February is the month of love, love for your family, friends and country. We take time to express our love for our wife or “significant other” ... at least you better, but it would be a good time to remember family as well those friends that mean so much to us too. Express love in as simple as a kind word. As I am now 61 years old and it occurs to me that in the years ahead I will very possibly be spending more time at funerals than weddings. I recently lost a friend, Greg Gossy, and on my way to the memorial service I took the time to drive through the town that I was raised in, recollecting the days of my youth and all of the friends that I had made over the years. If I would meet some of those old friends today what would I say to them? I think I might thank them for the great memories that we made along the way, many good memories and some not so good. Take advantage of this time of year to think about some friend or family member that you haven’t seen in a long time. It might be a good time to call or email them and say “Thanks for the memories.” I hope that you like this months cover, I was really excited when Sam Dixon called me and asked if I would be interested in featuring the Tron Light Cycle on the cover of this issue. I’ll be at the Motorcycle Show in Timonium, Maryland where the Light Cycle will be featured and you’ll be able to get a close look at it. There will also be cast members of the Son’s of Anarchy TV show at this event. You can get more information on their website www.cycleshow.net as well as times and directions. I hope to see you there, we’ll be filming for East Coast Biker TV. So February is a short month and that means the spring riding season is just around the corner. Get your bike cleaned up, do that power upgrade you’ve been wanting to do and I’ll see you on the road and very possibly you’ll be seen in the East Coast Biker magazine soon. GOLD WING TOURING ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES NEW PENNSYLVANIA OFFICERS GWTA recently appointed Bernie and Diane Newton as Pennsylvania State Directors. The Newton’s recently served as Chapter Directors for PA-Chapter Z and bring years of experience having served in multiple chapter level positions and as state director in another motorcycle organization. Since 1983, owning a 1983 Honda Gold Wing… twelve Gold Wings later… they have logged over 200,000 miles in 49 states. Currently, they ride a 2008 Honda Gold Wing and a 2006 Harley Ultra Classic. Bernie and Diane will serve as a liaison between GWTA and the Pennsylvania members. Their main goal is to implement GWTA policies, providing assistance to existing Pennsylvania chapters, and to share the GWTA ideals to draw new members and create new chapters. Every chapter is unique and has its own personality. The motto is “Destination Friendship” and our goal is to ride and have fun. In their new role as PA State Directors, Bernie and Diane have expanded their staff to include Don and Patty Hoffman serving as Assistant State Directors. The Hoffman’s are currently members of PA-Chapter J. They also have much experience in leadership roles as Chapter Director, Asst. District Director and Region Leadership Trainers in other organizations. In 1990, their first bike was a 1982 Gold Wing 1100… five Wings later… they now ride a 2010 Titanium 1800 and also a 2007 Honda Shadow. The Hoffman’s will be working with the Newton’s to get to know the PA members and help grow the organization. They can be contacted at phofoman@wildblue.net. Donna Thorne, currently with Chapter Z, has been chosen to handle the state finances… the Treasurer. She and her husband, Gary, first rode a 750 Hondamatic and very shortly thereafter progressed to a 1976 Honda 1000… three bikes later… they now ride an 1989 Gold Wing 1500 and have traveled the country with a group of friends… truly the meaning of our motto… “Destination Friendship”.

Another staff member is Public Relations Coordinator, Peggy Kratz. At present, she will be fulfilling two PR roles… one with her home PA Chapter Y, the newest and largest chapter in PA, and also at the state level. Peggy brings years of experience in PR work from previous work environments as well as serving on chapter staff and PR with another motorcycle organization. She will be responsible for preparing press releases on state events and notable chapter accomplishments and disseminating them to the public through newspapers and magazines. Although Peggy has been a co-rider with her husband, Ron, for 35 years, four years ago she decided to find out what the attraction was for driving a motorcycle. She quickly became addicted and now rides her own 2002 GL-1800 Gold Wing Motortrike conversion. Peggy is excited about spreading GWTA news to all parts of st Pennsylvania. Schaeffer’s Harley-Davidson Celebrates Christmas with Their Customers Story & Photos submitted by Mystic Ryder www.themysticryder.com Schaeffer's Harley-Davidson held their annual Christmas Open House th this past December 11 . It was a beautiful, crisp winter’s day. There was a light snow fall and the cold air made it nice to be inside with wonderful friends. As soon as you walked in you were greeted by Schaeffer's elves that would lead you to the lovely Christmas tree and presented you with a gift from the Schaeffer family. It was a very nice gift at that. The store was full of happy customers and lots of Christmas cheer. There were smiles were everywhere. Christmas sales and specials were seen at every turn. This is Schaeffer's second most busy time of the year as the showroom & boutique were full of Christmas shoppers. In the shop area, which was transformed in to and luncheonette and buffet, was the smell of so many hot foods and beautiful baked desserts as far as the eye could see. I filled my belly and smiled a lot as I talked to many friends and fellow bikers. We all had a great time. I recommend Schaeffer's Harley-Davidson to anyone looking for a bike, service or accessories; you just cannot find a warmer group of people and personal friendly treatment along with the best customer service. The staff at Schaeffer’s constantly gives thanks to their loyal customers. A good time was had by all.

