November 2011

I’m not quite sure how we made it to November already. It seems like we were just trying to beat off the heat with temperatures in the 100° mark and now we’re getting out our winter clothing. Well, I’m glad that you’re here with me and we made it through another summer. It just seems like they keep coming faster every year, doesn’t it? You’ll notice a continuing theme in most of the stories in this issue and that is that the weatherman did a job on us this year. Many of the events were cancelled because of rain and some didn’t get a chance to re-schedule. This was not only a hot summer but it was a very wet summer too. We can only hope that 2012 will be a better ride season. Speaking of 2012, it marks the 10th Anniversary of the East Coast Biker magazine. We started in February 2001 with a little pamphlet sized book orginally intended to be a newsletter and here we are ten years later. It’s been a fun and bumpy ride but we made it and I personally want to thank you, my readers, for making it so. I’ve never said from the beginning that I am a writer and some of my stories show that. With the help of many people along the way, especially Loretta Jackson from the beginning, I have somehow managed to put together a monthly magazine for ten years that you actually want to pick up and read. Thank you to everyone that helped to make this possible and the list is too long to mention everybody but you know who you are. With all that being said, I will celebrating 2012 with a monthly contest and giving away prizes every month. Here’s how you can win and the first prize giveaway will be in January. If you haven’t already, register for my email newsletter because that is how I will be letting you know what the prize for that month is. Every month I send out two or three newsletters and one of them will have a prize notification with what the prize will be for that month. All you to do is reply back to that particular email with Name & mailing address and you’ll be awarded the prize. We’ll let our readers know who won from month to month. That’s as easy as I can make it. Register on the home page of our site if you haven’t already and tell your friends to register too. The contest begins in January. For now, there are some hot dogs that are waiting for me and I’ve got to get as many in as I can before the bike is hooked up to the battery tender.

New Dealership, New Attitude Keystone Harley-Davidson holds Grand Opening Celebration Story & photos by Norm Keller

When Bob Eggstein purchased the Blocker Harley-Davidson dealership located in Parryville, PA from the Blocker family it was not his intention to “re-create” the dealership but to grow on the years of good will and customer service offered by Denny Blocker and his family. “We want to continue providing the same high quality service the Blocker family has over the years ... with a new attitude,” Bob told me at the Grand Opening Celebration recently. Keystone Harley-Davidson held their Grand Opening Celebration on September 10th and 11th at the dealership located on State Road in Parryville, PA. Keystone Harley-Davidson is creating a destination location for Harley riders in Northeast Pennsylvania. Their motto is “Gateway to the Pocono’s”. They are a full service dealership housed in a 50,000 square foot state-of-the art facility.

Bob Eggstein, owner

“We are creating an environment where our customers can expect to receive a consistent, fair and customer friendly experience on every visit whether that is in-store, on-line, or participating in our events at the store. We have a unique opportunity to take advantage of the Pocono Mountains which provides an extraordinary riding experience for motorcycling” Bob explained. The dealership offers customers a large modern building for the display of new and pre-owned motorcycles, MotorClothes, parts & accessories, plus quality service for your Harley. They also provide motorcycle storage, Pennsylvania Motorcycle Safety training courses, an active HOG Chapter and beginning in 2012 ... rental motorcycles.

During the Grand Opening Celebration Bob and his staff welcomed visitors to see what the new dealership was all about. Food was provided by Grumpy’s Roadhouse, famous for the jambalaya, while a demonstration on the fine art of chain saw carving was demonstrated. Bikes were being pin-striped while enjoying the music of a local band. The parking lot was filled with people as well as shoppers inside looking for end-of-season bargains on T-shirts and accessories. From the look of the way the event was attended, I’m sure that Keystone Harley-Davidson is getting of on the right foot. With a great staff on hand to service the customers you can count on this dealership for sales and service. If you didn’t make the grand opening, stop by and check them out while your riding around the Pocono’s checking out the fall foliage. I’m sure you’ll agree with me that is a good place to purchase your next Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Keystone Harley-Davidson is open Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. For more information, please call (610) 379-4055 or visit their website www.keystonehd.com.

