can bring your family and pets too. I must have seen at least six dogs at the breakfast today. I saw a lady named Wanda that strapped her dog in a front loading harness for the ride home (see photo above). While walking around I noticed a crowd by the front door looking at a customized trike made with a VW frame and motor but a Bike front end, it was unique. Char was the owner and rider of this Monster Trike (see photo below). At this time we were there about an hour and decided to go for the all you can eat breakfast. What a deal, it was only $9.00 for all the eggs, bacon, ham, hash browns, baked oatmeal, sausage gravy, toast, muffins and fruit salad you can eat. They had Water, Coffee and Orange drink for your thirst needs. After two trips to the buffet, I was ready to go out and check the new arrival of bikes. When we first arrived the lot was about half full, now it was almost full and more groups were still arriving. I know the fact that the weather was a little cold and some of the information put out had stated that April was the start date may have affected the turn out, but I was impressed with the true bikers that fought the brisk temperature in the 30’s to be a part of the first Biker Breakfast in Ephrata. Nothing makes spring seem closer like riding in warm weather on a February day. When I took my bike off life support on the mild day of February 23rd, I could hardly believe that I was actually going to ride! Winter riding produces an eerie feeling that something is wrong as green memories mix with the stark winter scenery along familiar roads. Sticks frame a yellow grey sky as the winter sun sheds its light on once tree shaded roads. I took only a thirty-mile trip to Brandywine Creek State Park near Wilmington, Delaware from my home in Broomall and I felt that I was in a winter motorcycle dream. But my ride was real and with this mild winter there is the prospect of more riding days to come. The best part of the ride was not having to spend a half-hour washing road salt off the bike since there has been no snow in the area. However, I did have to drive home in blizzard conditions on February 11th after I got off the bus from Hannum’s Harley-Davidson’s trip to the Timonium, Maryland for the Timonium Motorcycle Show. When the bus left Hannum’s at the Chadds Ford dealership at 10:30am snow showers were predicted, but when we arrived at the Maryland State Fairgrounds it was just a gloomy, mild winter day.

I never had a chance to go to the Timonium show in past years, but I could see why the show is a popular way of coping with the winter riding blahs on the east coast. Along with the newest bikes from Harley-Davidson, Indian, Ducati, Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki and Kawasaki (to name a few), dealers had bikes that could be sat on as well as admired. The People’s Choice bike show included some interesting antique bikes like Brady Greco’s ’51 Triumph T-100 and Dave Newit’s ’69 Honda Z-50 and ’78 HD SX-250. Besides the usual vendors, one could have seen Marcus Alvarez who plays Emilio Rivera on “The Son’s of Anarchy”. While deciding to buy a chance on a bike trailer to benefit the American Legion Foundation’s work with vets or Maryland’s Rolling Thunder Chapter’s 2012 HD Ultra to help veterans, visitors could pay to pose with one of the Strip Club Choppers’ ladies or nod to the other models walking around the show.
These clowns spent a lot of time blowing up balloons and handing them out all weekend long.
However, my favorite part of the show was the free swap meet held in another building on the Fairgrounds. Besides displaying an assortment of reasonable parts for any motorcycle, one enterprising vendor was actually working on a bike during the meet. Since vendors set up along with individuals trying to sell parts, I felt like I was at a small bike show. Next winter I will try to make the Timonium show even if I cannot go on a bus trip. The chance to join riders from as far south as Virginia along with the opportunity to see a good selection of new bikes makes the Timonium Motorcycle Show worth having to drive through a blizzard-like snow shower or a possible snowstorm to attend.

The good weather on February 23rd prompted Ed Montgomery, the Hump Ride Captain of Tri-State HOG, to call and emergency “Hump Ride”. The group left the Mc Donald’s near the Granite Run Mall in Media to ride to Cici’s Pizza in Lancaster for lunch. Chapter A of the Gold Wing Road Rider’s Association avoided the weather and held their Eleventh Annual Bowling Challenge Event on February 12th at the Palace Bowling and Entertainment Center in Downingtown. The Chapter with the highest average of all the bowlers and the male and female who bowled the highest and lowest game received certificates. The Keystone Chapter of Women on Wheels met on February 18th to discuss their general plans for the year at Smaltz’s Harley-Davidson in Eagle, Pennsylvania. February was a good month for early rides in the tri-state area.

