Capitol Theater Arts Academy Classes Theater • Musical Theater Program THEATER CTAA endeavors to provide opportunities for young performers to grow progressively through our Theater and Musical Theater program. Each class is designed to give students the tools necessary to become skilled performing artists. Students begin at the level appropriate to them and may grow through the classes offered.

Acting 1: Creating the Actor’s Toolbox (Ages 8-12)

Actors have a “toolbox” of skills and talents from which to draw. This class will teach, encourage, and sharpen the actor’s tools — voice, body and imagination — through exercises, games, and skits. Students will also develop self-confidence and the ability to be creative collaboratively! This class covers basic acting principles including action, objective, obstacles, conflict, beats, and being in the moment while incorporating fundamentals of movement, voice, and improvisation essential to the art of acting. Students will examine scripts, perform character analysis, learn about actors’ journals and perform a final presentation for families. 13 Classes with Dan Fee: $130 Mondays, Sept. 8–Dec. 8, 5:30-6:30 p.m.

Stage Combat (Ages 12+)

Students will learn the basics of stage combat, as well as techniques used by film and stage actors, to portray combat safely. We will learn hand-tohand techniques and work using stage-safe swords. We will also learn the basics of creating a whole fight scene. No previous experience is necessary. Solid-toed shoes are strongly recommended for each class. This class requires movement; please dress appropriately. 13 Classes with Shane Fee: $130 Wednesdays, Sept. 10–Dec. 10 (no class 11/26), 6-7 p.m.

Shakespeare (Ages 12+)

Shakespeare is a great tool to help actors develop an understanding of dialogue, characters and emotions. Through monologues and scene work, students will develop a working knowledge of how to understand and accurately portray Shakespeare. Students will explore important tools for speaking the text, including scansion (analysis of verse into rhythmical patterns), First Folio work, and closer analysis of the Bard’s words to understand their

true meaning. 13 Classes with Shane Fee: $130 Wednesdays, Sept. 10–Dec. 10 (no class 11/26), 7–8 p.m.

Acting 2 (Ages 10-16)

Building upon the skills students already have, this class will concentrate on voice, body and imagination. They will work to develop self-confidence through theater games and group work. Students will learn to analyze characters for their qualities, characteristics and motivations. A final presentation for families will take place at the end of the semester.

14 Classes with Dan Saturdays, Sept. 6–Dec. 13, 11 a.m.–12 p.m.

MUSICAL THEATER PROGRAM Capitol Theater Arts Academy presents Alice in Wonderland! (Ages 10+)

Fee: $140

Script Analysis (Ages 12+)

The answers to how an actor or director should approach the text of a script are in the text. In this class, learn techniques to help you act within the truth of the moment and have fun! Analyzing the script creates a blueprint of clear choices that activates the actor to play truthfully and impulsively under the given circumstances. This class will teach you how to break down scenes simply and specifically. Script analysis is an organizational skill and a collaborative tool that helps you make clear and confident choices in your preparation, so in performance you can feel free to work viscerally, boldly and bravely. 14 Classes with Dan Fee: $140 Saturdays, Sept. 6–Dec. 13, 12–1 p.m.

Acting & Comedy Improvisation (Ages 10-14)

Lewis Carroll’s unflappable young heroine, Alice, takes a tumble down an enchanted rabbit hole to an off-kilter world of mock turtles, dancing flora, punctual rabbits and mad tea parties. Playing cards hold court and nothing is as it seems in this land where whimsy and wordplay are the order of the day. Will Alice be able to find her footing in this bizarre place?! More importantly, will she ever figure out how to get home? CTAA’s popular Musical Theater Program returns with Lewis Carroll’s classic tale of a girl who travels to a magical land. Students will spend rehearsals working on blocking, music and dances to create a show that will be performed for three public performances. Public performances on March 13 & 14, 2015. Classes with Shane and Kasia Fee: $525 Tuesdays & Thursdays, Sept. 9–Mar. 17 (no class 11/11, 11/27, 12/23, 12/25, 12/30, 1/1), 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Comedic Improvisation, like “Whose Line is it Anyway?,” is not scripted but requires building blocks to create successful scenes. Students will develop the confidence to take control of the stage, develop cool characters and funny situations and support fellow performers. Using shows such as “Saturday Night Live,” “Monty Python,” and “Second City TV” as inspiration, we will work on the skills necessary to create great comedy sketches. This class will be a blast, so come with your improv and writing shoes on. A performance will take place for families at the end of the semester. 13 Classes with Dan Fee: $130 Mondays, Sept. 8–Dec. 8, 6:30–7:30 p.m.

Students who wish to go en pointe must take class twice a week to build the proper strength. 13 Classes with Amy Fee: $195 Tuesdays, Sept. 9–Dec. 9 (no class 11/11), 6:15–7:45 p.m. OR Thursdays, Sept. 11–Dec. 11 (no class 11/27), 6–7:30 p.m.

Ballet 4/5*

This class is appropriate for both Ballet 4 and Ballet 5 students. Please see appropriate level for full class description. 13 Classes with Amy Fee: $195 Wednesdays, Sept. 10–Dec. 10, 6–7:30 p.m.

*About Combined Classes Students benefit both by being challenged and by leading, so as they progress through the levels, we like to see students contrast a “challenge” level class against a class at their “mastery” level. For the more advanced, the “mastery” class is an opportunity to build confidence and leadership skills by modeling clean technique in more familiar steps for their less advanced peers. For those less advanced, it’s an opportunity to be exposed to new challenges while mixing in with more advanced peers.