BROS M.C. Annual Toy Run Once Again the Weather was Brisk But Sunny for The Bros M.C. Annual Toy Run to benefit the Children’s Home in Reading, PA. The Cool Weather never stops the kindness of those that help support such a Great Cause. With as many as 100 Motorcycles in attendance, and some vehicles in tow, we made our journey to the home. We stopped along the trip to pick up a special guest, yes, Santa joined us. After our presentation to the Home & some words of thanks from several of the kid's we made our journey back to the Birdsboro Fire Hall for some homemade soup, snacks & refreshments. We would like to thank all of the club's and all of our friends for helping us make this a great day. Fantasy has a way of becoming reality in today’s world, this time at Parker Brothers Choppers in Melbourne, Florida. It is at Parker Brothers Choppers that the Tron Light Cycle, formerly a computer-generated special effect of the first magnitude, has been re-birthed in lightweight space-age materials. It is a futuristic work of art — a hubless wonder wrapped around a feisty Suzuki engine. It’s a bike whose hubless wheels feature nothing in the middle but voids of empty space. Many cycles ago — in 1982 — a science fiction movie by Disney featured a masterful software engineer named Kevin Flynn, a.k.a. Jeff Bridges, who disappears into a futuristic world inhabited by humanoid programs and their users. Flynn fights to survive and soon teams up with a security program named Tron. They hope to change their tightly controlled, digital world for the better. But as we all know, stuff happens. Tron thrilled cyber fans of all ages. The movie’s Light Cycle, whose forward motion created a trailing wall of light, was a favorite feature. Today, the old is new again, for now playing is another Tron movie, one in which Flynn’s son searches for him. It’s called “Tron: Legacy.” And it too features the Tron Light Cycle, a bike that has come to life at Parker Brothers Choppers. Marc Parker and Shanon Parker are the brothers behind the creation. They have a team of nearly a dozen specialists with a myriad of talents ranging from fabrication to custom paint. The brothers grew up with tools in their hands. They watched their dad whiz around on a Harley built by Pete Hill, a legendary Harley drag racing star. Motorcycles and hot rods were their play toys. Now, they have become experts at building dream rides and replicating for street riding machines seen in movies and science fiction. Early on, they built a “KITT” from Knight Rider and “Eleanor” from Gone in 60 Seconds. Their rendition of the “Batpod” from The Dark Knight won acclaim. But the Tron Light Cycle is their latest and most celebrated masterpiece. It’s the Light Cycle’s wheels that attract attention. The hubless design actually involves two rims, one smaller than the other. The one that’s visible is attached to the frame. It’s the outer rim that does the rotating around the inner rim. “We’ve had a really good response from our customers and lots of celebrities,” he said. “The computer wizards at the movie’s award-winning special effects company — Digital Domain — really liked the Light Cycle. It’s an amazing machine.”

The Tron Light Cycle is a special build, set off so sublimely in this issue of East Coast Biker by lovely model Heather Shanholtz. The brothers are keeping the original bike but they are building five more. Each will sell for about $55,000.00 — not much more than the cost of construction. Their Light Cycle is slated for to be at the Timonium Bike Show in Baltimore, MD, on February 11-13, as well as at Daytona Bike Week, March 4-13. “There are no limitations to what can be built,” Marc said. “If someone has an idea that they think is impossible, we’ll build it. In fact, we’re working with aerospace people right now. We’re going to build a flying motorcycle.” The brothers have a fine working relationship. Shanon comes up with the shocking ideas. Marc finds a way to make them work. . “We saw a model of the Light Cycle online,” Marc said. “And we looked up at each other and said, ‘We got to do that.’ The Parker brothers contend that anything can be built. All it takes is somebody to come up with an idea. The Parkers think anything is possible and that if someone can dream it, they can build it. Marc summed it up: “We’re always looking for the next cool project.”