Leather & Lace MC gathers for annual charity ride Story & photos by Norm Keller

The Silver Rose Chapter of the Leather & Lace MC recently held their annual Scooters for Hooter’s ride to raise money for the John Hopkins Breast Cancer Center. Since this ride began they have raised over $50,000.00 toward the cause. This year the event was hosted at the American Legion in Palm, PA where an after party was held with great food and an awesome band that drove in from the Pittsburgh area to perform. In the parking lot of the Legion is the 911 Tribute showing the beam from the World Trade Center building in NYC that was brought in last year. One of the things that makes this event unique is that members come in from states all over the east coast. One of the attendees was former Lehigh Valley resident, now living in upstate New York, Traci Haas, known as “Buttercup”. Traci is the National V-President for the Leather & Lace MC and a founding member. It was great to see her again, she always has a big smile and a hug for her friends. The Silver Rose chapter began in 1990 and has grown into a very active group. You can see their members in attendance at just about every event happening in the area. The National Organization was founded in 1983 by Jennifer Chaffin to “Bring women together who have a common interest in motorcycling and making a difference in the lives of others,” as stated on their website where you can find more information at www.leatherandlacemc.com.

Polly & “Buttercup”

Even though the usual uncertain weather of this year, the event goes off rain or shine, fortunately the rain held off that day and they had a great time. Getting together with riders from as far away as Alabama, New York, Delaware, Florida & North Carolina to help out a charity and of course ... meeting up with old friends. For more information on the Silver Rose Chapter visit their website at www.leatherandlacemcpa.com. More photos are available in the photo gallery page at www.eastcoastbiker.net.

Big NOse Kate And the Tombstone Bike

Story by Norm Keller, Photos by Melis Kachinsky Red Bedroom Boudoir Photography www.pbase.com/meliskachinsky

Mary Katherine Horony Cummings, better known in the Wild West as Big Nose Kate, met up with Doc Holliday during the 1870’s in famed Dodge City, Kansas. It is said that Doc considered her his intellectual equal, according to Wikipedia. I think that Kate and Doc would be pleaseD with the “Tombstone” themed bike named “Kate” that was inspired by the movie Tombstone. The bike was designed and built by the owner, Donnie Shane or Smyrna, Delaware with the help of Eric Riehl (also doing fabrication) along with some influence from John Trabaudo. Mechanic Dino Krupca used a Total Performance 124 TPT engine that was polished diamond cut for extra brilience. A 120x21 front tire and a massive 250x18 Avon Venon-XTires provide the traction and curb appeal. The handle bars and headlight are by Arlen Ness, the front end is a Fat Bastard. Eric Riehl fabricated the gas tank, tail pipes by Vance & Hines and a custom air cleaner by Detroit Brothers. A little of this and a little of that makes for a great looking bike that is sure to attract attention no matter where it goes. Donnie is a retired Delaware state worker since 2004. With his wife Cathy they opened a small “Mom & Pop” grocery/deli, just to keep busy. During his “off time” Donnie and his friends continued the work on the “Kate” bike over the next 2 1/2 years. Donnie loved the movie Tombstone and wanted to do something in a bike to share his love for the movie. Don and his friends did a great job and we’re happy to have it featured in this month’s issue. On our cover this month is model Kristen, featured with the Kate bike. Kristen is a college student and works as a waitress at the Hooter’s in New Castle, Delaware. She loves sports, especially hockey and NASCAR and she’s not afraid to get some grease on her hands while working on cars and trucks. She loves guys with a sense of humor that are “rugged outdoorsmen” and she can be found on her days off either at the beach or the gym working out. Kristen loves country music and we’re happy to have her with us on this months cover. Stop in Hooter’s and let her know that you saw her on this month’s cover of the East Coast Biker magazine.