The 10TH Annual Timonium Motorcycle Show proved once again why it’s considered, by most true motorcycle enthusiasts, to be the number one bike show on the east coast. More than 42,500 motorcycle fanatics passed through the doors during the three day event and were treated to celebrity builders, TV and film stars, Playboy Cover models, a stage packed with hourly, high energy entertainment and the largest sea of paint, chrome, steel and leather ever assembled in the region. Master bike builder Ron Finch headlined The Builder’s Row feature area which was surrounded by the area’s top builders and their hottest new creations like: Mark Brown Studios, Dave from Brunson’s Custom Designs, John from Longo Customs, Roy from C & C Cycle, Ron from Cycle Finish, Frank from Death Row Motorcycles, Jerry from Custom Auto & Cycle, Curt from Kustom Paint and Airbrush, Tim from Eastern Performance Cycles, Jeff from I.C.E. There were more than 275 motorcycles entered the 2012 Custom and Antique Bike Competition from all over the eastern United States. “The reason we continue to attract so many awesome bike entries is the quality and experience of our judges, the amount of time we take to inspect each bike and the fairness and honesty during the entire 26 hour judging procedure,” said Show Competition Coordinator, Lisa Shackelford. The top winners of this year’s Custom and Antique Bike Competition were: • Judge’s Choice Best of Show – Denny Ritchie, 2010 Roadkill Chopper • People’s Choice Best of Show – Rick Levitan, 2002 HD Dyna Wide Glide – Beatles Themed Bike • Best Display of Show – Curtis Wolfe, 1966 HD Sportster • Best Handcrafted Parts – Troy Helmick, 1974 Honda CL 360 • Best Paint of Show – Kevin Webb, 2007 Harley Davidson Nightrain • Best Antique of Show – 3rd Annual Beatris Landis Memorial Award - Brian Kehoe, 1939 Indian Jr. Scout • Publisher’s Choice Award – John Nicklin, 1976 Honda Radical Trike “Action on the ‘Live’ stage was non-stop this year”, said Show Manager, Rich Kohles. There was the International Bikini Team Regional Finals where the winner was sent to the Bahamas, all expenses paid to compete in the World Finals. New this year was the Lowside Magazine’s Hands-On Expo featuring seminars, workshops and tool technique demonstrations for the fast growing Garage-Built Vintage Motorcycle culture featured on Discovery’s new ‘Velocity’ channel. This show features café racers, choppers, drag bikes, bobbers, rat bikes and more. There was also a huge ‘Super SWAPMEET’ with used bikes, parts, motorcycle clothing and artwork. All this took place in a 40,000 sq. ft. addition to the show. “Every vendor that we spoke to had said that their sales were great and customers were appreciative of the new show addition”, said Rich Kohles. The record crowd could also check out everything new the 2012 motorcycle manufacturing industry had to offer from the United States, Europe and Asia. Models were on display from: Harley-Davidson, Ducati, Indian, Victory, Honda, Suzuki, BMW, Yamaha, Can-Am, Motus, Kawasaki, Polaris, Hyosung, Lehman, Triumph, Leola Motor Trike, Ural, Bajaj, Spider Motortrike, Roadsmith and Hannigan Trikes. Last but not least there were hundreds of vendors selling every possible motorcycle accessory and riding gear for the on and off road racing, cruising, touring, and extreme riding enthusiast. Obiturary
Dan “Batman” Quay
Things are a little quiet at the Underground Biker in Palm, PA these days, a little more somber. We’ve lost one of the good ones when on March 13, 2012 Dan “Batman” Quay road on ahead. Dan, who was 56 years old, was a devoted husband, father and friend to all that knew him. He would do anything for a friend and never expected anything in return. While spending time with his wife Bonnie at one of his favorite spots, Rehoboth Beach, Dan was rushed to the hospital where he passed away several days later from a heart attack. Services were held at the Morning Star Fellowship located on Route 100 in nearby Bechtlesville. Active in the motorcycle community for many years Dan served as past President of the King’s Riders (a Christian Motorcyclists Association chapter in Lehigh Valley), he was founder of the Bikers for Christ M/M and recently the President of the Wheels of Soul. He recently worked on the Ride In Bike Show and Swap Meet held at Jake’s Flea Market, it was the first year for the event and Dan worked tirelessly to make it the success it was by drawing in support from other ride clubs in the area. I’ll never forget the first time that I saw Dan wearing his kilt with his long, Col. Armstrong Custer style hair cut. It made me laugh at first, but that’s the kind of guy he was. Dan enjoyed life and riding his motorcycle. He always had a big smile on his face when you’d meet him. As the founder of Skull Brothers and the Underground Biker he enjoyed working on bikes and helping his customers get what they came to his shop for. You could count on him to do the job right and at a fair price. Dan has moved along, he’s up ahead and will be waiting for his friends to ride again. He leaves behind a legacy of friends that will miss him dearly, myself among them. I’m proud to say that I am his friend and will always remember those days of riding together. I’m sure he’s up there putting together a great bike show and ride for us all. Rest in peace Dan, you’re riding with a new Road Captain now.

This months column takes on a somber note as I recently learned that a former client, Mr. Gerald Boyer of Allentown, PA died on March 4, 2012 when he was involved in a motorcycle accident. Inasmuch as I have been representing bikers going on 22 years, I have had my share of clients pass away, however 1-888-CYCLE-LAW Gerri was a little bit different and held a soft spot in my heart LeeGaber@cycleattorney.com because both he and his wife were good people in every www.cycleattorney.com sense of the word. Both Gerri and Carolyn were involved in a very litigious lawsuit, due to an unusual set of facts that led to their motorcycle accident in 2005. Without going into all of the details, they were both seriously injured, however the responsible insurance company didn’t see the facts the same way that we did and therefore litigation became necessary. There were many depositions taken of the parties and witnesses involved and ultimately as we were getting ready to go to trial, the parties all agreed to Binding Arbitration. The actual hearing, due to the number of participants, lasted approximately six hours and in the end, after a hard fought battle, we were not only successful, but received the amount we had been requesting the entire time. Although I would like to take the credit for the outcome, both Gerri and Carolyn were excellent witnesses. Throughout the claim I got to know Gerri pretty well and went through many of the typical life experiences that one goes through during any 3-4 year time frame, some good, some bad, but through it all, Gerri kept a positive attitude and was always insistent that he did nothing wrong to cause or contribute to this accident in any way. At the end of the day Gerri, you were right, and we prevailed! As a result of Gerri and Carolyn’s kind referral, I now represent Gerri’s daughter and sonin-law in a motorcycle accident they were involved in which, although has a different set of facts, is also becoming quite contested due to the Defendant’s refusal to accept responsibility even though all or part of the accident was witnessed by several other parties. My sincerest condolences go out to the entire Boyer family. Like I said earlier, the Gerri I knew was a stand up guy. He will be missed not only by his family, but by myself, his many friends and all of his “family” members at Lehigh Valley H.O.G. My heart goes out to his wife Carolyn, his daughter and son-in-law, Regina and Keith, and to the rest of the family whom I did not have the privilege of getting know during the time period when I represented the Boyer’s.
