Have you ever wanted to learn how to up-cycle a piece of furniture but didn’t know where to begin? Look no further! Wendy has the knowledge and skills to teach you how to take a sad piece of furniture and make it happy again. Through the techniques of sanding and painting, she will help you “flip” it into something new for your home. Bring a small side table to class and you’ll enjoy giving new life to an old piece of furniture. NOTE: The table should be small enough to easily transport back and forth to class. Quilting 101 – Disappearing 9 Patch NEW

Learn the basics of quilting, intersecting seams, pattern placement and much more in this 3-night class. Learn to make a crib size/ lap quilt by the end of the class. Sewing 101 – The Basics

Create the perfect garden for your home. Our instructor, a professional landscape designer and master gardener, will discuss soil, moisture, sun exposure, shade, and drainage. He’ll use tailored approaches for each student to help you design a garden that meets your needs and style. He’ll sketch individual outdoor plans for your site. You’ll leave class with a greater understanding of your outdoor space and learn how to better make your garden grow. EMPLOYMENT & TRAINING EMPLOYMENT & TRAINING American Red Cross CPR, AED and Basic First Aid

Begin to understand the importance of early CPR and defibrillation through basic life support training in this blended learning class. Students will learn how to perform basic CPR, first aid and how to use an Automat External Defibrillator (AED). You will be required to perform 2-hours of online learning prior to coming to class. You will be sent a link after you register to complete the pre-requirements. Clinical Medical Assistant Program – 140

Classroom Hours w/ a Clinical Externship (classroom learning and online learning available) This program is intended for students who want to prepare for an exciting, challenging and rewarding career in healthcare. This program will train students to assist physicians by performing functions related to the clinical responsibilities of a medical office. Instruction includes preparing patients for examination and treatment, routine laboratory procedures, diagnostic testing, technical aspects of phlebotomy and the cardiac life cycle. Students will review important topics including phlebotomy, pharmacology, the proper use and administration of medications, taking and documenting vital signs, cardiology including proper lead placements, professional workplace behavior, ethics and the legal aspects of healthcare. This program includes 140 hours of classroom lecture, hands-on labs and a clinical externship opportunity at a local healthcare provider. To be eligible for the clinical rotation, students must successfully complete the 140-hour program, submit to a thorough background check, drug screening and meet other requirements. Dialysis Technician (online learning)

EKG Technician Program program, students will be eligible to sit for the National Health Career Association (NHA) Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) national examination. This program provides students with the knowledge needed to perform the responsibilities of a Dialysis Technician. Topics include normal kidney physiology; basic principles of hemodialysis; kidney dialysis machines; dialyzer preparation and reprocessing; and assisting dialysis patients in managing their disease and treatment. EKG Technician Certification Program (classroom learning and online learning available)

This comprehensive, 50-hour EKG Technician Certification Program prepares students to function as EKG technicians and to take the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT) – Electrocardiograph (EKG) Technician Exam and other national certification exams. This course will include important practice and background information on anatomy and physiology of the heart, medical disease processes, medical terminology, medical ethics, legal aspects of patient contact, electrocardiography and stress testing. Additionally, students will practice with EKG equipment and perform hands on labs including introduction to the function and proper use of the EKG machine, the normal anatomy of the chest wall for proper lead placement, 12-lead placement and other clinical practices. EMPLOYMENT & TRAINING • FINANCIAL Pharmacy Technician (online learning) NEW

This online program prepares students for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) Exam. The course, which is in candidate status for ASHP/ACPA accreditation, includes simulations and connects students with an externship partner at a local pharmacy (CVS or Walgreens) for the fulfillment of graduation requirements. Study topics include pharmacology, pharmaceutical calculations and nonsterile compounding, as well as pharmacy law, regulations and standards. In addition to one-on-one instructor support, students will receive a laboratory kit, e-books, and an exam voucher. Time to complete this program is estimated to be 292 hours. Tuition cost includes a new laptop, access to a student advocate and job placement. $2,999

Phlebotomy Technician Certification Program w/a Clinical Externship (online learning)

This online program prepares professionals to collect blood specimens from clients for the purpose of laboratory analysis. Students will become familiar with all aspects related to blood collection and develop comprehensive skills to perform venipunctures completely and safely. Topics covered are anatomy and physiology, terminology, blood collection procedures. This program includes an optional clinical externship rotation for all students. The purpose of this class is an exploration of light, color and vision through your camera lens. A good quality smartphone camera can work almost as well. This class is for those truly interested in producing quality images with their smartphones cameras. Community Education Registration Information Registration:

Paid pre-registration is required for all classes. Registrations are processed on a first-come, first-served, PAID basis. Classes run contingent upon PAID enrollment and may be cancelled or postponed due to insufficient registrations. If class is cancelled or postponed, you will be notified using the contact information you provide with your registration.

Please make checks payable to “EASTCONN Community Education.” Phone and fax registrations accepted with VISA and MasterCard only.

Confirmation/Receipts:

All confirmations and receipts are sent via e-mail. If an e-mail address is not provided, you will not receive a confirmation. If class is cancelled and time permits, notification is provided via e-mail. In the event an e-mail is not provided and time permits, we will contact registrants via the phone number provided at the time of registration.

Refund Policy:

A full refund will be issued when EASTCONN Community Education cancels a course. If desired, a voucher may be issued to use at a later date. Please allow up to four weeks from cancellation to receive credit and/or voucher. Accessibility and Accommodation Requests: If you have a disability and require an accommodation in order to participate in any program or activity, please call 860-423-2591 at least two weeks prior to the class and/or event so that the appropriate arrangements may be made.

Weather Cancellations:

If EASTCONN and/or the school or site at which your class takes place is closed due to inclement weather, your class will not meet. Should bad weather develop during the day, class cancellations will be announced by late afternoon. Adult Education classes on page 11 of this catalog will be cancelled on WVIT NBC30 TV; or, listen to radio stations 98.3 FM, 97.5 FM, WINY 1350 AM, or WILI 1400 AM. Weather-related cancellations for all other Community Education classes will be listed on the home page of the EASTCONN website at www.eastconn.org, and on the Community Education Facebook page.
