I recently attended the 84th Birthday of Rose Schoch, owner of Schoch HD, and it got me to thinking a little about the old times. Now I’m not pretending that I’ve been a rider since I was a kid, I am 62 years old and only began riding around my 40th birthday. I have learned a lot about the culture and history of riding by talking with many of you. As I see it, riding a motorcycle is a choice that we’ve all made at one point in our life, whether from our youth or when we got older like I did. I’ve heard all the stories from friends and family about how dangerous it is yet I chose to ride for one simple reason, because I enjoy it. I’ve seen the T-shirts and bumper stickers that say “If I have to explain you wouldn’t understand” and I think that pretty much sums it up. But there’s a little more to this lifestyle than just going out and taking a ride. Over the years I have met some of the greatest people and best friends. If a fellow rider is in trouble it’s not too hard to find someone that will come to their aid. Hold a charity ride and watch how many show up and give support to the cause. I can’t think of any other group of people that can get together a charity event in so short a time as a group of bikers can. I’m not a “hard core” rider! There I’ve said it, but I do enjoy wearing the jeans, chaps and T-shirts and I think I look pretty good in leather too. My beard is always trimmed and I do wash my jackets and vests from time to time. I’m fine being with all types of riders and I respect those that “live the lifestyle” as well as those that ride on weekends. It’s all good and we all do get along as long as we respect others choices. Riding is freedom of choice for me and I love to get out and clear my head on a hot dog run, just because I can. I’m not a rebel, I’m not a trouble maker and I’m not a dare devil but I am a “biker” and I’m very happy that you’ve accepted me into your separate groups over these past ten years. All that being said, now go out there and enjoy the ride. Ride safe.

Getting Past the Stigma: Now a bigger 2-state run

June 3 Ride for Recovery spreads message of hope in addiction treatment Anyone on a motorcycle has put up with either raw stereotyping, or at least some supposed jokes, about drinking and drugs. Some people assume the worst of anyone on a bike, and the stigma is an unfair burden. Fighting such stigma, the Ride for Recovery at the nonprofit Livengrin Foundation in Bensalem, PA, spreads the message that recovery from addiction is possible and that help is available. th

The 8 annual Ride takes place on Sunday, June 3, with a new two-state poker run. The Ride raises funds to benefit patient programs and charitable care at Livengrin’s seven addiction-treatment sites throughout the Philadelphia metro region. Founded in 1966, the Foundation provides residential rehab in a quiet setting, along with outpatient services, detox, dual-diagnosis and family support programs; and DUI education services that run seven days a week due to the huge demand. Livengrin also offers cutting-edge specialized treatment tracks for first responders (police, firefighters, EMTs and combat vets) and nurses who are affected by dependency in their high-stress jobs. The Ride includes a pig-roast picnic, children’s activities, live music, fundraising raffles and drawings (with prizes including a new Harley-Davidson WideGlide), vendors and crafts. The poker run begins for the first time off-campus at a community sponsor’s site. Barb’s Harley-Davidson in Mt. Ephraim, NJ (just over the Walt Whitman Bridge from Philadelphia), is the kick-off point. Registration and coffee starts at 9AM, with most riders leaving Barb’s for the run by 11. (Riders can also gather at Livengrin in Bensalem at 9AM for a short parade to the starting point at Barb’s.) Families and friends join the incoming riders for a huge picnic from noon to 4PM. Livengrin is located at 4833 Hulmeville Road in Bensalem, PA, between the PA Turnpike, Street Road, I-95 and Rt. 1. All-event tickets are $20; picnic-only, $10; children twelve and under are free. Information and advance registration can be obtained online at www.livengrin.org/ride. The event hotline is 215-638-5200, ext. 310. More than 100,000 people have sought the path to recovery at Livengrin. Real Rehab for Real People is available at: www.livengrin.org

Lehigh Valley Motorcycle Extravaganza Bringing down the house! Story & photos by Norm Keller

Putting together a show takes a lot of work to make it happen and to make it an event that people enjoy and will want to come back. Mike & Cricket can be commended for doing a great job on this years show. The Motorcycle Extravaganza is a welcome event to the Allentown Fairgrounds complex and I look forward to seeing more great shows from this company. Along with a long list of vendors, bike shops and dealers attendees were treated to special guest Tattoo Tony (seen below). Tony, according to his website www.tattootony.com, is a NYC Detective and owner of the The Devil’s Den tattoo shop located in Copiague, NY (on Long Island). Also on hand were the antics of of “Syxx & Seven”, the Brothers O’Brien, who performed a side show on stage that was fun and interesting to all who watched. There was a bike show on Sunday with Jerry Tully of Custom Auto and Cycle winning the Eagle Trophy for being the #1 supporter of the year for the Motorcycle Extravaganza show. You can see results of the winners on their website www.mextrava.com on the Past Shows page along with information on upcoming shows in September at the Split Rock Lodge and the December show back at the Fairgrounds. Also on hand was the Haunted Harley in a special dark room so you could see all of the special effects built into the bike. Watch for this bike being featured in an upcoming issue of the East Coast Biker. This was a fun show with plenty to do. The free parking and the low cost of admission makes it a show for the whole family without breaking the bank.

