Capitol Theater Arts Academy & EASTCONN EASTCONN’s Capitol Theater Arts Academy (CTAA) is a community arts education program for Northeastern Connecticut children, ages 3 to 18. Founded in 2007, as part of EASTCONN’s arts outreach initiative, CTAA offers classes in dance, theater, musical theater, creative writing, visual arts, and private music lessons — all taught by talented, local, professional artists. CTAA is housed in EASTCONN’s Capitol Theater, a beautifully renovated Art Deco-era facility in the heart of Willimantic’s thriving downtown. Surrounded by boutique eateries and adjacent to the library and post office, the theater is also home to Arts at the Capitol Theater, or ACT, EASTCONN’s regional arts high school. Once ACT’s high school students head home for the day, CTAA comes to life, offering evening and Saturday classes to the region’s youth. CTAA students have access to the Capitol Theater’s two fully equipped theaters, a black box theater, two dance studios, classrooms, audio/video editing suites, a full theater scene shop, a costume design space, a café and an art gallery. CTAA is an enthusiastic part of the downtown Willimantic community, inviting area residents to attend four CTAA student shows each year: two in dance and two in musical theater. CTAA students regularly participate in Willimantic’s “3rd Thursday Street Fest,” its annual “Chocolate Festival,” and “Trick or Treat on Main Street.” Students also perform at the Windham Senior Center and Regency Heights. CTAA offers its young dancers an opportunity to join the highly selective Youth Dance Performance Ensemble, which also performs during special occasions and at outside venues.

Special CTAA Event coming in May!

This musical retelling of Shakespeare’s comedy Twelfth Night captures both the carefree energy of the play’s hilarious hijinks and its deeply felt emotions of loss and unrequited love.

When the shipwrecked Viola washes ashore on the island of Illyria, she hides out disguised as her deceased brother Sebastian as a servant to Duke Orsino who is in love with the Lady Olivia. Add in some servants, clowns, mismatched love letters and merriment ensues.

THEATER CTAA endeavors to provide opportunities for young performers to grow progressively through our Theater and Musical Theater program. Acting 1: Creating the Actor’s Toolbox Ages 8-12 | Mondays | 5:30-6:30 p.m. Instructor: Dan Coyle | Fee: $150 (15 classes) Actors have a “toolbox” of skills and talents from which to draw. This class will teach, encourage, and sharpen the actor’s tools — voice, body and imagination — through exercises, games, and skits. Students will also develop self-confidence and the ability to be creative collaboratively! This class covers basic acting principles including action, objective, obstacles, conflict, beats, and being in the moment while incorporating fundamentals of movement, voice, and improvisation essential to the art of acting. Students will examine scripts, perform character analysis, learn about actors’ journals, and perform a final presentation for families.

n Acting 2 Ages 10-16 | Saturday | 11 a.m.–12 p.m. Instructor: Dan Coyle | Fee: $140 (14 classes) Building upon the skills students already have, this class will concentrate on voice, body, and imagination. They will work to develop self-confidence through theater games and group work. Students will learn to analyze characters for their qualities, characteristics, and motivations. A final presentation for families will take place at the end of the semester.

Comedic Improvisation, like “Whose Line is it Anyway?,” is not scripted but requires building blocks to create successful scenes. Students will develop the confidence to take control of the stage, develop cool characters and funny situations, and support fellow performers. Using shows such as “Saturday Night Live,” “Monty Python,” and “Second City TV” as inspiration, we will work on the skills necessary to create great comedy sketches. This class will be a blast, so come with your improv and writing shoes on. A performance will take place for families at the end of the semester. Stage Combat Ages 12+ | Wednesdays | 6-7 p.m. Instructor: Shane Kegler | Fee: $170 (17 classes) Students will learn the basics of stage combat, as well as techniques used by film and stage actors, to portray combat safely. We will learn hand-to-hand techniques and work using stage-safe swords. We will also learn the basics of creating a whole fight scene. No previous experience is necessary. Solidtoed shoes are strongly recommended for each class. This class requires movement; please dress appropriately. n

N EW

n Shakespeare Ages 12+ | Wednesdays | 7–8 p.m. Instructor: Shane Kegler | Fee: $170 (17 classes) Shakespeare is a great tool for every actor to help work on dialogue, characters and emotions. Through monologues and scene work, students will develop a working knowledge of how to understand and accurately portray Shakespeare. Students will explore important tools for speaking the text including scansion, First Folio work, and studying the Bard’s words to understand their true meaning.

N EW

n Script Analysis Ages 12+ | Saturday | 12–1 p.m. Instructor: Dan Coyle | Fee: $140 (14 classes) The answers to how an actor or director should approach the text of a script are in the text. In this class learn techniques to help you act within the truth of the moment and have fun! Analyzing the script creates a blueprint of clear choices that activates the actor to play truthfully and impulsively under the given circumstances. This class will teach you how to break down scenes simply and specifically. Script analysis is an organizational skill and a collaborative tool that helps you make clear and confident choices in your preparation, so in performance you can feel free to work viscerally, boldly, and bravely.

n

*About Combined Classes Students benefit both by being challenged and by leading, so as they progress through the levels, we like to see students contrast a “challenge” level class against a class at their “mastery” level. For the more advanced, the “mastery” class is an opportunity to build confidence and leadership skills by modeling clean technique in more familiar steps for their less advanced peers. For those less advanced, it’s an opportunity to be exposed to new challenges while mixing in with more advanced peers.

860-465-5636

Pointe 1 By permission of the instructor; requires enrollment in the preceding Ballet 4 technique class. Thursdays | 7:30–8 p.m. Instructor: Amy Chibeau | Fee: $85 (17 classes) In this introduction to pointe work class, students learn to put on pointe shoes properly and how to break them in. Class exercises work to improve ankle alignment, flexibility and strength, and to perfect the center of balance necessary for pointe. Most class work takes place at the barre. One required class for Pointe 1 is Ballet 4 along with one other Ballet class.