30 YEARS OF BRINGING JOY! “For The Kids” Toy Run participants made their first run on December 13, 1980 from a parking lot at Broad

Street and Cheltenham Avenue. Approximately 50 motorcycles toured through the city streets following the lead of Mike Horton and Denny Waldman, the chapter’s president and treasurer, respectively, who conceived the idea to dispel the bikers’ “bad guy” image. Through the years, as notoriety of this successful toy collection has expanded, so has the wealth of support. Celebrities such as the Honorable Seamus P. McCaffery, former Mayor of Philadelphia & Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Former State Representative Teresa Forcier, the Philly Phanatic, Santa Claus, recording artist Meatloaf, and actor Randall “Tex” Cobb, have given their time and talent to endorse our event. A special Thank you goes to Pierre Robert of 93.3 WMMR, Cavanaugh’s River Deck, Finnegan’s Wake, Tony Luke’s, the Philadelphia Police Department, the supporting sponsors and vendors, and all of the Bikers that hailed from the Mid-Atlantic Region to bring the joy of Christmas to the children and a smile to their faces. “If we can help take a child’s attention away from his or hers

illness or pain for even five minutes, then we’ve accomplished something.”

Well, as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. So after 30 years of hard work and dedication, the largest motorcycle parade in the World, the Toy Run “For The Kids” is over. The parade itself has gotten so big that the City of Philadelphia and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia can no longer handle the large numbers of participants anymore. The 2010 Toy Run had an estimated count of 115,000 participants, by far the largest turnout ever. A.B.A.T.E. of Pennsylvania’s Delaware Valley Chapter 63 would like to extend a huge Thank You to all who participated over the past 30 years!

Raindrops Keep Falling On My Bike But that didn’t keep riders away from Lansdale Bike Night Story & photos by Norm Keller

For three years in a row now the weatherman has been bothering the popular Lansdale Bike Night, but this year he didn’t win. Yes, when you first arrived at 3:00pm you might have been unsure about the little drizzles that were happening. If you registered your bike in the show you might have had to dry it off instead of dusting it, but the show went on and it was a great night in Lansdale. The town of Lansdale has been doing some work on the Madison Street parking lot where most of the activities happen so it might have looked a little different than in the past. The new changes have created a sort of midway where vendors can line up on both sides of the street and that was nice. This event has been one of the biggest bike nights on the east coast for many years and looks like it’s one of the few remaining Main Street events in our area. Many have been forced out of the downtown area, but Lansdale continues to be the Grand Daddy and I hope that it will for many years to come. Once again the Blue Comet MC has done an excellent job of organizing the event along with the help of the Boy Scouts and many riding clubs from the area. An event this size takes a lot of work before and after all the riders have gone home. It’s not uncommon to have people there until the early hours of Sunday morning picking up trash and putting everything back as if we’ve never been there. This year I spent most of my time walking around talking to people and from what I gathered is that everyone had a great time. I’m looking forward to 2012, I hope you are too. For a list of the Bike Show Winners, including the Big Daddy trophy, which went to Gary Heinel, & information on the Blue Comet MC visit their website www.bluecometmc.com. We’ll see you next year.

1-888-CYCLE-LAW LeeGaber@cycleattorney.com www.cycleattorney.com

This month’s column actually deals with some GOOD news on the insurance front for a change. Normally when I comment on insurance issues the news is generally bad. However, I recently learned that the Erie Insurance Company has requested that they be allowed to offer motorcycle coverage that is capable of being stacked onto Erie automobile coverage. Although the change has not yet taken place, the fact that Erie is requesting it, is a positive sign and signals to me that Erie is likely to start competing for motorcycle insurance business. That usually means lower premiums due to increased competition.

To the best of my knowledge, the only company that currently allows you to stack your motorcycle policy onto your auto policy is State Farm. However, that assumes that you have purchased the “stacking” option on both polices. I assume the same would also hold true for Erie. This should be welcome news to anyone who currently has Erie Insurance and wants to insure their motorcycle with Erie. On another note, I recently received a call from a client advising that his private health plan in PA has an exclusion written into the policy allowing the insurance company to deny coverage if he is involved in a motorcycle accident and is not wearing a helmet”. Although, I haven’t seen the language, I have no reason to disbelieve that the language is in the plan. Whether this exclusion would hold up if it was challenged legally, I don’t know. This is the first time I have heard of any type of helmet exclusion, but if challenged and upheld, it may become standard language in many health policies. This is clearly the exception to the rule right now, however I fear that as insurance companies are becoming increasingly restrictive, this language could find its way into more health insurance policies. The only similar language I have seen, has been found in Union sponsored health insurance plans in New Jersey, wherein many of them have restricted the coverage they provide if the injuries occur while operating a motorcycle. I will keep all of you informed when and if I find out more information about this topic. In the meantime, just to be safe, you may want to review your own health policy contract to find out if this language is in your policy, because it could have a devastating effect if you are ever involved in an accident without a helmet. On a final, note, if any of you are currently renting a home or an apartment, it is imperative that you purchase renters insurance. This insurance will cover your personal possessions if they are stolen, damaged or destroyed, be it by flood, fire or theft. It also protects you against liability in the event someone is injured while visiting your home. Many people are under the misconception that if you are renting, the owner of the property will have insurance that will covers your personal effects. This is absolutely not true. In order to be personally protected, you must purchase this coverage. It is normally very reasonable and can be a life saver if you ever experience a loss as described above. I hope you find this information informative and if you would like additional information on this topic, or any other, I can always be reached at LeeGaber@cycleattorney.com or call 1-888-CYCLE-LAW (1-888-292-5352).