Rose Schoch Celebrates 84th Birthday Surprise party draws friends and loyal customers Story & photos by Norm Keller

Many of us can remember the early days of motorcycling, the days when a Harley dealer was family owned and operated, usually starting out in a small garage or barn. Rose Schoch was there from 1966 when she and her husband, Cal Shoch, founded Schoch Harley-Davidson outside of Stroudsburg, PA. When I received a phone call telling me about a surprise birthday party for Rose my response was an immediate “I’ll be there.” How could I miss such a opportunity to celebrate a woman that has given so much back to the community. Over the years Rose has been an avid supporter of the military and local fire companies. She has even written a book about the history of local fire companies in Monroe County. When I arrived it was evident that many of her friends and long time customers wanted to wish her well because parking was scarce to say the least. As Rose mingled through the crowd she was stopped repeatedly as someone wanted to wish her a Happy Birthday. Food was not an issue because it seems as though just about everybody brought something to eat. If you went away hungry it was your own fault. The day ended with Rose coming to the parking lot to blow out the candles on her cake as everyone sang “Happy Birthday to Rose”. She thanked everyone for the outpouring then took time to have her picture taken with many of her friends. With this writing I would personally like to wish Rose a very happy 84th birthday and may there be MANY more yet to come. Photos are available on our photo page at www.eastcoastbiker.net.

Cleveland CycleWerks: Vision and hard work pay off Story & photos by Norm Keller

Cleveland CycleWerks stems from the truest definition of the “entrepreneurial spirit”: the American idea that if you have a dream, passion and drive you can achieve it. CCW was the vision of Scott Colosimo, a dream that began at age 15 and stemmed from his fascination and love for building custom bikes. As he grew, Scott honed his design skills in Automotive design in Cleveland, Detroit, Germany and Slovakia and was assured by many that he had the ambition and talent to do something bigger. Developing motorcycles continued to be his most passionate hobby. Scott’s favorite accomplishments were designing and building custom bikes. Scott studied transportation design at the Cleveland Institute of Art and worked in various industrial design roles throughout his professional career. It wasn’t until winter 2009 when Scott Colosimo took his dream of building bikes full-time seriously. One night, he found himself in a bar with his friend and colleague, Jarrod Streng, they both discussed their true passions, which didn’t have anything to do with their previous job of designing, developing and manufacturing vacuums. Scott explained his idea of building custom, modern bikes with old-school design at a reasonable cost; much like his own bobber which cost him under $5,000 not $30,000 and was admired by everyone who saw it. Jarrod, who had entrepreneurial aspirations himself, believed in Scott’s vision and put a business plan in place as well as the funding to create 30 bikes. With this, CCW’s design house was born at a friend’s garage in Ashland, Ohio as Scott began hand fabricating the first prototypes. Cleveland CycleWerks debuted their first bike, “Tha Heist,” (pictured top right) in February 2010 at the Indianapolis Dealer Expo to much industry praise and dealer interest. Jarrod and Scott began worldwide distribution for CCW in April 2010 where they provided custom bikes for all and fulfilled Scott’s dream in the process. CCW is a modern, global small business born in the USA. Parallel Intelligent Transportation, Inc, DBA as P.I.T. Motors Ltd, is a division of the Parallel group of companies. Established in 2009, the company business model was founded and developed with a code of conduct that no longer remains within our industry. The products they bring to market go hand and hand with their intent to bring value and joy to the mass demographic of general consumers. P.I.T. Motors’ is a company that people trust and choose to partner with. They believe that the approach of first “learning from the market” is a vital aspect of P.I.T. Motors’ experience in the industry. Elaina, this month’s cover girl, was asked if she would be interested in doing a photo shoot for a new line of motorcycles coming out as they needed a model. She figured “Sure, why not” and thought it would be fun. After talking with Brett Moore she discovered they had grown up across the street from each other and never even knew that they went to the same high school. P.I.T. Motors offered her the position of Development & Promotions and brought her on board. “I put my other FIVE jobs aside and jumped in with both feet,” Elaina said. “After a couple months I suppose they felt as though I was being under utilized in that position, and they offered me the position of General Manager,” she continued. “We are a small group of people doing big things and I’m just glad to be a part of it,” Elaina further added. We here at the East Coast Biker magazine are happy to share Elaina and P.I.T. Motors in this month’s issue. Stop in & check them out & don’t forget to mention that you read about their bikes in the East Coast Biker magazine.