Motorcycle Club Gives Back to the Community The Maverick's MC take pride in their giving back to the community and this year has been no different. Through the combined efforts of Mike" Mountain" Mandel and members of the Maverick’s Motorcycle Club of Upper Moreland, along with Kevin "Thumper" Flowers and members of the Diversified Ryders of Ambler, PA a total of 151 turkeys and 17 gift cards were distributed to needy families in our communities. Also donated were 20 turkeys and nine (9) cases of canned goods to the Philadelphia Veterans Multi Service Center located at 213-217 North 4th St. Also undertaken this year, the Maverick’s held their annual Coats for Vets Drive. While this months column may be slightly off topic, I am asking, could the Arizona shooting tragedy happen again?

The shooting which critically injured Congresswomen Gabrielle Giffords and mortally wounded several others, is certainly the worst tragedy I am aware of in 2011 and certainly ranks up there with one of the worst politically motivated shootings in recent history. Therefore I am asking given the current level of political infighting at both the State and National level, is this going to be the start of a new wave of domestic terrorism? Certainly politically motivated acts of violence are nothing new to our country, however, my fear is, given the current economic crisis, these types of shootings by outraged citizens may increase as more people become increasingly incensed by our local and federal governments inability to stop fighting and actually begin to solve some of our country’s problems.
I don’t usually like to touch upon political issues, as I have found that regardless of political affiliation, offering an opinion on virtually any subject is often met with an equally passionate position on the other side leaving little room for compromise. However, this is why the politicians need to rise above their party lines and seek real solutions to the problems that we are all facing today! In my small corner of the world, after twenty years, I am seeing more anger and frustration after an injury has occurred, primarily because the individual who has caused the injury, may have little or no insurance available to compensate the victim. In most cases this is because many drivers have chosen to purchase the minimum legal amounts of insurance, which in today’s dollars is woefully inadequate to compensate virtually anyone who suffers a serious injury. The reason we are allowed to purchase such low amounts of insurance in most states is because our legislatures set these minimums a long time ago and have refused to increase them. Some states, including New Jersey, have actually lowered the minimum limits and/or made it legal to operate a vehicle with virtually no liability coverage available to compensate someone who may be injured as a result of someone else’s negligence. While the argument for low limits is that it saves money, in the end, the cost for that savings is ultimately borne by the individual who is injured by someone who saved a few bucks by being allowed to purchase a bare minimum policy. Additionally many of those same legislators have voted to repeal some types of coverage that we were once required to purchase and as a result many who think they have full coverage on their vehicles, do not. Make no mistake, the reason these policies are the way they are is because the State Legislatures have been lobbied hard by the insurance industry in order to allow the insurance companies to sell policies that are most profitable for them. In the end, when someone is injured and learns that there is not enough insurance to cover their out-of-pocket expenses, medical bills, property damage, etc, this simply adds to the level of frustration that everybody continues to feel. The outrage may not be on the same level as issues such as gun control, abortion, social security, etc, but make no mistake, it is a serious problem that can and should be fixed by our representatives if they would just use some common sense and put our needs above their own. What we need is solutions to our problems, not more finger pointing or blame! December was a time for parties and celebrations in the tri-state area. Looking back over a year of motorcycle runs to help sick children, area wide campaigns to battle Multiple Sclerosis and club events to raise money to help sick members, shows the generous spirit of the people who ride in the tri-state area. Yet the area media had no space for stories of riders who helped improve lives of others. In the new year the voices in motorcycle papers and magazines will tell stories about the generosity that characterizes most motorcyclists and maybe someone will find a way to put these materials on the news desks of the media. Santa came to Hannum’s HD in Tri-State HOG members enjoyed their Christmas dinner meeting on st the form of Bill Downs. December 1 at Hennessey’s Restaurant in Aston. At the meeting Jo Ann Sapp, the club’s secretary, was given the Joe Mongulzzo Award because she was voted as the member who contributed the most to the club. Then Joe Mirasola, the director of the club, gave a check for $3,000.00 to Jim Hay, the public relations person for Camp Joy, to help the camp continue its work in giving special children a summer camp experience. The following week Hay had to report that the Camp Joy had to close due to money problems. However, the money for Camp Joy may go to Brian’s House, Inc. which also helps special children. Tri-State HOG also members met at Henderson High School on December 5th to lead the runners participating in Brian’s Run, a running marathon designed to help Chester County charities. The club members also helped to make and serve refreshments to the event participants. Chapter A of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association started the New Year with their annual New Years Day ride. This year the riders left in mild weather from the WAWA in Skippack, located on Routes 113 & 73, to ride to the Pennsburg Diner in nearby Pennsburg, PA. In the past, some the Chapter A members braved snow and rain to ride on New Years day which they believed guaranteed that they will be riding all year long. Tommy Hannum held their Open House events in December at his Haley-Davidson dealership in Chadds Ford and Media. Santa visited both dealerships and Hannum’s provided a chance for demo rides. There was a pig roast at Chadds Ford, PA and a Holiday Cheer party at Media, PA