It was a tough year for bike events all over the northeast as rains and hurricanes seemed to pick weekends as their targets. Many events were able to “rain dates” and re-schedule while others just lost money. This year the popular McDonald’s Bike Night events, held on Sunday nights at McDonald’s resturaunts throughout the Lehigh Valley, tried to allow for those uncertain weather conditions. It was unfortunate that there weren’t enough “rain dates” when the “rain dates” got rained out. About half of the Bike Nights did not happen this year due to weather so it was the goal of Mike Fountaine and the 99.9 the Hawk radio station to make the most out of every event and so they did. When weather allowed the attendance was good (Above) As the Master of Ceromonies, Ronald McDonald and everybody had a great time. was on hand at all events. (Left) Bike Night organizer, Mike Fountaine, saw to all aspects of the events. (Below) Riders showed up to win a trophy, meet with friends or have a burger and fries.

The final event was held at the South 4th Street McDonald’s in Allentown and it began to look as thought the weatherman was going to mess things up again. The sun won out and so did the many of riders attending.

These are great events to be a part of. Held on Sunday nights it’s a great way to wind down the weekend, have some fun and help out a worthwhile charity, the Ronald McDonald Camp. All proceeds went to this cause with the participating resturaunt contributing extra money for every bike that showed up. This camp, located in Pocono’s, is a week of fun and friendship, and freedom from being different. It’s a chance for the kids experience new activities and acquire new skills in a supportive, nurturing environment. It’s a time when kids can talk openly about cancer and everybody else understands.

The East Coast Biker magazine was proud to be one of this years sponsors and looks forward to 2012 with plans already in the making. If you didn’t get to any of the Bike Nights this year you might want to put it on your schedule for next year. If you would like to know more about the Ronald McDonald house in Philadelphia or the Ronald McDonald Camp you can go to their website www.philarmh.org and click on the Our Programs link for the camp information.

And The Winner Is Helping Hooters’ Bike Raffle winner is chosen Story by Norm Keller, photo provided

At many of the events you might have attended this past year you may have seen the raffle bike being offered to raise support for Helping Hooters’. The proceeds of the raffle went to support the Susan G. Komen 3 Day for the Cure. The bike was built by Mutter’s Custom Cycles in Boyertown, Pennsylvania and tickets were sold for $20.00. th

On October 8 there was a drawing at the Greshville Inn in Boyertown and the winner was announced. The winner is Mark Gertzen seen here in the photo with Jerry Garcia, the young boy who pulled the winning ticket (#191) and is fighting Lukemia, along with Cale Mutter the bike builder. Helping Hooters would personally like to thank: Cale and Lisa Mutter of MCS Customs www.mcscustoms.com, Travis and Nicole Smith of T-Love’s Custom Paintwork, and Dan Woods of D&W Motorsport and Jeff and Cheryl Graber of Graber Letterin'. Without their talents and generosity, this motorcycle and raffle would not have been possible for such an important cause The East Coast Biker magazine was proud to be a sponsor in this event. For more information on Helping Hooters’ you can visit their website www.helpinghooters.org.