B.A.C.A. Bash “2012” Celebrating 25 Years! Story & photos submitted by Wayne “Huffy the Clown” Hoffman

Biker’s Against Child Abuse is a club that demonstrates how we as bikers are involved with families in our areas. It was a pleasure to be a part of this event. The Leavins family was there along with the B.A.C.A. members and friends. The party started out with a delicious family meal of stuffed chicken, roast beef, mashed potatoes, sweet corn, beans, rolls, gravy and a salad. Yes we had cake and ice cream too! All the B.A.C.A. club members got together for a club picture and we played the club song “Rolling on down the Highway” by B.T.O. Raffle tickets were sold at ten for $5.00 and there were over 30 prizes with a value from $25.00 to $200.00. There was also a 50/50 drawing and a silent auction for an autographed picture donated by the Eagles organization. The cash bar was in full swing and the party got started with the electric slide and not to mention the real party song “Red Solo Cup”. Yes they downed a lot of those full Red Solo Cups! The B.A.C.A. Bash is held each year to raise money for a family in need of some financial support and help whether thru illness or handicap. This year’s Bash was held for Kathy Leavins and her three boys. All boys suffer from a major disability. Brian the oldest is partly paralyzed and is confined to a wheel chair. Matthew, who is 16, suffers from epilepsy, because of this has had to have brain surgery and requires round the clock nursing. The youngest son Jacob is 13 and has been recently diagnosed with bone cancer and he is undergoing treatment and doing well and at this time. The cancer has slowed down. Kathy, single mom works and has many doctor appointments to go to keeps her busy and financially stressed, so you can see why B.A.C.A. of Bucks County stepped in to give some help. This is also our 25th anniversary with activities in the works for celebration. We have been reaching out to the communities about helping fight child abuse. We also teach the children the rules about being safe so that they will not become victims of abuse and help them to know how to recognize danger whether from someone they know or a total stranger. Check our web site for updates on events, www.bacabucksco.com. We are busy getting ready to work within our community to make them aware that child abuse must stop. We will be doing this by having events and participating in events where we can pass out literature on abuse both for parents and children. So if you know of a family in need please contact a B.A.C.A. club in your area or me, “Huffy”, and I will help you make the right contact. Ride Hard but Safe......”Huffy”

A Really TALL Tale Climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro with son to focus awareness of HHT bleeding disorder By Loretta Jackson

Allan Olitsky, 69, a retired dentist from Lansdale, Pennsylvania, enjoys an adventure. He is a motorcyclist who often rides with the Gold Wing Touring Association — Chapter Y. He loves a cruise aboard his 2008 Gold Wing GL 1800, a snow-white trike given to him as a gift from his motorcyclist son, Stephen, 46, also a dentist. Allan, who first indulged in motorcycles in the 1960s, loves life. But he knows what it is to face the unknown. He was born with OslerWeber-Rendu disease, known these days as HHT — Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telanglectasia. It is a congenital disorder reflected in blood vessel malformations. In Allan’s case, HHT mostly caused nosebleeds that cumulatively were severe enough and frequent enough to warrant occasional blood transfusions to replace the precious, lost fluid. One of Allan’s sons, Scott, and his only daughter, Stacy, have been likewise plagued, to greater or lesser extents but all are doing well today. Allan, not that long ago, recognized he could be dying from the disease. The forceful nosebleeds occurred several times a day. His health was at an all-time low. He was so weak he could barely walk short distances. It was a lousy situation for any human being — let alone a dentist working full time. Eventually, Allan’s son, Scott — a Kansas physician — found an HHT expert — Dr. Terence Davidson, director of University of California San Diego’s Nasal Dysfunction Clinic. Father and son underwent treatment with Avastin — a drug most often used for colon cancer. It worked. It was a miraculous relief. All the while, Allan educated himself and found resources, many online from the HHT Foundation International (www.hht.org). Literature from the HHT Foundation International (www.hht.org) notes that HHT can be life-threatening. People with malformations of the blood-carrying structures in the brain can have strokes. Ruptures in other affected organs pose serious threats. Ninety percent of those people who have HHT are undiagnosed, until undergoing a catastrophic event such as a stroke or even death. “It was almost four years ago now that I was hospitalized and undergoing transfusions,” said Allan. “I want to make people aware of the illness, so that others can realize they don’t have to live that way — they can do things to help themselves.” Allan wanted to share his success story and prove to himself that he truly was renewed and raise awareness of HHT. His goal was to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro — the tallest mountain in all of Africa and the highest free-standing mountain in the world at 19,340 feet. He and Scott climbed the mountain together. Radio and television stations related their story. The publicity raised awareness of HHT and offered hope to those who felt there is none. Allan’s wife of 50 years, Gwen, and his daughter, Stacy, encouraged Allan’s plans for the climb. “Scott had made the climb three years earlier and he came with me — maybe as sort of a parental babysitter,” laughed Allan. “The climb was tough but the trip was well worth the effort. I proved to myself that I could do it — I did not have to sit back and die. I also raised awareness for HHT and showed people that they did not have to just wait for the inevitable.”