The Keystone Chapter of Women on Wheels held its annual Holiday Party on the afternoon of December 11th at the Cold Stream Crossing club house on Route 113 and Cold Stream Road. The members got a chance to take and give gifts at the Kamikaze gift exchange where no item belonged to anyone for too long. Area riders had a chance to include motorcycles in their holiday shopping at the Lehigh Valley Motorcycle Extravaganza held at the Allentown Fairgrounds in Allentown, PA on December 11 and 12. The event featured opportunities to buy new bikes or have a bike customized with unique parts and accessories. Tri-State riders ended 2010 with a bang and are looking forward to 2011 to be a great year for riding and helping those in need.

Toy Run in Delaware County Another year, another success story Story & photos by Norm Keller
One of the best toy runs in the Philadelphia area may not be the largest but it surely draws a large group of riders every year. BACA of DELCO has been hosting their Clarence Bell Memorial Toy Run for 13 years with growth every year, and this year was no exception. The ride meets at the Upper Chichester Municipal Building then heads out as a group in a Police escorted ride. After the toys were delivered riders met at a local bar and restaurant for music and good food. The weather was perfect for a ride that day, you couldn’t have asked for better weather. This made for a great ride to and from the toy run as well, having a 40 mile ride to get there then back home cold temperatures would have made for a long ride. Future riders helped out to collect toys and stack them in trucks and a trailer as boys dressed in Army fatigues wrestled with boxes and carefully packed the trailer with the toys for distribution to those in need. Care and attention was given to every toy to ensure that they would be delivered safely. With the winter weather coming on us, it’s always great to meet with friends before the bike gets parked for the season. I got to meet a lot of people that I don’t get to see very often. There are photos the Photo Gallery on our website, be sure to check them out. I had a great time riding in this event and hope to be able to make it again for 2011. OBITURARY - Gregory W. Gossy Gregory W. Gossy, 63, of Northampton, PA, died Tuesday, January 4, 2011, at Lehigh Valley Hospice-Inpatient Unit in Allentown, PA. He was the husband of Sharon M. (Heist) Gossy with whom he celebrated 24 years of marriage this past March 11, 2010. Born in Allentown, PA, he was the son of Ernest Gossy, of Hollywood, FL and Jeanne (Moyer) wife of Marvin Kulp of Allentown, PA. Gregory was Owner/Operator of DoorMaster, Inc. of Northampton, PA for 30+ years before retiring this September 2010. He was a current member of HOG (Harley Owners Group) and a former member of LV Chapter 4497; a former member of the A.B.A.T.E. and a life member of the N.R.A. Surviving along with his wife; father; mother and stepfather are: one daughter, Michelle Ann Gossy of Lehighton, PA; three sons, Michael G. Gossy of Lehighton, PA, Matthew M. and Mark S. Gossy both of Palmerton, PA; one sister, Ms. Carolyn Marsten of Palm Beach, FL; three brothers, Donald Miller of Macungie, PA, Kevin Miller of Lancaster, PA, Brian Kulp of Northampton, PA; and four grandchildren.

Raymond V. "Tex" Texter Raymond V. “Tex” Texter, 85, of Willow Street, passed away Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at the Essa Flory Hospice Center. Tex was married to Betty Jane Aument Texter for 50 years on December 18th. Harley-Davidson Motorcycles were his life. Tex was a partner with Bill Miller in Lancaster Harley-Davidson until 1963 when he became sole owner and then moved the business to Willow Street in 1964. He operated the business until 1998 when he handed the reins to his son Randy and continued to be active until this past year. He was a lifelong member of the American Motorcycle Association and the National and Local Harley Owners Group. Tex previously served on the board of the Dealers Advisory Council of Harley-Davidson and was president of the Eastern HarleyDavidson Association for 26 years. He was also involved in HarleyDavidson Racing in various capacities for many years. Born in Phoenixville, he was the son of the late Raymond V., Sr. and Naomi Crouthamel Texter. He was a graduate of Phoenixville High School and a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Lancaster. In addition to his wife Betty, Tex is survived by 2 sons, John E. “Jack”, husband of Patricia A. Texter, Lancaster, and Bruce E., husband of Carla M. Texter, Millersville, 6 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and his sister Edith Northacker, Parkerford, PA. His son and Harley Davidson partner Randy Lee Texter died this past August 30th. Funeral Services were held on Monday, January 3, 2011 at with the Reverend Steven Verkouw officiating, at the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA. Interment in Willow Street Mennonite Cemetery.