Here, there and back again… Tolkien’s description of an adventure could apply to the cross country trip that Julianne Yarwood, the Director of the Keystone Chapter of Women on Wheels, competed on September 29th. Julianne documented her trip when she left the shire of Media, on September 12th on her Yamaha to explore the far western lands of the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas, Nevada. She related her struggles with rain, wind and fatigue and the joy of seeing the land transform in her daily email with such vivid descriptions that the club members could feel they were actually experiencing what a cross country trip on a motorcycle feels like. The details of Julianne’s trip are for her to tell but the club members can be grateful for the chance she gave them to share her experiences as they happened. To help area riders end the riding season, Cape Classic’s annual Roar to the Shore took place in Wildwood, New Jersey from September 8-11. Thousands of area riders converged on the seashore town for traditional biker activities like “cruising” the entire island along Atlantic Avenue, watching bikes and taking part in the nightlife at the local clubs. Organized activities at the Wildwood Convention Center provided alternative recreation all weekend. CanAm Spyder demo rides were available. A walking poker run offering a $1,000.00 prize took place on Saturday. Sunday a memorial ceremony for the victims of 9/11 took place at the Vietnam Memorial Wall across from the Convention Center. Also on Sunday at noon the Fifth Annual Rubber Duck boardwalk ride started at the southern end and finished at the Convention Center. All weekend unpredictable good weather insured that the many vendors stayed open. The Harley-Davidson York Assembly Plant again held its annual open house from September 29th to October 1st in York, Pennsylvania after skipping last year. Hundreds of riders made the annual pilgrimage to York to take demo rides on the latest models, participate in self-guided tours of the plant, shop at the dealers’ tents or just eat and listen to the music of From Chaos Comes Order. On Friday the riders could also visit vendors and view bikes at the York Bike Night. My annual trip to York became a nightmare ride of road work and washed out bridges which started only fifteen miles from my home in Broomall. When I arrived in York after a three-hour ride, that should have taken less than two-hours, I decided to take the factory tour because I was too frustrated to deal with the heavy traffic on the demo ride route. When I asked why no one was working at the plant, one of the friendly tour guides told me that the plant is in operation ten hours a day Monday through Thursday and that Tuesday is the best day to tour the plant although it is open for tours Monday through Friday. At the demo ride area, I was invited to take a “ride” on the stationery 883 Sportster on rollers. Although I declined, I thought it was a great opportunity for a person to get the feel of handling the controls of a live motorcycle without going anywhere. Going home I tried an alternate route but I lost time again looking for a way around the damaged bridges near my home.

At Wildwood’s Road to the Shore, riders had a chance to demo ride the new CanAm Sypder.

ABATE’s annual “For the Kids” rides ended in September. In the past, practically every rider in the Philadelphia area participated in the run to collect toys for sick children at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. After thirty years, the city of Philadelphia’s fees increased to a sum too great for one organization to fund. This opportunity to bring holiday joy to ill children will be missed. The Sixteenth Annual Lansdale Bike Night took place on September 10th. Hundreds of area riders were able to ride into downtown Lansdale which was closed to cars from 5-11 pm. Vendors, bands and bikes lined the main street and the Madison Street parking lot as Lansdale became a biker town for one night.

Stopping for a “photo op” at the Arizona state line.

Over two hundred riders participated in Hannum’s Dam Run on September 4th. Tonda Hannum stated that 280 people signed up for the run which left their Chadds Ford dealership. After returning from the Conowingo Dam in Maryland, the participants could enjoy the music of DJ Drew as they waited for the announcement of the 50/50 winners. Bill Cubler won the $205.00 prize and Elyssa Dover won a $500.00 Hannum’s gift card. Hurricane Irene and tropical storm Lee caused the cancellation of many club activities in September but local clubs were able to schedule events between rainstorms and floods. On September 9th, Bobbie Taylor and Claire Cahill led members of the Keystone Chapter of Women on Wheels for an overnight trip to Gettysburg where they toured the battlefield. Charlie Dresden, the Road Captain of Tri-State HOG, was able to reschedule the August chapter ride to the Strasburg Country Store on September 3rd. The group left Hannum’s Chadds Ford for a leisurely thirty five mile ride to the country store to enjoy some homemade ice cream. On Saturday October 1st a group from Tri-State HOG met at Neumann University’s Library parking lot to participate in Aston Township’s community day Parade and Ride, after the short parade along Concord Road Dresden led the group to a surprise lunch location somewhere in Chester County.