May 2012

It was time to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. The first portion of the climb went through rain forest where legions of monkeys and birds replicated sounds heard in every Tarzan movie ever made. The land was green with lush, dense vegetation. Allan said the terrain changed dramatically, the higher they climbed, and that above tree level nothing much grew. Allan and Scott, plus an experienced crew of 18, including a guide, an assistant guide, a cook and porters to carry tents and food supplies, achieved the summit in nine days. “Looking down, we saw glaciers, rocks and huge boulders,” said Allan. “It was exciting but hard going. Once we got up to 12,000 feet, it became difficult to breath. At 15,000 it became hard to sleep – not enough air. Oxygen was available but I didn’t want to use any supplemental stuff.” Allan is motivated to urge people toward finding out all they can about HHT. He says that unless somebody is diagnosed properly, which only can be done with genetic testing, they may never know they have a problem. “People tend to disregard nosebleeds,” said Allan. “They shouldn’t think nosebleeds are just something that happens. They could have very serious problems and an early diagnosis is important. There is a simple blood test that can be done.” He is the first to admit that climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro is not something that everyone should consider attempting. But he also admits there is value in celebrating life and stretching one’s boundaries — even to 19,000 feet. “Thinking you can do the impossible is very important,” said Allan Olitsky, survivor.

1-888-CYCLE-LAW (1-888-292-5352) LeeGaber@cycleattorney.com A column worth repeating ... Given that riding season is finally in bloom, I want to touch on the topic of DWI/DUI as many riders will end up at destinations where alcohol is being served. I feel that it is my duty to inform all of you that the penalties for DUI/DWI are getting harsher and more expensive every year.

1-888-CYCLE-LAW LeeGaber@cycleattorney.com www.cycleattorney.com

Though I have written on this topic in the past, it again merits discussion given the .08 limit in most every state. For many of us, this means that two beers or drinks in rapid succession will put us very close to the limit, especially if not ingested with food. While the penalties for a .08 to a .10 may not be terrible in some states, especially if it’s your first offense, two beers often leads to three or four and that’s when we start getting into trouble.

The penalties for driving under the influence vary widely from state to state however, in NJ, in most cases, a first offense will trigger a minimum seven (7) month license suspension and fines upwards of $1,000.00 plus attorneys fees. Adding insult to injury, if you are a PA resident charged with DWI while riding in New Jersey, you will not have the opportunity, even if it is your first offense, to utilize the ARD program usually offered to first offenders in PA and in most cases will have your license suspended for one (1) full year in PA. Normally first offenders in PA, not involved in accident, will be eligible for the ARD program which requires drug and alcohol evaluation and fines but rarely a license suspension. However, this program is only available one (1) time, after that, in PA if you are convicted of DUI within the next ten (10) years, you will do a minimum of five (5) days in prison and receive an automatic twelve (12) month license suspension along with extensive fines and penalties. If your blood alcohol is higher than .10 and you are charged with a second offense within a ten (10) year period in PA, the mandatory jail term grows to thirty (30) days, and another one year license suspension. Similarly in New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland, for each subsequent offense, the fines, potential jail time and the license suspensions grow harsher with each offense. Now I know that every one of you reading this column understands that if you are convicted of DWI/DUI, there are penalties. However, experience has taught me that most of the public doesn’t understand how severe the penalties and license suspensions can be. Furthermore, unlike most other criminal offenses, there is very little room to plea bargain on a DUI/DWI, as most states have mandatory fines, jail terms and license suspensions. As a result, many clients are very upset when they learn that they may lose their license for up to a year, even for a first offense. Given that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, please be careful and if you know you may be drinking, a designated driver is always a great idea!!! I hope you find this information informative and if you would like additional information on this topic, or any other, I can always be reached at LeeGaber@cycleattorney.com or by calling me at 1-888-CYCLE-LAW (1-888-292-5352).

Sincerely, LEE D. GABER, Esquire The one and only, “Cycle Attorney”
